@skippygirlsmom I am appalled by what Skip and you have had to endure. I hope you do some good with that track program. Just horrible. Hugs to you and Skip. I'm heartbroken that her experience was so horrible, yet so very thankful she had you to turn too.
Definitely add you and Skip to my prayers.0 -

An hour on the dreadmill yesterday. Have a weird knee pain where I smashed it into asphalt last year falling off a bike. No idea why, I thought it had healed long ago.
@skippygirlsmom Sorry to hear about all that. Not enough words to express the sympathy. Hope she can take the time at home to regroup and recover.1 -

So, run report...
First, burned foot seems fine. At least I did not notice anything form it. The "good" thing is the burn is towards the back of the midfoot, and I do not land there.
Second I was yawning and tired before I started. Nothing like having family stay with you (and two full-sized dogs) to cut back on getting a good nights sleep.
So I decided to just run easy and shoot for 2 hours. Started out and it was 50(!!). So put on the shirt that I thought might be causing my issues and set out on a short 1-2 mile loop near home. No problems with the shirt, so I pushed out to the bigger loop and ran. Got about 1600 or so feet of elevation, which is good cause when I run/walk at work I only get like 100 or something. The park by work is a river bank and fairly level.
As I passed 9 miles my hands started getting cold. Temp dropped to the mid-40s and while that is plenty warm for running, I have some unknown problem where my fingers and toes can not take the cold at all. At 45 degrees they will be painfully cold without a heat pack. Which I did not bring, so I cut a big corner and headed completing only about 10.35 miles instead of something closer to a HM like I expected. Still, in the space of that last mile, my hands went from chilly to painful enough I was trying to hold them in my armpits for warmth.
Took off the shirt and checked my back in the mirror, no new welts. So it was not the shirt. My newest guess is that the second layer I was wearing was causing a rubbing issue. More research needed.

@skippygirlsmom I am glad she is taking a semester at the local college. She needs some time to mourn the loss and rebuild her perspective. She will need you to support her through this rebuilding, and probably some extra grace and patience.5

I ran 7 miles today. I was sort of dreading the run. It was about 54F, but there were 20-22 mph NNW winds so it felt pretty cold. I think wind may be my least favorite type of weather so I wasn't looking forward to running in it. I wore long pants and a jacket and gloves plus a headband to cover my ears. It worked pretty well, but I really do need to invest in some sleeves. Overall it was a good run. It is really hard to run in wind like that so I felt pretty good about myself for doing it. I was slower than usual, but I kind of expected that. I should be able to reach my goal for this month, but I sure do hope that this wind dies down some.
@skippygirlsmom I am so sorry to hear about Skip's problems at school this semester. I am so glad that she was able to go to you about it. Prayers and hugs to both of you.

Cute puppies are the best - sometimes even better than hugs! @mbaker566 are you going to keep this little cutie?
Nope, i have him a few extra days since he has a cough. He's got a few people interested in him.amymoreorless wrote: »I'll make a better post later.

@PastorVincent that's his concentration face. His smile lights up a room. My other friend looked even rougher.1 -

