A little bit cooler this morning. Rain this week is supposed to bring the high temps back down into to 60-70s. Yey!
I realized this morning that I have run 30 miles in three days. I should probably take a rest day and sleep in tomorrow morning.

Next year when you pop in here claiming your December 2019 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
Run at least 4 5k races.
Get under 30:00 and a PR for 5k.
Average at least 135k per month, which would put me over 1,000 miles for the year.
Run the Year Team: Five for Nineteen
Temperature in the mid forties today, but a brutal wind out of the southwest that was gusting up to about 35 mph.
It was really strange to hear the rain beating on the roof last night.
The time change didn't bother me much -- I just slept an extra hour. Sometimes being old is an advantage.
2019 Races:
4-13 Shine the Light 5K
6-1 Freedom 5K
6-30 Strides for Starfish 5K5 -
@avidkeo if you haven’t made your mind up yet - buy the mixer.
My Kenwood A700D. Dates from the 1950’s bought off eBay. Still going (probably could do with a new motor and certainly the cable rubber is melting)
And it’s beautiful

@PastorVincent you were totally right, it was a blast and the people were awesome. A very good bunch of crazies. Are they usually sliding downhill in the mud or on grass?
Mud, grass, snow, whatever. If it is slippery and steep, side down.

@girlinahat you have a package coming!

18 mile workout is DONE! I meant to do it as a progression, but scrapped it in favor of alternating marathon and half-marathon paces because after 3 peak weeks, my legs were just like, "We are NOT running a 7 minute mile, you dummy."
So I did 3 miles to warm up, 4 at MP, 1 easy, 3 at HMP, 1 easy, 2 at MP, 1 easy, 1 at HMP, and 2 to cool down. I took 1 gel, drank 10 oz of water, had one potty stop, and boy, was I tired. But in a good way, not a "I cannot move one more step after my watch hits 18 miles" way. Still a bit anxious about this PR goal at my race in two weeks since I'm struggling to hit my 7:17-7:22 goal pace, but I think a taper and a race environment will push me over the edge.
March miles:
3/1: 10 miles
3/2: Rest day
3/3: 17 miles
3/4: 5 miles
3/5: 6.3 + 3.5 miles
3/6: 8 miles
3/7: Rest day
3/8: 10.5 miles
3/9: 4 miles
3/10: 18 miles
March total: 82.3 miles
2019 Races
March 16: Four Courts Four Miler (Goal: Fun!)
March 24: Caesar Rodney Half Marathon (Goal: PR)
April 7: Cherry Blossom 10 Miler (Goal: Sub-75)
April 28: New Jersey Marathon (Goal: BQ)
July 6: Finger Lake Fifties 50k (Goal: Finish)

@katharmonic Spartan/Obstacle Course Races are supposed be be fun and challenging, exactly what you experienced, Well done. You had a snow slide, we setup a water slide at our local OCR in September.
Because we had such a horrific February ( 27km running in Feb) it's like I am back at a building stage.
Since I have now passed February's total run distance March is already a success.
Saturday 11 km with 3 ladies from our little club, It was an interesting run - at the start it was -21C.
As we climbed the hill out of the valley we hit a Temperature Inversion zone at about the 2.5 to 3 km mark where we ran into much warmer air ~ -5C. At first you just think that you have finally warmed up to a proper run temperature, than you start venting zippers and realize how warm it is, stripping gear to regulate. Coming back you hit the inversion layer back into the cold so had to quickly get back into the gear. I expect big temp swings on long runs that start early in the morning but not on what I would consider a mid-distance/shorty. There was quite a bit of ice and did have my push off foot break free 5-6 times but no falls. Still a nice day as the sun was shining which helps lift the mood.
We had a really good post run chat/laugh about the first time we experienced "Runners Jelly Legs" where at the end of an event you go to walk back to your hotel and struggle to step up over the curb off the street back to the sidewalk, the 2-3 steps at the Hotel entrance that feels like Mt. Everest. One lady related how she was so beat by the heat she sat/laid down on the grass while waiting for friends and family to finish, then realized she might not be able to get back to her feet. As she said "two handsome medics" helped her back to her feet, with her friends laughing at her.
Sunday - 5.15 km Real Estate run, Very sore lower abdomen, blame that on the ice when my push off would break free yesterday. Took me 2 km to get loose/relax before I felt good. Another chilly run.
Between swimming and running this week - tomorrow will be a rest day.

@katharmonic Congratulations on completing the Spartan race!!! I was waiting eagerly to read your race report Sounds like you had a blast! I didn't know there would be so much sliding instead of running ^^
Out of personal curiosity: how much did you help each other in the team, would it have been much harder on your own? ((cause I won't have a team if I do the Spartan in July that I'm thinking about)).
From your description, you failed 4 obstacles, so you had to do 120 burpees? That's already quite a workout in itself! I just did a mini-workout this evening that was 5 sets of 15 burpees with 90s rest in between. Planning to gradually increase that to 5 sets of 30 burpees, but that number still seems daunting... 4x 30 in the middle of a tough race sound insane
I hope you get some well-earned rest now. You should wear that shirt and medal around all week!

