I ran the 35 km Bloody Long Walk!
(22miles)
3:59:40
Originally planned to walk it with 2 people but they sadly had emergencies.
So since I'm always complaining there are never any 30 km events I decided here was my chance!
I was quite nervous since I just ran 30 km last Friday, but I was really happy with how my body performed and that I seem to have fuelling going well. It was awesome passing 1-2,000 walkers, but I felt a bit cheeky running a walk, though it was allowed, and I met a few of us runners.
Something I read on Friday was helpful during some parts:
Runner’s World April 2018, The Transformer, by Christopher Ross
Re Sam Anderson, NY bartender, who quoted
Rainer Maria Rilke The Limits of Our Longing,
“Let everything happen to you: beauty and terror. Just keep going. No feeling is final.”

I seem to have developed a penchant for spontaneously trying to run up hills I don't need to when I see roads or tracks that head uphill from my usual routes. Very strange!

I was a little disappointed not to break 30 minutes, but running three sub-ten miles was a good consolation prize - I'd have to check but I think my past record is two, or maybe even just one. AND I got top ten in my category, which is a little silly when we’re talking 9th out of 39, but dang it, it counts and I’m keeping it! I’ve got a pretty good shot at beating that at the 10k in Kansas since last year there were only four women in my division and 50-ish people overall. 5th out of 5 is still top 5 and you won't convince me otherwise!
Top 10 in your category is not silly, its great! Well done!

I'm glad I ditched the rainy morning yesterday in favour of today. It was sunny and having only ~11°C was just perfect.

@MegaMooseEsq thanks for sharing. Congrats on your placement !
trying and finishing something different.
I’ve heard of them but always wondered. I thought would be nice to try a mud run as well. I think it would be great to at least try once. It sounds like a lot of fun. What city was this in?
Plus Cool hardware!

@Orphia what a beautiful place to run!
I met a very considerate man on my run yesterday. He's often out at the same time we run, walking a beautiful and well behaved German shepherd. Yesterday he also had an elderly, gray-muzzled chocolate lab, and my husband said, "Don't you usually have just the one dog?" It turned out his neighbor had passed away, so he took in the neighbor's dog. It was very sweet watching his high-energy youthful dog play gently with the older dog. And nice to witness an act of kindness.18 -

This was just outside of Minneapolis, but these kind of night runs happen all over the place. As a post-script, I couldn't get to sleep until well past 1AM, so I think evening racing will be avoided in the future when possible. I've done long runs in the evening before but I guess that isn't quite the same.5 -
End of month question? (Dont worry @MobyCarp , we'll throw out a first of month question in a week. Had a dream about you last night. Do not remember what it was. Just remember saying your name. Maybe I was talking in my sleep. Probably runner's envy...which leads me to the question....).
What do you do when you hit that funk?
I am over the heat, over the struggle, over feeling like I've mismanaged this heat building opportunity. And over these hard won miles.
Suggestions to cope with the running funk? Haha, oh thats easy. Go run.
Whats your funk? How do you get out of your head?

@Elise4270 I'm slower than I was last year and the smoke this summer has been making it really easy to not go out and run. Even my plan of having scheduled races hasn't helped that much.
So what to do?
Well, running my half marathon even though I felt undertrained - and finishing! - seems to have reset something in my mind. Like I know I can do better so I want to do what I can to do better. So now I've got a coach and we are targeting my first training cycle starting Sept 1. I'm also trying to engage more with people who run, because I find surrounding myself with people who also like what I like helps remind me about what I like about this crazy sport.
I feel energized about running and about planning for next year for the first time in aaaages. It's so awesome to have that feeling back.8 -
@MegaMooseEsq - Congratulations on your race! Great race report too! Placing in the top ten IS a big deal and you should be very proud of it!
@Orphia - What a lovely place to walk/run/race! I can't imagine anyone having a problem with someone running part or all of a walk - you are there getting it done either way!eleanorhawkins wrote: »I seem to have developed a penchant for spontaneously trying to run up hills I don't need to when I see roads or tracks that head uphill from my usual routes. @rheddmobile - That is so sweet that he took in his neighbor's (friend's) dog. So often they just end up at the animal shelter and if they are old no one wants them. We do have some rescue organizations that try to help too.
@Elise4270 - when I got into the funk it was before I retired and I think partly because work was being so terrible, which meant I really needed to run more... but I was just tired of trying to fit it all in. I was getting slower and slower, the new eating plan seemingly wasn't helping, and my weight was going up. I cut way back though on how often and how far I was running for maybe a week or two. My husband, my daughter and especially the dog were all telling me to go run Mostly though following what everyone was doing here is what really got me back out there. I ran with no plan, no set distance or time goal - just run and enjoy being outside.6 -

