Thanks to everyone that gave well-wishes for tomorrow's race (@7lenny7, @RunsOnEspresso, @mbaker566, @PastorVincent, @workaholic_nurse, @shanaber, and anyone I may have missed). I ran my final 3-mile run of taper this morning, and I've already been to the expo to pick up my race packet. So now all that's left to do is sit down and relax for the day in sunny Phoenix while feeding on carbs.

@PastorVincent I probably will end up ordering more Ride 10s on Amazon. I'm not sure when I'll get a chance to head over there again and I'm sure I'll need new shoes before then. I actually need new shoes now.

You can return anything to REI. My husband worked as an archaeologist when he was younger. He used to return boots that he wore for 2 weeks - a month out in the field. Return them by mail free of charge. REI would ship him new ones out to his job site... out in the middle of nowhere.3 -
I love challenges, especially running challenges. I do marathons and 5 and 10 ks. Is there a challenge going on this month that I can join?4

There are NO LAME runners! There are runners! Runners at any level are awesome. Sorry, I know I am new and maybe shouldn't say anything yet, but the ONLY "LAME" runners, are those that sit on the couch or don't try. You can run around the block and be a runner. I am a turtle compared to my daughter and that is okay. We have done marathons and 5 and 10 ks. I do a 7 minutes run:1 minute walk ratio, but I am still a runner. Okay, rant over, sorry about that. Anyways, it is the 8th of February, is it too late to set a goal, or how does this challenge work? It sounds pretty awesome.5

@gonnagetfitnow2014 yes, we do have a challenge this month. This month and EVERY month! And you're welcome to join.
Be sure to read the first post of this thread, as it explains how everything works here. Folks can join any time, even the last day of the month. Just declare your goal and check in from time to time to let us know how it's going, ask questions, answer questions, or join in on any conversations that might be going on at the moment. Fair warning, this is a VERY busy thread.

Never too late to set a goal for the month, runners of all levels here. As posted in the opening of this month's thread you can track however you wish. We are all here to support each other, be inspired and read the race reports. (except me, I just come here for the cookies BACON

Thanks for your input @MegaMooseEsq @amymoreorless and @shanaber . I'll have to look into REI. I have never ordered anything from them. I've heard of them but the nearest store to me is almost 2 hours away and I didn't even think about looking online. I do have Amazon prime so I use that a lot and I have bought more than one pair of shoes to try on, but usually when I do that they are casual shoes and not as expensive as running shoes. @kristinegift Thanks for that list. We do have a Hibbets Sports here but they do not carry Saucony and most of the people who work there don't really seem to be that into fitness so I don't know if they really know anything about running shoes. But I may go out there and see if they have any of those models that I could try on. I have ordered replacement Rides on Amazon, but I don't really like the idea of ordering shoes I've never tried on before. @Avidkeo I am glad there is a shoe store only an hour away. The next closest one is closer to 2 hours away.

So I tried the chocolate raspberry and berries/pomegranate flavors today at 1 and 2 hours into my run and YUM. They went down really easy texture-wise, and the flavors were great, and I think the extra dose of sodium really did help.
@kristinegift I am a fan of the Apple -Cinnamon ( tastes like apple pie ) and the Strawberry. Don't know if they have them in the + version with higher sodium.0 -

To give a bit more info I am menopausal, a bit overweight, busy mum, picky vegetarian. Very stressed, generally exercise helps. All advice welcome. Not giving up yet.
Update: the road closures are in place for 3 and a half hours, can still keep going after that but have to go on the path. There will still be race officials and volunteers around til the last person. This makes me feel better. No run as it was pouring (and my head was a mess) so I went to crossfit instead but will get out tomorrow (weather permitting).13 -

Another one of their street shoes is the "One", which I own but haven't run in yet. I found a pair on clearance for $45 so I was compelled to buy them.3 -

Took a week off. Vacation was whirl-wind. We went to Dallas and Nashville. Got home yesterday. Decided to walk the dog with DH instead of run. I was deadass tired. Went out today with a goal of 4-5 miles so figured 4.5 was perfect.6 -

i imagine it has to be because there is very little tread. very flat

I really like REI and have been shifting to them and away from Amazon for a lot of running stuff (I still use Prime for All The Other Things). They do pretty regular online sales, too, and especially for running it's good that you can actually use the stuff and still return it. A lot of clothes and shoes bought on Amazon can be returned but aren't supposed to be worn. I was able to return a pair of boots once that absolutely fell apart after two weeks but not having to worry about that is nice.2 -
@simcon1 - I forgot to mention to you a while back that there are a lot of really fun races in and around Seattle.
Some that I am aware of or have run are the Beat the Blerch HM in Carnation, The My Better Half Marathon around Valentine's Day, the Oiselle Tenacious Ten and Top Pot Doughnut Dash 5K, the Seattle Run series (5 and 10Ks) that are at Seward Park and there are also 5 and 10Ks around Green Lake but I don't remember what they are called. There was just a Tunnel to Viaduct 8K last weekend. Just so many races and running groups there!

@shanaber Thanks so much for this! We really have an embarrassment of riches here, and mostly I’ve only run 5Ks with my kids, their choice. The Magnuson series is super convenient for me, though, so I’ve done one of those 10Ks. The Vancouver half is pretty motivating for me right now, though, especially if this crazy snow and ice lets up—it’s very inconvenient for my first week of the half training schedule!

Yeah, I feel ya. Today I did NOT get to run 1.7 miles home from the gym, or at least, I chose to walk it instead. Not because of the cold, but because we got a bunch of snow and the thought of running on unevenly packed down snowy sidewalks and over snow-and-ice-mounded curbs and across slushy streets and so on and so forth for a dozen blocks was just too much. The workout at the gym was kind of rough, too - I've been sick and ended up out of breath really quickly. I tried not to be grumpy about it, but I was grumpy about it. For whatever reason the vibe of the class seemed more "get done and get out" than other times I've been there, but that could have been just me.
So my mileage for the month remains 3.8 from my run last weekend, and I'm not even on the board yet for this week, though I'm feeling optimistic about getting around at least one of the lakes on Sunday. Maybe two if I'm feeling wacky!

The temps took a 30 degree dive during the day today and the wind is brutal right now so feels like it dropped 20 more. Fortunately I ran this morning on the treadmill before strength training, but walking the dog was tough and got cut way short. Treadmill run was okay overall but as usual the first 10 minutes felt eternal and uncomfortable. The inner dialogue of "OMG is that all the time that has elapsed" gets tiresome some days on the old 'mill.
Circuit training group was just me today, so it was nice to get some personal attention but intense. Started out with monkey bars and I made it 10 rungs this time - improved from 7 a couple of weeks ago. Then we did 10 rounds of club swings, Turkish get ups, gravedigger lunges with a mace, and offset rows with the mace. I did my highest weight kettlebell yet on the last set of get-ups and it was wobbly but I made it! Then finished up with one more try at the monkey bars and I think I got 11 although the last one was pretty much an immediate drop. Calling that workout as the push-up challenge work for today.
Dreading tomorrow morning's run calling for snow and wind.
