March 2019 Monthly Running Challenge

Thank you for all the 'welcome backs'!
I had kind of a funny run today. I was really in the mood to get out at lunch to run but I was also feeling completely and utterly wiped out (spoiler alert - realized afterwards that it was bc that lovely monthly visitor was returning ). So, I headed out just planning to grind through 3 miles. As I was about 0.2 of a mile from my turnaround point a really good friend of mine from work, along with another coworker, drove past and shouted cheerfully, loudly, and encouragingly out the window at me. Something about that gave me a sudden Mario Bros power-up feeling and I decided in that instant that I was NOT turning around and would continue on another 1/2 mile and then turn around! So, I ended up with a whole extra mile above what was planned. It was awesome! But now all afternoon I've been sitting at my desk wanting a nap
@7lenny7 - I've def done that a time or too and if it means you're an *kitten* then I am too.
Happy Friday!!!13 -
I planned least night to run with my running club (my annual run with them...) - Plan A was to finish work bang on time, drive home, then run 2 miles to meet them, run the 5 mile run, then 2 miles home. Plan B was drive home, grab my stuff (because I didn’t take it to work with me) and drive to meet the club.
Plan C happened. - postpone the run until the next day and get a good nights sleep!!!
So tonight I went out straight from work, aiming for 7 miles as I won’t get a long run at the weekend (Mothering Sunday and visiting my folks). I used a 4minute run/30second Walk interval. I think that’s roughly the right mix - might stretch it to 5 or 6 minutes but it felt good. Made it back to my car just before sunset.
Happy weekend and racing people who are!10 -

Yesterday a run did not happen due to work craziness and general feelings of exhaustion. Today I packed for both inside and outside running options as it was raining and chilly this morning. But it turned out to be sunny and right around 50 when I left work so I went with the outside option, and ended up being a little overdressed for it.
I'm struggling a bit with running these days, just getting to 30 minutes is tough most days. And it still was today, but my pace was quite a bit better outside than on the treadmill. It's getting to be time to start to ramp up mileage a bit to train for spring races and right now that seems a little daunting. Hopefully I'll get there gradually and I'm sure I'll feel a lot better when the work stress not so high in a couple of weeks.

Cold, raining, and dreary out today, so I just got a few quick miles in on the treadmill.
4.05 miles

Also on that run I honestly saw @PastorVincent's honest to God doppleganger! I've seen this guy before, but always from behind. Yesterday I happened to be running the opposite direction, and I could have sworn it was him (based on his profile pic and product reviews he has posted). They say everyone has one.
This post is useless with out pictures.

@7lenny7 - I have done that a few times myself so I might be an *kitten* too. I have even done it when I have been still on the sidewalk and getting ready to step off the curb. It is also why I always have Hobbes sit before I step off just in case he might jump out in front of me and get hit. I also once banged on the front fender of a car that almost hit me as I was crossing in the cross walk. I hope it makes people change and look more but I am not convinced. They just get complacent and think no one is ever there. Our city also installed GIANT stop signs because it was such a problem. Cyclists have been hit with at least one killed and lots of kids come that way from school so I just don't know why they don't put a light in. Hope the jacket was still there when you went back. I would have called and asked them to put it aside for me.
I was feeling queasy since yesterday afternoon and after I ate my pre-run toast, banana and PB. I suspect it was a bit of food poisoning, from my breakfast out yesterday, based on the way it came on and the symptoms. I didn't think I was going to be able to run today so I waited and had some dried ginger hoping it would settle down. I figured I could give it a try and worse case come back home but it was gorgeous out and I felt ok. Not quite 60F with a breeze and a few puffy clouds. I changed my run/walk intervals again, this time to 5min run and 1min walk which seemed to work perfectly. I am hoping to get to maybe 30secs walk for the HM or I will leave it at a minute depending on how I feel as it gets closer. The plan for today was for 4 miles easy, run pace around 12 for the run intervals for me... got in 4.2mi but had to fight to keep the pace on the run intervals down. I just don't seem to be able to run at a 12 min pace very well. I guess my easy pace is closer to 11 or 11:30 because that is where I seem to always end up. I have a long run tomorrow of 8 miles and will keep to the 5x1 intervals for it too.