@Elise4270
Received this below partial email from Jeff Gaudette @Runnersconnect and thought his words would be better than mine so a portion of his email below that I think answers your question - plus I thought you nailed it yesterday with your Strava titled run saying you basically never fail if you try.
“To avoid the trap of being solely focused on outcome, take the time in your training cycle to really focus on the process of becoming a better runner. Recognize and be proud of yourself for getting in runs when in would be easy to sleep in.
Take pride in the day you took the time to fit in all the "little things" that keep you healthy.
Relish in the mental breakthrough that comes after you realized you survived a difficult run
Reward yourself for making good choices in your nutrition that benefit your running.
The training and fitness will come. The best piece of advice I ever received was this: "A workout is designed to help make you fitter for race day, not to prove how fit you are".
So, stop agonizing over ever split. Focus on the joy in each step forward that you make towards your goal. Be happy with where you are on the way to where you want to be.
Run Smart, Run Awesome,”12 -
@MegaMooseEsq great race! Congrats on yhe top 10!
@Elise4270 I am probably opposite of everyone else, but I find taking a break from running (1-2 weeks) will get me back in the right frame of mind. I think it is true that absence makes the heart grow fonder3 -
The rest day turned into two days as we decided to get out and about yesterday. We got a lot of walking in and had a nice family day. Today I tried a new route and ran in towards town. It’s a very small town that is on the edge of a very nice lake. The town does a really nice job of keeping the beauty. The way there felt good and thought about taking an extra turn or two, but after some hills and a slowl climb on the way back I was done. We go home later today, but will be back on Friday after work.

Missed too many posts being away yesterday for travel to TN. Great race reports all. @skippygirlsmom ouchie.
@sarahthes glad you had a soft landing.
@RunsOnEspresso hope the sleep study yields some answers for you.
@PastorVincent i hope you're feeling better.
This morning's run with @Teresa502 , aka Wonder Woman, was great. I was especially impressed that she had done 11 miles yesterday and still came out this morning. Cloud cover was great, humidity relatively low, and the trail was long. The first 4 miles were a bit faster than we planned, about 11:40 or so, because ot was mostly a gentle downhill. Overall pace for the 10 miles was just under 12 minute/mile. I must confess that I am not used to running with anyone and really appreciated being able to chat and run. We took a few small walk breaks, but maintained a fairly steady pace overall. This is my longest distance run to date since I started back, endomondo said 10.1 for a total of 65.57/55 for the month.
@Elise4270 I once heard a priest ask a bishop this same question regarding how he felt sometimes when performing his duties, that he had lost a little faith from time to time. The bishop's answer, basically fake it til you make it. We all have doubts and occasionally fall into the mindset of why the *kitten* do I do this to myself , but the very act of running does as much or more to pull us back from that place than almost any other activity we can imagine. Running for the sheer joy of being able to run, or because we know someone who would love to be able to get out there like we do, but for some disability can not, is what always helps remind me that I am blessed to do this crazy activity.
For all of us:Keep Calm and Run On.🏃♂️🏃♀️♥️7 -

