@_nikkiwolf_ I haven't done a Spartan but started this whole thing by signing up for a Tough Mudder. Forget about the running bit, upper body strength and some good tall and strong friends is what you need. Give it a go. You will find muscles in your body you didn't know existed as they'll tell you they exist all the next day, and the next and the next....
This is good to clarify. There is very little running in these things. Many walk the whole thing. It really is mostly an upper-body sport. T-Rexs like me do not do well4 -
/pours one out for February. Thanks for the support, all - I hope I haven’t been too whiny the last few weeks of not running. As the conversation above reminds me, deciding not to run is different from being physically unable to run, and I am eagerly looking forward to getting back on the road in March, one way or another.6

It snowed another inch or two overnight and I'm a little sore this morning, partly from my fall yesterday as well as from some mobility work I did last night (which was so good). I'm reporting in for the month now, as I don't think I'll get my last 2 miles in. I might just add those to next month's total.zeesparrow wrote: »Count me in. I think this is my third month with a goal of 30 miles. Third time's the charm!?
IT WAS! As of this morning, I have 36.92 miles run, 41.85 miles walked for the month. (This is ~14 miles more running, and 20+ miles more walking than last month!)
As for my other goals...
1) Lower body fat - yes
2) Lower weight - yes
3) Run 3x per week - sure did
4) Strength train 2x per week (starting w/1x) - I didn't think so, but my log says I did! Pleasantly surprised.
5) Walk 3-4x per week - nope. I didn't walk at all the week of the 11th, preferring to hide from the cold and snow instead.
6) Bike/cross train 1-2x per week - almost (see previous comment)
7) Mobility exercises 3x+ per week - no, but I have done 2x per week beginning on the 11th.
8) Not to pressure myself! I've found the joy of running again, I don't want to spoil it by getting all "OMG, I HAVE to run for this goal I'm setting!" or I HAVE to train for this race! (stolen from @dreamer12151) - Mostly. I might have run a little far last week when I did 10k.
Overall, I am pleased with my progress.9 -

Life and work have been in the way lately. I have gotten in runs, but I’ve missed some too, and I didn’t make my goal. Hubby has been complaining a lot about me running and not being home - he travels a good bit for work and really wants me to be at home whenever he is home. He doesn’t understand that i need that hour or so for many reasons. So, I’ve been guilted out of running a lot lately. I’m stressing some because I have my half in a little over a month. I know I will finish, but I don’t think my time is going to be as good as I’d hoped.
Hope everyone else did well this month. I’m hoping to make March better.
my late husband used to be the same. he complained if i ran at night, if i ran in the morning. complained if i ran a race. but i did it anyways. because murder is frowned upon.

Next year when you pop in here claiming your December 2019 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
Run at least 4 5k races.
Get under 30:00 and a PR for 5k.
Average at least 135k per month, which would put me over 1,000 miles for the year.
Run the Year Team: Five for Nineteen
20 degrees F, sunny, with a light breeze out of the north. Did my 6.7k today in honor of my 67th birthday. Found myself wondering at the end of the sixth kilometer how many people could run 100 meters for each year they've been around? I would not have been able to do it just two years ago. On to March!!

Updated totals, because I couldn't say no to these two:
I probably should have though. Distance: 1.36 miles. Time: 21:27 minutes. Pace: 15:43/mi. Snow depth: 2-3" fresh on top of snowpacked/icy roads. Number of Falls: 0. Number of Near-falls: 2. Number of Times I slipped: too many to keep track. Times I intentionally sat on my butt to avoid falling: 1. It was rather hilarious though, to be honest. We were all surprised by a couple of great danes in a yard on the other side of the street, and both of my dogs decided they wanted to say hi. Cue me slipping, sliding and being pulled sideways until I just sat on the ground and was pulled on my butt the rest of the way across the street. I was alternately saying "It's OK, come on" and laughing at the ridiculousness of it all.7 -
After several goal adjustments due to various reasons my goal was 40 for February.
I barely squeaked by with 40.7.
On to March!10 -

Run notes:
Workout Wednesday yesterday was very successful! The plan was 1 mile warm up, 3x1 mile repeats with 1/2 mile easy between, 400m easy, 2x400m repeats with 400m easy between, and 1 mile cool down. My goal was to run the miles at sub-8 pace and the 400s sub-7 pace. Actual splits were 7:52, 7:51, 7:48 for the miles and 6:55 pace for both quarters, so I was very happy with how things went! My legs were very very tired afterwards haha.
No run today, so I guess I'm closing out the month now at 92.74 miles - well over my goal of 75 miles. The comeback is going well! I'll see you all in the March thread
Registered races:
- Excalibur 10 Miler (3/17)
- Wintrust Lakefront 5K (4/13)
- Ravenswood Run 5K (4/28)
- Space Coast Half Marathon (12/01)10 -

