Short answer - Do what your doctor says.
Longer answer - Start slow (if your doctor approves) and build slowly. Do not "push" yourself as you have some very real injuries that will need working through. Pushing hard now could make those worse and end your chances to run. Build slow and listen to your doctor and your body.5 -

Okay i can do that. Lol i can be impatient sometimes bit i find pain is a very real motivator not to be foolish. And at least im finally done with PT and off any pain meds3 -
Happy belated @shanaber and @Scott6255 !
5 Frosty miles this morning at 28F. Didn't really feel like it was that cold once I got going but had frost on my hat when I got back to the start, lol. Doing well on lifting every other and running every other at this point, and I think that as daylight gets earlier it will be better.
On another note, one of the inmates at my jail mentioned to me at medication call, "So you work out in the mornings at the local wellness center..." Good thing I live a half hour away and have an alternate gym membership at the local Y in the city I live in. Will still drop in on random days for personal trainer but running/lifting in the town I work in is definitely out for now.7 -

I use to run in high school. Havent ran in 10 years. That was also 107 pounds ago too.
So I want to start running. But i was in a car accident 3 months ago and its taken about that long for my to mostly heal my back up. Still is a little messed up but mostly better.
Also i have a hip injury from 9 years ago that gets aggravated when i walk more than a few miles and i dont know how its going to react when i do start to run
I'm waiting for my doctor to give me the go ahead.
Anyways for now im just walking as much as i can. Sometimes that 4000 steps and sometimes its 13000 steps and everythimg in between.
A question i do have for you guys. Since i use to be a runner. When i get the go ahead to start running should i start from thr beginning or should i push myself to do more?
What @PastorVincent said.
I've come back from injury several times. It can be hard to adjust to simply not being able to do what you remember doing, or being beat after running much less than a distance you remember running easily. If you're going to make a mistake, make it on the side of not doing as much as you can, not on the side of doing too much. There will be less couch time that way. Or so my experience says.3 -
@rheddmobile I say go for it. Even if you only get to run a couple of the races, it's still not a horrible price per race.1

Unplanned rest day check in:
The plan was to run about 6 miles with 4 to 6 pick-ups. I had congratulated myself for getting all my household administrative stuff done, and was at the point of putting on my running clothes to go to one of two group run locations. I hadn't yet decided which . . .
. . . and my computer displayed a screen saying Windows found a problem and it had to restart. Right when I was about to log the last piece of dinner in MFP. So I wait for it to restart, and it hangs on the Dell logo. Power down, power up. No hard drive detected, click to continue. Then a screen, click to start diagnostics . . . except the mouse stopped working and it powered down after a few seconds.
So this was just before 5, and I made the executive decision that addressing this issue was more important than running 6 miles today. Called Dell support. Spent almost an hour on the phone, went through several iterations of diagnostics. The verdict is that my SSHD died. Ship it back to Dell for replacement under warranty. Spend some more time getting a couple boxes and packing it; then the shipping label arrives in the email. Look at things, and see that there is a FedEx location reasonably close that doesn't close till 10. Leave my house at 7, get to FedEx, send it off, come home. Set about recovering what I can for use on my backup Linux computer.
My most frequently used data files were stored on iCloud drive. I can get there through a browser under Linux, but transferring files is a one at a time thing. So I got a handful of frequently used files copied to DropBox, where they would have been all along if I hadn't been concerned about the space limits of DropBox.
And now I'm getting used to doing all the work in Linux that I got used to doing in Win10 with that awesome fast SSHD. Back to the electromechanical storage, but at least I don't have the Windows reboot BS in the middle of working.
I'm debating whether to run tomorrow on my scheduled rest day or not. I'm supposed to pace 20 miles Saturday morning, and it would be nice to have a rest day on Friday before that.
You would think that since I'm retired, I'm an empty nester, and my only daughter has her act together that Life Happens stuff shouldn't disrupt my running schedule. But Life tends to Happen in unanticipated ways.7 -
I’m new, just started running this week... other than high school when they forced me to run a mile once a week or fail gym! And high school was 18 years ago so... very very new! 😂 My goal is going to be 30 miles of running this month and another 30 miles at the least of walking (I finally got my walking speed up to 4mph and I don’t want to lose too much speed there by not keeping at it).
12/1 (3.5mi - run)
12/2 (2.2mi - walk)
12/3 (3mi - run)
12/4 (1.9mi - walk)
12/5 (X- 💃🏼 DDR 💃🏼 -X)
12/6 (3mi - run) (.7mi walk)
Run total: 9.5mi/30mi
Walk total: 4.8mi/30mi
I can already see I need to pick it up on the walking! I normally walk about 7-9 miles at a go but it’s super cold out and walking just doesn’t keep my face from freezing, even at speed.8 -

If that inmate is going to be released on parole, make sure you speak to the inmate's supervising parole officer about this.4 -

