Wake up at 4:45 am ... drive 20 minutes out the Brushy Creek Trail .... run 18 miles with a friend ... rush home and shower/shovel food in my face .... rush to work and do a huge event with tons of needy people that require a LOT of people-ing .... get home and finally get to sit down... realize I came home to a needy and sick spouse...
Well, that was fun. I am glad I decided to sign up for a double marathon. Let’s do the “get up at 4:45 am and run...exhaustion...rush to work and “people” a lot” thing again tomorrow. 🙄
Now if you guys will excuse me, I have to go devour “all the things” and collapse in exhaustion. So I can get up at 4:45 am tomorrow...

Ugh @lporter229 that sounds like a miserable experience. Hope you are warmed up by now!
Makes my run sound like a nice walk in the park.
13.1 this afternoon. Winter decided to blow back into town today..literally (50F 25mph wind/40mph gusts). This of course also meant the return of white fingers (yes mom, I had gloves). That awful wind made my easy pace seem hard.
Oh well, was a good workout.
So did I miss the post about the April Challenge?7 -

A decent long run finally - the kind of temps where you are slightly chilly to start but perfect for running, and the rain held off other than a few sprinkles. The wind off the lake was not too bad except at the far end where we turned around, and then it was mainly behind us. Good company kept it easy and I managed a little longer than I planned.
I've done something probably very stupid. Remember how I had a lot of fun doing the Winter Sprint Spartan a few weeks ago? Well, guess who just signed up for a much longer version of that. My team is doing a Beast in New Jersey on April 27 - which is 13+ miles and 25+ obstacles. I was trying to resist but my fear of missing out on the fun won out over my fear of dying a painful burpee death for a moment and here I am. One of my strength training group friends signed up and I had said I would do it if she did, but totally didn't think she would Time to double up on the upper body work!
@amirahdaboss such a scary scene, so glad you are ok.
Edited to add to @amymoreorless that sounds exhausting! I had to go to work after my run today and I felt sorry for myself, and all I had to do was sit and write at my computer. No people-ing. I hope you get lots of sleep tonight and good luck with the early morning tomorrow. I'm curious about your approach to training for the double marathon - I'm planning a double half marathon and am not sure how I'm going to do that, I can't quite get a grip on thinking of two marathons in a row!8 -
@amymoreorless That sounds exhausting. I hope you get a good nights rest and they your hubby gets to feeling better soon. Good luck tomorrow.
@katharmonic Sounds like a good run this morning. Good luck with the BEAST. Don't you hate it when you tell someone you'll do something if they do and then, they go and do it!!!2 -
@amirahdaboss yikes!!! That looks like it could have been pretty bad. I hope you recovery quickly. Speaking of car accidents I wonder how @workaholic_nurse is doing.
@lporter229 yuck! That sounds like a miserable experience, but on the upside, it sounds like a successful run.
@amymoreorless you sure have a full day. I hope you find some quality "me" time...other than the run.
@eleanorhawkins all right!!! Glad your run was heavenly!
@scott6255 nice run, in spite of the wind! I had to deal with strong winds today, but not like that.
@polskagirl01 Good outcome. I hope you live another bunches and bunches of days.

Despite the fact that I had a hard time completing a 30 min walk, I went ahead and changed clothes and immediately went out for a 3.5 mile run. Needless to say, it was HARD. Not sure what it was today, but I just couldn't breath. I guess it could be pollen in the air. Plus, it was 75°F today, much warmer than it has been. Anyway, I went with my run/walk for 4min/1min and it worked pretty good until mile 3. Then, I just couldn't make it up a couple of hills and had to stop for an extra minute of walking. Still, I managed finish in 44:35 for a 12:44 average pace. Slow, but almost 2 minutes faster than I did the same distance last week. Plus, my Garmin gave me a PB on a 5K. I guess that's a win.
This was my last run of the month, for a total of 17.47 miles. I guess that's not too bad considering that this month was froth with sickness, a week away for a funeral, and just being afraid to run.7 -
I think I need new running shoes. On my run today my right foot, just like exactly what happened when I was running my 5k, fell asleep but not before I felt a twinge in my knee and pain in my shins. My shoe wasn't tied tightly, so that's not the problem. I've run and walked on and off with these shoes, which I got properly fitted for, for over 3 years so it is probably time for a change.
If the shoes have THREE YEARS of running on them, then, yes, they are highly suspect at this point.

I'm wore out, but very content right now. I had a fabulous run.
26.4 miles of gravel road running, 1500' vertical gain which included 4 big hill repeats, in 4:40, on 740 calories and 48 ounces of liquid. My longest training run by over a mile. I'm very pleased with not only my pace, but the fact that i was able to hold it fairly even, except on the big hills. My first 20 miles had a 75 percentile pace* of 9:35 and my last 6 miles had a 75% pace of 9:56. Because of the distance, Kody stayed home.
Weather was decent. Good in that it was 30F and sunny, bad because we had winds of 17mph gusting to 25mph. Perfect for a low sweat run, but when I had a headwind, it was biting.
This was a new route for me and consisted of a 7.25 mile loop which started in the river valley and immediately climbed up to the upland farms. From the start you could go two ways. One was a half mile stretch of 7.5% grade, and the other was 3/4 mile stretch with 5% grade. The rest was fairly flat rolling gravel farm roads.
My plan was to run three loops with a hill repeat in each direction between loops. (4 hill repeats total). In the first loop I had 200 calories of Tailwind and an Aldi Stroopwaffle. The second loop was the same and the third loop was just a little water. In the last couple of miles I could start to feel some pain in my tendon repair site. Not enough to scare me, but more than I like to feel. Thankfully the pain has pretty much subsided now, 4 hours later.
Now I just want to eat all the foods. My wife and I are just about to go out brewery hopping. I'm hopping she drives.
I did think to bring a beer with me so I can reward myself after the run
@Elise4270 I did buy the jacket!
Just 8.5 miles to reach my March goal. I'll definitely get out tomorrow to take Kody running, but I"m not sure if I'll get that far. Pain will be my guide.

