tired legs. it was a leg intensive yoga class prior to getting home. i was going to run outside but nope. very icy out on the sidewalks. but got my miles. i have to get miles in. can't fake marathon training

@amirahdaboss I have a Garmin FR35. I really like it. It is a pretty basic running watch, but it does everything I need and wasn't too expensive. I may look into a refurbished Garmin when I upgrade since it seems like several people on here have had good luck with them.5

Hello running friends! Tomorrow will be two weeks since my last run. I wish I could say that giving myself permission to take the rest of February off was a relief and I haven't second-guessed myself at all, but that would be untrue. I've definitely felt myself getting shorter and shorter tempered as the month has gone on, although I don't put that entirely on the lack of running as February is traditionally a tough month for many of us in the frozen North, plus I've been eating at a deficit, plus have a new assignment at work which is stressful in and of itself.
As a result of all this, I've been spending way too much time this week napping and mulling over what makes a life meaningful, because that's how my brain responds to February I guess. So far I figure that the best most of us can hope for is to leave the world a very tiny bit better than it would have been without you in it. The campfire rule for life. You're welcome.
The half marathon training program I'd like to do (Hal Higdon Novice 2) should start March 11 for a June 1 half marathon. I'd rather not go from a month of no running to 13 miles a week so I'm going to need to come to some sort of peace with the snow on the ground. We've had over 30 inches of snow this month, and with highs averaging around the mid-20s it's not going anywhere other than larger and larger piles. The forecast for the weekend is another 5-8 inches, and who knows what March and April will bring - last year we had significant snow through late April.
THAT SAID - I also need to remember that last winter I only ran a half-dozen times between January and March, and not at all between March 25th and April 22nd, but starting April 23rd I ran at least three times a week every week until the end of October. And I was a much weaker runner last year than I am now - May 6th was the first time I topped three miles at once. I ran 42 miles last month, and even if I've only run three times this month, one of those was a 10K plus in a freaking snowstorm. That was awesome.
So I know I need to be patient and cut myself some slack, I'm just crummy at it. I'll keep up the strength training, bill as close to 40 hours a week as I can even if my sleeping is a mess and I'm having a heck of a time focusing, and remember that I need to take care of myself first if I want to have any hope of leaving the world a very tiny bit better place than it would have been without me in it.
And consider buying a *gulp* treadmill for next winter.9 -
Be rough week for runs, but if I run two back to back half marathons, then a 15-17 mile run I can still make my planned weekly total... it will look nothing like the plan, but eh, what do the experts know about planning anyways!14

Scheduled rest day today. I'm starting to think again about going from a five day running week to a six day running week. But I'm also remembering how quickly that extra day of running broke me down physically back in October. And I've already forgotten how drained I felt yesterday. Another advantage for the elderly!!!
If six days a week broke you down last October, and you're over the age of 60, I'd advise you not to run six days a week. I'm 63, and it took me a while to realize I can't run six days a week all the time. I can do it for a week, for 2 weeks, maybe for 5 weeks; but if I keep it up for a marathon training cycle, I'll get injured.
It looks like I'll be over 200 miles for February (over 320 km); but I'll do it running 5 days a week. I really need those 2 days off from running. Sometimes they need to be real rest days, other times they're simply non-running days; but I need that break from running. It's part of how I will get to Boyleston Street and live to run more the next week.
Rest is the most under-appreciated part of training.15 -
@MobyCarp - I had a similar issue with my HRM a couple of months ago. I was fighting with Polar on just getting some questions answered and all they would say is send it back to us and for a small fee we will analyze it for you... ends up it was under warranty. I was able to send it back for free and they replaced it with a new one.

