@Elise4270 "Thought one. Are we overlooking the importance of cut back weeks?" Most probably! I used to try and fit one in every fourth week or so, but since I'm on a shorter on-call rotation nowadays, I tend to leave my down week until then, which means every eight weeks or so. I have to say, I can certainly tell the difference...after about six weeks, I quickly start to feel tired vs when I've just finished a cutback week. It could also be the heat though (or a mix of both).No one cares about your arm pit fat, your missing teeth, that your ugly, or dumb, or gimpy, or misunderstood...
Normally Mondays see me running 15 miles, so with a 20% reduction or so for the cutback week, that leaves about 12 miles for today. In other news, August seems to have realized that it's been slacking off lately, and has returned with a vengeance. Thankfully, September is just around the corner...not that that's going to change anything temp-wise any time soon, but at least psychologically it'll make a difference.

Rest day today. Ridiculous humidity, weather app says dew point 74º F right now, temp 86º F. It was okay out walking, but not one of those just enjoy the day walks.
Running funk: I'm not sure I understand "funk" the same way everyone else does. I get in a real downer of a funk when I'm too injured to run, and force myself to concentrate on rehab and actually getting in the exercises that will help me get better.
When I'm healthy enough to run, the feelings probably aren't strong enough to be called "funk". Maybe, "lack of motivation." When I have an unexplained lack of motivation, that can be an indication that I'm overtraining and need to back off a bit. Sound familiar?
Maybe it gets strong enough to be called funk when we have weeks and weeks of oppressive humidity; but if I get out there and run, eventually I acclimate to it and it's just running. Then when the humidity comes back down, it's heavenly running.
I frequently experience that lack of motivation for doing my morning supporting (cross training?) exercises. Sometimes I give in and skip some of them for a day. Most of the time, I tell myself, 3 sets of pull ups before the banana. Work in 3 sets of push ups. Okay, do that second set of pushups and the balance exercises after I eat the eggs. Take a break, danger point to miss the rest. Start the steel cut oats in the microwave, and force myself to do the monster walk up and down the hallway with the resistance band. And from that point, even when I'm telling myself I'm just doing this one more thing, habit usually carries me through the swiss ball bridges, the one-leg weighted calf raises, the cone touches, the walking lunges, and that 3rd set of push ups.
I've let injury/lack of motivation/lack of comfortable time in the morning routine squeeze out all the kettlebell work for quite a while. That showed up as a lower back ache after long runs recently. Yep, need to add back those kettlebell swings and snatches to work the erector spinae. Wouldn't hurt to add back the Turkish get ups, too. Probably don't need to add back the squats; I'm likely getting enough quad work from the walking lunges and the cone touches.
So one day last week I did the kettlebell swings. Today I did the kettlebell swings and one set of snatches. Baby steps. Still need to find a time slot that makes this stuff routine. I know from experience that if I load too much of it into my morning/breakfast routine I'll crash and burn. But there's no longer any *physical* reason to avoid the kettlebell work; it's just that I've filled the time with other stuff. The cone touches are important, and I'm doing more walking lunges than I did the last time I was consistently doing kettlebell work.
And I struggle to overcome the funk/lack of motivation on all this non-running stuff, because doing it consistently helps me stay uninjured and keep running consistently. If it weren't for the fact that it helps me stay uninjured while running, I doubt I'd give a flying f*** in a rolling donut about walking lunges or calf raises.
I have been more consistent since I started giving myself a planned break on weekends. Saturdays and Sundays I'm up early, have a compressed time frame, and eat oatmeal instead of steel cut oats to save time. I let myself get by with just the pull ups and push ups those two days, and it helps with the motivation during the week. Possibly the two days off helps physically as well, but it really helps mentally.
I don't talk about the supporting stuff much, because it isn't as fun as talking about running. But it's important to be consistent with the supporting stuff, and that's where I struggle with motivation most often.7 -

So so so true! I've been thinking about this. I run the same darn route every time. If I "need" to do more than 4 miles, I start looping around and around. I live in the country for crying out loud - there are so many pretty routes possible - but I was stalked by a guy a couple years ago and now am skittish about heading out anyplace the homes are more than 1/2 mile apart. It's time to start exploring again. There is a wonderful nature preserve about 2 miles down the road full of trails. This Saturday - I'm driving over there - and going to just enjoy running for awhile. I feel better just thinking about it!
Take some pepper spray. Or something. Id feel really bad if i encouraged you to something.... Ugly.
When you see an unfamiliar guy running, and he crosses the street to give you a wide berth, you know he's heard stories about stalkers and pepper spray. I may or may not have done this on occasion.3 -

