Hi ladies. I lost an long post, so here's a shorter one. Things have been crazy at work, 10 hour days doing skills upload for the new students. We got about 4" of snow last night and it is beautiful. The neighbor who knows about DH came over as usual to do my snow removal. He always puts the paper on my porch too. Nice, nice guy.
Vicki: how much snow did you get?
Heather: I want to hire you for my personal chef!
Kylia: congratulations on the baby doing so much better! What a blessing
Well I have forgotten most of the other things to tell you about so I'll just sign off. Take care, Meg from the Omaha winter wonderland.3 -
You were all sitting on my shoulders yesterday when I stopped at a gas station on the way back from Little Rock. A lady who could have been any of us in age was just trying to enter the bathroom as I was leaving. She was using a walker, and moving slowly, so I offered to help. The look of relief on her husband's face was simply stark, as he asked me three times if I was sure. I reassured him, got her where she needed to go, helped her sit, as it was obviously painful, and then helped her up when she was done. She noticed my Girl Scout scarf and pin, and told me her stories of being a Brownie troop mom and a Girl scout troop mom through the stall door. As I got her out the bathroom door and back to her husband, she told me that she really appreciated the fact that I saw her, that she wasn't invisible, as most people treated her that way. I didn't cry, but it took some effort not to. I told her that I hoped someone would do the same for me, and she hoped for me that it never had to be a necessity. It will stay with me, that encounter. A few minutes of my life, no more. It staggered me in more ways than one.
@LisaInAR, that’s so touching. What a blessing you were to her and her husband.
@OregonMother, Felicia, what a great photo! Looks like you had a blast. Hope the stings ease up soon.
@fanncy0626, Mary, great photos!
@cityjaneLondon, Heather, nice calorie burn!!
@bwcetc, Beth, here's a recipe for a Kale Apple Salad that is amazing. I'm not a fan of kale, but it was so good. Lasts about 2 days if you have leftovers.
Went out today to get some office supplies and an office chair for my new home office. DH found a chair for $80 off. It’s just like the one he has in his den and he loves it. He’s too tired to put it together tonight but promised me he would tomorrow.
After church tomorrow, I’m going to a bridal shower for a friend at church who is getting married for the first time at age 50+. We’re all so happy for her. He’s a widower, same age, and has children.
Hope you all have a great weekend!

Lisa: Bless you! You truly made a difference in that woman's life.
Kate UK: Sorry for your loss. You were a good friend to her and I'm sure she appreciated it.
Mary: What wonderful photos.
Barrie: It's great that you are back to full enjoyment of your line dancing. Long may it continue.
@megblair1 We've all done that. I repeatedly copy now as I go so,that if I lose a post it's only a little of it.
Heather UK: I also exercise like a crazy woman. I don't think I would do as well on keeping the weight off if I didn't do it.
It's after midnight, so I'm off to bed.
💓 Have a wonderful weekend 💓

Vince just told me that the other night he woke up in the middle of the night with his stomach really hurting and he was sweating profusely. He got up, took some Pepto Bismol, went to the bathroom and then went back to bed thinking that if he continued to feel bad, he’d wake me up to take him to the hospital. Well, he laid down and started feeling better. What caused this? No idea.
Gallbladder?
Kidney Stone?
Menopause?
All three have provided me with similar symptoms.

Or gas. Believe me2 -
Add me to the list of people who exercise in the morning. I lay out my dog walking clothes in the bathroom before I go to bed so I change into them immediately after the toilet and teeth brushing. The dogs know that we go out as soon as I exit the bathroom. We walk for about 30 minutes then come home for breakfast and go out again right after we eat. My line dance classes are at 9 AM so after the walk on dance days, I shower immediately and get ready to dance. In the afternoons, I walk the dogs for a shorter time and ride my exercise bicycle. Having a routine makes sure that it gets done.
My mother was an adventurous cook and liked trying out exotic recipes. My father liked meals like a hamburger patty with green beans and a chocolate chip cookie. I was raised to eat the food that was put in front of me so I tried lots of different food. I traveled in Asia when I was in my 20's and did some adventurous eating then. Now I eat the same ordinary stuff all the time and love the routine and familiarity of it.

