Beautiful weather today. A guy I met through my neighborhood Strava group showed me around some trails in my neighborhood today, so did about 4.5 miles of trails and another 2 of sidewalks to get to and back from the trail. There is a small lake with a trail around it and the area is beautiful. Parts of it are pretty maintained and easy but some parts were muddy with big tire ruts and were definitely a challenge. My calves were tight and tired by the end. Running on trails certainly wears my legs out quickly! It’s nice to know it is there and gives me another option for mixing things up. Going to get a good rolling session in tonight and take an easy recovery run tomorrow.

My new phone is a fancy dual camera thing - 24 megapixel front camera. Its quite high tech and I'm still figuring it out. It takes beautiful pics but they just look a bit overprocessed to my eye. Built in beautification I think.
What phone is it? You can adjust a lot of that in the settings. And if you are used to older phone pics they will tend to look over processed because new phones are *almost* as good as real cameras. Most people can't tell the difference between my phone and DSLR landscapes.
Its a Huawei Nova 3i - Ive come from a samsung. I am trying to play with the settings but am still figuring out what a lot of them mean. still they are nice pics.1 -

Went out for 18 yesterday, phone had issues with Spotify and Strava. Endomondo said 11.8 vs Strava's 11.3. Took a spill at about mile 11, didn't left foot up high enough in a curb cut, hit knee and where my phone was strapped to my arm and obtained a temporary running badge on my knee and shoulder was kinda sore.
Made it about another 1/3 to 1/2 mile, then pulled up limping. Called wife and had her come get me 🙄. Ibuprofen and an ice bath later and everything felt better and not quite as swollen. Nap time with the wife and then midnight bowling for 3 hours rounded out last night. To bed at 0300 then up at 0900 for today's run to keep the streak going.
Just over 4 miles this morning at a pace which really surprised me given how the knee looked today. Being empaneled for Grand Jury tomorrow😖 and have TRX class after my run in the morning. Will be up early for about 6ish I hope before class but we'll see how much time I have.

It's been a rough week, running wise. I've only managed one run, but it was a 15 mile run so that was nice.
I got just slammed at work the week ending today and will likely log 60 to 70 hours. Tuesday run was skipped due to work. Wednesday's run was skipped due to an impromptu Valentines Day dinner date. Thursday's run was skipped due to work. Friday was a rest day. I didn't need it but with two long runs planned this weekend I worked late and went to bed early.
I did get a great 15 miler in yesterday but my foot started hurting at 12 miles. My tendon pain actually started returning after last weekends 3 hour slog through soft, uneven snow.
Today I wanted 10 to 15 miles on trail but decided to get some work done first. I still haven't gotten out. I could get in 6 to 8 yet but have decided to give my foot a rest, keep working, and start packing for my trip to KC next weekend.
This pretty much guarantees I won't reach my goal this month, particularly since I'll likely be slammed at work through March.10 -

Today's run was awesome! I've been wanting to run out to the lake which is about 6.5 miles from my house. But 13 miles is a little longer than I usually want to run. My long runs are usually 8-10 miles. So today I asked my husband if I could just text him when I was ready and he could come get me. So I ran out to the lake which was 6.57 miles and then texted him that I was heading to Walmart and should be there in about 30 minutes. It worked out perfectly. I ran 9.32 miles which was just about what I wanted for today. The lake looked so pretty. A few years ago because of the drought our lake was only 11% full and the area I ran to today had no water in sight. It always makes me happy to see it full of water. I had just enough sunshine to keep the 43F temp from feeling too cool and really the only time I was coldish was when I was running into the N wind. All in all it was a great run.
re: Monthly running goals: My goals for this month were to run a HM, which I did on 2/2, beat my HM PR, also on 2/2, and run out to the lake which I did today. I guess I need some more goals.
I don't know if there is anything about me that you don't know that is very interesting. I am one of 5 daughters with no brothers. And I am an Aggie. And since we discussed geneology I am also a descendant of William Wallace. So I guess @zeesparrow and I are both Bravehearts. And @shanaber I have also been mispronouncing your name in my head all this time.
re: Older racers There was a lady at a 5K that I ran who is 79 and she has run in all 254 counties in Texas. She usually finishes in the middle of the pack too.

