No run today, have a fancy-pants dinner to go to for work. Yay.3

10 km Manzer Ave climb. Chilly -14C with a 20km/hr wind. One of those temps where you are between clothing sets, next garment combination would be to warm, the one you are wearing is a little chilly. The good part was that it was a blue sky day so running outside under the big sunbeam is always so good for the heart, mind and soul.

December Running Totals (miles)
12/1 – 18.15 partly paced run
12/2 – 8.24 easy
12/3 – rest day
12/4 – 6.51 easy with a few fartleks
12/5 – 6.31 easy
12/6 – Life Happens
12/7 – scheduled rest day
12/8 – 12.28 paced run
December running total to date – 51.49
Nominal December mileage goal: 160 miles
Real Goals: Recover from the strained hamstring. Work back to running faster only as the hamstring allows. Run Freezeroo #1 as allowed by my physical condition on race day, with a blind eye toward age group standings. Have a solid base of 40 miles per week by the end of December to start Boston training.
Today's notes – Decided to honor my scheduled rest day yesterday, because I was on tap to pace 20 miles this morning and that would put my week around 40 miles total. Let's try not to overdo things.
This morning there was light snow, which had coated my driveway overnight. No time to shovel when I'm headed for an early long run, so I drive over it, and wonder why the heck am I driving somewhere in this weather to run? I could run from home and not have to brush off the car when I'm done.
The weather was better at the lake shore. There's just something about Durand Eastman Beach that reminds me to take a pre-run picture:
It was warmer than forecast at 23° F (-5° C), but I was cold waiting around to start running. There were no takers for a pace of 8:00 or 8:30 per mile, so I ran solo. (Didn't pay much attention to pace, but still managed to average 7:55. Close enough.) Conditions were mixed. Sidewalks were snow coated. Some roads were snow coated with slick tire tracks, some were clear, some were clear-ish with snow coated shoulders. It was runnable, and pleasant weather, but a bit more effort than running the same pace on clear pavement.
There is a traditional selfie spot overlooking the lake. It was early today, only about 1.5 miles into the route. I missed the turn and came back, so I ran about 200m extra to get there. Because it was so early, that let some slower groups catch up to me. In addition to my own selfie, I got a shot of the 9:30 pace group. The 9:00 pace group declined to pause for a picture.
I thought about bailing at 12 miles. Off and on, my ankle griped a bit at me. Along about 8 miles, I saw a sign:
Figuratively speaking, I've spent way too much time there.
I remembered that when it was hard to start after the first 12 mile loop, and decided to bail on the 2+2+4 mile routes that finished the 20. I have some family in town on an unknown schedule, and I'd like to be in good shape to see them whenever the schedule allows. So 12 miels was it for today. What the heck, it's the off season.
And with only having run 12 miles today, I can pretty much run however far I want to tomorrow.

Okay, running in the afternoon is weird. I am most definitely a butt-crack-of-dawn running fan. This afternoon, my body was like - What are you doing? It 2 o’clock. It not time for running right now!
I’m running a NIGHTTIME half next Saturday. My body is not going to know what to do.
December goal miles = 150 / 30 miles to date

That first post isn’t joking about how fast this thread moves! So many runners even in this cold season (northern hemisphere anyhow). I only saw one other person out running today and 3 people walking dogs. All the sane people were hiding in the warm. 🤣

11.0/38.0 miles for the month
I used to walk on the treadmills at the gym between classes and got dumped off the back of one when I had a sudden sneezing fit. I thought I hit the shut down button, but obviously not! I managed to keep my feet under me, but between that and the doubled over sneezing I garnered way more attention than I liked! Now I pretend I didn’t see it if someone has a mishap, but they are okay.

Aw love it that you are also a bug saver! We get mostly spiders and scorpions except when it turns cold we have moths and lady beetles. I put them all outside. The beetles i have to bait with honey.
Maybe the weta is a sign of good fortune! I can see that it looks similar to a spider in its front legs.

Some other creatures appreciate it less than bugs: This summer we had a student staying with us for two month at work, who had never seen geckos before, but found them really cool. When one wandered inside, she wanted to help it by carrying it outside - and ended up holding its twitching tail, while the rest of the poor reptile scurried away. You should have seen her face I assumed everyone knows that geckos will drop their tails to escape danger, bug apparently not.

