October 2018 Monthly Running Challenge

"By the way, everyone here should consider themselves a runner no matter how fast or slow they are(unless you find a dead body- then you're a mere jogger)."
I literally choked on my water laughing at this.
Hi new to the challenge. Finished a 5k today (16 minute mile pace). it was my first race since 2016 when i suffered some challenging medical issues that lasted through 2017. I've spent 2018 trying to reset my life. My goal is 25 miles for the month.
I'm going as a cat again for Halloween since I have a giant cat head that I do not want to just sit around gathering dust. I love the cooler weather and looking at the decorations for the next few months when i go outside. Generally it doesn't get bitterly cold here until January.10 -
Good to see you back @hanlonsk! I was missing you. I keep having dream with random MRC runners in them. Last night it was @Katharmonic... She was an older sister-type (i was in my 20's just had the twins) and she was helping me get situated. So random. Guess i get a little attached to yall.
Ha, @Elise4270 - if you knew me, I'm probably not the one you'd pick to help you with babies! LOL.
Welcome @amirahdaboss and all the newcomers to the challenge thread. You've got this! And we're all here to chat about it with you!

For right now (may change because I'm speadsheet obsessive and may need a numeric goal) the only October goal I will set is RUN MY FIRST FULL MARATHON! And live to tell the tale.
10/28/18 Marine Corps Marathon, Arlington VA

Hi joining the challenge again this time with an actual mileage goal of 50 miles. I want to run a 10 mile run by the end of the year. May not make that goal but I can try and hopefully get real close.
Question 1. Lack of daylight will become an issue. This is my first year running through fall and winter so I don't really know what the plan is. I'm winging it right now.
Question 2 . I usually dress up with the kids for a Harvest festival. They are way into superheroes this year. My daughter is Black widow and my son is The Hulk so I'm planning on Captain America.10 -

Friday here! I cant wait!!!3 -

That may explain why dream you told me I'd be on my own because you had a 1 oclock and i should figure out a nap time and stick to a schedule. Then a little one bit me. And later you
just poped your head around saying you had plans out with the girls... 😏 that kind of tough love guidance.. haha!

@AprilRN10 just school, starting the new job is behind you. You can kill it.
Welcome @unchainedzulu , @SarahRuth42 , @emmab0902 , @smaloch1852 , @amirahdaboss , and @SolanineNightshade .
Monthly questions:
1) strategy for cooler weather
Will let you know when it gets cooler, maybe next month🤣
2) since Halloween is midweek and I have to work and run the next morning, no dressing up but love to go as death when I do dress up.
@eleanorhawkins 🤣 at mom/🧙♀️
@marissaxzxzxz Try try again, you'll kill it this month.
@amymoreorless platform shoes/boots😉
@Elise4270 You're not already a vampire ninja runner🧛♀️🏃♀️
And I'm with @garygse fingers crossed for you @Scott6255 .
October goal is up another 10% to 67 miles for this month, with me running a slow Haunted Half in Jonesborough, TN, on 10/27.6 -
Thinking 70 for the month
I've done cold and holiday running. My main concern will be speed demon's feet safe. Old girl has done winter running.
Halloween...my favorite was Sarah from hocus pocus and a homemade mummy costume. This year i might go as Belle.6 -
I just fell short of my goal for September, but I'm giving it another go.
Goal: 25 miles/40 km7 -
In September I surpassed my goal of 85 miles by 16.1 miles so I guess I need to increase my goal. But I think that since there are only 4 Sundays (which are my long run days) in October I am just going to increase my goal to 95 for October.
Monthly Questions:
1) With holiday's coming up and the return of cooler or warmer weather. What's your strategy mitigating the particular challenges you face these last few months of the year?
Running when it is cold is a bit challenging for me. I never know what to wear, and I don't own a lot of cold weather gear. It may not really get cold until December or January although there is usually a day or two here and there. When it started getting hot in the spring I switched my runs from after work to in the morning before work. I'm not sure if I will switch back when it gets cold or not. Running before work really works well for my schedule. I may run during lunch if it is too cold early, but I usually run for about 50 minutes in the morning and would only have about 30 minutes available during lunch so I would have to shorten my runs and I don't really want to do that. I guess for a while I will just play it by ear.
2) pretend for a moment your 8, unless you really are dressing up, then dish.... What are you going to be for Halloween?
I probably won't do anything for Halloween this year. We used to go to a costume party every year, but the guy who threw them got divorced and remarried and doesn't have them anymore.
Welcome to all the newbies! This is a really fun and supportive thread.4 -

