    October Running Totals (miles)

    10/1 – rest day
    10/2 – 3.03 recovery run
    10/3 – 5.04 group run
    10/4 – 4.97 warm up, 2 miles @T, cool down
    10/5 – rest day
    10/6 – 8.90 paced run
    10/7 – 6.45 warmup + 6K XC race
    10/8 – rest day
    10/9 – 5.01 warmup + easy XC workout
    10/10 – 5.10 group run
    10/11 – 6.63 easy/tempo/easy

October running total to date – 45.13

Nominal October mileage goal: 150 miles

Real Goals: Recover well from Wineglass. Avoid reinjury. Build volume only to the extent consistent with recovery and injury avoidance.

Today's notes – Daylight has become an issue for evening workouts. I'm retired, so I left home at 4:30 and got to the site by 5. Of course, no one was there. Thought a bit, and started running at 5:06. The stated workout from the club web site was 2 x 10 minutes at T, with 1.5 minutes recovery, then 4 x 100m strides. That seemed a bit much for where I am in marathon recovery, and also looking to a 15K race on Saturday. So I decided 1-2 x 1 mile at T would be good. Ran 2 miles easy, ran a mile at T, backed off. Come the 4 mile mark, I wasn't motivated to speed back up. Wanted 6 to 7 miles, managed to add a pretty loop to get over 6 total, then took the short way back to base to pick up the pre-workout talk.

I missed the talk. Met a new recruit. Saw a handful of folks leave to start the workout, hung around and stretched while one other runner was waiting for her running partner to get there. Felt pretty good doing just one mile at T; the point of Thursday speed work before a weekend race is to remind my body it can run fast, without beating it up so much that it affects energy level on race day.

The mile splits . . . 7:43, 7:32 (oops), 6:41 (right on target for T on roads), 7:36, 7:34, 7:41, and a 7:56 pace for the last fraction of a mile. Looks like I'm naturally falling into MP, and not really slowing down to where easy ought to be. OTOH, the heart rate data looks reasonable for what I was trying to do.

Rest day tomorrow. I'm as prepared for the race on Saturday as I'm going to get. Goal is to win my age group; I just have to see who else in my age group shows up.

Stormy here today - very blustery and wet, but when I headed out (all amped to run in the rain following everyone's chatter about it here) I only had a few very light drizzly showers. It was an unusually early run for me - 6am - so I ran fasted and without caffeine and my pace reflects this. Fortunately, as I kept reminding myself as I trotted slowly along, I'm on taper so slow is good.

    Running challenge
    1 Oct: In bed, dying
2 Oct: Recovering from near death
3 Oct 4.6km, realise am still suffering the effects of near-death experience. Yoga too.
    4 Oct: 5.78km
    5 Oct: rest
    6 Oct: yoga
    7 Oct: hungover +gardening
8 Oct: 20.02km and now to taper
9 Oct: 5.8km with Miss 6 on her bike.
    10 Oct: yoga
    11 Oct: working
12 Oct: Thursday 10k, shortened to 9.61 as I had to be out the door at 7:30am.

    45.81 of 120km for September.

    Upcoming events
    29 October, Auckland Half
17 November, Xterra Trail Challenge Waihi 20.5km
8 December, West Coaster trail relay (10km leg)

Nice. Oh I'm coming to Auckland for a night on the 23rd. Staying in Grafton. suggestions on a nice running track in that area for the morning of the 24th? Was thinking about driving to Mission bay cause I like flat haha. Hows the Domain? I am free till 10am (yay!)

Fab. It would be good if we could meet for a run. I could probably get to the Domain by 9-9:30 (traffic). It has a lovely little loop but it's not flat - it's essentially a big hill with a museum (and hospital) on top. If you want flat we could run along the waterfront - Mechanics Bay is closer than Mission Bay as a start point. You choose!