Boohoo! I'm missing the Fishermen Union of Warrenton, Oregon annual Crab festival!!!! This was last year's feast. Boohoo!
💗Rebecca2 -
Heather: I think you are doing a great job of self-care. You have managed to create a way to enjoy your food and balance the calories you take in with those that you burn via exercise. That takes dedication and determination, and you are succeeding brilliantly.
Barbara: I’ve switched my lettuce to romaine but DH still likes his head lettuce, so we always have both in the house. I find that I like romaine very much. I’m not sure why he isn’t on my lettuce bandwagon.
Lanette: Your chicken on salad greens sounds delicious.
Meg: It is always good when you stop in. It feels good to know how you’re doing.
Rebecca: It has been more than a few years since we went to the Crab Festival put on by the Fishermen Union from Warrenton. We had a lovely time there and came home with good memories.
Today DH installed our new dishwasher. I helped in little ways, but he was the brains and skill of the project. It is running right now. It will be thrilling to open a dishwasher after the cycle is done and find clean dishes, rather than dishes we have to wash again ourselves.

@auntiebk - I think my math was off. I was doing it in my head. I know better. The dresses were regularly priced 229 plus tax. The sale price is 151.49 including tax. All but one of the bridal party will be able to take advantage of the sale price.

Lanette I was thinking the same thing about Barbara always catching the little things. It always makes me feel special.
Tracey in Edmonton4 -
Bonnie ... thanks for the recipe. I'll give kale a try again.
Lanette ... I did indeed massage my kale!!
Barbie ... we get stuck in a rut here all the time. But I really do think that my husband and I will benefit from trying to expand our food repertoire.
We never did get to take a walk. Decided instead to use our machines in the basement. DH used the treadmill and I used the recumbent bike. Well, I used the recumbent bike and DH walked about 3 minutes until he said his back was hurting too much and then he sat in a chair beside me and watched me pedal ...
Then we inventoried the basement freezer. My decluttering guide challenges you to eat from the freezer and pantry in January and we'll give it a go. My basement freezer is loaded and we could easily eat out of it for quite some time. It's in addition to the kitchen freezer which is also full.
I signed up for a fresh produce delivery service. It's a company that buys "misfit" produce from organic farmers. Food that grocers won't take because it's not "perfect. The intent is to reduce food waste and support local farmers ... and sells it to people like me at 30-50% less than grocery store prices. We're going to see what it's like as we can cancel at anytime. Produce will be delivered every 2 weeks (I chose the delivery time) and we're only buying a 10-12 pound box since it's just the two of us. I'm hoping this will encourage more variety in our diet as I hate to throw out food.

Beth - I too need to eat out of my freezer. I do not have a huge freezer, but it is stuffed full. I need to take advantage of the time while the hubs is away to clean out what I can little by little, meal by meal. I know there is some really good green chili pork Verde in there. That might be dinner one night this week served over riced cauliflower. Oh shoot, I just remembered that I bought plenty of lettuce at the store to last all week. I’ll have to use the grilled chicken and grilled shrimp that is in there and save the pork Verde for later.

I love our routine. It's not a rut but freedom from "decision fatigue". Our freezer is full of multiples of our favorites so there is always something to eat. When Jake makes something in the slow cooker, we freeze some of it for a later meal. When he makes marinara sauce, he makes enough to freeze in canning jars for about 20 meals. I eat a lot of frozen vegetables so I don't worry about fresh stuff going bad. I make big batches of oatmeal in the slow cooker and then have some for many bedtime small meals.4
-
What a good idea to cook oatmeal in the slow cooker and have it on hand. I love steel cut oats and will cook a batch and wrap individual servings. Thanks Barbi.