Woah woah woah! I am officially registered for my first 10K and my first half marathon! I was feeling nervous about pulling the trigger on the latter, especially since deciding on the Mankato race that is just close enough to conceivably drive there day-of (if we get up at 4AM), but far enough and mid-October enough that a decent number of things could go wrong. Thankfully, the website helpfully offered $5 race insurance, which seems more than worth it for an $80 entry fee. Check and check!
Moving from the 5k to the 10k I’m wondering what my mindset should be. I’ve run six miles or further five times now and have an 8.6 and 5.9 scheduled before the race in two weeks. My thought is that I should try and treat it like a normal easy or maybe tempo run, depending on how I’m feeling, and not worry about strategy past that. I want to finish and it would be nice to do it without walking.
If I keep walking to a minimum I should be able to manage at about an 11 minute pace, which gives me a finish time of 1:09:xx, toward the back of the pack but not last based on last year’s results. I can be a competitive *kitten*, but that makes going in with reasonable expectations even more important. And my time would still have netted me top five in my division last year (out of five!) and that totally counts for me.
@travelling_lots: That’s too bad about the groups in your area. I can’t imagine that there are a huge number of people wanting to run in the winter, but hopefully they’ll be bonkers enough to be dedicated!
@RunnerGrl1982: I love running by myself, but I’ve also enjoyed getting to know other runners here, and I think winter will be a good time to reach out. I’m working from home full time now and even this introvert needs some people time. If it doesn't work out, it doesn't work out. Hopefully I'll get some survival tips at least.
@PastorVincent: Your stories made buying a house sound so appealing that I guess we’re dipping our toes in as well. Because why bother setting one big goal for the year when you can set three! Any tips?
High fives to everyone who raced this weekend!

@Elise4270 This heat is beating everyone down this summer. My running group has dwindled because of the sucktastic heat. This is the only thing keeping me going right now...

@Elise4270 I'm with @Scott6255 on getting out of a funk. After my marathon at the end of June, I just couldn't get into the whole running thing. I just wanted to drink all the booze and eat all the food without thinking about the consequences. I tred running, but mostly just felt guilty about NOT running. After the marathon I'd had these great ideas about doing everything else I'd stopped ding, like dancing, cycling, swimming etc., but actually it just didn't happen.
So when my clothes started getting tight I knew I had to do something, and gave myself a self-imposed running ban. No feeling guilty because I rolled over in bed at an early alarm rather than get up. I set my alarm for later and slept.
And now, before the month is even up, I find myself interested in running again. I've gone back to doing Crossfit once or twice a week, have been doing regular yoga classes, and am now about to embark on a 5k training plan to try and get some speed. With a little bit of help from some childlike running down a mountain I seem to have refound my mojo. Above all, I am going to BE KIND to myself - not berating myself for taking time for myself.7 -
So many great replys. Thanks to each one of you that have or will have answered it.
I'm going to sit and write them all in my training journal. From pen to brain to heart.
DH an i decided to scrap the after church heat run and wait until the sun goes down a bit this evening..
@RunsOnEspresso "sucktastic" on point.2 -

The biggest thing is research and hire your own building inspector. Even if the seller tries to offer you one, or reports or something for free. Get your own, from someone that is beholden to you. Then take that report to someone you know that can help you understand it. We were saved twice by this alone.
Also, when you go look at a hose check a few things:
https://www.realtor.com has crime maps. Use them. In USA, agents are not allowed to steer you to good neighborhoods. So do the crime research yourself. Also look at how long a house has been on the market, AND any other house nearby. If they are on the market much longer than normal - question why. That is a big red flag. Look at the past sales, has the house changed hands often? That is another red flag.
Ask LOTS of questions. Get copies of utility bills - that will help you know how good the insulation in the house is and what you can expect. Vist the house MORE than once, and do it at different times of day. What is the place like at 8pm? 1pm? and so on. If a major rain happens, try to get in the house ASAP after it (during would be best) to see if there is any new water in places you would not like.
Drive around the neighborhood where you are looking at the house. Are the other lawns decent? do the other places look well kept up? Expensive cars or cheap trash? In general, the better a place looks, the better the quality of living there will be. Obviously, there are no guarantees, but it is a good bellwether.
Do not rush an offer in, instead sleep on it. If you get a counter offer, sleep on that too. Slow and steady!
A good realtor is a must, but legally they are limited in what they are allowed to say and do, so do as much of your own research as you can. Unsure about the HVAC, call around and get an HVAC guy you trust to look at it. Even if you have to spend a little to have it done. Same with roof an foundation and other big things.
That is what I came up within a couple mins off the top of my head. PM me any questions and I will try to answer.