Been away for a couple of days and wow over 100 posts behind again. Dang y'all talk a lot :-)
@skippygirlsmom I was in tears reading your post, what a horrible time she's had. Thank God you have her home and she can gradually work to accept and move past this experience. If it was me I'd be livid and probably doing a lot of things I'd regret later!
@PastorVincent do you hands change colour when they get really cold? Do they go numb or tingly and painful when they warm up again? Could be Raynaud's?
I had an awesome adventure of a country run this weekend!
Yesterday was 2 weeks out from my first HM and 14km was scheduled. Yet another longest ever long run. I was looking forward to this run as we were staying out in the sticks and I'd earmarked a nice unpaved lane that runs alongside a railway track. We hiked it one way a few weeks back and apart from a little stream that we jumped over easily enough it was just a sandy track with nice views, a few little slopes up and down and a friendly dog that decided to come out under a fence and accompany us for a few miles.
That was a sunny Saturday in a group of 4.
I started a report which ended up 16 pages long so have scraped that. Let's just say I almost broke my neck walking down steep wet cobbled streets on the way to where the lane started. Had a stand off with an angry cow which growled (growled!) at me and didn't want to let me pass because it had ended up on the wrong side of the fence and was trying to protect its babies. Tried to leap the stream, which had got a lot wider, and ended up putting a foot in it. Learned how heavy your feet get and how hard it is to lift them when they're caked with mud. Met a couple with 4 dogs off their leads, one of which decided it wanted me to be the mother of its babies and tried to mount my back while its buddies climbed up my front and the owners went "oh sorry we didn't see you".... I'm dressed in bright blue trousers and a grey shirt with reflective stripes....plus I'm playing music quite loudly on my phone AND singing along to it, and you didn't see OR hear me coming along a perfectly straight stretch of track? Oooookay. Came out unscathed apart from muddy pawprints ALL over me and a rather nasty sticky patch on my jacket that I'd rather not think about tyvm. Had the bright idea on the way home that if I climbed up alongside the railway (it's very quite, only 1 or 2 trains per day) I would be able to avoid the stream and the worst of the mud. Hadn't thought about the fact that it's all mounds of stones and concrete slab tidings up there, so there was more climbing and scrambling than running. Good exercise for the ankles but lucky I didn't roll them, plus I did think at one point if I fell down the steep embankment I'd be ********d. Managed to get back down to the lane, my phone announced I'd passed 13 kilometres. Wow, I was so distracted/entertained by events it flew by! First time that has happened, usually I'm doing maths in my brain the entire time of how much further I need to go. Not yesterday, yesterday I was really enjoying myself and felt I could run forever! Got back to where the cow was and she'd moved off the lane so I could get past with no trouble. Sped up a bit though just in case. 14km and I didn't want to stop running. Carried on for another half km before I decided I didn't want to overdo it that close to race day and injure myself so slowed to a walk. Bad news: I'm 3 kilometres from home and it's ALL up a steep hill. I think I might have hit the wall a bit then, it took me more than half an hour to walk those 3 kilometres and there was one point coming through the village it was only the thought of how much my husband would laugh at me that stopped me calling him to come get me.
I eventually got home, stuffed my face with toast and coffee and had a long hot shower. It never did rain on me. With hindsight the cow, railway, dog parts were pretty scary being on my own but GOD I LOVED THAT RUN lol.
The total distance as per Endomondo was 18.25km in 2 hours 40 minutes. And almost 4 of those km were walking before and after. That gives me confidence I probably CAN do the 21km HM within the 3 hour time limit, especially as it is mostly flat. I had been a bit worried about that, so great mental boost.
Today, my legs feel pretty ok so far, my dodgy knee is a little tender but nothing horrific. However, I appear to have spots on the sides of my backside that are as angry as that cow was. Ouch! Is that what they call engaging the glutes?
When can I go again?

@zeesparrow Great! Kudos on running 5km
@Machafin @amirahdaboss @rheddmobile @garygse @dreamer12151 @MegaMooseEsq (hope I'm not forgetting anyone) Congratulations on your PRs!
@MegaMooseEsq Yay! Great news that your mother is doing better, and that you now get to enjoy your own house! And you have a running room there? That sounds like the most awesome room ever! So much space for running gear...
@PastorVincent Scary story! I once singed my hair thanks to a gas oven, so I'm a bit wary of them. I am glad my current one just has gas for three of the hotplates, the forth one and the oven are electric. I'm glad noone was seriously hurt.
@saranthes Yay, new shoes! They look very nice
@Orphia Great race, and great photos!
@Avidkeo I bought a Camelbak once, but the one I had didn't fit right, it was chafing at the side of my neck, so I exchanged it for a Salomon Agile 7. It has a bit of extra space, for example for phone, some gels and a rain jacket. I also use it as a backpack (without the water bladder) if I run to work, it can hold my badge, keys, and a set of clothes (save for a jacket and shoes, which I always keep at the office).
If I have less to transport, I love my Nathon Firecatcher Vest. It's really minimal material, but I can still put a 1.5l water bladder in the back, phone and some gels in the front, so all I need for road runs in summer.
@skippygirlsmom I am so sorry to hear how badly Skip's time at college went!! I wish both of you all the best
@eleanorhawkins Wow, that run sounds like quite an adventure!! If you can do 18.25km in 2h40 in conditions like that, you have no need to worry about the 3h cutoff for the HM

I don't have anything exciting to report. No holidays here, no races either. It snowed for a bit early last week, but towards the weekend it warmed up again and started to rain. My run on Saturday was mostly dry, my runs on Friday and Sunday were not.
At least Sunday it was bright outside. Friday's run was at night. At some point a car driver decided "hey look, someone's running in the rain, I guess she likes water. I'll do her a favour and drive to that huge puddle right next to her as fast as possible so she gets even more of it" (at least that's my theory of what he could possible have been thinking ). I jerked my hand up to wipe the water from my face and somehow managed to knock my glasses off my nose. So then I got to search for my glasses by the roadside, in the dark, only by the light of my chestlamp, *without my glasses*. Fun! One more reason I usually prefer contact lenses for running...8 -
@skippygirlsmom So sorry you and Skip had to go through all that you did. That's awful! You're right. We do all and have made mistakes and poor decisions. The key is to learn from the experiences and try to move on as best you can. It sounds like you are both doing that. I will keep you both in my prayers.biketheworld wrote: »Had one of my best runs this morning in awhile. We are a crazy bunch! Glad you did not end up cow food, or mama to new puppies at least!