Did a Total Body Strength Training DVD today. The plan for tomorrow is to do some Wii balance games.
M – regarding Vince feeling badly and then OK, if it was his gallbladder or a kidney stone, it would have continued to hurt, so it most likely wasn’t them. As for male menopause – I tend to doubt this as it was over so fast, he’s never had other symptoms (except buying the Genesis….lol). Whatever it was, I’m just glad it was over quickly. Update: just remembered that he had his gallbladder removed years ago.
Lisa – what a wonderful thing you did for that lady! Just another reason why I’m proud to call you my friend. How long has your son been with you? I totally understand how you feel
Felicia – looks like so much fun!
Mary – did you hike in those shoes or did you maybe change them for the picture?
Made the filling for the spinach cheese tarts I need to make tomorrow for Rummikub. Hope they’re OK until Tuesday. I need to make the meringue for a pavlova for Rummikub. Made Vince something that I found a recipe for but never heard of – a chocolate magic cake. Wonder if you need to serve it in the pan or not? Guess we shall find out.
Went to Petsmart earlier. Shadow needed food. I’d like to give some to Colby when we take her to him in Feb. If he runs out of food, since this is a prescription, it’s not like he can run to the store and buy some food.
Opened a container of applesauce and it was bad. I think I’ll take it back to Aldi, even if they don’t do anything.
Ordered the stroller/car seat for Denise. I didn’t realize that you could have them put the order aside for you to pay later. Bad thing was that I mistakenly ordered the wrong color. But I called them and in changing the order, I found out they were part of Bed, Bath and Beyond so the girl gave me the 20% off plus she changed the color. I didn’t think it would be much of a problem since I’d just placed the order. It’s not like they had taken it off the shelf or anything. I just didn’t want someone else to order it. Vince thought he was going to the shower (or at least up to DE). I really don’t care if he comes or not.
Got one more of the trees (Christmas) cleaned off and while I was at church Vince put two of them in boxes. Now I just need to vacuum the rug and we can put that away.
Katla – now that I think of it, Vince had his gallbladder removed a while ago! He hasn’t had any heart problems since the ablation. By now they would have found out if there was another bypass that was made. Vince likes the iceburg lettuce, but I give him the romaine and he eats it. Wish he’d like something like red lettuce, but there’s no way I could get that past him.
Lanette – right now Vince isn’t on any heart medication, not since his ablation which was a few years ago
Had church tonight and ushered – again! The other day I met a man in WalMart who said that he’d volunteer but he doesn’t want to do it every week. He didn’t realize that I also lectored. That’s probably because I haven’t been on the schedule for a Saturday in over a year.
Tracey – why can’t the one girl take advantage of the sale price?
I like to eat different foods all the time. You can give Vince the same things every two or three days and he’d be happy. He’s not happy when he has to try something new
How I wish I’d gotten the larger freezer when we purchased a new freezer!

My Chibani yogurt had a hole in the bottom! It didn't leak over everything when it was in the bag, but once I lifted it off the other yogurt, I saw the crack! Grrr! I will bring it back with the receipt and get credited!

What a lazy day today was, didn’t do much but study and go to church. Needed it, I guess. I didn’t realize that tonight was the first time we have been out to eat in 10 days, not like us at all. Maybe it was all of the traveling. More home cooking this coming week? More water? Hopefully, I’m getting back into the swing of things. Hope everyone has a lovely Sunday.

