I was going to run this afternoon but I bought three utility carts at Target and spent time assembling them. It should count as running as one of the carts is now holding my running and some miscellaneous workout gear.10

No run today I just ran out of time...8

Might be some other horrible issue, I dunno. All I know is that it sucks and it puts a way higher limit on my cold weather running than if I did not have it. 50F is about as cold as I can run without hand warmers. Hand/toe warmers only work to so cold. Probably not much below 20F.
I will check for colors, but I know it is very painful, and tingly when trying to rewarm up in water. It could simply be a side effect of my heart condition too but I have been told my circulation is fine.
I should add that my fingers do not just feel cold, they are cold. When other people touch them they jerk back in shock saying my hands feel like ice. So I worry it is dangerous to let them stay that way.0 -
I got a PB on the 1.6 mile/2.4km run! 17:54, which is 2:06 better than my last PB!

@PastorVincent Haha, loved it! I know, it hasn't been funny for you.
This snow takes me by surprise , I still hope I can bike tomorrow.
Does walking count? I got off the bus two stops earlier, just to extra walk (had be walking here and there yesterday, just to compensate a bit...).
Do you people run when it snows? I find even walking a challenge, it feels so slippery under my feet...

Ran yesterday's bike route (plus a short detour to school drop-off with kiddo on his bike). It felt really hard today, but I'm not sure why - Cold? Used to going faster on that route? Tired? Who knows... I felt better towards the end of the run, and tomorrow will be either a bike ride or rest day.
Met November's running goal!

Yes, you can count walking if you like
And yes, many of us run in snow. We may need to adapt clothing, shoes, routes & other things, like slowing down, shortening our stride and avoiding sudden turns if it's slippery, but it can be done! Last year I trained in the snow for a January marathon (race itself was in a warm climate), and I'm a pretty average mid- to back-of-the-pack runner. It definitely builds character!6 -
I don't quite understand what happened this morning. Although my legs felt ok yesterday morning and it was just my backside that ached from Sunday's adventure/long run, after a day of work and almost 3 hours on my feet ironing and cooking at the end of the day my dodgy knee and shin were not happy by the time I went to bed. This morning the DOMS were still there but not as bad and the knee/shin were just a little tender, so I set out to do what has become my usual twice weekly 8km run over these last few weeks. First mile was horrible, last mile was horrible but the middle was fine and although it felt hard it felt no harder than usual when I'm tired.
However, that run always takes me somewhere between 59 minutes 15 seconds and an hour. Today it took me 56 minutes 32 seconds. WTH? I can only assume this means being sore makes me run faster?
Oh it also brought me to this month's goal distance.

@polskagirl01 Didn't cancel out the extra calories I took in during the conference, but it's ok. My lifestyle day-to-day is what matters.

First run of a Half Marathon training plan.
I've been pretty bad with running lately (I haven't) but I can't keep saying to myself, Oh, well I've done a tough Half and a tough marathon, I know I can do it, and then attempt to run 13 odd miles without actually making an effort to train for it.
So I have to suck it up and do the training.
I seem to have many things to train for right now. I'm also training for hiking in the Pyrenees in January, and an even bigger long distance trek across the Isle of Skye in May. So I'm having to fit runs around long hikes with a pack, and getting my overall body strength up.
Quite enjoyed this morning's run too - even ran a bit faster and didn't die!!11 -

Sometimes I cannot run on the path in the parks, because between being shoveled, thawing and refreezing they are a slippery mess. But running in the untouched snow right next to it is fine.
If the "untouched snow" is deep enough, you get an extra workout I did a 10k trail race last year in fresh, knee-deep powder snow. It took me nearly 1:45 to finish (vs a 10k PR of slighly less than 1 hour). The trail looked like this:
Yes, it was also after dark, so you needed good headlights if you didn't want to get lost in the forest ^^ . Here's an official photo from the start line:
It's actually even a thing. It's called "trail blanc" here (white trail). Last year I found a list with about 50 of them. Most of them happen to be in the mountains, so in addition to the snow, you also have some elevation... I already have one in mind that I want to do next January
Unfortunately, most of my "snow runs" are rather done on the slushy, icy mess on the side walks around my village. Very slowly and carefully to avoid slipping. But unless it's really icy, it can be done.

If you have good trail shoes you should be okay running in snow, but it takes some learning how to run in it. I won't run in glare ice, it's just too slick. Memphis gets a lot of glare ice - rains during the day then freezes on surfaces at night.
There are ways to run even on glare ice, if you have yaktrax or screw shoes, but since it's usually only a couple of days at a time here I just skip it.0 -

Ha ha. It’s billed as a ‘challenging route aimed at experienced hillwalkers’ with no signposts and requiring extensive self-navigation.
I am not an experienced hillwalker, have barely done any backpacking in the wilds and certainly nothing multi-day and currently the group is struggling even to work out how to get to the start (what kind of place has no buses on weekends?) so heaven help us!!!
I might have to do a lot of training before then!!!!