I do this, but not out of fear for pepper spray, more for fear the other person might want to TALK or say HI or something equally crazy...7 -
@MobyCarp - I hear you. I have started and fizzled out some many times on that stuff. I am currently in a fizzle out actually, in part cause with the job change I have no access to weights, pull bar, or etc anymore.0

@MobyCarp i have a long list of similar pt exercises. I'm not as good about doing them once i had to go back to work. Think, honestly i havent done any of them in months. No time* and i still have nerves that get mad. But i should be doing them until the nerves get mad.
Just shows me that, if im not gonna put in the work, i won't see the pay off. Or catch that f** filled rolling donut if i wanted too 😁
*Lazy couch time, or time i wont get out of bed early enough to manage my life, yet continue to complain about the lack of opportunity to properly train, rehab or motivate myself. All on me.2 -

I've had a week of forced rest and reflection. Not being able to race on Saturday was devastating (I cried) but after those few tears I've been trying to focus on the positives of this unplanned hiatus.
1. I am addressing those always tight muscles (I'm looking at you hips and calves). I've just had my third massage, and, importantly, there's been no running to retighten those freshly loosened muscles. My flexibility in my hips and hamstrings is through the roof this week (good time to see if I can still do the splits!)
2. All the chat around here about the privilege of being able to run and run funks, I am truly appreciating how healthy I usually am and how much I love to run. Consequently, I am taking the best care of myself and ensuring I recover properly before heading back out.
3. Races come, races go. Sometimes you do well, sometimes just so-so, sometimes you're a DNS. But there's always another day, another goal, and another PB to shoot for.

Got my September training plan from my coach tonight and I'm super pumped. Today is rest day again (though I will walk after the kids are in bed).3

Today was a rest day after the 20 miles yesterday. I did take my dogs for a walk. My shin is feeling significantly better today, so it seems it was just overworked yesterday.
I signed up for our local 10K Labor Day race. I have run it twice before. It goes through through downtown and ends at the same park I ran through for my 5K this past Saturday. It is mostly flat with just a couple of hills, and honestly, it is one of my favorite races ever.8 -

I took an easy run on the treadmill before my strength training session today. I kept the speed down so I wouldn't push too hard and just tried to stretch my legs. My trainer had come up with a good post-race session that involved some stretching, and mostly arms and core work. Nothing too crazy. My hips were/are super tight so the stretching was good.

I'm also interested in the discussion about running funk and motivation. When I get into a funk, it's the thought of running almost every single day that is getting me down. I start thinking I JUST RAN! How could I need to run again already. And I get so freaking tired of the same running routes. As evidenced by the meme I posted this morning, right now I'm struggling with the idea that I need to run 18-20 (22? 23?) some miles for my long run for 6 more weeks. How is that supposed to happen? I just exhausted myself doing doing 18 one time. It's a bit depressing and scary.
Good thoughts @Elise4270. I've been thinking a lot about the cutback week concept. My coach doesn't seem to be big on incorporating them into the plan until you get up to the highest mileage, and then he has us back down for a week by only a couple of miles. It doesn't seem like much. I'm going to email him or talk to him in person this week about whether it's smart for me personally, given my goals to incorporate a bit of a cut back especially given the two races I've had the last two weekends.
On the good side though, I did really find having these races to be really motivating and helped break up the drudgery of long runs. A new place to run, lots of people, and the excitement of the race atmosphere all kind of charged me up. Normal long run days on those same roads and trails each week, I rely heavily on the group of people meeting up to keep me from giving up in the heat and humidity especially. I am not signed up for any more races until my marathon Oct 28 but I'm thinking now I'll need to pick some up just to keep it interesting. I'm also going to suggest a running road trip to some friends and see if we can make a day of running and lunch within an hour drive or so to see some new views at least.

@LaDispute57 - Thanks for the tip on the Shoe Goo. I got some and was able to fix the tear in the upper of my favorite Skoras as well as a couple areas where the tread was coming loose. Hopefully they can last now for a few hundred more miles!
@RunsOnEspresso - when is your marathon? Maybe just taking a short break from training and then getting back out running longer when it is (hopefully) cooler? I am so sorry you are struggling right now!

