WOW- it feels so good to know I am not alone. I literally thought i was the only one that just had to have my drink every night. I ENJOY drinking. Problem is that once i start it sucks to stop :-(. I have never been a sloppy or crazy drunk, but i am the type to do all my chores with a glass in hand and a few shots in between. I have been AF (what's it stand for anyways?! LOL) since Monday- Sunday for superbowl drank nearly an entire bottle of tequila on my own. My throat still feels tight from it! I plan on not drinking at all unless out for social settings and remind myself to STOP after one or two nice drinks. MODERATION has never been my strong suit. THANK YOU ALL FOR BEING SO CANDID7

This is where it all went downhill for me, when I started getting tipsy while cleaning the house, lol. It definitely makes it more enjoyable, but by the end of the evening I've had more drinks than I could count and started gaining weight and spending enormous amount of money on liquor and beer. Glad you've joined us in being more mindful!! It's a really positive feeling! There will be set backs but we'll be here for you4 -

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I started equating being tipsy with "ok now we rolling".... only to half way thru want to just go lay down, so then I had to PUSH myself to finish my chores to then crash in bed super early. I dont want to "waste" more time that way. I've worked so hard to take weight off only to slowly have it creep back up, waking up looking like a cabbage patch kid, face all swollen and totally "tired" from my mini binges.... not to mention brushing and doing mouth washes for long periods so I wouldnt smell like a liquor store when heading to bed... ugh, too much work.4 -
2/1: 3 drinks
2/2: AF
2/3: 1 drink
2/4: AF
2/5: AF
huge steps. I've had drinks basically every day for the last 3 years, and this is by far the driest stretch since that time. I feel fantastic, and my anxiety is better for sure...especially at night when i'm alone in my thoughts. The first 5 days in January i consumed over 2500 calories in Alcohol....this month, about 650.10 -

@BuffMom84 that sounds like a very good read with helpful information.
@mainelylisa oh gee sorry your January was so wet. Awesome job jumping back on with us. Peanuts huh? Crunchy and filling with nutritional value. Win win.
Welcome @Rh1aB1a and @gladys0919, nice to have you joining in.
Happy belated birthday @MonkeyMel21. Exercise equipment is always exciting......used or new. Enjoy.

I've been AF for about 2.5 weeks now and I can't remember ever being AF for this amount of time. It's been relatively easy but I've had a few moments where I've felt grumpy because I wanted a cocktail after a busy shift or jealous when others indulged during Super Bowl Sunday. Tomorrow my husband and I are both off and we will be going out to lunch and then to an event where I would normally have quite a few beers, temptation will be lurking for sure.
I've also been more motivated to start running again and I'm very excited about that, I kind of fell into a little slump during the holidays and I see myself finally coming out.9 -
Last night DH wanted to buy a bottle of wine ... long stressful day at work. But then he decided to go for a 2 week AF streak.
It was funny ... I suggested that instead of cooking the fish dinner I had planned (and thawed) that we should go to Fish City Grill and then order 1 glass of wine. We stuck with fish dinner at home without wine LOL
Feb 7 - AF again!8 -
@nvasquez41 congrats on your 2.5 week AF streak. Those are normal feelings your having, the being grumpy and yearning alcohol. It is a whole new re-set of our brains to get out of habit. See this is were the other motivation kicks in to replace the time spent drinking for time to do other things. Enjoy getting back to running.
@Lilylady3k your lucky to have a DH that is doing some dry time with you. Keep up the team work.3 -
2/1: 3 drinks
2/2: AF
2/3: 1 drink
2/4: AF
2/5: AF
2/6: 1 Beer.
Went out with friends and had a beer because everyone else ordered a drink, i was good with one. My desire to see my alcohol calories in my diary far outweigh the desire to drink at the moment...which is great! It's nice to not have a headache and be dehydrated in the morning! Apparently, when i don't drink i get up at 5:30 instead of 7, so now i'm a morning person!9 -
My husband went to the bar after work last night for five hours and came home wasted and with more beer. Usually in that situation I would get mad and have a few beers myself because I can't tolerate him when he's that drunk. But last night I saw how foolish he was acting and didn't feel like drinking at all. I just ignored him and eventually he passed out. He's hungover today yet still feels like drinking more whereas I'm glad I'm not hungover, groggy and grumpy.7

I had no alcohol yesterday, didn't even think twice about it. I was up bright and early this morning, ready for a work out! The scale was the highest it's been in 2 weeks but I know that most of it is water weight from my birthday so I am looking forward to that downward trend in the next few days. Hope everyone is having a good week!4