1. I don't really do holidays, so this time of year is more about weather challenges than anything else. I didn't run at all in December and January last year but I don't want that to be the case this year. I'm thinking of checking out a running group to help keep motivated and get winter running tips. That said, I'd also like to refocus on weight lifting - I've been looking at trying out a gym nearby and am hoping to finally learn barbell lifts. Last year I took most of December and early January as a maintenance/diet break and will probably do the same this year.
2. If the shirt I ordered gets here in time, I am totally going to be Captain Marvel for Halloween, or at least the running equivalent. Not that that will really mean much of anything, because as mentioned, I don't really do holidays. I just plan on running in a Captain Marvel shirt as much as possible.SarahRuth42 wrote: »Hello everyone!
I used to be a runner, and then some scheduling changes left me with absolutely no time to keep it up and I am ridiculously out of shape now... Found out recently that my blood pressure is a bit high. Trying to do what I can to get it under control without having to go on meds.
I like this "set your own goal and just come here and chat" approach. I want to get back into it, and I want some encouragement and motivation, but I don't need the pressure of a group that holds me to any expectations. I'm thinking this may be enough to push me to get out there again.
Yesterday I attempted day 1 of couch to 5k. I wasn't able to finish it, but i did about 20 minutes. I am going to keep attempting day 1 until I finish it. In that 20 minutes I covered about 1.5 miles, so I will start with that... three times a week = 4.5 miles per week... over 4.5 weeks = 20.25 miles. I will set my October goal at 25 miles, push myself a little, but not too much.
For the time being, my count will include running AND walking. I just need to get back out and moving again.
Welcome! I started running last year and never really got into C25K because I didn't want to spend more than 10-20 minutes out at a time (I ran 2.5 hours today so I don't know what happened). I say the best goals are the ones that are super, super easy to accomplish. Then you feel good about accomplishing something and are motivated to keep going!PastorVincent wrote: »@sarahthes Love the Halloween costume ideas! Dr. Who and Amy Pond!
The new season starts soon I think. Should be interesting to see where the new doctor takes it.
I lost interest towards the end of Matt Smith's run and as much as I wanted to love Peter Capaldi, just didn't get back into it. I'm looking forward to seeing what a new Doctor and (maybe more importantly for me personally) a new show runner can do.
ETA: Also welcome @unchainedzulu and @smaloch1852! And whoever posts while I'm editing this!4 -

That totally reminded me of a dream I had a week or so ago - the only thing I remember about it was someone telling me that @PastorVincent had written the Brave Little Toaster (the book, not the movie).5 -

Yeah, Peter Capaldi was not my favorite and I still miss Rose. And what ever happened with Jenny? They need to bring her back! But we stuck with it and we will tune in to the new one once it is on streaming someplace where we can get it.
There have been GREAT shows (The first angels, the library, to knew a few) and some really not so great ones. I think that is just par for the couse with a long running show like that.

I liked Peter Capaldi, but not as much as Matt Smith. But more than the 6th or 7th or 9th Doctors. I like 8 more. I like 5 more (weird true fact, David Tennant is Peter Davison's son-in-law), and 4 about the same. I haven't seen enough of 1, 2 or 3 to rank them. Although my younger son is named after the very first Companion, Ian, and the second Doctor's actor.
Either that or he's named after Magneto and Professor X.7 -

I have not seen much of the Doctor before the ninth. Just a handful of them. Someday I need to find them and watch all the doctors.0 -
Joining in this month! I have been a runner throughout my life, but I have been on a hiatus for a few years. A few months ago, I decided to get back into it. I was excited and couldn't wait to build that mileage...and then I wasn't. Wanted to be too speedy and not focused on endurance! But I also realized I felt different because I was so short of breath and tired. Now that my iron is increasing, I decided to get some walking in and then just twice this week...I ran on the track at the YMCA while my oldest was at her swim practice. It was slow and I am pretty sure some turtles passed me by, but I didn't stop and I wasn't out of breath. I ran two ENTIRE miles at one time!
So, I am setting my goal this month at 40 miles.

Amazon prime has them all1 -
@Scott6255 Hope the doctors visit is productive and something simple. Keep us updated.
@sarahthes I've seen every Dr. Who. I still loved Tom Baker's Who. They all take a bit of getting use to when he regenerates, but I enjoyed each one of them.
The newest coming out is season 11, right? I know it's been airing, and we don't get it over the air. So I'm always a season behind.
Oh River is my absolute favorite character! Loved the dynamics there! Probably my favorite seasons ever. And poor ol' Clara, wish she'd come back again somehow.3 -
This is my first time joining you all. I am not a runner, but a walker. I am setting my goal for the month of October to walk 50 miles.13
-
I have 2 half marathons in October so there's 26. I'll keep my goal at 60 since I am new but I have a feeling that it will be more. I will run as long as I have feet and am lucky to have a flexible work schedule at the time so dark wont be an issue.
I am often 8 in my head so of course I would dress up as a cowgirl which is what I wanted to be at 8. That and an accountant, wth?9 -
Wow, it's not even October yet and already on page 3!
I think I'm going to make 50 miles official since I had that as my stretch goal the past two months and made it. With the reservation that if injuries flare up all bets are off. I recently learned that a local running group meets at a high school track for speed training and I want to meet up with them and try it at least once.
I also hope to run the Left Bank Festival 5k on the 6th. Was considering making this my first 10K race, but their awards ceremony (following the festival and food!) is supposed to be "promptly" at 90 minutes after the 10K gun time, which suggests they expect only fast people to show up. I can easily make that time if all goes well but don't want to feel stressed.
Monthly question:
1) Last year was my first holiday season after being diagnosed diabetic, and I spent the holidays freaking out. This year I am much more chilled. I make sure there is food I want to eat, I know that if there isn't anything I can safely eat it's no big deal to go without, and I'm not afraid to just blow off food I don't want. Holidays are about more than food, or they should be. I have also learned that I can run in ALMOST any weather - I won't run in thunderstorms or glare ice or under zero degrees - but I can run on a treadmill at the gym if I have to, and I have a stationary bike in my own home if I need it. For emergency blood glucose control, I can always do squats.
2)
A bunch of my high school friends meet up at our local sf con every year - one of us is an author and regular presenter - and last year my high school bff and I were talking about how cool it was that sf finally had mature female characters to cosplay as. So we talked each other into going as Star Wars: the Last Jedi General Organa and Vice Admiral Holdo. She's the short brunette and I'm the tallish one with a long neck, so she is Leia and I am Holdo. The con's not until March next year but since I'm already working on my costume I hoped to have it ready for a dry run on Halloween. My husband hasn't decided what he's doing - the obvious "couples costume" for Holdo is Poe Dameron, but my husband has long red hair and a beard.
Quick wig test - slightly too dark for Holdo but close enough for a 12 dollar cheap wig!10 -
I'm in.

