Is anyone else repeatedly refreshing Twitter feeds to find out what is going on in the Barkley Marathon even though we are still only 3 loops in and another 30ish possible hours to go? (Sounds like hell conditions there)0

That actually got a laugh out of me!

As much as I'd love to run 8.5 today to meet my goal for the month, the pain in both Achilles, not enough to be a concern, but enough to listen to, tell me it would be a dumb thing to do. I'll spend an hour doing core work tonight and let my tendons recover. Perhaps I'll run tomorrow on what would normally be a rest day.
In any event, it was a great month.
I had my longest training run ever, at 26.4 miles.
I had weekly totals of 40+ miles three times. I only three of those all of last year.
I had my largest monthly total in 23 months.
All in spite of having an 11 day stretch with only 2 runs due to being sick and work demands.

As I am currently going through a bit of achilles tendonopathy I empathise totally, and may I recommend you do a few calf raises off a step - try both straight leg and bent leg, raise very slowly until you feel the achilles working and in the right spot it will actually give you relief (depending on where the pain is either the straight or bent will work for you). When you find that spot, hold for 15 seconds. Do other side. Repeat. And again. Magic.2 -

Finished up the month with a treadmill run - stupid weather changed over from rain to snow this morning and I'm over it. I spent most of the day in my office at work and then headed to the gym for an end of day run and some upper arm and back work. Then I sat in the sauna for a few and contemplated escaping to a warm beach somewhere instead of going back to work tomorrow.
94 miles for the month is not too bad - I really didn't set a mileage goal this month, not being sure how things would go recovering from a back injury in February and missing 10 days of running, having to miss a half marathon, and having really low total mileage due to that. It was certainly feeling tough at the time. I scrolled back and found my post toward the beginning of this thread and I said "I guess my goal right now is to get back to regular running and feeling good about it. Assuming I go ahead with the Spartan race next weekend - survive and have some fun with that." I would say all of that was accomplished. Even though some of the runs were pretty short, I ran 26 days of the month and I got back up to at least a 9 mile long run at the end. My coach always preaches consistency over quantity. And I did indeed survive the Spartan race and it was a ton of fun. So, success!
Great job this month, I see lots of great totals and accomplishments.10 -

I finished March with 7.35 miles today for a total of 92.37 miles for the month. I got to try out my new shoes today and they seemed pretty good.It was a nice run. I was taking a cutback week, so only ran 7 miles. I thought it was good to rest my feet some. I've decided that part of my achy feet problem was not just my running shoes, but a pair of daily shoes that I've been wearing. I guess I just need new shoes all around. I'm glad I got new running shoes. I did need them and I think they will make a big difference. I guess March is in the books now and it is on to April. I will have to think about my goal for April. See you all over there!
2019 races:
2/2/19: Catch the Groundhog Half Marathon - PR 2:15:17
5/18/19: Run for 57th AHC Half Marathon6 -
Plan today was 20 miles, but I missed a turn and discovered it quickly... still a bit over as a result. - 20.29 miles
Did not meet goal this month, but was also out for nearly 2 weeks due to an unexpected medical issue and surgery recovery. I feel like I'm recovering well, and while I am not happy with pace yet (when will I ever be?!), I believe I will be able to finish the 3 races in April:
4/6 - Hogeye Marathon - Springdale, AR
4/13 - Flint Hills Trail Marathon - Manhattan, KS
4/20 - Double Chubb 50K - Eureka, MO7 -

A small excursion into the mountains with the girlfriend yesterday. Didn't use my watch so I have no idea how far we went, but we were moving for about 3 hours. I'm gonna say it's 10km and call it a month. It was pretty steep in places but the view was great.
Hopefully better luck with running next month.
@amirahdaboss That looks awful! Hope you're ok and the back get better quickly.
@lporter229 Something similar happened to me once, and that's not something I'd wish on anyone. Good thinking on getting some dry clothes on. Lucky you didn't get hypothermia in those conditions!
Speaking of which, a friend of mine had a bit of a scare a few days ago. He's a really fit person and a pretty good triathlete (his marathon PR is about 2:57) and set out to ride a century last week. The first 50km were no problem. But as he turned back the wind picked up and he ended up riding into strong headwinds for more than an hour. 2km away from home, he got off his bike and sat down by the side of the road. His quads were killing him and he just couldn't control his legs. After about 10 minutes of sitting, he managed to get back on his bike and ride home at a snail's pace.
First thing he did after going in the door was to lie down on the bed, grab his quads and howl for a bit (nobody else was home). After a while, he came back to his senses, took off all his wet clothing and wrapped himself in some blankets. Half an hour later, he was feeling almost back to normal. Not even his quads hurt anymore.
Moral of the story: sometimes hypothermia takes on strange symptoms.
@amymoreorless great job on your back to back! I'm probably going to start needing those sometime next year...
Congrats to all who made their goals and all who got up and moved. See y'all next month!7 -
@noblsheep The worst I have seen for hypothermia was once when my brother and I were backpacking in Nov. a few years back. Daytime temps were single digits Fahrenheit, night was colder particularly with clear skies. He didn't have very good gear. He kept getting up to pee every 5-10 min. (Shunting is a sign of hypothermia, as our bodies try to get rid of water before slowing down and going into "hibernation"). This means he was spending a lot of time outside the sleeping bag anyway. It was a bad situation and we ended up packing up and hiking out to the car in the middle of the night. Fortunately it was only a few miles away. That could've ended much worse.5