@amirahdaboss Sorry about your cold! I didn't escape the summer-to-fall transition cold, at least you were lucky back then. Get well soon!
@eleanorhawkins I've done the 60min Fitnessblender Upper Body Tabata video tonight that you recommended. Evil! But in a good way
@7lenny7 Sorry your recovery is going slower than you hoped. I'll keep my fingers crossed that you'll be running the trails again soon! And you are out of the boot
@MegaMooseEsq There is a website about starting to run with a dog, maybe it has some good advice for you and Iggy - http://www.poochto5k.com/training-programs
@PastorVincent If you are looking for the original creator of the "inexpensive hobby" comic, I found this version, which is at least 5 years old has a name (but the original website doesn't seem to exist anymore).
Also, I have to ask: "drive-through Christmas lights show"?! Something like that exists?
@polskagirl01 Sounds like you had fun with the mud Did you get actual tea after the race? The last time I ran a winter race where they offered "tea", it turned out to be heated up sports drink. Which was a cool idea, but also kind of weird.8 -
Today tried the third (and last) new pair of shoes:
Hoka Hupana 2 .
I'm not sure what to make of them yet. They fit well, but after a couple of kilometres I started getting the impression that they were encouraging me to over-pronate. Something in the way the sole is rounded towards the inside.... Will have to watch it during the next couple of runs.
And I never posted about the second pair: Saucony Zealot ISO 2 (Mens)
I already owned the women's version 1 and 3 of this shoe. My current pair of version 3 is at 574km right now, so I wanted a replacement for the near future. Unfortunately, the shoe is discontinued I can't find any version of the women's shoe in my size anymore. I did score one of the last few ones of the men's model for a bargain price, so I was willing to give that a try.
They seem to be a bit wider at the heel, and more cushioned, although the second might just be because they are new. Still, once I laced them up a little tighter, they fit well enough, and were great. (I really love the Zealots! I don't know why Saucony isn't making them anymore *sniff*)
In other news, I just checked the weather forecast for tomorrow to see when I should do my long run. It seems between 10-13h the rain probability is only 67%, how awesome ^^ Of my last 10 runs, 5 were in medium-to-heavy rain, 4 in a light drizzle, and one was overcast but dry. I know we have a couple of people in this group who claim they love running in the rain. Sometimes I write nonsense like that too, but right now I wouldn't mind seeing the sun during my run, at least for half an our maybe?

I can’t believe I am telling this story. There is a treadmill mishap more embarrassing than falling off a treadmill. When I first started running, I bought some cheap sports bras from Walmart that zip up the front. Sweaty sports bras are a nightmare to get out of. I thought it was a smart purchase. NEVER buy cheap Walmart sports bras!!!!
I think some of you know where this is going. One mile into my huffing and puffing treadmill run attempt, the zipper broke. I was wearing a shirt but all the gentlemen (on the full row of 6pm, after-work, gym mirror facing treadmills) saw what happened. I tried to act casual and stop the treadmill while simultaneously speed walking to the bathrooms. At least they all waited until I walked out of the cardio room to bust out in laughter.
This is why Walmart and treadmills suck. I refuse to take part in either of these things for the rest of ever.21 -
I took a walk back in my neighbor's field today and used my new Garmin for the first time!!! I like it, even though I just used it for distance and calories burned. Walked 1.6 miles in 30 minutes. At least I got out of the house and did something. Hoping to get back into an exercise routine, of sorts, soon.10

Looks like there is a twitter account, and that image shows up 16th of January, 2014.
Good work. I think that probably is the original. I will try to keep it around and use that one instead of the ones that have the name removed.
Thanks!

The It's a Wonderful Run 5k tonight was an experience! The race is in Seneca Falls, NY, which was the inspiration for Bedford Falls in the movie It's a Wonderful Life. There were over 5000 runners on streets not really wide enough to accommodate that, especially when many people were walking. Despite the strongly worded email that went out beforehand telling walkers and strollers to line up WAY in back, and that everyone should line up by the appropriate pace flags, that of course did not happen. It's definitely a fun run type of event, with everyone dressed up as Santas, Christmas trees, reindeer, etc, so I don't think you can expect it to be a really serious event, but it was really frustrating to try to navigate through the walkers.
Despite that, the spirit of the race was fun and there were a lot of people out in their yards with fire pits going and some passing out some real holiday cheer in the form of various alcoholic drinks. I had a little shot of Fireball at about mile 2 that really boosted my performance and cleared the lungs. By that time, there was a little more room to navigate so I picked up the pace quite a bit in that last mile. It was my slowest 5k in a couple of years but I had fun and felt good in that last mile. Given I was sick much of the week and I haven't done any races or speedwork for over a month, it was nice to feel like I wanted to run fast(er) again.16 -

