It rained this morning, which felt really good. Humid as all heck still, but oh that rain! Combined with an impressive light show to the north as an electrical storm made its way by, this morning's run was pretty cool!
And now it's almost time for bed...I have the alarm set for 1am for tomorrow's long run. Methinks work is going to be sleepy fun by the afternoon.

Added extra rest days and/or moved runs because frankly everything hurts. Left Hip/lower back is the worst of it right now and it seems like yesterday's easy run made it worse. So frustrating because the run felt fine

Rest day today before a 7 mile run tomorrow morning.
I just wanted to throw out a couple questions to everyone....how long have you all been running on a consistent basis, and how long had you been running before you noticed a significant difference in your pace/consistency? (by that, I mean - you don't feel like every mile is a bear to run - not necessarily speed)

Running newbie over here! Found this group a little late into the month but that's okay. I'm going to aim for 3 to 4 miles. That seems low but I think it's a good place to start. I've gone off the deep end and registered myself for the 2018 hot chocolate 15k in November.13

ETA: I started running about 6 years ago. Been running consistently the whole time, barring a month off each year due to some sort of lower leg injury. I think I started feeling a significant difference in the effort level required after about 3-4 months. But I am the type to always try and push too hard with every run, so I always felt I needed to improve pace every time. Learned (still learning) that you need to have mostly slow runs for training, and occasional speed work for your body to adapt.4 -

I started running last summer, mostly took the winter off, and have run 3-4 times a week since the end of April this year. I’d say I was feeling that mile-by-mile struggle on and off until about a month ago when I stopped trying to run ten-minute miles and dropped back to 11-12 mpm. Other than the occasional tempo or fartlek run I’ve just focused on distance and have been a lot happier and more comfortable. My pace is slowly increasing but I’m still slower on average than I was running in June, and that is okay with me!2 -
I’d planned on a 20 minute easy run before lifting this AM, but instead woke up with a hangover and a weird desire to run around the lake again. So I did. I didn’t fully repeat yesterday, though - I did take a nap when I got home, but was up before noon and have been grading for an hour already.
A couple of fun moments on my run this morning: thinking one of the songs on my playlist was making fun of me (“Greased Lighting”), and literally forgetting for a moment why I thought going for a run would be a good idea. But I made it!
If I stick to the plan and run 7.5 miles tomorrow evening I’ll beat last week’s mileage PR by about three miles and be up 20% this week rather than the 10% I’ve been aiming for, but I’m feeling pretty good so I’m thinking I should be okay, especially if I resist the urge to adjust the rest of the month accordingly. I guess I’ll see how I feel tomorrow after lifting tonight - SO took the afternoon off and we’re going to catch a matinee in an hour.
ETA: Oof, just checked the weather and it’s gonna be HOT the next two days. Looks like a slightly shorter run around sunrise tomorrow is going to be my best bet. That’ll put me back on plan and I’ll still get a new lake in, wee! Gonna have to hit the sidewalk a fair bit, though. Fingers crossed I don’t faceplant!

Running since April 2016 - never ran before that. From my data, looks like April 22, 2016
June 25, 2016 - I entered my first race: 11th Annual Wilma Rudolph 10 K Road Race.

Note: I do not work on speed, I just want to run distance/endurance. Never thought any of the miles were unbearable.6 -

Thank you! I'm not sure where to begin, if I can finish this 15k at all I will be pleased. I feel I should focus on endurance rather than speed right now. When the registration was happening it asked for pace and I picked the slowest possible which was I think 4.

