What nobody tells you about losing weight

Saying excuse me to people in seemingly tight spaces, because I foresee accidentally mowing them down. But, they think I'm saying that THEY are too big. Geez, no. I would never do that.16

That you won’t recognise yourself in photos, I went on a works christmas do last week and when we shared photos at work I was like “Where’s Wally?”15

Perhaps it's just me, but my sense of balance took some getting used to. I was used to a particular force of movement to turn around, etc. etc. and I now find - even after a couple of years of maintenance - that I am still over estimating how much force I need. I'll move too much or too fast, and it is a bit strange.
I went through a phase of falling over all the time. It would happen when going down stairs quickly or starting off on a run for the train. I was starting to get worried. But it has completely settled down now and my balance had become better than it ever was.
I enjoy ice skating and used to go regularly, even when I was big. Due to one thing or another, I hadn't been for about three years, and in that time I had lost 90 pounds. I was surprised in the adjustments I had to make because of my new size. I mean it only makes sense when you think about it. I had very large breasts sticking out the front. And now I don't. That's bound to make a difference in your balance. It was just something I hadn't really thought about. LOL16 -
I had heard that it is expensive to replace a wardrobe but until I was faced with it I didn't realize HOW expensive it really could be. NOTHING fits (bras/undies, tank tops, pjs, pants, coats/jackets, snow pants, blouses, workout clothes, etc). Thank goodness I can drill new holes in my belts and my socks still fit! I don't have a decent thrift store close to me so I can get very little 2nd hand.19

Take a weekend road trip to a thrift store. I used to ship clothes home when I was on travel. Just an idea anyway.

When I was heavier and would overeat, I just felt stuffed. now when I do it, I get indigestion. Weird12

I'm 24 and I get this. I have a constant pain in my right shoulder that I can't attribute to anything other than my sleeping position.7 -
Stiff/heavy doors are sources of irregular embarrassment.
“Oh, the door’s stiff, I’ll just lean against it a bit”

*nothing happens*

I still remember the time I overate way too much at Christmas a year into maintenance & was writhing on the floor in pain. My sister said it was like I was having a food hangover.11 -

Right shoulder pain can be a symptom of a fatty liver.
That deserves a call to your doctor or nurse practitioner.
At least get more info on it!

Actually, there can be plenty of reasons aparts from fatty liver disease or sleeping position. Sometimes there can be muscle issues that need to be addressed by stretching, strength exercises, massage therapy, or the like. Yes, go get checked by a qualified medical professional!6 -
Losing weight is extremely beneficial to your physical health, but it isn't the answer to mental issues like anxiety, depression, and self image/low self esteem issues.
Some things do change for the better, mentally, like not feeling judged when you go out anywhere. But some of those issues will still persist.
Some people mention how they transformed mentally, going from a social hermit to an outgoing person or just being more confident in general after huge weight loss.
With over 400 days logged in and busting my *kitten* day in and day out by logging my calories and exercising, I'm at a point where I feel that I have to start a new journey. The journey to love myself. I'll still keep my routine of cutting so I can reach my goal weight of 170.
2018 was all about losing weight. 2019 is going to have the same, but also include the effort to try to socialize more, getting therapy, and try to break out of my shell.

Also some towns, cities have second hand clothing stores where you can exchange some of your clothing and get credit to use on clothes that have in smaller sizes. I have also found there are some online stores that have used clothing. So for things like tee shirts, pull on pants, active wear this has saved me some money. As they list all of the brand names they carry. So for just hanging out clothes, non work this has saved me nicely. I like the idea of doing a road trip as well if I know a certain town would have my size in better thrift stores.8 -

or the opposite
"right this door is heavy and stiff so I need to really yank it"
*open door and flings it nearly through the wall*

Over the past 2 days I've been kneeling on the floor predominantly as I've been painting furniture. Initially felt quite smug as I worked out some time ago how to combat my newly knobbly knees hurting while being on a hard surface.
That was until I failed to see a pair of scissors & knelt on the handles with my left one. Oh.My.Goodness!
Could barely hold back the tears & it was SO sore! I've a lovely lump 😂
In the past I'd just have been like "Found the scissors" 🤷♀️