@Orphia Haha! No, this was at my highest weight though. My ta-tas were much bigger then. I was mortified at the time. It took me 3 months to gather the courage to step back into the gym. LOL

Hey all. Well I'm in a funk. Post race funk? But it's been 3 weeks...
So in the two weeks after the race I managed 3 runs, a couple of 8ks and a 5k. And since the 1st I've been running everyday, I managed to get back up to an 8k run, but since then my mojo has just departed. It's weird. The last couple of days I found it hard for scheduling reasons - had to get something in because hubby was leaving for a tournament and had to get in before he left.
Blah just venting. Hopefully tomorrow when I get out I'll be better, but I just feel annoyed and almost can't be bothered. This is so much easier when working toward something! Sadly my next race isn't till July. Grrr16 -

Hi everyone, I'm a million pages behind but I'm home, I survived, I loved it and I love you all. But I don't think I'll be walking much tomorrow lol. Photos once someone tells me how to do that spoiler thingy so I don't blow up everyone's phones :-)

Spoiler tags are the word "spoiler" in square brackets to start, then your images, then "/spoiler" in square brackets to finish. So this:
[ spoiler][ img]https://content.active.com/Assets/Active.com+Content+Site+Digital+Assets/Running/580/meme-14.gif[/img]
turns into this if you remove the spaces after the "["s
Can't wait to see the photos

Oh geez, this was the first thing I saw when I logged on here this morning. That is a big bug!
It stormed ALL DAY yesterday, so I broke out my 10 year old Turbo Jam dvd to mix things up. Rain is clearing out this morning, so I am hoping to get in a run.

@_nikkiwolf_ thanks! Let's see if this workshttps://ibb.co/6bQqdMRWhen I signed myself up and it asked what time I intended doing I worked out what 8 minutes per km would be as I was pretty sure I could drag myself that speed (though I even had my doubts about that at some points in training!) so put myself down for 2 hours 48 minutes.

I felt great until kilometre 13 or so, saw some funny things, had a few giggles, saw my husband and daughter on a corner..... kilometres 14 to 17 were hard going, my knee started to feel sore and there were a few "wtf am I doing this for" thoughts. Then we turned back towards the city centre and I realised there were only 4km to go and picked up. Passed a few people who had run out of gas, munched on a few jelly babies and got back in the game. I passed the 20km marker at 2 hours 22 and got it in my crazy head I should try to finish in under 2 and a half hours. Missed it by 19 seconds, dammit! My legs will tell me all about why that was a really stupid idea tomorrow no doubt, but for today I'm happy! Average pace according to my app was 7 minutes per kilometre. I'll take it!
For now I'm pretty much decided I'm doing another one on March 24th. Hopefully my legs and knees will agree after a few days rest and a the rest of December in easy run/recovery mode.
ETA not quite how I wanted to photos to work, lol still learning!19 -

Yes, we have them all over the USA. At least in the several states I have lived in we have them. Often they are set to music, sometimes they are just displays, sometimes a mix. We have not been to this one yet so not sure what we are in for yet.
We have one by my house the local running group takes an unofficial run thru every year. I go thru it now and then.
It's free but they accept donations for the macc fund. (Candy cane lane, west allis, wi)
There are bigger ones. This is one the neighborhood decided to do to raise money for a good cause. So people looking for homes have to decide if they are willing to make the commitment if they want one in that neighborhood0 -

@ContraryMaryMary Well that is one big bug! No worries about that one getting in your ear while you sleep!
@Avidkeo i think we all lose motivation from time to time. I know i do. There's nothing wrong with a break, and when this funky no-wanna-run mood hits, all you can do is embrace it hoping its the result of a subconscious need. Go for walks, swim, have a bike ride or try to anything until it passes.
Worst thing for me is having a great run and expecting all of them to be great. Yet in reality, 1 in 20+ are great runs.
I'm currently trying to get over the fear of running. I'm afraid if i run, it'll hurt again. So no run, no hurt. But then I'm not training like i want too. And I think I'm just waiting for this year to be over so i can magically start anew.
Good luck. Do some soul searching. Maybe you can figure out the where the wall is and plot to climb it. If you figure it out, please share because we all hit this from time to time and it'd be nice to have some insight how to manage it.
Think of weta zombies? You must run.4 -