Sunday -- Today I ran my very first Half Marathon!!! 21.2 km.
Stats according to Strava
Distance: 21.30km
Elevation: 177m
Moving Time: 2:51:15
Elapsed Time: 2:53:17
Pace: 8:02/km
Calories:1,694
I had done four 10Ks in the past year, and so I figured I was ready. I signed up for the Cadbury Marathon and selected half marathon. Then I started training in earnest ... for about a week or so. December was an incredibly busy month and I wasn't able to get in as much training as I wanted, but I still tried to walk lots, run when I could, cycle when I could and climb stairs.
Fortunately I had 16 days off over the Christmas break and I was able to be active every day.
I ran a 12 km two weeks ago, and a 14.4 km last weekend. The 12 km went all right ... the 14.4 went all right while I was running, but I felt awful after. I'm actually glad that happened because it altered my strategy for the better.
This past week, I just walked in order to give myself rest.
Today, I was up at an absolutely unearthly hour of the morning (4 am), on the road by 5 am, and at the event by 5:45 am.
The marathon runners were set off at 6 am, and my event went at 6:30 am. My husband's event (5K) went at 8:45 am.
It was a perfect day ... blue sky and hardly any wind. The starting temp was 10C and it gradually increased to 18C by the end.
I followed my revised strategy which appeared to give me the energy to the end. Rather than running on an empty stomach the whole way, I was doing gatorade and water at the drink stations, and Gu Energy Chews along the way. I also ate about half an hour before the run. Fuel is good!
And then I settled into my pace and jogged.
My legs were cooperative until about 18 km when they decided they'd had enough of this nonsense, and that's when I started walking & jogging.
I finished in 02:51:11 which was faster than my estimate. I had guessed I'd be somewhere between 3 and 3.5 hours.
AVERAGE PACE: 08:06
OVERALL: 653 OF 694
FEMALE: 342 OF 377
F (50-54): 36 OF 39
A nice solid back-of-the-pack finish for my first half marathon!!
And my husband? He did his 5K in 46 minutes ... mostly jogging with a little walking. I was so proud of him.
We got our bags of chocolate and stuff from Cadbury, and great medals! We shared hot chips while watching the presentations for the top 3 of each event. Then we came home and slept for about 3 hours.
I'm quite stiff and sore, and I think my husband is too a bit. We'll see how I go walking briskly to the bus tomorrow!
But nevertheless, I'm thrilled to have done a half marathon!!

I'm trying to schedule exercise in early morning. I suppose the good thing is that I walk everywhere too, I walk the dog with DD every morning for about 40 - 45 minutes, walk to the paper shop to get dad his morning papers, walk Leah for 10 - 15 mins at dinner time so she can do her "business". Walk Leah again with DD in the afternoon for about 2 Hours and she gets another 10-15 min walk around 8pm. Goodness knows how heavy I'd be if I didn't do the walking.
Heather I was thinking that the meal out at etch. (?) was very expensive, but as you said, you look on it as an experience and it is not something you do regularly, hope you enjoy it.
Well if I want to get exercise planned in this morning, I need to log my food and get on with it I can soon talk myself out of it
Have a good Sunday

Katla I sneak the lighter colored halves of romaine into Joe's salad. He only gets iceberg when we have tacos
Tracey and Lanette thank you both for your kind and tactful "take" on my OCDetailedness
Beth I've been trying to use at least one thing from either freezer or pantry every day this month. It's starting to help . . I can now open the freezer without hearing Molly yell "oh no, not the closet, Fibber!" or having to dodge the bruising avalanche.
Michele "buying the Genesis" Which Genesis is that? Luxury sedan, concept truck, autogyro, kit aircraft or ???
Machka Bravissima! "Gu energy chews" now there's another food I had to Google. For runners, bikers, triathletes, nope not gonna need that!
Put off SWSY again but had a good time at dog group. Three people commented on Tumble's progress. Best was the after-class where leader invited Tumble to join circle sitting next to Ellie another reactive dog and 2 other dogs. All 4 sat (mostly) waiting their turns for leader to give them treats. Other than an initial growl Tumble behaved too! "This is real good stuff" one of the leaders commented and we were all smiles. A far cry from the fear-crazed Tumble of last March. Thanks be!

Thank you!
And yes, Gu energy chews and the other kind I bought but didn't need to get into, Clif Bloks, are a quick and easy way to get a few calories and some electrolytes for situations when you don't want to be eating food.
I downed a full packet of the Gu Chews which provided me with 160 calories, as well as 80 mg of sodium and 80 mg of potassium.
I've used them before during long bicycle rides and they sit well, which is important.