I've either been running consistently or injured since August, 2011. After I became able to run for 30 minutes continually, the first mile was never a bear . . . until after I was able to run a marathon. Now, sometimes I just have to gut through that first mile till things feel right. This can be mitigated by extensive walking before I start running, but I don't always have the time for that.
Later miles were sometimes notably bearish until I learned to run easy in early 2014. I struggled with running slow enough to keep it easy for some time, didn't truly master that art until some time in 2015.
And even now, on the very humid days, every mile after the first hour can be a bear. This partly depends on how fast I run early. If my discipline for running easy is good, I can last longer than if I let myself run marathon pace early.
So, the generic advice to all new runners: If running every mile is a bear, you're probably running too fast. Slow down a little, maybe only 15 seconds a mile. It will make a big difference on your longer runs.
Controlling pace is a whole other topic; I didn't start to get good at that until 2015, and it's still a work in progress.4 -
Rest day today. Results are online for IEXC #2. It says I finished 9th of 32, official time 22:10 (compared to 22:11 on my Garmin). It also had me 3rd in my age group, behind two guys that I know are decades younger than me.
Dropped an email to the RD about the age group thing. He'd already seen that several runners were put into the wrong age group, and is working on getting that fixed for the series results. It's just one of the things that RDs have to wrestle with in low-budget races with low-cost timing services.6 -
@hayleymace90 I love Zombies Run! I found the main app after I could already run 5k, but I like the story and the characters so much that I still got their 5K trainer at some point just to listen to the little story bits
@LaDispute57 You already got a lot of good responses, but I'll add mine anyway:
If somebody told me to stop running, my first (internal) reaction would be "hell, no". I would try to find out why - is it because they are worried that I am not safe running alone at night? Then I might try to change to running in the mornings (even though I am defenitely not a morning person, but I'd understand the concern and be willing to address it). Is it because they think I am harming myself by too much running (because I'm stupidly not taking the time to let an injury heal)? Then I should probably consider if they are right, and switch to cycling and maybe swimming for a while. Is it because we don't spend enough time together? That one I could understand too - my last relationship sort of faded away (while still in the dating phase) because he was a workaholic and we never did anything together. If that is the issue, I would be willing to go from five running days per week to three (maybe with a double am/pm run on one of those days...). If they could not give me a convincing reason that my running is a serious issue for the relationship, then as everyone else said, there are obviously other issues. Either we figure them out or not, but I for sure won't stop running in that case! There are days were the saying "running is the best therapy" is definitely true for me. Pretty sure it would *not* be helpful for any relationship if I stopped running from one day to the next
@ereck44 You would have to eat A LOT to put one 5 pounds of fat in one meal in a restaurant. 1 pound of fat = 3500 calories - and I doubt you ate 17,500 kcal... It's of course easier to control calories if you are cooking yourself, but there are lots of websites with advice what to eat in restaurants without too many calories (e.g. something like this http://www.desizeme.com/Indian-Food-Calories.html )

@garygse August is now one third done, yay! Plus, July was already so hot, there can't be any heat and humidity left over for August, right?
@kcs76 I use a GPS watch that uploads my runs to strava, so I cannot really help with the tracking error. I used to use the Strava app directly for tracking bike rides before buying a "multisport" watch, and never had that issue. Maybe it's an energy saving option from your phone that kicks in after a certain time? You could test that at home and see if the app will still get the error after the time it usually takes you to run 1.1 miles, then you would at least know it's not distance-related.

@kgirlhart Some days I'm not sure if "warm humidity" or "dry heat" are worse... Great that you still enjoyed your run!
@CilantroT I'm glad the dog didn't hurt you worse, but still, that's scary! But I hope one dog will not keep you from running in the future, especially not when the month has been going so great for you until now!
@katharmonic It's awesome that you can spontaneously sign up for a half marathon (a hilly one at that) and successfully run it! No surprise that it wasn't a PR since you didn't taper for it at all.
@shanaber The ash and smoke in the air sounds horrible. Running outside in that air cannot be good for your health! Car shopping and weight training was probably a better alternative.
@eleanorhawkins That hill is probably really, really good training! Enjoy your flat run next week :-)
@polskagirl01 That sounds like a lot of swimming! I've just started (again...) trying to learn freestyle/crawl, and I haven't cracked the 1000m mark yet, even with short breaks after 50m or 100m. 2200 open water is seriously impressive!

