One thought is to call the store where you bought your current shoes and explain the situation. You may find that they can provide a suggestion and ship them out to you.
Another idea is to use one of the several online shoe stores which offer free shipping and free returns. Buy several and keep what you like. Saucony offers this, as does runningwarehouse.com and zappos.com . Amazon has so many sellers that I don't know if you could count on that with them.4 -
Thanks @PastorVincent I did wonder about the drop. I have ordered them on Amazon before. I was just thinking about looking at other shoes but not really sure which ones compared.
That is going to be tough to do online. I would recommend just ordering another pair of these until you can get to a store to try others on. There is so much difference in shoes, feel and such that it is very rare I order online until I bought the pair in a store first.1 -
Okay so work computer went down and had to be replaced, which took several days. Just skimmed through 240 or so posts...
@samthepanda I wholeheartedly agree with all the advice that was given. As far as walking, when I did my half in October 2018 I walked quite a bit of it, and ran when I could. Other people were doing the walk run program. What made my day was the runner who had been ahead of me, doing a walk run program, and I sprinted(as much as we were able to) the last 1/4 to 1/2 mile to the finish line, laughing all the way. She told me after we stopped laughing that she was surprised she had been able to keep up.

Things have pretty much settled in to a training rhythm for me with every other Saturday being long run, followed by the Sunday recovery run or if working Saturday and Sunday are usually 5 milers before a 12 hour stretch in the Emergency room. Mondays 3-4 miles(shorter if I do intervals) then TRX class, Tuesday 6 miler, Wednesday 3-4 miles before a plyo/core circuit with the trainer, Thursday 6 miler and Friday 3-4 miles before circuit training (upper or lower depending on trainer's mood).
This week's runs have been spring/summer preview runs with the temps being in the upper 50's/lower 60's and the humidity in the 70-95% range. On the plus side, it has been really easy to dress for the weather, shorts and t-shirts all around. Consistency has been there in the distance, not necessarily the speed. This week was the first week with the new trainer on Wednesday and Thursday morning's 6 miler was not on tired legs, but my core was so worn that I was up nearly a mile/minute on pace. Continuing daily running and working towards the Issaqueena Experimental Forest Trail Marathon in Clemson, SC, on 3/30/2019.

ETA: @amymoreorless I find that on days I run I actually eat less that on days when I lift, weird but WTH. I still enjoy eating all the things, and I do mean all(cookies, cake, chicken strips, bacon(hint hint @7lenny7 )). But I am losing slowly as my deficit is performed more by the amount of exercise I get in than by the foods I don't eat. When I eat at deficit, my body screams when I work out.12 -

Getting in a little late, but I'm probably going to put in 40 miles +/- this month. Also, feel free to add me as a friend as well. Always looking for more people who run so I can look at their runs and think "...if that *kitten* can do that, I can, too." and motivate myself to get up before work and put in the miles.12

@kgirlhart - I will reorder the same shoes I am used to and like without worry but with new brands/models I like to try them on. I like the suggestions so far on ordering online trying and returning what you don't like but that can also be a pain. For what its worth Amazon also has free shipping/returns if you have Prime. I am looking to order a replacement pair of my current Altra's from REI because they are cheaper than Amazon but will be going to a running store today to try on a pair of Brooks I have been considering.
@StephSuter2508 - welcome and good luck with your return from injury! I don't know how long you have been out but don't rush your return to your previous pace and risk re-injury!
@rusonespresso - going on vacation is fine but it has to be a run inclusive vacation! Remember that for next time

@7lenny7 - thanks for the info on the Altra warranty. I have worn them for years and had no idea they had a great return/exchange policy. But then I never needed it either!
I just found out my favorite shoe company (Skora Running) that has had no product for over a year (yikes!) is finally going to have new shoes available later this month!6 -

One thing with Amazon is if you buy the shoes that are marked (as these were) "Prime Wardrobe" you can actually order them and try them on for free. Pay only if you keep them.
When ever you deal with Amazon, it is best to make sure you stick to things that are marked "Sold by Amazon" - saves a lot of trouble later. Or sold by the manufacturer directly via Amazon (Like Saucony does).

