@BruinsGal_91 Yes, I'm a little geeky with the run tracking spread sheet though I've resisted the urge to graph the data.
Did a track workout yesterday and felt my right hamstring and upper calf twinged after 2 miles of warming up. I've had off and on trouble with the hamstring when I try to do speed work but the right calf is a new thing.

Big sale on Under Armour right now, big enough that some of it is actually reasonably priced. This article has the links and coupons:

Whaaa? The only reason to use a spreadsheet is to look at trend data. I love graphs and charts!
Hope the hamstring/calf is nothing! Id hate to see it ruin a perfectly good spreadsheet/graph.5 -

Thanks @Elise4270! I know but I already get my fill of spreadsheets at work. If I graph it I know I'll get trapped into an analysis/manipulation vortex and then it wouldn't be as fun. My race results are where I really track my progress.4 -
I saw the physio yesterday and he tells me my calf/achilles/general leg pain is nerve related. I've been given a series of exercises to get the nerve moving (apparently it can move 10cm which surprised me) rather than stretching it. Once it has calmed down (3-6 weeks) we will shift focus improving the range of motion in my calves (he's not blaming years of wearing high heels for my shorten calf muscles, but he's not not blaming it!).
Upshot is, we're working on a solution and I should be back running before Christmas, with a bit of luck!20 -
December goal: 60 miles
12/1: 5.11 miles
12/4: 6.25 miles
12/5: 3.11 miles
14.47/60 miles completed
I went ahead and ran at lunch. 3.11 uneventful miles. I ran to the cemetery and did a loop there and then ran to the park and ran the path there and then headed home. It was a nice run and I'm glad I got it done. Hopefully this evening I will actually get my Christmas decorations up.

Run at least 4 5k races.
Get under 30:00 and a PR for 5k.
Average at least 135k per month, which would put me over 1,000 miles for the year.
Didn't get to run until this afternoon. Tried to run toward the quick end of my easy window.

Today I got to run 4.09 miles. It was 29 degrees and very lightly snowing. I wore Peregrines, crew socks, trail leggings, running shorts, butt coat, racerback, long sleeved tech shirt, long sleeved tee shirt, windbreaker, sleeves, gloves, buff, and headband. I managed to get ready in just under 20 minutes, which felt like an improvement over past efforts.
I've decided that since I’m still on the steep part of the winter running learning curve, I’d make a point to write down lessons I learn from my runs. So today I learned:
- Trail shoes aren’t really necessary on the paths around the lake when it hasn’t seen new accumulation in a couple of days, but are really useful on the sidewalks leading to and from the lake. For the race this weekend (three laps around the similarly-trafficked next lake over) I’m going to wear the Ghosts but have my husband keep the Peregrines if I want to change after the first lap.
- When wearing the Peregrines I really need to pay attention to my footfalls. My usual gait seems to hurt my ankles, I’m thinking because I’ve gotten used to the high drop on the Ghosts. Aiming to hit more on my forefoot rather than mid-foot seemed to help.
- Nothing will really keep my butt warm, but shorts over leggings under the butt coat is the best I’ve found so far.
- There are a lot more winter runners around here than I expected. I was passed by or crossed paths with maybe a dozen people. Minnesotans are a special kind of people.
- Microwave popcorn is a lovely post-run snack.
@ctlaws44, @Elise4270: I haven’t graphed my running data yet, but knowing that I can if I want makes me happy.
December Total: 4.09 miles7 -
@rheddmobile - lol - your husband speaks the truth!
@kgirlhart - so sorry about your loss. It's nice you got some runs in despite it all.
Came home from work, changed and got in a daylight run. Just 3 miles. Arms are really sore so I may not lift tomorrow and just do a run. Unless I wake up and they feel great. This cold is finally almost gone!

Easy 8 miles this evening. Only after 6 did it truly feel easy. Temp felt good when I started (sun was up). Colder than *&^% about half way through when the sun went down.
Happy birthday to me.

December Running Totals (miles)
12/1 – 18.15 partly paced run
12/2 – 8.24 easy
12/3 – rest day
12/4 – 6.51 easy with a few fartleks
12/5 – 6.31 easy
December running total to date – 39.21
Nominal December mileage goal: 160 miles
Real Goals: Recover from the strained hamstring. Work back to running faster only as the hamstring allows. Run Freezeroo #1 as allowed by my physical condition on race day, with a blind eye toward age group standings. Have a solid base of 40 miles per week by the end of December to start Boston training.
Today's notes – Sports doc appointment this afternoon. Went in thinking this would be the last appointment for the hamstring, and he came to the same conclusion. Told him how things went, and that I was thinking maybe running 4 x 800 at T next Tuesday. He said before the, do 4 to 6 pick-ups in an easy run, much like I did yesterday. Also, there wasn't much to work on with the hamstring. Call him back if I have problems, otherwise ease back into a normal training routine.
Got out to run a bit before 6 PM. It was full dark, but the worst of the rush hour traffic was done. Ran a familiar route around the neighborhood, enjoyed seeing a lot of Christmas lights, and just plain didn't worry about running too hard. Not that I ran super hard today; I might have had some segments at marathon pace, but it was mostly easy.