After yesterday's terrible run, I took a nap and then headed out with the dog for a walk. I promptly wiped out on the ice on my driveway that I thought was just snow. I sat there stunned and it took a bit to get up but the only damage appeared to be a little scrape on my hand and my pinky finger was bruised. But between that and some housecleaning this morning I really did something to my lower back. I did some stretches at the gym and attempted a gentle run on the treadmill thinking it might loosen up but had to quit after 2 miles. I'll have to see how this plays out with the half coming up in one week. I was already feeling not in half marathon shape after yesterday's run, but definitely am not right at the moment.14 -
Well friends, I have to come clean: yesterday was a DNS for the 10K race. My husband woke up with a migraine and I really didn’t need any more convincing to stay on the couch. Running hasn’t been much fun this week, and it’s important to me that it stays fun. The cold isn’t my biggest issue right now, but the packed down snow is. I read that we’ve gotten around 20 inches in the last two weeks and with temperatures in the teens and lower, it’s just not going anywhere. I tried an easy run home from the gym on Friday and my hamstrings objected within a block.
I’ve decided to give myself permission not to run until March, when I plan on starting half marathon training. If I do get a run in before then, then great (fingers crossed for some sun). I’ll keep up my weekly cardio with the exercise bike (uggggg) which doesn’t have to be fun, it just needs to get done. I've been playing around with Hal Higdon's Novice 2 Half marathon program and I think I've worked out how to fit that with my strength classes.
Since my morning was unexpectedly free, I decided to pull the trigger on the tattoo I’ve been considering for a few years now. The shop that did my last two does walk-ins on Saturday so that worked out just fine.
Basic nerd
So my numbers for the week are a little low on the vigorous cardio side - only one short run on Monday and a half hour of shoveling on Tuesday - but I got almost 300 minutes of moderate cardio in with a lot of walking, three strength workouts including a KILLER century circuit on Friday, and 41 minutes of mobility work not counting the long stretch I’m planning to do this evening. I can live with that.

Genealogy topic: My mom has been into genealogy for 30+ years and we've got our lines traced way back to Switzerland, Germany, and France. Two of the most interesting thing we've found out. 1) my great-great uncle was one of the guys in the posse who chased John Wilkes Booth into a barn after he shot President Lincoln. My mom found an article about it with my ancestor named. 2) Madonna is my distance cousin. 7th cousin I think.

@rheddmobile it depends on the race. For a short race I no longer get worked up and have no problem sleeping. For long races I'm so excited that feel like i get just a few hours sleep. It doesn't help that i usually stay up late getting ready to begin with. I have a 20 miler in a week and since I plan on treating it like an easy run, I don't expect sleep will be an issue.8 -

I failed to come last in my AG, was 12th of 16. My daughter is actually pretty chuffed because although she walked half of it she was still 9th of the19 teenaged girls. Hopefully this will motivate her to actually train a bit for the others (it's a series of 3, 3km today, 5km next month and 7km in April).

I'm getting there. It was a very busy week with work, Valentine's Day, my husband's birthday, and a Baking Competition. I didn't even get in any rounds of Disc Golf this week! Things should be a lot smoother for a while.9 -
The last couple of miles, I noticed some calf aches that were reminiscent of running the late miles of a marathon. Wasn't worried, because it was in the meat of the calf and probably just needed electrolytes. Chugged my Nuun, and after I finished and got some good stretching in it didn't bother me. Other than that, I didn't notice anything resembling tired legs.
Interesting. My calf started bothering me on my cool down walk after my 20 miles run today. I was already drinking my propel at this point and calf got better by itself. Wonder if was the same issue as I was deliberately running with insufficient fuel. (Took in a total of 200 calories over 20 miles and no water/sports drink at all)