I got to run 4 miles this morning in 28F wind chill. 2 layers on top(balaclava and wicking hat),3 layers over core(wicking, thermal, wind barrier) and 2 layers on bottom(wicking,thermal/wind) and some reflective gloves my wife bought for me in winter weight material. Running in the cooler weather never used to be an issue, ran in MN in winter time down to 0F with no problems in the past. Now anything 32F or below I find myself bundling up. Oh well, don't want to get sick again so will just train in layers I guess. HAGD everyone.7

After a bunch of research and great advice here and elsewhere, I went to a store that specializes in trail shoes and got a pair of these. I’ve only taken them out in snow a couple of times so far this year but they absolutely made a huge difference.1 -
Rest day yesterday. Raining and 40F/4C this morning. Dogs weren't interested in going out in the rain so I ran my first time by myself... with my new Garmin. I ran a little faster than I do with the dogs, which meant faster than I *should*, so I was grateful when my 2 miles were done. I had planned on going farther today, but didn't check the plan before I left. Oops.
Edited to add: this is also the first run (aside from the 5k) where I'm only measuring actual running distance. Woo hoo!

Another shoe question....
I will be doing my first trail run 5k on Saturday. No snow, but it will be rainy. My current fav running shoe is an AT shoe. I would consider them to be minimally offroadish.
I have a WONDERFUL pair of Keen hikers that feel like a runner. Although heavier, they provide great stability. Considering the trail will be wet and it is quite steep - 2x loop with 800' elevation change, so ups and downs...
Would I be better off to use my tried and true ATs, or play it safe and wear the keens? I feel like the keens will be more slip resistant. I am in the Mountains of N. Ga - so will be dealing with wet grasses and slick red clay mud.
I imagine this will be more of a walk/jog than a run. I am leaning towards the keens. All feedback welcome - even if you are telling me I am overthinking this1 -
@beka3695 are the keens shoes, mid-ankle or boots?
If boots, they may not have enough 'give' around the ankle, but I have run in 'walking shoes' before now.
If it's rainy and muddy, you'll appreciate the bigger lugs on the sole which provide grip. Having said that, if the lugs on the Keens are close together, then that sticky red clay mud will become your worst nightmare, making your feet bigger and bigger and your soles heavier....
I'd probably go with the Keens myself. Better to be slowed down and stay fracture free than spend your race slipping and sliding.0 -

@dewit As @polskagirl01 said running in snow-icy conditions really makes you concentrate on your form - foot landing under neath your hips and a gentle pushoff to reduce toe breakout.
Good Trail Shoes
or old road shoes with screws added as ice-traction cleats.
Also the shoes you walked home in did they have a traction foot-bed or a stylish flat base with no traction?2 -

The Keens are a hiking shoe. More like a cross trainer - wide toe box. Thanks for agreeing with me :-)1 -

i saw that @rheddmobile that's pretty cool.12 -
I don't know if anyone else read this article in Runner's World on the new physical activity guidelines for adults but they haven't really changed much. What really got me was the line in bold!
'Experts still recommend that adults log at least 150 minutes to 300 minutes moderate-intensity (say, like brisk walking) each week, or 75 minutes to 150 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity, like running. An equivalent combination of moderate- and vigorous-intensity aerobic activity would work, too.
The guidelines still continue to emphasize the importance of a balanced exercise routine. You should be shooting for two or more days of strength training a week, too.
You’re probably already familiar with those numbers, but they definitely deserve repeating, since the majority of Americans are falling short of those guidelines. In fact, 50 percent of Americans don’t meet the recommended 150 to 300 minutes per week of moderate-intensity physical activity and 30 percent of people report no physical activity at all'0 -
@eleanorhawkins @PastorVincent @girlinahat & others I have Reynaud's. Have had it for many years, mainly my hands & feet, but in some instances, will happen with my nose, too. And it can happen anytime I get chilled, inside or out, winter (Even a pseudo-one like down here in Florida!) or summer. There have been many days at work where I am sitting on my hands because they are white, into purple because it is so cold in the center. And yes, when he blood starts flowing back in - YOWZA!1

Get started on the run, wondering why I'm having difficult breathing, then it dawns on me- I only did 1 of my inhalers this morning, forgot the Pro-Air before the run! So I'm trying to calm myself & get a rhythm to breathe, then the other mind games kick in : "Are you REALLY sure you want to do this? Why did you register already? OMG, there is not way you are going to be ready in time! Shoulda just picked the 5K, you know you can do that"....none of that calm zone I had before. I'm putting it down to the fact I registered last night for it, so now the self doubt kicks in, hopefully I can shut it down!

I ran 3.7 miles today at lunch. It was a pretty god run. It was still pretty windy which isn't my favorite to run it, but it was SW 15 mph compared to the NNW 22 mph from Sunday and it was 63F feels like 63F instead of 54F feels like 47F so it was a lot better than Sunday. Once I got into the run it felt pretty good. Other than that I've been having a pretty crappy day, so I was really glad I was able to run. Hopefully tomorrow will be better. I do think I will reach my goal this month, so I am happy about that.