So I signed up on the spreadsheet for hour 23. Don't know how to add my name to the list.
Edit: corrected the hour. Need to get more sleep, obviously

That would be awesome, I would love to meet for a run. I've literally just realised my 10 am meeting is a photoshoot (Auckland Uni is doing a profile on me woo hoo). bahaha, so probably need to push my run to the afternoon before I head home, or just do a good walk. I stay red for AGES after a run, and that would look awful! Are you free at all any other time during the day?

That actually could be better - getting into the city before nine is painful. I am free until 2pm before I pick the munchkins up from kindy and school - will that work? Alternatively, if you're heading north at around 1-1:30, you could travel via SH16 and swing by for a run round my local if you like... (I'll let you use my shower!)

5k on pavement in the cool October breeze! Halle-kitten-lujah! Temp 63, dewpoint 43 - I can't remember the last time our dewpoint was under 70. And I run so much faster in the cool. Last Saturday my race time was 31:28 I think, temp 94 and felt like I was gonna die of heatstroke. Today, ran the same in 28:17, within two minutes afterwards was dry and cool and walking along swinging my arms happily. Didn't even bring water, just had my bottle in the car.

Soon, of course, it's going to start pouring rain. But today was exquisite. We kept passing people walking with zipped up jackets - I was quite comfy in racerback and shorts. Funny how running changes your opinion of what constitutes comfortable weather.

For a change of pace we went back to our favorite park, the one they tore the bathrooms out of a month ago and were supposed to have built new ones by now. Not only are the new ones not finished, they are not yet begun. They have finished tearing the old building down and clearing it, so now there is just a concrete slab. And a single very nasty portapotty. I love this park but not enough to do without a flushing loo, so back to the other park for me.

I believe this is the corrected spreadsheet. I could be wrong, but I am listed on this one in the spots that I thought I signed up for. And I am not on the other one. I also thought we were doing 26 hours, not 24. Maybe @Elise4270 could let us know for sure.

I'm completely confused - was told I was on the spreadsheet but don't seem to be. However I will be running 2-4 pm CDT which is 1900-2100 GMT if I have converted correctly, filling the 23-24 gap. Can move a couple of hours in either direction if needed.

@MegaMooseEsq - I forgot to mention earlier about your watch getting activated and resetting your activity. Assuming you are still using the Apple Watch you can 'lock' the screen so that doesn't happen. I don't recall how to do that but have locked mine accidentally and then couldn't figure out how to unlock it :) but I am sure if you look it up and know how to before hand it will work!
@7lenny7 - unfortunately Hobbes the Vizsla had a malignant mast cell tumor. He had surgery on Tuesday to remove it and we are waiting on the pathology report to find out what the next steps are. In the mean time I am trying largely unsuccessfully to keep him quiet. As the vet said - no walks, no running and no jumping! LOL - we are 0 for 3 so far...
@LaDispute57 - Wow getting @7lenny7 and you both back to the challenge today is awesome! Hope we can help with that motivation even though we can't help with the untrained 50K!

Trainer told me tonight to pass on the 10K this Sunday. I am still holding out hope that I can do it in some fashion but will just have to wait and see how my foot is feeling. It hurts to stand, hurts to walk and hurts worse to run... Unless there is a miracle I will probably have to give up my slots for Dennis and this makes me sadder than missing the 10K honestly. I will be making an appointment with the ortho doc to figure out what the issue is and the way forward.

I'm so sorry your foot isn't feeling better! At least you and poor Hobbes can keep each other company.

This is what I’d been looking at too (clearly, since I’m on this one and not the other). I can’t do the first two slots I signed up for but can still do the last three.

@noblsheep , @Scott6255 , @garygse , @LaDispute57 Miles for Dennis - Would one of you be able to pick-up that 2 hour block hours 5 & 6 between Carol and @HonuNui . I have put myself in for the 3 hour gap after @HonuNui which has me starting at 2300 local time - running in the dark like an Ultra Runner. It's a good thing I know all the RCMP ( Police Officers ) in town so I can give them a warning. Planning to run until I have 26.2 km. Water stash at each end of the park trails.

@7lenny7 like @Elise4270 mentioned using the spoiler helps the page load faster as the pictures can load in the background after the main text/images are loaded. Sounds like you had a great summer and that was a great video clip of the water hazard.