Snap! Very tempting, but very much frowned upon 😂5 -
Saw the ortho this morning and he has cut me free to start building up my running base again! WhooHoo!!! He also said my May HM was perfect timing to see how I progress and how I do with the race!
@amirahdaboss and @eleanorhawkins - I also went from pity party to anger to sulking resignation. I think my DH is as excited as I am (maybe more so) that I can begin to run more.
@marisap2010 - is there anyway you can involve your DH on some of your outings? Maybe walk some with him then run on your own and meet back to finish up with him? It is easy for me to suggest, DH won't even go for a walk with me... It has taken us a long time but he finally, after seeing how stressed out I was with work, realized that running helped me to work that stress out mostly and then I was a much nicer person to be around. He would even suggest it once in a while.
@zeesparrow - you have made great progress!
@Tramboman - Happy Happy 67th Birthday! If I had been running in December I would have run a bit over a 10k (6.3 miles) for mine! I will have to remember it this December!
@AlphaHowls - you are amazing! I hope I can get in 500 miles this YEAR!
For those of us who are over 40, I am reading one of Jeff Galloway's books - 'Running until You're 100'. Good stuff there. It is actually applicable to anyone but I really appreciate his analysis and recommendations. I don't know that I can tolerate his particular run/walk recommendations because the intervals are so short but I am looking to use a similar approach for building back on my base and depending on how the return to running goes I might use it for the HM in May.15 -
In MN at a conference, so no outside running for me! With the coat I borrowed, worn on top of my own coat, 2 layers of shirts and 2 layers of pants, it's not bad. But inside I feel like I'll have a heat stroke!
The gym here is HUGE. 33,000 sq feet! Never seen such a big hotel gym.
Interestingly there are just 10 treadmills and all of them were being used when I was running this morning. Got to get there early tomorrow to make sure I beat the crowd!
Not sure if it has already been mentioned (since I've been bad at keeping up, it may have been), but there is an inspiring movie for runners over 50 (or anyone!) The Human Race - available on Amazon Prime. Maybe available other places, not sure. I enjoyed it anyway! Can't believe last day of Feb is tomorrow! Oops just came back to correct this... it's today. I'm .6 miles short. If I'd known that I'd have gone a little longer this morning.

I think I remember talking to you about this conference a few months ago and saying it could be anywhere from -25 to 30s. And here it turns out that we're closer to the bottom of that scale than the top, and have had the snowiest February on record! I haven't run in almost three weeks, though I think @7lenny7 is still getting out there regularly! Good luck with the treadmills tomorrow!
And yeah, transitioning from outside to inside can be brutal - a lot of places keep the heat way too high this time of year. It's probably for some practical reason, but it does lead to boiling alive in one's coat sometimes.2 -
-
@shanaber that's excellent news! I will look out for the book, I sort of used the run-walk for my HM but I have always done 9:1. Don't think I could have run the entire thing without walk breaks, but I need a fixed structure rather than just walking when I need to, so that worked really well for me. I'm running a 5k with mini-me in March and am thinking of trying 4:1 for that to see how she (and my legs) get on.4

@shanaber That's great news... and thanks!1

First day of being on-call, and I got called mid-run so had to abort. Ah well, I guess that wraps things up for February.

@zeesparrow sorry that you fell too! The ice has been particulary bad lately
@mbaker566 one of these days I'll make it to the track, it's right by my work so it would be convenient.3 -
Easy little run after work today to round off February. All the little .01s added up on Garmin and Strava to 201 after today's jaunt. Kept it nice and easy, HR averaged 136. Just hoping now for the just-above-freezing-temp rain holds off tonight/tomorrow so I can get my planned 10 miles in tomorrow and get March started on the right foot (so to speak)!
Pretty darn pleased with this mileage. I had 200 as a goal, 204 on my schedule, and squeaked in with 201. That's 10 more miles than January, in 3 fewer days. I averaged 6.16 miles/day in Jan and 7.18 per day in February. Not sure if I'll top that in March but I'll certainly try!
Onward, folks!