One house hunting tip I wish I had known - if there are new fixtures or wallpaper or repairs, find out why. We were told "Hey, this is great, all new floors in the bathroom! And also new pipes upstairs!" Yeah because the pipes in this house are terrible. Everyone in the neighborhood (several cosmetically different houses with basically the same floor plan) has the same exact leak above the dining room table.2

@Elise4270 I haven't been running all that long - in fact I just got a message from mapmyrun on my "runniversary" earlier this week. So not too much time to get into a funk yet. But what keeps me going when it's truly awful out there is knowing that it could all be taken away from me and I would miss it so much. Being sidelined by my knee for two months, I thought I was going to lose my mind. Daily hard cardio is essential for my blood sugar control, and finding something to do every single day without including running is pretty grim. Even the worst run is better than the best session on a stationary bike or rowing machine. If I had access to a private pool every day, I could survive without running, but even then I would miss the adventure of seeing all the things around me. My most recent run was pretty mediocre, as runs go. It was hot! My husband almost stepped on a skink! A deer ran right under us! We saw a weird dead bug! We met a nice guy with two nice dogs! My arm had visible salt crystals dried on it! My feet love my new shoes but my butt hurts! My husband hates purple nuun! For someone like me who lives a vivid internal life it's good to be forced into a vivid external life regularly. Running won't ever let you forget that place where your spirit interfaces with the rest of the world.7

Today's race: 18.12 Challenge race today in Sacket's Harbor, NY (on Lake Ontario, site of the first battle of the war of 1812 between US and the British Empire, and major shipbuilding yard for that war).
Holy crap, you guys, I ran 18 miles today! I felt so nervous about it, as my longest run to date was 15 miles and it wasn't very pretty. The day started with a 4 am wake-up as we had a little over an hour drive to get there. I think I was too tired to get properly nervous so I didn't feel too bad at the start. Just a long run with bling. The weather started out about 69 degrees, but started raining as we waited for the start. It mostly stopped as we actually got out there but there were a few bursts of rain along the way. Generally there was a decent breeze from the lake to combat the humidity a bit.
I felt ok for the first few miles, but was having a mental struggle with how much was left. I had some people to chat with, which helped. A friend's husband had come along to help us along the course and seeing him at several points really helped - I didn't need any of the extra snacks and drinks he was ready to hand off, but liked that he was there if I needed it. When I got to 10 miles I started to believe I could finish okay. I made a quick pit stop at around mile 12, which is the first time I've done that in a race - I probably could have made it fine but there was no line and I wasn't trying to beat a certain time. When I made it to mile 13, I put my headphones in and used music to help me through the rest. At mile 15 I took a quick pic and said to myself "this is farther than I've ever run before" again and again - every step a new distance PR! That amused me for a bit. I actually sped up and the last 3 miles were my fastest of the race, each one gaining a bit. I was so happy to see the lake again as we finished on the shore. I crossed the finish at 3:23 and was so freaking happy. I got a quick roll out of my calves in the massage tent, ate pizza, had a beer, and waited for my friends to finish.
I am so tired but feeling just thrilled - longest run, highest mileage week yet, most steps in a day all done today! I feel like this was a great confidence builder for the rest of my training leading up to the Marine Corps Marathon. 9 weeks from today!

@Elise4270 well, I've been in that funk mode you call it these past days.
I think @MegaMooseEsq explained the negative factor enabled/disabled in the diary settings about the step count. I wanted to find that post to say thanks for the explanation.
I disabled it. I found it demoralizing. I prefer to use the garmin only to count the distance and calories burned that day. No longer counting steps. In my head felt I was going no where. It was eating at me.
So, for me to get out of that mode I keep at it don't stop but I have to find a logical way out to solve it in my head and move forward in a more positive manner. But till then I'm fighting with myself. Sometimes being stubborn pays off it doesn't let me quit.2 -
@PastorVincent excellent tips for house hunting. That's how I used to look at the areas ahead of time for when I used to run or now to walk in the evenings or early morning to be safe.2

Not exactly sure how that is going to work now.
I've been thinking maybe I should upgrade the data on my phone to keep for updated with you guys. This forum moves extremely quickly.
I think you guys will make me meet my goals vs joining a running room or club here.3