All the chatter about strength training has reminded me how seriously deficient I am in that area! I know it would help with the running but I lack the motivation. I guess it's going to boil down to a mindset of "needing" to do it whether or not I "feel" like it. When I do strength work it is usually in the evenings. My hubby is already retired and so when I get home he wants the evenings to be our time together. Which is nice he feels that way. But then I feel guilty for saying "I'm headed downstairs to workout for awhile." I'll figure something out.

I'll take a look at the spreadsheet - would love to help out with the run for Dennis.

    June goal - 44/44
    July goal - 52/52
    August goal - 55/57 miles
    Sept goal - 72/60 miles
    Oct goal - 17/60 miles

Sept. 30 - Wineglass Half Marathon; Corning, NY
October 7 - Viking Dash Half Marathon; Toledo, OH

@shanaber Hobbes the Vizsla is adorable. How old is he? Crossing my fingers that pathology report provides good news... and your foot heals, too!

Headed out shortly for W2D3 with my dogs. I'm grateful it's a bit warmer than yesterday - the car windows were frosted when I left for work. Oh that reminds me, I should order new yaktrax, or something better for running. The walking ones I bought snapped and unraveled last winter (probably from walking on bare asphalt).

This is what I’d been looking at too (clearly, since I’m on this one and not the other). I can’t do the first two slots I signed up for but can still do the last three.

    @Avidkeo , @ContraryMaryMary
Miles for Dennis link - I have asked a few other runners ( they probably haven't read my previous post yet ) then realized that you are the closest to Carol ( @Orphia ) for TimeZone - Would one of you be able to pick-up that 2 hour block hours 5 & 6 between Carol and @HonuNui. This would have you starting your run at 1pm on Saturday?
I have put myself in for the 3 hour gap after @HonuNui which has me starting at 2300 local time - running in the dark like an Ultra Runner. It's a good thing I know all the RCMP ( Police Officers ) in town so I can give them a warning. Planning to run until I have 26.2 km. Water stash at each end of the park trails.

That's the only hole left in the plan-schedule.

No workout yesterday - I’m trying to maintain my sanity during this house-buying process by giving myself permission to be as flexible with my schedule as I need to be - thankfully my supervisors are totally understanding and we don't have any pressing deadlines right now so they gave me the go-ahead to take whatever time I need over the next few weeks. I don't get PTO but I do set my own schedule, so that's nice. On Wednesday that meant going for an afternoon run instead strength, yesterday that meant a rest day. Today I’d like to get a run in but am trying to play it by ear.

@7lenny7: Welcome back! I’ve never run any of the Securian races before - I only started running in July of last year then took most of the winter off and ran my first-ever race in July of this year. I’ve been bit by the bug, though, and think the 10K might be my distance for now. I’ve got my second half marathon next weekend (AHH!) but am not ready to commit to staying in HM shape over the winter until I see how my weekly mileage shakes out. What’s the other paved race you hit every year? Maybe I’ll see you at Securian!

I don’t recall ever seeing a conversation about using spoilers for photos but it seems like it’s become more common as the threads have gotten longer. I don’t mind if people do it or not, but I usually try and do it myself especially if I’ve included several pictures. I’ve never had issues loading the page but I usually log in on a browser and have a zippy connection.

@shanaber: OF COURSE! You’re brilliant, as usual. I looked it up and you can lock the screen by swiping right after starting a workout and tapping the water button (conveniently labeled “lock”). You unlock by turning the crown. On the older watches/OS you locked by holding down the side button but that function has been removed, probably because of people locking or calling 911 on accident.

I’m so sorry to hear about Hobbes. One of our dogs (Bowie) has been slowly declining over the last few months and I lost a cat suddenly last year. It’s always hard, no matter how it happens. You just never know what will happen - Bowie has seemed reasonably happy and comfortable for six months longer than we’d expected, and I thought that cat was going to be around for another decade. We had a scare just last night where Bowie didn't want to come upstairs but he bounced back after food and meds, so we're keeping on for now. *hugs*