So, sounds like he has run A LOT but probably not 2000:

*sigh* Saw that many outlets were carrying the story, and Guniess and all that, but did not think to check there before sharing. Need to remember them.3 -
@7lenny7 Not only are you NOT the kitten, your story beautifully illustrates both sides of the same point: 1) as a driver, don’t drive into crosswalks or around traffic blindly, and 2) as a runner or biker, never assume drivers see you or that even if they do see you, they will give you the right of way. Act as though all people on the road are intentionally out to murder you with their cars, and you will be much safer.
5 miles on trails at WC Johnson, where hooray hooray the trails were dry for a change! It’s been months since I finished a trail run without having to change out of my muddy shoes before I got back in the car.
When I got dressed today it was uncomfortably warm, so I dug up my summer running shorts, which have been packed away since last autumn. The sun went behind clouds before I reached the park, and I was worried I would wind up underdressed, but nope, temperature in the mid 70s. With a nice stiff breeze and overcast sky it was pleasant.
Spent all yesterday in the Apple store getting my mom set up with a new phone and watch that auto detects falls and irregular heart rate and alerts 911 and her contact list if something happens and she doesn’t cancel the alert. So far my mom is active and healthy, knock wood, but she’s in her 80s and works with horses every morning, alone, on a farm miles from civilization. She is rightly nervous that something might happen, and this gives her a layer of reassurance. Anyway as a result of running errands with her, no workout for me yesterday, which is just as well since my legs today feel beat up. I needed the extra rest day.
Nice easy run today, with a sprint at the end. We finished our sprint right as another runner was trundling down the boardwalk in front of us, so we ended up barreling past him at top speed shouting “On your left!” I believe he thought we were out of our tiny minds.7 -
I worked out with a friend today, and did a mile as a cardio warm up before strength training. Pretty sure this is gonna be my last run for the month.
So I leave the gym and start driving home when some *kitten* teenager who isn’t paying attention rams into my car while I’m stopped at a red light. He hit me so hard I slammed into the car stopped in front of me and it ultimately resulted in a 4 car pileup. Luckily I escaped with minimal injuries, but my back is killing me so I doubt I will be working out for at least a few days. Heading to the ER to get the back checked out tomorrow morning.

@amirahdaboss Whoa!! That looks awful! Hopefully you aren't super injured, but I'll bet you'll be super sore for the next week or so.0
-
@amirahdaboss yikes! Glad you're more or less ok, hope the aches and pains don't last too long!
Re: squirrels... when I was a child my dad lived in a 3rd floor apartment. I remember spending hours sitting by the kitchen window watching a squirrel that would run up a tree across the road, jump onto the roof of a house, run along the top then throw himself off the end into a huge bush in the garden. Down and back round again, he'd go round and round for hours on end.
Tomorrow's race got cancelled because it's supposed to rain (welcome to Spain lol) so I'm off to do my long run as soon as I swallow this coffee. So glad I mentioned the run-walk thing, I feel much less of a weirdo now people are coming out of the closet!
10 -
Aaaaaaand I'm home again. 7 long, slow, heavenly kilometres. Longest I've run since before xmas and injury. The 2 min run/30 sec walk intervals mostly worked great, except I think I zoned out watching the waves crash and listening to my music somewhere in there and missed a couple of walks :-D
I may well hurt tomorrow, though, legs were still a little tender from the physio's ministrations on Thursday and they feel tight now. Must remember to stretch as much as I can today.
Goal for March was 40km, today put me at 50km. Yay! Time to start planning April's goal, will be a small one though as we're off for a 10 day hiking holiday over the Easter break and as I'll be walking around 20km a day I won't be running!
11 -
Yikes @amirahda, that looks terrible. I’m glad you’re ok. And hope the back settles down quickly!!0
-
@amirahdaboss Whoa! I audibly remarked when I saw your pictures; that looks awful! I hope your back isn't seriously injured!0
-
@amirahdaboss YUCK!!! Hopefully everyone is okay!0
-
@amirahdaboss wow, glad you're mostly ok! Hope your back heals quickly!0
-
@amirahdaboss woah, from the picture it is amazing that you weren't seriously hurt. Hope you heal quickly. And I would bet money that kid was on his phone 😠
When will people learn?!0 -
@amirahdaboss Sorry about your accident. I hope your back is okay and it isn't anything serious. Kudos for going to the ER to make sure.
@rheddmobile Sounds like a great set-up for your mom. I'd say it was a day well spent.
And, regarding squirrels, I usually think they are auditioning for a low budget horror movie.....running down the middle of the road when there are woods on both sides that would shield them from the car that is "chasing" them.3 -