No run for me today even though it is sunny and beautiful out. I will be getting to the gym this afternoon for some lifting and cycling.3 -
According to my half training plan, im supposed to do 4 miles today. Im skipping my run today though because im going on a movie/dinner date with my mom, which I haven’t done in ages, so I’m not mad about it . I’ve been feeling worn out too, so I think my legs could use a break. Depending on what time we end up going, I may be able to squeeze in a couple of miles before we go, but I’m not sweating it.8

I'm bringing my Salomon Speedcross with me for the race tomorrow, which promises to be a mud fest. They're too narrow for me but with thin socks and plenty of lube on my feet they're my best option for mud. I've heard they came out with a wider version so I may look into a pair of those. That tread is also great for slushy trails.
I have the fellraiser, so bought the speedtrak as I'd got on well with them, except that found they got a bit tight over time as my feet seem to have got bigger...
I bought half a size up. They're still snug, and perhaps I should investigate the speedcross in wide, although I don't know how much I WANT the extra cushioning.1 -
12 miles of hills today. I went back to this soul crusher of a hill that I ran for the first time a month ago. It's 1.05 miles long, 220 ft of elevation gain, average grade of 4% but is 15.5% grade at its steepest. A month ago I trudged up it in 9:58 (a 9:28 pace) and today I went back and vowed to best myself. And then I ended up besting the entire Strava leaderboard and I'm now the women's segment record holder (which hadn't been topped since 2014) I did that 1.05 mile-long hill in 8:36 (8:10 pace) with only a slightly higher HR than a month ago.
Something I've been working on this year so far is running more hills, and running them better. And this is definitely proof positive that this tactic is working. I'm not quite as daunted by hills anymore, but instead I'm excited to challenge myself running up (and down!) them. I've been putting hills into all my runs -- long runs, tempo run warm up/cool down, recovery runs -- AND strengthening my core has made running hills (up and down them) easier. I have a hilly HM in a month that I want to PR at, and I know my 50k in July is pretty hilly, so I hope all this hill training pays off at both these races!

A few thoughts on Geneaology – over here in the UK one of the best sources for historic Parish records (registers of births), without having to find each and every location is actually the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints. A while back, when they were keen to baptise all their ancestors, they photographed all the records on microfiche, and you can go to their head office here and scroll through. My mum has done a fair amount of research on her own family, helped somewhat by someone a hundred years ago already having done a lot (and them being 'landed gentry' meaning there are better records).
Famous Ancestors - I am descended from the family of Sir Walter Raleigh, he of the potatoes and tobacco. Also, one of my ancestors died from going into premature labour after falling over a pig.
I would also be very wary of websites that show you descended from someone major - it's very very hard to find information for anything earlier than a few generations because records just weren't kept.
regarding finding your own name printed on stuff, this has NEVER happened for me. EVER. I still look.

Running – I am ill. I don’t know if this is thyroid related, or whether I have stomach cancer/a brain tumour/ gastroenteritis/peptic ulcer/multiple sclerosis etc. but I have felt like I am beginning to get a cold/flu for a couple of weeks now, complete with constant headache, stomach cramps and constipation. I don’t much feel like running. The Endo has accepted that I am subclinical hypothyroid and I was given the option of no treatment or start levothyroxine. I pointed out that having headaches for the rest of my life wasn’t an option so could I have the pills please. It’s been less than a week so am hoping things begin to improve in the next month. If not then I probably have one of the diseases mentioned above.
So I haven’t run. I WANT to run, but have no hwyl. It’s five weeks until my half-marathon and my longest run of late is 6.5 miles. I have done several 10mile walks over rough terrain, but if I don’t get back running soon I’ll be staying in bed on HM day. It’s off-road and I have no illusions about being a racing sort of person anyway. It’s 17 weeks until my marathon so that still remains a possibility, providing I don’t have one of the diseases above. Don’t get me wrong, I know I don’t but right now I’m thoroughly depressed by it all. (I was told last week ‘you don’t look depressed’. I wasn’t aware there was a special look. Anyone know?). Actually, part of the reason I DO feel depressed is that both of my sisters DO have horrible diseases like those described above, and I feel guilty talking about being ill like I’m not allowed. Hence why I just walk around with a stiff upper lip and a grimace and pretend everything’s fine. Oh, and I had to call an ambulance for my flatmate because she had a heart arryhthmia thing going on. Send hugs but not prayers.
@girlinahat {hugs}. I am over 200+(ish) posts behind so I don’t know if you posted again about feeling crappy. Chronic illness sucks. My brain and body has dealt with many health catastrophes over the years (including autoimmune issues and depression/anxiety). If you need someone to talk to, feel free to PM me.0 -

Should have made the most of today's sunshine but I had promised someone I would go to crossfit so I did. Worked very hard lots of burpees, wall hall throws and medicine ball slams! After doing the food shop and going out for a blood test i went for a jog but my hips and knees were really feeling it from the morning session so i just did a mile. Still having stomach issues, had gp appointment this week. She thinks it's probably IBS but doing blood tests to rule out other things.
Total this month 20.