Wonderful, Machka! :drinker:
I could run the 5k with your husband as that's my pace!
Waiting for the grandchildren to arrive for a play date. No exercises this morning. Will have to watch the calories today!
Love Heather UK xxxxxxx5 -
Machka: Awesome effort. Not my scene, but I do admire your dedication.
We have an eating routine, but there is flexibility as we have a different roast each Sunday. We cook fresh most days, but often cook double and freeze the portions for days when we are pushed for time. I love to try out new recipes. I haven't changed the kind of food we eat as it's always leaned towards the healthy, but I have drastically reduced portion sizes, and gradually replaced less healthy options with better alternatives. Still have the odd blowout, though. 😂😂😂
I tend to fit my exercise in early, as I am a morning person. Mind you, I often have to walk in the evenings to hit my step goal, especially if I have been at Our Group meetings during the day.

Morning Ladies~
I am up , no need for an alarm my body clock gets me up...I am having my tea and then will get dressed and go feed DFIL, I ordered those cups for them they should be coming today and will bring them with me tomorrow..
taking Kitty down to visit a few friends down at the nursing home this afternoon, so this morning I guess I will be doing what little shopping I need to do..oh yes I have to start Jeans car and take garbage out for her too..word has gotten around the Atrium that I am a good helper, what have I gotten myself in to lol.. luckly it is easy stuff and not strenuous because I don't think I could handle that..
I didnt go over calories yesterday but gained a lb or so back but not worried that will come off , slow and steady I will go..
will check in later6 -
Good morning all! Happy Sunday! I had a wonderfully relaxing Saturday. I got up and got my shopping done. My weekly grocery shopping goes like this: 8am- Dollar General, 9:00am-Aldi, 10:00am-Meijer. I squeezed in a stop at JC Penney before Aldi and picked up a pair of "dress" yoga pants, and three tops for $15 (thank God for clearance racks, 50% off sales and coupons!). Finished my shopping and headed home. Unloaded and put things away, ate a good lunch, then turned on the tv while I cleaned house (during commercials) and made yogurt and soup. lol Tim walked in the kitchen while I was cooking and said "I thought you were going to relax this weekend." lol I was relaxed. It just feels good to do things when I want to do them. Today, I will prep my 1 lb veggie bags, and bake a couple of spaghetti squash for later this week. I also need to strain and store my yogurt. Other than that, I will sit and do some paper work and planning for daycare. Busy, but relaxing.
Machka- Yea, YOU! That is a good pace for a half marathon! And my buttons are bursting for your DH! A 5k! His doctors and physical therapists have GOT to be so pleased with his abilities after the accident!
Heather-etch. looks fantastic! I agree with your thoughts on eating out. It has to be an experience and something that you don't make for yourself at home. I have been to quite a few restaurants and while eating was kind of "Meh. I like mine better."
Barbara- Treats for Tumble! What a good pup!
Viv- So sorry to hear about your friend/neighbor! Sending hugs your way!
Michele-I think the stroller/carseat is a great gift for your grandbaby! It will be used daily and most likely for a year or more and enjoyed by both parents and baby! Enjoy the shower! Does she know if she is having a boy or girl yet?
Barbie- I would LOVE to get on a routine with my meals. Breakfast and lunch are pretty much the same every day for me (unless I run out of something), it is dinner that is a pain. I am cooking (usually) for Tim and Colin, as well as myself. They are very "meat and potato" -centric. I am making little changes in what and how much I offer; I guess that is the best I can do right now.
Beth- I had a daycare family that belonged to a CSA and would get a big box of produce each week. They always brought me things that they knew they wouldn't use. Good stuff, too! Brussel sprouts, cabbages, eggplant..Enjoy your boxes!
On a side note:-I keep a walking log for my daycare. It is a actually a folder that holds emergency info for the kids and I, but it also has a log that states the date, walk route/distance, and which kids are walking. Well, I added up the miles that we walked last year. We walked a little over 705 miles in 2018! We averaged about 15 miles a week! I am so thrilled with this! Children ages 2 1/2 years-4 years old, whose little legs resemble Marvin the Martian, put in this many miles! So proud of them!
Hope you all have a fantastic Sunday, doing whatever it is that makes you feel the best! Hugs to you all! ttfn xoxoxo KJ (Kelly)9