@Caseyloupuckett Good to hear! Being impatient and pushing hard may be how you got the injuries in the first place.
Now you're starting over, I recommend Couch to 5K. Zen Labs do a great C25K app.
Do a session 3 times per week - no more. Your muscles, tendons, and bones get stronger on the rest days.2 -
My December goal is 40 miles.... I work a lot of hours, so I have to run early morning, late nights and weekends. Already got 13.1 miles running the San Antonio Rock N Roll (Half) Marathon on Dec 2nd. I have two 5K's planned this month and some casual group runs at 4-6 miles each... Y'all add me as a friend if you'd like.3
-
Goals for December: 200 km (125 miles) of biking and 30 km (18.5 miles) of running.
12/04: bike 30 km (18.5 miles)
12/05: bike 20 km (12 miles) + run 6 km (3.6 miles) in 37 mins
12/06: bike 30 km (18.5 miles)
Total so far: 80 km (49 miles) of biking and 6 km (3.6 miles) of running. Hope for some running with hubs at the weekend. Keep your fingers crossed we can synchronize!4 -

Haha no i got the injuries because others were impatient. I was in a car accident were i was sitting at a stop light for my back and the hip injury came about when a guy rams a cart that you carry pots and pans on in a restaurant into me.
I may be impatient but I'm not reckless lol5 -
12/2: 3 mi
12/6: 1.55 mi
4.55/20 miles complete
Just a little over a mile and a half after work last night. It is supposed to rain and be cold all weekend, so I am expecting some ice, which is not the norm here in Ga, so we’ll see how it impacts my runs. Ideally, I’d like to get in 3-4 each day.8 -

No run yesterday, was planning to go to a drive-through Christmas lights show, but traffic was a big snarl, so we stayed in and baked cookies instead. Pretty sure that counts as running.11
-
@PastorVincent HAHAHAHA They really do need to add a "love" and "laughter" button to this thread. If baking cookies don't count as running, it should.2

1/12-5.5
2/12-rest
3/12-4.1
4/12-8.5
5/12-rest
6/12-Cross training (Ript in 30 level 1)
7/12- 6.6
Total - 24.7/100 Miles
Was pouring with rain on todays run, there is something really quite nice though about running in the rain though8 -
12/1 = sick
12/2 = sick
12/3 = sick / 3 miles
12/4 = 10 miles
12/5 = 3 miles
12/6 = 3 miles
12/7 = thunderstorms
Normally, I like running in the rain. However, the temps were in the 40s and just recovered from a 2 week death-like respiratory illness. I also have a 1/2 marathon next weekend. I can’t run it with pneumonia.
It doesn’t help that I read this horror news story before going to bed last night: https://www.health.com/heart-failure/man-coughs-up-lung
My sensible brain prevailed over my runners brain this morning. I stayed in my warm bed drinking coffee and snuggling with my puppy instead. I only work a 1/2 day tomorrow so I can make up the run Saturday afternoon.
December goal miles = 150 / 19 miles to date
Upcoming Races:
12/15 = Stars at Night Half
1/26/19 = Miami Tropical 5K
1/27/19 = Miami Marathon
3/10/19 = ZOOMA half
5/4/19 = Wisconsin Marathon (mittens challenge part 1)
5/5/19 = Kalamazoo Marathon (mittens challenge part 2)11 -

@PastorVincent Well, you “ran” to the store to get cookie ingredients. You “ran” your mixer to mix the dough. You “ran” your timer to make sure the cookies didn’t burn. See, it does count!7 -
Happy belated @shanaber and @Scott6255 !
i did 3 last night. a really easy comfy pace. i really wish i could take the puppies with me but hermie the westie thinks running and leashes are dumb. i could see him doing agility. and grizzly is to young. grizzly could totally use the exercise.
redid math. old girl is a year younger than i thought. she is tenish instead of 12ish.
i think speed demon is worn up from the puppies. i'll try to get her out for a run soon. she has ended up being the puppy sitter. old girl is too tired to deal with the insanity of the puppies.
dog photos below
look at the trauma in speed demon's face
hermie likes snuggling and if he is very still, old girl will tolerate it
i can haz spatula? (had spatula in my empty hand full of pancake batter)
these two are very tolerant. speed demon is all scratched up from puppy claws. the little puppy think old girl's tail is a toy-it's so fluffy11 -

did you wear your garmin whilst baking cookies and is it on Strava? If not, it does not count.6 -
@mbaker566 please stop. Or tell me that you have close-up pictures of centipedes or millipedes behind that spoiler tag and then I won't click on it (I'm okay with other creepy crawlies, and gory pictures with blood in. Not so keen on pink fluffy sickly sweet stuff)
I am totally in love with Grizzly. I am clawing at my computer screen just to get at it . And the others too. I love the expressions on Speed Demons face - tells it all!!1 -

Actually, I did wear my Garmin, and it does track my steps/etc and pushed it up to Garmin Connect, Apple Health and MyFitnessPal4