I think after a two week break I’m ready to get back at it. I really thought I slacked off for 3 weeks so nice surprise it’s just 2. I bet I still make that meager goal of 30 miles. My plan is two 1mile TM runs daily (am/pm) and with the weekend I bet I can snag enough to make goal and I’ll keep this schedule through March 5th. Some of you already know, but figure I’d update the masses, that I have surgery scheduled March 6th (femoral derotation osteotomy, right), and it’ll be sometime before I can run. Luckily the orthopedic surgeon is a marathoner and is cool with trying to keep me running although suggested I embrace cycling. I gather this could potentially be the first of more surgeries (FDO left, PAO right- but he nor I can tell the future so... we’ll see), but if this does the trick then it’s onward! If you happen to know any stories of running post FDO, please share!

Still taking it easy, but slowly continuing to extend the mileage out. Mother Nature decided to start raining at the beginning of my run, and then promptly finished as soon as I did. A wicked sense of humour you got there, Mrs Nature!
In other news, a new toy arrived today, so I get to do my best Stay Puft Marshmallow Man impressions while watching TV.

I did 10k!!! It's the longest I've run on my own in 6 weeks! So happy. It is misting rain today, still warm and humid. I used my hydration pack and what a difference it made! I didn't feel the prickly feeling - hard to describe but it's when I can feel I'm getting dehydrated. Best $35 ever spent haha.
It felt great to get back to that distance again. And on hills rather than the flat. My time was long (for me) but I know the more I do, the faster I'll get so not worried.

So got stopped by police AGAIN while running. At least this time they did not think I was a terrorist or something and did not ask for ID. Apparently, someone called up and, I am not joking, complained there was a car driving down the street. So the officer stopped me and asked if I had seen any cars. This is a multi-mile long road, and I was running at the time of day people would be driving home... like to the many homes on the side of the road? heh. I feel like there was more to the story that the officer man did not share.11

8 easy miles today. I wanted to do 10, but there was no way I was doing 100 minutes before work so I cut back to 80. Felt ok, legs had about 50% energy as they had yesterday, but that's what recovery runs are for, right?

I feel you. Sometimes I spend way too much time mulling over the meaning of life. I agree with you, that we should all hope to leave the world just a little bit better for having lived in it.
As for a treadmill....I love that I have mine for those days that I get home late, or it's just too darn cold or wet to get outside and exercise. I think you might actually like having one at home. The key is to find some kind of distraction while running on it....I do either music or some interesting TV show.

Attention all amateur internet doctors!
I have a foot question for you. (Yes, I am going to the real doctor. I can’t get in until next week).
During my run yesterday, I started feeling a mild cramping pain on the inside arch of my right foot. It was just a niggle and it happen on the “back” part of my out-and-back run so I ignored it. Well, last night I got off work and took my shoes off. My foot had puffed up like the stay puff marshmallow man! It was not painful, just swollen and that little niggling cramping sensation occasionally.
Fast forward to the morning, the swelling is better but the inside arch is a little (okay maybe a tad more than a little) sore when weight bearing. I am resting and icing today.
Anyone have experience with something like this? I realize you guys are not doctors. Just asking if anyone has experienced a similar annoyance.7 -
@amymoreorless Plantar fasciitis? That can cause arch pain and is usually worse in the morning. Not sure about the swelling.1

@amymoreorless - I was going to say the same as @RunsOnEspresso. I tore mine and it was a sharper pain, then an ache, then swollen and achy.2

Decided to make today my long run. Tomorrow's forecast is for warm rain, with winds from 25 to 35 MPH and gusts up to 50 mph. Nice today: cloudy; 35 degrees F and a breeze from the southeast. Garmin Connect says it was 0 degrees C with a 17 kph wind from the east.

I hear ya about the rain. Here in W TN, we have traffic warnings to avoid flooded streets down by the Mississippi river! My mom out in the country is getting cut off by the Wolf River if it goes much higher. And my 10k trail race Sunday afternoon is on the banks of the Wolf!