Day 4 for me AF...it's been a WHILE I've gone this long.... Looking forward to a sober weekend (HOPING). Trying to just wait until V day for a glass of two of wine...5

Reading your stories is so inspiring. I want to be AF and not just because I overdid it the day before. Here I sit at work, nobody knows, I function fine, but I drink anywhere from 3 - 6 beers a night. I am now getting to where the beer doesn't do it, so I finish the night with a mixed drink. I try to remind myself that it was only a couple years ago that I was wanting to quit drinking so much wine. I have accomplished that. I am proud of myself, and I know I will "drink less" as time progresses...…..I just wish it was easier.....
Yesterday I fell on the ice and hurt my knee, that was my excuse, along with the anticipation that work would be cancelled due to the ice storm. We did get to come in two hours later. That helped.
My struggle is I know the alcohol is what is causing me to be so unhealthy. I am 57 years old and obese. I have 4 grandchildren. I don't want to be crippled up because my weight is damaging my joints and muscles.
Your posts are very encouraging. Thank you for sharing your success and struggles.9 -

You are doing great just talking about it! Don't let up and dont beat yourself up about it. GOOD for you that you want to be in better health and make better choices, YOU CAN DO IT and you are NOT alone!! One day at a time!! I Find that once I dont drink for two days straight its easier to go another day and then another. Just start slowly, day by day! Proud of you!4 -

@buffmom84 I am happy for you that you made the right decision for yourself and not drink! Yea, no hangover!
I had a dry Jan and Feb besides for overdoing it on Super Bowl.... Felt horrible the next day! I hate that feeling anymore! I have so many more positives of not drinking. I have never gone this long without alcohol since the beginning of year since aREALLY long time!
Here is to 2019 for all of us!
@gladys0919 Awesome on AF!!👏💃👍6 -
@Fitness327wk thanks so much!! I look forward to the day I go an entire month like you did for Jan!!2

@Fitness327wk it was only that one day. Try not to be to hard on yourself. You will eventually find your motivating niche so you can have one or two and walk away before having too many.
Been there. Many times.
Also this is my longest dry streak too, since November of 2012. 💪3 -

Your story is so very familar to many of us on here. Remember we are about less alcohol what ever that means personally for you.

I had a frustrating exhausting work day with no energy left to work out and you know what I wanted starting around 4 (ok, more like noon, but that's 4 o'clock somewhere)?...
I wanted like 2 shots of whiskey (to start--muhahaha). But that wasn't gonna be an option. So I made a bitter-sweet mocktail and it put a little sunshine into my evening. I realize bitters have alcohol, but I only put a few shakes--all yum, zero buzz, zero hangover. Added club soda, lemon, a bourbon cherry with juice, and voila! It was my "treat" (along with homemade pizza). Didn't lose any weight today, but at this point, would take a high calorie AF day over a low calorie alcohol day--any day.
It's been a rocky road getting to this point, so those of you just starting to cut back--cut yourself some slack. Some can do 3 steps forward or more, but most of us are like Paula Abdul--2 steps forward, 1 step back...it's still forward in the long game.
TGIF and be kind to yourself this weekend!10 -
I realized something super early today when my alarm went off to go running.
I had plans to go out to lunch and then opening day of the Rodeo, both occasions where I would normally be drinking at. I automatically felt like I had to wake up early to get my workout in because if not I would be too drunk to do so later. It was almost like an epiphany when I realized " wait, I'm not going to be drinking....I can just work out later!".
Later on during my run I felt like my day was complete, like I was able to have a full afternoon doing fun stuff and was still sober afterwards to be productive.7 -

“Also so impressive that you’ve stuck to AF through these recent days. That is one thing I haven’t mastered yet, outright saying no thanks at social events when others are drinking. “
I messed up how to do a quote. Sorry!
This really resonated with me. I think this is a struggle for a lot of people, especially those of us who hang out with a drinking crowd. But, isn’t this what we tell our kids? To say no thanks if they are offered drugs or alcohol at a party? This challenge is a great opportunity to model behavior for our kids, and to truly be compassionate to the pressures they face in the exact same situation. Geez, peer pressure never ends, does it?6 -
"Oh wow...I thought I was the only person on earth trying to cut back".
This was the very first sentence I ever wrote when first posting on this thread back in 2018 in January.
For those of you that think your alone, your absolutely not.
Coming in here and sharing your wins or struggles will help release some of the tension or stress that may cause you to over drink.
One step at a time, one day at a time. Keep strong.8 -
I had success last night staying AF while my husband had a few beers! I slept so good last night and no groggyness or hangover this morning, and I stayed under my calorie goal!7