5 miles on the Greenline. I guess I could call this a tempo run - it was a "remind my body what it feels like to run fast on paved surfaces" run, shaking out the cobwebs. Anyway it was a 5 mi PR for my husband and me, 45:57 which is 9:10 pace, and I feel like we could have run it 15-20 seconds a mile faster if we were being chased by a bear or something.
Chilly, damp, generally unpleasant weather, but a good run. We got out there and I started to take off my jacket and thought, you know what? No. Just no. I don't feel like being chilly right now even if I end up too hot later. It was my Decathlon shell with the zippered vents on it and the flip mitts, and I used both of them, and they worked a treat - perfectly comfortable with the ventilation when I warmed up and unzippered all the vents, and my hands stayed comfortable. It was nice being a little warmer than I needed to be since the trails had standing water on them so my feet stayed wet the whole time.
When we turned onto the Greenline there was another couple running about 100m in front of us, and later my husband said he kept expecting us to overtake them and it irked him that we stayed exactly the same distance behind. Clearly I'm not the only competitive member of this family! Then they reached the turnaround, and came back towards us, and my husband starts laughing - because they were about half our age. So that made him feel better. I think he's grumpy because his asthma is keeping him from performing as well as he could. We run together, and I run pretty fast for a 50-54 yr old woman, but that generally means we are middle of the pack or lower for men in the same AG. He can physically run faster than I can, but it brings on the asthma almost every time.10 -
So today was a scheduled long run and decided I needed to test out my gear changes and make sure all was set for the 50k in May. Around here the May race could have snow or be 80. So doned my colder gear and left. Was like 30F so not really cold, but cold enough I guess.
Well at first it was nice
Then I hit hail
then I hit rain
then I hit snow
then hail agian
and finished with rain
BUT! I got all 20 miles in and ran the whole thing with a full hydration pack (Wunjo - great packs!) All seemed to work well. I deliberately did not take any water and only ate about 200 calories for the 20 miles. Just trying different things out seeing how they work.
Can say I was mostly happy with all things. The only real problem I had was that once my gloved got too wet, the hand warmers that power them got saturated and stopped working. Thankfully this at the very end of the run, but my hands were still nice and white from Ryanuds by the time I got home. Yay! Good hot shower set that right though.

The smartass answer is, "Not yet."
The honest answer is that I started running in August 2011 at the age of 55. I found a program similar to C25K. The first workout called for intervals of walk 1 minute, run 3 minutes. I walked 1 minute, ran 1 minute, and was compelled to slow to a walk. That's where I came from. After injuring myself on my way to my first half marathon, twice, I got some formal training and made it to my first half in April 2014. I kind of accidentally ran my first marathon at Buffalo on Memorial Day weekend, 2015; if I hadn't run Boston the year after that, my running buddies might have killed me for wasting a qualifying time.
So that's 4 years and 8 months from not being able to run more than 1 minute, to completing my first Boston Marathon. Others may have developed faster, but that was good enough for me.12 -
Had my first race of the year today, a 15K. First time I have raced that distance as well. It was the Atlanta Hot Chcocolate Series. Race was well organized and I recommend it.
Got to the race, dropped my coat and bag at gear check and realized I should have brought a throw-away shirt or something. It was misting, windy, and 47. I was wearing capris and a tank top. Race started right on time and I stayed with the 9:00 pacer group which was actually moving at about 8:50/mile. Around mile 5 they started to pull away from me as my stomach started sloshing around from drinking something called “Nuun” by accident instead of water. It was nasty. Anyway, the mile markers had clocks and I was hitting the 8:55 pace with absolute exactness. I had friends waiting for me at mile 7.5 so that was a nice treat to see them waving me on. Finished mile 9 slow because I had to walk a bit- my legs just had zero energy. And then I got my act together and started running. Crossed in 82:55 which was 8:54/mile. My 5K and 10K splits were 27:40, 55:23 (3 seconds slower than first split) and 82:55 (8 seconds faster than first split) so I stayed consistent though I have no idea how with my walking for a bit during mile 9.
I’ve noticed the past few times when I’ve raced that I don’t like the uncomfortableness of going all out, even towards the end. I know I could have run harder the last .33 of the race but I just don’t have the desire to right then and there until I see my time and realized I could have placed 5 numbers higher if I cut 10 seconds off my time. It’s like I don’t have it in me to mentally push myself when I am physically capable of it. It’s like I have an adversion to the discomfort of it.
This race was at the perfect temperature for me (high 40s) and damp and it wasn’t as hilly as my normal runs are. But my legs fatigued faster than normal despite my breathing staying better than normal. I blame skipping a few runs recently for a ski trip as well as a bit of dehydration caused by my own poor planning this morning.
But I want to mention that Nuun stuff was awful. Just give me some Gatorade!!!12 -

Long run of the week yesterday. I think I need a new lake.. getting really tired of running the same route day in and day out.
Energy levels took a nosedive around 5km. The rest of the run was a big slogfest. I remember being really really hungry last week on my long run too, maybe I should rethink the "no fuel needed for less than 15km" strategy.