Happy Birthday @Scott6255! Hope it was a good one!1

Just skimmed over 10 pages of comments and only missed 1 complete day. A little crazy, but in a nice way!
Happy Birthday, @Scott6255.
I got my new Garmin Forerunner 235 in the mail today!!!! Excited to get it up and running....the watch and myself. LOL Is it horrible that I used downloading the user manual and looking it over as one of my excuses for not running tonight?!
The other excuse was probably better...I ran around the gym at daycare with eleven 4 and 5 year olds chasing me around. I thought I was doing good, but, after I got back to the room, I got a charlie horse in my left calf and it keeps trying to come back when I'm walking. It is in the calf that I tore the muscle in a few years back, so I'm a little concerned that I might have done something to it. Hopefully, it'll be back to normal tomorrow.9 -
Happy birthday @Scott6255 ! I feel like you are my climate brother, we are both tropical plants!
10k on trails for me today, the weather was absolutely beautiful but chilly. Saw three very fat deer, hopefully they are eating all the acorns for winter.
There's a cross country series in Jan and Feb which has races at two of the parks we usually run. I'm thinking we might sign up for it but I'm concerned about losing my money - two of the parks were completely flooded last February. I mean flooded flooded, not just trail runner flooded, police would not allow anybody in the area because the parking lot had become a navigable waterway, permanent structures washed away. But the series is super cheap ($60 for four races) so will probably take the plunge anyway.7 -
@Scott6255, Happy Birthday!!!1

I did the same as last night. I came home, changed, ate, had some Nuun caffeine, then went for my run. I had a tempo workout with 400m x 6 at 10: 00-minute mile pace. By number 6 I was tired! I got nothing else. LOL4 -

12.2: 4.5 @ 9:10/M (4.5) Easy Run

8.5 of 120.5 complete.
Was supposed to do some speed work but I’m getting a lot of discomfort on my right hip bone that extends up my side, especially when I lean or twist left. I can’t massage it our stretch it out so I ran an easy run today. Could a tight IT band give me pain above my hip bone? I feel it’s inflamed and it feels like little knots around my hip bone. Weight doesn’t bother it but it stiffens up even after a few minutes of sitting.
Could be IT band. But I'd focus on the TFL and medial glute. Maybe even massage out/stretch the psoas too.
Thanks for the tip. I've tried self-massage since my massage therapist couldn't really pin point anything that was troublesome to his touch with no luck. It seems to flare up more around my time of the month when I look back at my running app "notes". I still get a lot of pain around the front part of the pelvic bone and when I lean to the lift, in the motion resembling the start of a cart wheel. It hurts much worse AFTER my run than during.1 -
12.2: 4.5 @ 9:10/M (4.5) Easy Run
12.3: 4.0 @ 9:05/M (8.5) Easy Run
12.5: 4.5 @ 9:19/M (13) Easy Run
Still dealing with some pain around my right hip and some inflammation I can feel with my bare hands. I still can't massage it out or stretch it out. Will try some ice tonight before I go to sleep. Pain is much worse after I run and then again after I stand after sitting for a bit. I haven't gone to the DR at all this year, so I'm trying to wait until Jan 1st in case it is an "issue", I'll be working towards 2019's deductible.2 -
Happy Birthday @Scott6255 !0

So, remember the issues that I had with my back last month? Well despite not changing laundry detergents or anything- it has not come back. Which is great but confusing news.8

1206-5.1k total-16.3k, goal-60k
Early run on business trip before the gazillion things to do started out. I'm in a not very big town just 50km from Myanmar, and the sun doesn't come up until nearly 8am. It was pitch dark most of the way, and at 7am suddenly all the streetlights switched off.
Luckily the roads were empty enough to feel safe and my memory told me it was well paved. So I ran around pretty much blind for a few km, until I was rewarded with an awesome view at the finish.

December goal. Yeah. Move.

@Scott6255 Happy Birthday
this is a bit late, but @skippygirlsmom - a story. FOM (friend of mine) dropped out of high school, then started taking classes at the local community college. Before graduating with his associate degree, he transferred to a Baptist university. He finished all but the 2 required Old and New Testament classes which were known to be "grade busters" as the Profs took great glee in flunking people. Prior to graduating, he received his acceptance letter to medical school, so he never finished getting his BS and just went off to medical school....he finished that and is now a surgeon. So the VERY first degree he got was a doctorate. tldr: in the end, it doesn't matter how she gets there, Skip will succeed.
Upcoming races:
January 4, 2019 Hilo to Volcano Ultra 50k Relay. In memory of @keeprunningfatboy
Ticker is my goal for 2018 and (obviously deficient) progress to date:

Happy Birthday @Scott6255
Finally went out for my first run of the month yesterday and I'm annoyed because I'm pretty sure that I managed to pause my fitbit and lost probably around 400m worth of the run. And damnit I'm not running that far, I need that distance! Anyway the puppy was behaving himself and so was a joy to run with (unlike last time when he just kept pulling all the time) which was definitely helpful as it was drizzling so I didn't have my headphones on. Pretty sure I ran 90% of the distance which is a huge achievement for me, I did a similar route about a month ago and ran only about 50% of it, so definite winning.
Was frustrating though, as I felt like I had enough puff in my lungs to have gone for longer, but my legs were starting to hurt which is why I finished the run when I did.
5/12: 4.04km