@biketheworld - like you I was always training, training, training for the next big race. So after my last one in July I decided not to sign up for any more this year. Well not anymore HMs that is. I have signed up for a 10k (along the beach where one of my His runs) and plan to run a fun 3 race series (5 and 10ks only) between now and the end of the year. I did hesitate and thought about one that is offering a 10 mile and a HM and talked myself out of them. I am enjoying, mostly, just running now when (unlike today) my body is willing to participate. Summers in So California are not pretty and everything is dry and pretty brown but I have been trying to look for one thing on each run that makes me glad I am outside and on my trail. I hate to have to drive to run but I am thinking maybe a drive to run along the beach once a week might be refreshing.
@Elise4270 - sometimes you are just too dang wise! I love your 'Thoughts' and will be putting them in my journal! Also we have the same taste in bananas! Have to be green! Makes it hard to buy too many of them because I can't eat them before they get too ripe (DH doesn't eat bananas)

Like @MobyCarp I rarely talk about my pre or post run routines. If I do my post run routine regularly I find it really helps with my tight hips and hamstrings. I also do the stretches my sports doc recommended for my hips before I run and they help too. I did all my after run workout yesterday including, planks (regular, single leg, side and side single leg), donkey kicks, fire hydrants and glute bridges. Then followed up with a mini workout with the 20lb kettlebell 3 sets of 15 each (side crunch, sumo goblet squat, two-hand swing).
Got up to run this morning and had some things to finish up around the house. Took Hobbes and started off but realized about .5 mile out that I had on the wrong shoes because my knees, ankle and hip were hurting. I wanted to love these shoes (Saucony Kinvara) but suspected they might have been causing a problem when I ran in them more regularly but this little outing confirmed it. The good news is I got them from REI and I can still return them! I went home and changed shoes, left Hobbes behind and got my full run in but for an easy run it was really hard. I even stopped to stretch my hips again and fix my shoe and fix my headphones when the clip broke
Tomorrow is Tempo Tuesday so hopefully I will have it in me to get a good tempo run in.

Had a fun weekend - after running 12 miles Saturday morning I took the kids to the local water park. We spent 5.5 hours going down water slides! They wanted to keep going, but I was exhausted - lol. Those stairs climbing to the top was killing me!
This morning I dropped them off for their first day of school! Fun times 🙂
I didn’t get back until 8, so it was a hot run! I set out and realized I forgot my water bottle - I had to run back home because I knew I would need it. I ran to the track and did my intervals. Felt pretty good- thank goodness there was a breeze in one direction because it was HOT.
I kept drinking water but ended up with a terrible headache. That hasn’t happened in awhile. I finally caved and took some Tylenol after dinner.

Walked the block, put my water bottle back and started to run again. I got about .25 in and I couldn't go any further. I think this might be the end of my marathon training. 3 attempts and no starts means it's not destined to be. I will probably drop down to the half.

Looks like you were trying to go from a longest run of 8 up to 14. Tough ask.
I don't believe in destiny.
There are other marathons, or just run the distance when you've done the training.
I wouldn't let the date of one specific event stop me from achieving a distance goal.

8 was my cut back week. I missed 12 due to my dog dying and my goal was to get 12 or 14 (I've beendoing up to 12 this summer). This is my 3rd attempt at a marathon and something keeps coming up. First I undertrained, second I got a bad sinus infection two weeks before and got dizzy when I tried to run so had to drop out and now that I've got the dizzy worked out I have fatigue. It just feels like its not meant to be.7 -

@katharmonic @shanaber I'm glad i can share a few helpful thoughts. I understand my own short comings, just lack the will to help myself. Although, i feel like September will be an ideal month to start training properly.
"Do Better" should apply to my training. Not just my diet.
@sarahthes How about a half ripe banana? They bother your stomach? I've tried hiding the riper ones in yogurt and almond butter, but it's no good. They're only good for banana nut like pancakes, or banana bread.0 -
I've been so tired from work that I don't think I've run since....sometime last week. Between 13 hr days and disgusting heat plus homework, it's not looking good for this week either
I have a question about something that happened tonight. I was driving home, well past dark and as I was about to make my turn, was shocked to see a runner like...right there about to run into my car. I almost hit her. Now, as far as vehicular traffic, I had the right of way. The cross street (she was about to cross in front of me) has a stop sign. I know that cyclists are supposed to obey standard traffic laws, and I thought that applied to runners too? I know I do. Is that not a thing? The other thing is, it was WELL after dark. She didn't have a stitch of anything reflective on. Nothing. Now that I've calmed down, maybe she had set out earlier and didn't expect to still be running? The sun set a little after 8pm, and this happened about 9:45. I was shocked and twitchy, but honestly I was a little pissed too. I wanted to yell at her for being so foolish to run without wearing something reflective or carrying a flasher/light. I don't get how she thought she could be seen?
Am I in the wrong about runners following traffic rules when running in areas with steady to heavy traffic?3 -

There are other marathons, or just run the distance when you've done the training.
I wouldn't let the date of one specific event stop me from achieving a distance goal.