Just getting in here under the wire! I beat my goal by 10 miles, so that was fun! My parents came to town for a long weekend and we (& kids & dog!) went up to the mountains. It was all pretty relaxed so I got two runs in, mostly on schedule (Friday & Sunday instead of Thursday and Saturday). Today’s 8 miles were especially gorgeous—blue sky and fresh snow on the surrounding mountains..

After a hectic week (injury and the arrival of my new nephew!) I will not be able to play catch up with this thread! So well done to everyone who ran last week and hope everyone is ok!
Because of said injury I did not run last week so technically ended March on the 21st.
04Mar - 1.8 miles (treadmill)
07Mar - 1.6 miles (treadmill)
08Mar - 2 miles (treadmill)
11Mar - 2 miles (treadmill)

21Mar - 2 miles (treadmill)
22Mar - 0 miles - did just over 4 miles on a stationary bike instead.
So my total for March was 25.25 miles of 40.
Right, time to go find the April thread...7 -
Wanted to log my last run and ride even though it's April.
Beat my goal, yay!
Yesterday was Tour de Cure and it was pretty good except for at mile 55 or so when I started struggling. Couldn't keep up with my group and felt like I had nothing left. Then a mile or two later someone that passed me said I had a flat. Once I got that changed the remaining 11 miles was easy. Of course, I had a 20 minute rest while I drank and ate and husband slaved over the tire changing. I always say to him, you got me into this cycling, you are my mechanic.

@simcon1 Gorgeous place to run!!! And, congrats on going over your goal!
@ddmom0811 Having a flat, I'm surprised you could go at all. Good that you got a little break and continued on. Great job on surpassing your goal.
@kgirlhart Love the new shoes. Hope they help your feet.3 -
just a quick run yesterday with speed demon. my legs felt a bit heavy so i took it nice and slow. it took a while for speed demon to warm up as well. warm up might not be the right phrase. it was colder than i thought and the wind just bit into me. but it was still nice to get out. i saw my first bluebird. i knew we had them in our area but i have never seen them. (didn't get a picture.)
so we'll see how the marathon goes next saturday. i really could have used a little more training. we'll see.
speed demon hasn't gotten out much due to bad weather, subzero temps, iced over trails and roads and sidewalks, long runs so she didn't seem thrilled when we started but she was all smiles when we finished.dirty looks

Better late than never!

- 17 fitnessblender workouts

March Weekly Miles
GOAL: 140 miles
03/02 - 13.25
03/09 - 29.91
03/16 - 40.53
03/23 - 38.83
03/30 - 25.67
03/31 - 03.96
TOTAL: 152.15 miles
I exceeded my goal and I exceeded my expectations for the 10K race on Sat. My previous 10K PR was 52:01 and I felt I could slide in under 50 minutes. I knew the race ended on an incline the last mile, so I went out a bit faster the first couple miles to build a cushion, but then pretty much kept up that pace throughout and ended up with a new PR of 48:06, so almost 4 minutes off the previous PR. This was good enough for 1st in age group out of 6 and 16th overall out of 184.

Wow! I got way behind in my posting. For starters, my cat's biopsy came back benign. She has to go back in three months for a check up, but the DR called me with the results and said it's a fatty tumor and I have to keep my eye on it. A few days later my parents came for a visit. My Dad just finished four rounds of chemo and they are in the process of moving from the Northeast to the Southeast so they have a lot going on. As a result, I am watching one of their cats for a few weeks since she was starting to stress with the packing and such. I'm so happy to have two kitty cats again in my life.
As far as running, I am progressing nicely with speedwork being my focus right now. I finished March with 56.8 miles logged. I didn't run at all the first ten days of the month and climbed back on the horse for the second half.
I'm sorry it's hard for me to keep up with this thread. So many of you commented about me putting my one cat down and sending well wishes for my other cat's biopsy. By the time I get around to reading this thread, it's 60 pages long practically. But I appreciate all of you.

No worries @Lazy_Bones_1985 . Lovely thing about the group, it’s all here when you have the chance to catch up. Really glad your second cat has company and it’s just a lipoma. We have a cat that has one on his side. I’m sure he bothered to get himself pelted with a bb at some point. It can form also with an injury. I had one removed from the back of my forearm after traumatically whacking it on a door knob, more than once.
Best wishes for your parents too. May their move go well and health improve. We have 4 cats. One I can do without, he has bad habits and we’re probably going to talk to the vet about medication. I understand having more than one about.
Thanks for the birthday wishes.0