So I am sad to report after exceeding the manufactures milage recommendations by 5 (or more) times, I am finally retiring my shoes. But the good news is I bought a pair back during Amazon's Prime Day sale, and have them on deck:
It will be odd running for a bit until I can beat them in to shape. *sigh*8 -
ha ha @eleanorhawkins that sounds my kind of run!
Just a tip - don't run from cows. Cows want nothing better than to play (or squash you if you get too close to their babies). Maintain eye contact, and walk swiftly. If you run, they think you want to play a game (particularly young boy cows, they love games with people). Playing games with cows are never a good idea. They can't hold the pieces.

So I looked it up
https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/raynauds-disease/symptoms-causes/syc-20363571
Maybe? I dunno that I noticed them go white/blue, but definitely red and definitely tingle/etc. It is pretty sudden too. I mean at 50F degrees I am fine no issues at all. At 45F it is too painful to continue.
But that Mayo clinic page pretty much says nothing can be done. So guess does not matter that much.

@eleanorhawkins re: hitting a wall - are you fueling at all? Because 14k is about when I really have to eat something or crash. I have a few gummies about mile 7 to give them time to kick in and it's much better after that.1

juliet3455 wrote: »Cheers, I'm in! And will use this challenge to motivate me to run in the evenings on the days when I woun't be able to bike because of rain or snow.
I'll aim for 15 miles running and 215 miles biking. If the latter reduces I have to upgrade the former, to compensate ;-)
@dewit Welcome to the group. As a gambling man I bet $1.00 that those numbers will change - 215 miles running and 15 miles biking after we drag you over to the dark side. But if you had snow tires and screw cleats on your bike - snow & ice would never stop you from commuting.
Haha, I missed this comment of yours, @juliet3455 . How much time do I have, to prove you wrong?
Judging by today and the forecast for the week, I'd better not bet at all, though: it was drizzling today, it still does, so I took the public transportation. I still sob. For tomorrow they announced light snowfall... Yet, the sun should come out on Wednesday, so I'll take revenge! Just have to come up quickly with plan B until then! So far, no real update:
11/20 - bike 18.7m (30k) in ~2hrs
11/21 - run 3.7m (6k) in ~35min
11/22 - bike 18.7m (30k)
11/23 - bike 18.7m (30k)
11/24 - home workout
11/25 - ice skating (does that count as running? )
Cumulative: bike 56 miles / 90k + run 3.7 miles / 6k
Goal (for the 10 days of November that I have): 7.5 miles running + 90 miles biking.4 -
@PastorVincent I get Raynauds and it tends to be a change in temperature thing for me. So it’s less about what the actual outside temperature is, and more about the sudden drop. It doesn’t matter if it’s 12 degrees C or -35 degrees C, I can suddenly get an attack.
There is little that can be done. Some people try reducing caffeine as it’s a vasoconstrictor, but I like coffee. Come people have luck with using ‘wristies’ wrist warmers, which keep the veins in the wrists warmer and by extension keep the blood vessels in the fingers open longer than without. It’s also about management of your environment – I put my gloves on before getting in the car in winter (our winters are mild) , and even then it can take 20-30 minutes of the heater on to feel the tips of at least three of my fingers, and for them to go from pure white to ‘normal’.
given your heart history, having Raynaud's symptoms doesn't surprise me, even if that's not the actual cause.0 -
@skippygirlsmom - I finally read your post. As a mom of 2 girls this makes me so angry!!!!!!!! I hope she is able to transfer to another school easily and with no penalty. I agree with you to not just let this go. Otherwise, this will continue. I would not want another child (young adult) to go thru what Skip has had to endure. Stand firm, Mama!!! Sending prayers your way!!!!!
@pastorvincent - nice kicks!0 -

It just rang a bell with me because my mother's partner suffers with it and I know he is often in agony with his hands in the winter. Hand warmer thingys, gloves and pretty much put up with it was what the doctors told him :-(
@rheddmobile Well I run first thing in the morning with nothing more than coffee and a banana in me, but I take jelly babies on long runs and gulp one down every 15 minutes or so (which is probably actually total overkill but it seems to work for me) so I don't think it was a lack of fuelling wall. More just an OMG I've just covered more distance running than ever before, am caked in mud, have had encounters with growling cows and amorous dogs and now I have to get up that huge hill in front of me to get home! Next Sunday will be 16km (10 miles?) on the flat seafront so we'll see what happens then. I reckon though if I can plan it so I finish running near to home and not like 2 miles away down a big hill I should be ok!