Rest day for me today. Which is probably overdue. I woke up feeling not so great, the first thing I did when I got to work was walking carefully (feeling very dizzy) to the toilet to throw up, my second act was to write an "I'm sick, I'm going home" mail, then I drove home and crawled into bed for another two hours. When I woke up, I was feeling much better, but I've still spent the day alternating between sitting in front of the TV and my sewing machine. And I've finally caught up with this thread! I went outside for an hour, walking around, to get some fresh air, and was feeling pretty normal, so I don't know what was wrong with me this morning. Still, I'll go to bed early today and decide spontaneously tomorrow morning if running is a good idea or not.
41.1 running for August so far. Not really on track for my goal - I forgot whether I said 150km or 160km, I need to go looking for my ticker again, but in any case I'm behind.
At least I also did two bike rides of 20km/26km (both with decent elevation), went swimming twice (would have been 1 or 2 more times if the outdoor pool stayed open during thunderstorms ), four times strength training and twice indoor climbing/bouldering. So even if I 'm behind on my running goal, I haven't been completely lazy ^^8 -
Intended to run this morning - but my lower back is screaming at me. Not sure the cause - just hope it goes away!

I started running when I turned 50. I never ran - "hated" running - not even sure why I decided to begin. At the Y one day, a guy came up and said "I've been watching you - run fast - walk - run fast - walk. I'm going to give you some advice. Slow down and you'll be amazed how far you can go." I took his advice and he was right. The only trouble is, I do believe I've trained myself to run slow now. Also - I clearly remember the first time I ran one mile without having to stop - and it felt amazing! Very empowering. I also learned the first mile is the hardest - after that everything settled in and I could go 7 or 8 miles before needing a walk break. The trouble is, I started doing a regular run/walk pattern about two years ago and honestly it's made running harder. Yes, I can go long distances, but running a mile without having to stop almost never happens anymore.4 -

(Other driver just decide to pull into traffic despite the fact I was already there. Got the whole thing on my dash cam, not that it matters, its a no-fault state)15 -

Oh no! That's not good. Glad to hear you are OK. So frustrating. What does no fault state mean? Does it just mean your insurance pays your bill and sorts it out with theirs?0 -
Hey all. Another day on ice. I continue to get better, down to an annoying niggle now! But still annoying. I'm definitely on track to start back again Monday (Saturday today).
So in my research into the cause I found it's likely to have been overdoing it. Still a possibility its shoe related so in a couple of weeks when I'm in the city I'm going to get fitted properly. It could also be due to not warming up properly. I did several runs that week with just a short 5min walk to warm up. All my runs were over 5k. So got me thinking and looking at warmup options.
What do you guys do for a warm up and how much of a difference do you notice?3 -

Welcome! I've been running for about a year now and can definitely say firsthand that Run Slower is the best advice for improving and enjoying your running. A lot of people use couch to 5k programs with a lot of success - I looked at a couple but they all called for longer workouts than I was up for at that time, so I just ran until my legs hurt, walked until they stopped hurting, and kept that up until I wasn't walking much anymore. Twice since then I've had to dial back the speed and both times it made a huge difference in my endurance and enjoyment (time number two was about a month ago), so definitely don't worry about speed right now.4 -

Oh no! That's not good. Glad to hear you are OK. So frustrating. What does no fault state mean? Does it just mean your insurance pays your bill and sorts it out with theirs?

@RunnerGrl1982 I've been running consistently since July 2016, and initially things were hard until I read a piece of advice that simply said "Don't go for speed, simply aim for distance and the speed will occur naturally." After that, things were a lot easier and the speed has come to me. I still run slowly for most of my runs, and then am constantly amazed at what I can actually do come race day.

@Scott6255 Yep, it was pretty humid this morning...I thought the storm that blew through would have made things better, but if anything it seemed even worse.
@zdyb23456 1am is only 1½ hours earlier than normal, so it's not that bad. I did warn my boss that Friday afternoons were probably going to be a struggle for me from now on until my race in February, and he was both cool with it and excited for me at the same time!

We'd had a storm the night before, which usually clears the air some, but it felt even worse than normal. I didn't realize just how much I was sweating until I could hear my feet squelching. Still, managed to get a full marathon distance in in a decent time, and be back at my desk showered and ready for work by 6:30am.