@shanaber Thanks for thinking of me.
With the cold and snow that everyone in the US has been getting you can multiply that by a whole bunch ( especially the cold ) for us Northern folk. I have a grand total of about 30km for the month, an all time low.
Away on work trip to Edmonton this week 12 -14 hr days ( -4 to -10C ) so was beautiful running weather but just no gas left.
Drove back home today, 30-50km/h winds out of the NE and temp has dropped to ~-15C plus windchill =
Forecast for the rest of the week WC at ~-40C. Getting grumpy. Good thing I have swimming.
March can't come fast enough.6 -

Pretty cold (for me) 37F with 12 mph wind. The run itself was good, after having to endure that indoor 'running' torture yesterday. But when I got home at 6pm, all fingers on both hands were completely white. It wasn't until 7:30pm that I got color and feeling back.
Came a lot closer to goal than I thought.
Pics of hands (not for the squeamish )8 -
@scott6255 Yikes. Were you carrying a water bottle? Did you have gloves?0

Nominal February mileage goal: 190 miles
Real Goals: Train well toward Boston. Work the February races into the training plan smoothly. Remain uninjured, even if it means cutting back on planned mileage or races.
Today's notes – The plan was to have breakfast, a snack, and get out to run about 11, then come home for a late lunch. I remembered to skip my normal morning cross-training exercises in favor of shoveling the driveway; but I made the poor choice of using a shovel and not bothering with the snowblower. It was right on the edge of really needing to use the snowblower, and I felt beat up after shoveling. So no 11 AM run. Eat lunch, recover, ended up getting out about 3:30 PM.
After yesterday's unplanned rest day, I thought I'd see about just running a nice easy 16 miles today. That's one mile over the plan assignment (15 easy), and right what I need so that a 20 mile run on Saturday brings the week in on target. Ran a bunch of familiar roads, with major parts of my route in the reverse direction from what I usually run. Found some side streets that weren't well cleared, and some sidewalk along major streets that would have been really annoying if I needed to run it for more distance, but otherwise had a pleasant run. Temperature fell from 25° F to 22° F as I ran, wind was light, I was dressed appropriately. I had some issues late in the route from not thinking about where I would be running at 5 PM, but I managed to work around them.
The pattern of hills looks and feels different when I run the other direction. Some of this was expected, there were a couple surprises on the road I had never run in this direction before.
So that's it for February. How did I do versus goals? Blew past the nominal mileage goal, which I set in anticipation that something would happen to make me back off from 50 mile weeks. Nothing like that happened, so I came in comfortably over 200 miles. Boston training is going well, with a 20 mile run, 2 16 mile runs, and some medium long runs in February. I managed to train around 3 races in February, and remain uninjured. I'll call it a total win versus goals for February.
Now I need to think about goals for March. Training and race goals are straightforward, but I'm not so sure about predicting total miles for March.

That is normal for what Raynaud's looks like. Same problem I have. At 37 degrees I would have had fingers effected even with normal gloves on. Today was in the low thirties actually and I used my heated gloves.
Really not fun. @scott6255 you should be more careful!4 -
Pretty cold (for me) 37F with 12 mph wind. The run itself was good, after having to endure that indoor 'running' torture yesterday. But when I got home at 6pm, all fingers on both hands were completely white. It wasn't until 7:30pm that I got color and feeling back.
Came a lot closer to goal than I thought.
Pics of hands (not for the squeamish )
Oh my gracious! Did you know you had Raynaud's or is this a new thing?0 -

Wasn't carrying anything. Had warm lined gloves. Didn't really happen until I got inside. I think it is caused by a sudden change in temperature.
Yes, I knew I have Raynaud's. Sometimes it is worse than others.7 -
Last run for February. Got in 5k more or less on the Greenway where they are still working to rebuild the bathrooms - funny story about that - there is a portapotty while the bathroom is being built, and we noticed it was a completely different color and design than the one we used last week. I wondered if it had to do with the recent flooding which was about three to six feet over the parking lot. Sure enough, chatted with a workman and turns out the flooding swept the old potty into the middle of the Wolf River and they had to get a replacement. Then the new potty was flooded, and the interior is now filled with river mud. But at least it was tied down so it's still there!
The water was mostly down below trail level today, except for one stretch of about thirty feet, but the (paved) trails were covered in river guck. And the river is high and fast! Jonquils and narcissus everywhere, which won't last long since we are supposed to get down to 18 F on Sunday. The cold is already starting to come in, two days ago temp was 73, today 37 and lightly misting rain.
Today was the world's slowest speedwork. My legs are tired from Romanian deadlifts and my husband's back is still tweaked. Basically ran a bunch of intervals alternating easy and fast pace. We haven't done speedwork on a paved surface in a while because of so much running on trails so it was sort of an informal attempt to figure out what our current fast pace looks like. Seems like 7:30 is about what we can manage for 800 m. I'm working on form - being more forward, lifting my knees and kicking more, and it does seem to make me faster.
On our cooldown walk we accidentally got between a doe and one of her two babies. We didn't see the second baby and had stopped to look at the mother and the first one, and she kept ducking her head at us and approaching closer. Turned around and there was the second faun on the other side of the running trail, trying to work up the nerve to run by us. So we apologized and left so she could get her family back together.12