Long run Friday! I am heading out of town to visit some friends this weekend, so I decided to get this done before my 2 pm shift today instead of doing a 3 hour run and then hopping in the car tomorrow. Plus today is the last of our springtime-in-February days, and the temps were too good to pass up. This will likely be my last day running in shorts and a t-shirt for quite a while.
Used this run to explore a new neighborhood, tackle some sizable hills, and try a new gel. From my experience at the Marine Corps Marathon last fall, I realized that my marathon nutrition plan needs to have waaaay more sodium content. The gels I've always used just don't have enough. So I checked the gels we sell at my store and found that huma+ gels have 2x as much sodium as even Gu Roctane does; the + gels have 240mg sodium which is way more than any competitor I've seen. So I tried the chocolate raspberry and berries/pomegranate flavors today at 1 and 2 hours into my run and YUM. They went down really easy texture-wise, and the flavors were great, and I think the extra dose of sodium really did help. I usually just eat breakfast before a long run and then don't really do gels during a run unless I'm testing them out, and I think these will be my go-to for my spring races. I'll try them on another long run just to make sure they'll sit well, but as of today I'm pretty much sold!

Keep in mind shipping times will have a big impact on this. So if you get one pair and do not like, and ship it back and then get another... your easily several weeks into shoe shopping. If you order something you know will work, then you can take all the time you need to shop out your next pair. Just another thought.3 -

Interesting article, particularly about the short and long races close to each other. Interesting enough, my 5K PR was a night run after spending the day hiking about 10 miles off-trail through thick thorn bushes and along sandy creeks so soft that feet sunk in shin-deep at times. The next weekend, I PR'ed on the marathon distance. I must have just been in a good place.
My 3 races total less than some ultra distances and span across 3 weekends. I believe it is the rest in between that is going to either make or break each next race.5 -
I have a question about shoes. I have been wearing Saucony Ride 10s. These are the shoes they put me in when I went to the running store and had my gait analyzed. She suggested these, or some Mizuno shoes but I don't remember which model. The nearest running store is an hour away from me and it is pretty inconvenient to get over there. Is there a website or list somewhere that would tell me other shoes that compare to the Ride 10s? I think these are neutral shoes and I really don't know anything about "drop". I have ~380 miles on these and my feet are starting to feel tired and achy. I run on roads and sidewalks. I know I need to go to a running store, but I live in a little town in the middle of nowhere so I tend to do a lot of my shopping on Amazon. There are just so many different models of running shoe and I know what works for one might not work for someone else. I just wondered if there was someplace that I could compare similar shoes.
@kgirlhart I work in a running store, and I am personally a fan of the Ride and similar shoes. I'd say that parallel shoes would be: Mizuno Wave Rider (a bit firmer, runs 1/2 size small, 12mm drop), New Balance 880 (a bit more responsive, runs true to size, 10mm drop), Brooks Ghost (softer, cushier, true to size, higher arch, 10mm drop I think) and the Asics Cumulus (much firmer, snug/true to size, 10-12mm drop). Now all of these are a higher drop than the Ride which is 8mm but that's not a HUGE difference since you're going up rather than down. I went from the running in the Ride for years to the Wave Rider for a time and then to the 880. Now I rotate between all 3 and use the NB 880 as my long run/long race shoe.5 -
@kgirlhart I feel your pain, I'm 2hrs away from the nearest shoe fitting store and am. Currently going through the same issue. I've got the next model up from my current pair in the post on its way to me atm, waiting for them to arrive is painful. I admit if I was just an hour away, I'd be in that car and trying them on, but that's a difference in perspective, right now I'd love a shop only an hour away!

With the price of shoes I could not afford to do that, so I do not assume others could drop that kind of cash either. And no, I do not recommend credit cards.

What stinks is my Saucony Ride 10s have a lot of life left in them, but the more I run in my Altra Lone Peak 3.5 trail running shoes... the more I want to try their road shoes. The zero drop + wide toe box is a good combo for my feet.3

So, I was kind of despondent on Thursday. I did not do as well as I would have liked on my marathon. I gained some weight back this year ( although I am still much lighter than I used to be ). I have been battling insomnia this week and my 4 am insomnia run on Wednesday was a sweat fest because it was 78 degrees F and 95% humidity.... pre-summer. Ewwwww. I literally was about to give up on running.
Well last night, hell (AKA Texas) froze over! It is not pre-summer after all!!! Hooray!!! Frozen stuff fell on my head during my 30 degree F run this morning. I didn’t even mind the stingy ice pellet parts.
February Goal Miles = 120 / Miles to Date = 2418 -
Not sure if I should post, since I am concerned that I might not have a high score during the cold (and snow and ice...):