So, it looks like March is already one third over? How did that happen so fast?
I only went for 5 runs so far. But some strength training / cross training too, so overall it's fine. Still - trying to get in a minimum of four runs instead of three next week would be better!
1.3.19 rest

3.3.19 13km run, fitnessblender upper body

7.3.19 rest
8.3.19 7km run
9.3.19 12km run, fitnessblender upper body
10.3.19 fitnessblender upper + lower body

I've been a bit quiet of late as my time has been consumed with a new work project. Still running though. And reading all your posts.
I ran the Riverhead Rampage on Saturday. 10k trail run in the beautiful bush. Quite a few steep hills and a couple of incredibly steep ones. Makes for a long run and some pretty high heart rates. Fun though. Beautiful too.
As a bonus, my running team managed to take out first place for fastest average team time, which netted us each a beer glass!

Inspired by a near faceplant during my run today, what is your most embarrassing running fall story, if you have one?
A couple of winters ago I was running in our neighborhood at night on snow and ice covered roads. I went down a cul-de-sac where two young boys were busy making a snow fort at the end of their driveway. As I turned started to make the turn around the end the road my foot hit a patch of ice and I fell on my *kitten*. Those two boys saw it and started belly laughing at the site. The site of those two young kids laughing made me laugh. I just did my best to keep a normal stride even though my hip was killing me after that.
@HonuNui I always love your scuba photos.
@katharmonic that spartan race sounds like a blast, I'm glad you enjoyed it. I had never given any thought to doing anything like that but now you have me interested, particularly if I found one with SNOW.
@amymoreorless those temps sound aweful! And the pacers had trouble finding the route!?!?! OUch! Hopefully the tacos and mimosas made up for it.
@ContraryMaryMary congrats on the team award! That's a very nice glass for the effort.

Thank you @juliet3455 and @_nikkiwolf_!
@_nikkiwolf_ I gotta admit I did not do anywhere near the 120 burpees that I was supposed to do. We did them for the first fail and then felt punished enough, so only did a handful for the next ones. It was so exhausting I didn't think I could make it adding all the burpees. Honestly I didn't see many people doing them beyond the first couple of obstacles and no one was policing it. We were in the open class though, and not elite or age group classes. I think if you are in those and eligible for awards they will definitely monitor it and you have to do them. That was my experience, I don't know if it's like that at every race and I'm sure Spartan purists would not approve.
As for the team vs. individual thing, in terms of physical help I didn't really get any assistance from my teammates in doing the obstacles, just a lot of advice and encouragement. The only obstacle I got a little help on was the highest wall, where someone I didn't know offered me their leg to step up on to get started after I didn't make it on a couple of attempts (I apologized for the pain inflicted with my trail treads and weight but she was a tough chick and waved it off). Others on the team did help each other here and there as needed with a boost or a hand. I'm not sure what all happened at the back of the pack where we had some people who really had a harder time with a lot of obstacles but I'm sure the trainers on our team were really helping them.
I personally wouldn't have enjoyed doing it by myself this first time especially, as the encouragement and support was the best part for me, but it would have been totally possible to perform about the same on my own for sure. Volunteers were really helpful and encouraging as well, they gave out lots of tips and especially at some of the toughest ones were cheering and offering advice and lots of "keep going" while you were doing it. They just can't physically help you. I'm sure you could have fun and you can definitely do the obstacles on your own.
@7lenny7 I think you would love this particular one with your love of the snow and challenging trails! MFP monthly challenge team!
@ContraryMaryMary nice award! Congrats!5 -
@elise4270 not sure if it's on Netflix or where, but have you seen the series Dead Like Me? Funny and a bit dark as the characters are dead and work as grim reapers. Highly recommend.2
-
Thanks @katharmonic ! I’ll look for it. I started Dark, I like it. I just can’t stay awake for very long. Least the Netflix binge will last longer that way.0
-
Thanks to everyone who contributed an embarrassing fall story! Made me feel better about mine and made me smile, except for the ones that resulted in injuries2

I’ve been run/walking lately and have realized that I kind of like it! I may stick to it even when I’m recovered. Today’s run was meh.

Today's run was awesome! It was perfect running weather. I really didn't want to get up this morning after losing an hour sleep. I always say I will go to bed early on daylight savings time, but I never do. But I was so glad that I got up and went. It was about 52F, not too windy. It was kind of cloudy, but in a pretty way streaked with blue sky as the sun came up. I ran 9 miles and felt like I could go forever. Then when I got home and was getting ready for church it started raining and has been cloudy and colder and rainy all day long. I was so glad I got to see the pretty part of the day. Runs like this are why I love running so much.
@katharmonic Congrats on your Spartan race! Sounds like you had a lot of fun.
@ContraryMaryMary Nice beer glass!
@amymoreorless Sounds like a tough race. Congrats on getting it done.
@Elise4270 Have you watched Stranger Things?