@amirahdaboss - I second what everyone else has said, wow! I am SO glad you were not seriously injured! Did the air bag deploy? That is my biggest fear actually because I am so short and have to have the seat so close to reach the pedals it puts me so close to the steering wheel. I think you will be pretty sore for a while but I hope your back is ok!
@rheddmobile - I didn't know that Apple had an iPhone that could do all of that. We got our elderly neighbor (also in her 80s) an alert thingy after a fall outside where she was injured and only found because a neighbor's dog kept barking. She just has to push a button and it notifies a central location who contacts us as well as the police. She has also an iPhone but doesn't carry it around with her and when asked about her alert she has no idea where she left it... If your mom is concerned though, hopefully she will keep her phone with her at all times. I may look into getting our friend those features on her phone as she is more likely to have it than an alert she put 'somewhere'.
ETA - just reread your post and realized it is the Apple Watch phone combo so she doesn't likely have to do anything for the alert to work other than have the watch on and the phone somewhere nearby. Pretty cool!
Squirrels - we have a wall outside my home/office window and the squirrels run up and down it all day long. As do the cats and the hawks fly right over it... I am sure one of these days a hungry cat or hawk is going to snatch one of those squirrels right off the wall!2 -

Squirrels: not a fan, they like to leap over from the tree onto my bird feeder and tip it sideways, pour it onto the ground, then stuff it all in their pouches and hoard it. My yard doesn’t really allow for a feeder not within jumping reach of a tree - since a squirrel can jump quite some distance - and they can empty one in about half an hour.
@amirahdaboss hoping your back isn’t injured! That looks terrible, yikes.
Re: old people and the Apple Watch: the new series 4 has a fall detection algorithm, which according to consumer testing I’ve looked at, works pretty well as far as detecting actual falls and not just rapid movements. If a fall is detected, it waits fifteen seconds for the person to move, and if they don’t move it pops up a message saying, “You have fallen, are you okay?” If no answer it starts a countdown, which can be cancelled by a finger tap. If not cancelled it calls 911 and the person’s contact list. If the person needs to call 911 at any time, there’s a button on the side to hold. My mom took a class yesterday in how to use her watch and is still confused but she is going back for a second class. Which leaves two issues - she is concerned about not wearing it while the battery charges, and she is worried she will forget to mute it when she is at the symphony. We’re hoping this extends her ability to live safely in her current circumstances. We moved in with her for a while when my father was in his last illness, and will do it again if we have to, but it wasn’t ideal for anyone!3 -
@amirahdaboss wow, I'm glad you're okay, and hope you're really okay, if that makes sense.
@7lenny7 Good job being dramatic!
I was riding my bike today, was exactly where I was supposed to be, visibility was good and I had my bright-green backpack on, was at a decent speed going downhill, but apparently someone came up on me and changed lanes suddenly to pass me, without realizing there were already other cars in that lane. Screeching tires, but they avoided a collision and I get to live another day.
I took the sidewalk through that spot on the way home. I'd rather risk paying a fine than risk my life going up that busy hill in traffic at my cycling speed.7 -
This is the first time I've gone out on a run that was not a c25k session. It was great. I kept with the 5min/30sec run/walk interval and it worked really well.
I think I need new running shoes. On my run today my right foot, just like exactly what happened when I was running my 5k, fell asleep but not before I felt a twinge in my knee and pain in my shins. My shoe wasn't tied tightly, so that's not the problem. I've run and walked on and off with these shoes, which I got properly fitted for, for over 3 years so it is probably time for a change.