8 was my cut back week. I missed 12 due to my dog dying and my goal was to get 12 or 14 (I've beendoing up to 12 this summer). This is my 3rd attempt at a marathon and something keeps coming up. First I undertrained, second I got a bad sinus infection two weeks before and got dizzy when I tried to run so had to drop out and now that I've got the dizzy worked out I have fatigue. It just feels like its not meant to be.
Yet.
Just a course adjustment. Dont write it off, yet.

It's really interesting reading the responses to the "funk" question. I'm maybe too new to running to have hit a funk yet, or else it's those amazing brain juices, but I worry more about running too much than how to get myself out the door. I worry about getting hurt and not being able to do this anymore, or overtraining and having to cut back more than I'd want. I realize that not everyone gets the runner's high (it's real!) and I'm unbelievably fortunate to live within easy access of multiple beautiful and well maintained running paths. It occurred to me the other day that since I got my long run over 4 miles or so, I've never had to repeat the same exact path on a long run or run multiple loops of a particular route in order to get to the distance I want, which is pretty amazing. A part of me really wants to repeat some of these routes but I also love the fact that I'm exploring new parts of the city in a way I never thought I would. My next two long runs will go around two new lakes, and by October I'll be leaving the city entirely, which blows my mind. I think at that point I'll have run the entire Twin Cities marathon route, although not all at once of course. One day...6

I've been so tired from work that I don't think I've run since....sometime last week. Between 13 hr days and disgusting heat plus homework, it's not looking good for this week either
I have a question about something that happened tonight. I was driving home, well past dark and as I was about to make my turn, was shocked to see a runner like...right there about to run into my car. I almost hit her. Now, as far as vehicular traffic, I had the right of way. The cross street (she was about to cross in front of me) has a stop sign. I know that cyclists are supposed to obey standard traffic laws, and I thought that applied to runners too? I know I do. Is that not a thing? The other thing is, it was WELL after dark. She didn't have a stitch of anything reflective on. Nothing. Now that I've calmed down, maybe she had set out earlier and didn't expect to still be running? The sun set a little after 8pm, and this happened about 9:45. I was shocked and twitchy, but honestly I was a little pissed too. I wanted to yell at her for being so foolish to run without wearing something reflective or carrying a flasher/light. I don't get how she thought she could be seen?
Am I in the wrong about runners following traffic rules when running in areas with steady to heavy traffic?
I think you have every right to be pissed. Unless it was a crosswalk, she should be waiting on you to clear. That just seems obvious safety that a pedestrian understands the cars gonna win, right or wrong. In no world should a runner have entered the roadway at night without proper reflective gear, eye contact and have expected a vehicle to see them.

ETA i dont think a runner has any rights to the road. They can't approach a 4way stop and expect thier turn. They yield to traffic and cross with the protection of the light. No light. Use common sense. Communicate. Wait for the go ahead.3 -

Oh man, that sounds scary. It is very common for runners in my neighborhood not to even slow down at stop signs. That said, I also believe that pedestrians have the right away at any intersection unless there's a light, so if she had a stop sign and you didn't, she would still have the right away. This is going to be city specific, though, and of course plenty of drivers don't yield when they should, or see you, or whatever. I kind of get getting caught out late unprepared, but that's the time to be extra careful!
ETA: In my city pedestrians legally have the right-away even in intersections without crosswalks. Of course, this is rarely enforced, and is no reason to be stupid after dark. I cross an intersection like this at the beginning of many of my runs and I always stop first, make eye contact, and wear bright clothing. With all due respect, @Elise4270, I pay taxes the same as drivers and if I had to wait for someone to wave me across the street before crossing, I'd never get home!1 -
@MegaMooseEsq A runner does not have to stop and yield to road traffic where you are? I dont think that's a thing here. If a pedestrian enters a cross walk traffic must stop.... Maybe thats the same thing? Hmm.
@kcs76 might not listen to me here... Larger towns maybe. Come to think of it... I think moose is right. I aways step out for traffic to stop. Dh hates it, says i should wait. But hey, nah they stop. Visit any larger city. Hey, im walking here, right? Smaller town, ive forgotten the rules.1 -
In my city pedestrians have the right of way at intersections unless they have not yet entered the intersection and the car is going into the far lane (or something like that).
I don't have much as far as reflective clothes (little on my vest/shoes) but I carry a light and shine it both ways before entering the intersection. I will also make a right turn and run further down some blocks so I can have a better view/less traffic. I've almost been hit by people at stop signs though because they don't think cars or pedestrians would ever be coming? Most barely slow down in my neighborhood. And yet I see people out walking/running in all black, no reflective clothes and no light. I don't get it.0 -