I have enjoyed reading these. This is a great thread. I have gone up and down in my weight for years. A few years ago I got down to my lowest ever. I kept it for 2 years. The last 1.5 years I fell off and gained a lot of it back. I'm determined to get back to where I was and all your stories remind me of how good it felt. Hopefully in a few months I can go back to adding to these stories.18

Nobody really tells you of the "in between" time. When you've lost quite a bit but you are so big that nobody notices (20 lbs down in my case). And even some people remark that you've gained weight (remembering me from maybe 10 years ago!!).
Or the "in between" time when your fat clothes are too big and your normal size ones don't yet fit, but you don't feel like spending money on new clothes for just the 3 months it'll take to get there. ETA: yes I'll retouch the fat clothes. No decent thrift store where I live but cheap tailoring available.27 -

How wonderful it looks and feel to see your "love handles" shrinking and disappearing, right before your eyes! How excellent it looks and feels to see your once super huge stomach to "deflate" to the point you and no longer have a "spare tire" but have a "bike inner-tube" or something MUCH smaller than a "spare-tire" around your stomach instead. How though you've not arrived at the flat or flat-ish stomach YET, but knowing/rejoicing that in time (no matter how long and NOT putting a "time-limited" on your progess/goal), you will achieve an even smaller tummy--than now.21

I'm almost at goal, down 55 pounds, and I feel better about myself now. I'm proud that I've lost the weight the RIGHT way, thru eating well and exercise. It's been hard work, but I chose to do it. I know two people who had weight loss surgery and they've had so many health issues since then.18
-
Honestly? I had no idea I would feel this guilty for eating. I recently had bariatric surgery, and I am in constant fear of going back to my bad habits. It deters me majorly from eating.36

It’s been posted before but your rings will fall off. My wedding ring disappeared one day and was recently found, it’s crazy to see how big it is. Did I really have fat fingers? I mean I knew my butt was big but my fingers were fat too.
I thought my feet had gotten bigger with age nope it was the weight spreading them out.
I don’t have small features I had a fat face.
It’s all been said before but it’s new to me!25 -

Controversial here but: losing weight won't necessarily make you hot.
I got really thin in preparation for college and expected it would be like a weight loss commercial with people turning to look at me as I model-walked down the street. Spoiler: it didn't happen. Some people have the genetics (face and body) to be attractive at the appropriate weight, and some don't. Especially for women: no food or exercise choice is going to make your cup size grow.
It's all relative, and you'll feel your best at a weight where you are strong and healthy. Just do it for yourself, and don't expect the world to start revolving around you.45 -

Seconded. Suggestions:
1) Any dresses or skirts you love: may be worth getting them altered.
2) Anything else you have in good condition: try shopping it to a thrift store or on Poshmark.
3) For basics, online fast fashion is your friend. I picked up a several nice basic shirts on Amazon for $10 each.7 -

Great point and best of luck to you! You've already shown what you can achieve in one area, just need to apply it to another one.
Weight loss is exciting because it's something you can achieve by yourself. It won't change your personality or give you a social life. However, it can teach you how to apply the same determination you applied to getting healthy to those other aspects of your life that you can control.13 -

Yeah, weight loss products all want to make you think you'll look like a supermodel if you just lose all that extra weight. The truth: there are plus sized models. You will look better, but not necessarily model gorgeous or bikini-bound.6 -

It's called sex.
It's also called by about 2 billion other euphemisms. We all knew what was being said.16 -
Food and drinks become sooooo much more pleasurable and so, ummmmm, something you fully enjoy, with ZERO stress/fuss/muss/pressure or rush. Eating and drinking now is no longer an obsession/compulsion that/where you think about food 24X7X365. Words will not fully describe the JOY of eating to live instead of living to eat--it's so WONDERFUL to live this way. Now when I eat and drink stuff, it's no longer a gobbling/cramming/swallowing whole food like it's no tomorrow, it's a relaxing, pleasant, enjoyable, taking my time JOY and DELIGHT.
It will be that way one day for you as well, perhaps sooner or definitely later, it will happen to/for you too (if it isn't already like that for you now).19 -

This is a great one! It’s funny that I used to think that losing weight would mean I wouldn’t be able to enjoy eating my favorite foods any more. Now I feel like it’s the opposite. I actually fully savor and enjoy eating, both the healthy foods and the indulgences much more than I ever did before. Mindless eating and stress eating are really quite unpleasant. THAT’S the great truth that you need to know when you’re a stress eater.17