Ha. International community here - for us on the other side of the planet October 1st is pretty much done (I’m in bed). Love the wig, you look amazing - you’re going to totally rock it at Halloween and the sf con!!6 -

I am scaling way back this month and setting my mileage to 40. I don’t know how much I’ll get in this week following yesterday’s marathon-probably only a couple of short runs. I am also on call later this month, and I never know how crazy that will be. I do hope to run a 10K later in the month.
I love Doctor Who! Hubby is not happy about the transition to a female doctor, but we’ll see how she works out. I do like the actress from her work on Broadchurch.
1) With holiday's coming up and the return of cooler or warmer weather. What's your stragedy mitigating the particular challenges you face these last few months of the year?
It really doesn’t get crazy cold in Ga, so i will just layer. We’re not big holiday people, and I don’t go crazy with the food, so not a lot of worries there.
2) pretend for a moment you’re 8, unless you really are dressing up, then dish.... What are you going to be for Halloween?
I won’t really dress up this year, but since I was a chunky 8 year old and never had very cool costumes, I would probably pick something like a sexy cat costume, since
I finally feel like I have a halfway decent body to wear something like that!7 -
Hello! I am in for 25 miles this month7
-
I made my goal of 50 miles in September. I ran a total of 55.51 miles. My goal for October is going to be 65 miles. Good Luck everyone!9
-
It's October. I'm back, my leg feels great, and my watch has been replaced (YAY Suunto!!! It was under warranty).
September total: 2.6 km (!)
October goal: 80 km, about half of what I was doing consistently before I got hurt [swimming]
Congratulations @MobyCarp @marisap2010 I SO enjoyed reading your reports in the September thread!10 -
Monthly question.
1) With holiday's coming up and the return of cooler or warmer weather. What's your strategy mitigating the particular challenges you face these last few months of the year?
The swimming pool re-opens this morning after a month long maintenance cycle so I join the adult swim club ( Tues and Thurs ) - not quite a masters swim program but more intense than a session of lessons.
Replace the batteries in all my Headlamps so there is no excuse.
One of the ladies in the Running Club puts together a Speed Session Wednesday at the High School Track as long as the weather holds out.
I book a January and February running event so I have a goal to work towards.
Join the Friday night mixed Curling league - more social than serious with a good cardio workout if you are sweeping rocks.
Buy my season pass to the local Ski Hill so there is no excuse for not hitting the slopes after work, after swim club, after run club or after Curling.
2) pretend for a moment your 8, unless you really are dressing up, then dish.... What are you going to be for Halloween?
I plan on being in a Gorilla mask sitting on the front step with a switch in my pocket that will operate a small door opener. This will open the lid on the camping cooler at my feet where I will have a box of treats. The Teenager's will get the Shrieking Gorilla the little ones will just see the box creaking open and a gentle voice saying only take one treat. The ones who don't wear a costume get nothingWelcome @unchainedzulu @SarahRuth42 @emmab0902 @smaloch1852
Good to see you back @hanlonsk! I was missing you.
2) wow! ya'll are creative. I always had to be a ghost or a hobo...or a poor kid. But if i could be 8 for a night, think I'd like to be a nun... with a gun. haha! I don't know. I'm trying to be creative here... I still run and hide from outside when a car drives by, doubt I'd go anywhere. ohh, maybe i could be a runner! Wait! I wanna be a Vampire ninja runner!
A run club in GP ( 2 hrs drive ) is planning a Night Trail run starting at 9pm - so it will be Pitch dark and mandatory headlamps - would be a ton of fun because I know someone will set some ambush traps to scare them - that's what your running friends do - right??
At 5am this morning I had to go pick up my mom from the Greyhound Bus Depot as she was in Minot ND for a Trip. Say 4 runners out on the trails with headlamps and Flashing lights on there dogs. Looked like a Christmas Tree moving down the trails.
Yes welcome to all the new recruits and returning athletes who have been on hiatus.9