@amirahdaboss Wow, that looks like quite an accident. Is that your car? I hope you and everyone involved are okay. I also hope that kid learned a lesson since nobody was seriously hurt.
This morning's run...ugh! The run part was not terrible, it's what transpired afterwards that made it a terrible start to my day. I met my run group at 7:30 at a shopping plaza that we run from on occasion because the area is less hilly than our normal routes and it's easy to get more miles in. The marathon group is training for the Flying Pig and they were doing their first 20, which was 2 loops of a 10 mile route. Since I am in my taper and only wanted 13-14, I did most of the first loop with them, but shot off at around mile 9 to do a loop around a lake in a park and then head back to the start in the opposite direction. It was raining lightly for most of the run, but around mile 9 it began to pour. I had waffled back and forth on clothing and finally opted for shorts and a short sleeve shirt and gloves, which appeared to be a good choice until this point. I was running into the rain and it was cold and stinging my arms and legs. I was working on another loop around the lake when I realized that I had left my keys in the key drop bag and the keeper of the keys was heading out for lap number two and I had no idea where the keys were. I would have to head back and hopefully run into them or I was screwed. I did run into the group heading out for their second loop and Paul the key keeper told me they were in his car and the spare key was in the rear wheel well (at least that's what I heard). I got back to the parking lot about a mile short of my plan and was really tempted to stop given the miserable rain, but decided that would leave me feeling regretful, so I continued on for about 14 total miles.
I was so glad to get back to my car. I wanted to get my towel and dry shirt and get home to a nice hot shower. Except I went to get the key for Paul's car and it was not there. I couldn't believe it. I spent at least 10 minutes looking in all four wheel wells and under the car and everywhere I could think of and I could not find the key. At this point, I was soaking wet and shivering like crazy. this was going to be a disaster as I had at least an hour or more to wait for their return. I finally remembered that I had a 20 stashed in my hand held, so I went across the parking lot to Panera, dried off with some paper towels and ordered a latte. I was shaking so badly that I couldn't even drink it. So I decided to walk about a half mile over to Target and see if I could find a shirt for the $15 that I had left. I was luckily able to find a nice fleece sweatshirt on clearance for $10, so I bought it, then went to the bathroom and removed my wet shirt and bra and put on the dry shirt. However, I was worried that I would miss the group if I didn't head back, so I had to head back out into the rain (now steady, but not as hard). I went back over to the parking lot and stood against the building with an overhang that helped to shield me a bit from the rain. I waited about 40 minutes before they got back because they decided to make a little stop for shelter. I was shivering so badly that my back is aching like crazy from shaking. When they returned, Paul said that the key was under his rear tire. What? Turns out it was not a legit car key like one would expect, but a flat old school kind of key, which happened to be black. I would have never found it. I didn't hang around very long to congratulate everyone on knocking out their 20 miles in such crappy weather because I was irritated ( not sure if at him or myself) and just ready to get home. That hot shower felt so good, but dang is my back hurting!
Oh, and to top it all off, I'm not sure, how, when or where it happened, but there is goose poop on the top of my shoe! Tomorrow's run will be a good one16 -
@polskagirl01 Glad everyone avoided a collision and you lived to see another day. Lots of scary close calls with this group lately. Everyone be extra careful out there!
@lporter229 That sounds like an awful experience. Glad you were able to at least get a dry sweatshirt. I'm really sorry, but I laughed at the goose poop on the top of your shoe...trying to imagine how that could happen and you not notice.1 -
@lporter229 ugggh, glad you finally got that hot shower! I hope your next run makes up for this one being yucky afterwards.0