@lporter229 I'd be fuming. At them and myself. Hugs and hope you are OK now you've (hopefully) warmed up!
I did a nice gentle 12k today. Wasn't sure how it would go as this is the longest run since my shin splints last month. I know I've actually built up properly so I wasn't worried. It was just a lot of hills when I'm usually running relatively flat lol.
Felt great now im hungry for all the things! Spending the rest of my Sunday deep cleaning our house ahead of listing it later this week.
March goal 100km. I achieved 114! Woo hoo!
My goal for April will be 150km. A bit more than the recommended increase but I'm doing a challenge and that's the goal.

Well, I wasn't do a large amount of running in them, so I wasn't putting a lot of miles on them on a regular basis. I did get a new pair of Asics today. Sales person thought I should also get some compression socks, but they didn't have the style of sock that I liked, so I'll get them at another store and see how it feels.1 -
@lporter229 I missed your story before, but that sounds awful and so annoying. I hope you are all warmed up now.
@7lenny7 sounds like you had a great run. Gravel road running sounds hard though - I'm assuming it was pretty fine gravel? Hope you are stuffing your face with food and beer and being driven around!
@quilteryoyo sorry you had a hard run. Take it easy! I'm glad the walk/run intervals are helping though.
Everybody's mentioning being so hungry and wanting to eat everything after running today - same here and I ate a huge amount of food from the Mediterranean restaurant by my house but feel like I could still eat more.1 -
@7lenny7 Well done!0
-
@rheddmobile - I have an Apple Watch 4 but had no idea those options were available. On the other hand I really don't need them either. As far as charging is concerned the watch actually charges pretty quickly. I charge mine typically when I am in the shower but she could charge it during a quiet time, when she is eating dinner or watching TV. If the watch is set up to mirror her phone if she mutes her phone or puts it on vibrate her watch should do the same. She can put her hand over the watch face and that will mute it as well if it goes of unexpectedly.
@polskagirl01 - so glad you were not hit and that the drivers all avoided each other too! Some people are just dumb when they get behind the wheel of a car!
@taxgirl1 - after 3 years even if your shoes haven't hit a mileage end of life, they also dry out and the cushioning is not as supportive as it should be. Glad you got new shoes!
@lporter229 - oh nothing worse than being stuck outside cold and wet! I bet that shower was amazing! Hope you are warmed up and your back is feeling better!
@amymoreorless - I can't imagine being able to run 18 miles and then work all day on my feet. Then again maybe having that run helped you to deal with all the needy people! What kind of work do you do?
@Scott6255 and @7lenny7 - awesome windy long runs!!
ETA - That is an awesome jacket @7lenny7! Glad they still had it when you went back!!
So I went out this morning for an 8 mile long run and ended up with about 8.7. Initially about a quarter mile out Strava showed -4 miles for my distance, whattt?? So I stopped and restarted. It kept getting stuck at x.8 miles and stayed at 4.8 forever then jumped to 6 miles and said I completed it in 6 mins LOL, then went back to 5.8. The splits and all look correct so no clue what was the issue... Strava shows 8.48 miles so I added in .22 for my lost bit. The 5/1 intervals worked great until around mile 6 or 7 and I ended up taking an extra walk break midway in some of the run intervals.
It was 65 when I started out and 75 at the end but the hot Santa Ana winds that were supposed to hit today and drive up temps never came and I was so thankful they didn't.
I haven't run this far since the middle of last September so I seem to be making progress and I seem to be getting used to the warmer temps. I am a bit concerned about next Saturday's long run that is 8 miles again with 4 at tempo. Hopefully my legs will be up to it. After that there seems to be multiple longer runs each week in the guise of speed work or 8 miles hills 8 miles easy...
This is my last run for the month and I exceeded my stretch goal by a couple miles. This was also my highest mileage month since last September!

@7lenny7 Great run! I love the jacket.
Tonight, I decided I finally had time to download Garmin Express on my computer. (It takes a while due to living in a rural area with a slow internet connection.) When I logged in I was amazed to see that the last time I had connected to Gamin Connect - with my old Garmin, was March 30, 2013. Not only was that a coincidence, but on that day I had run 4 miles with a pace of 12:46 min/mile. Today's pace was 12:44 min/mile. Sort of eerie.9 -
@lporter229 What an awful experience! I never knew why I was such a control freak as to always take my car key with me while running (unless starting from home), but now you've explained why I do that. When I got a key with electronics and a battery in it for locking/unlocking the door, I just started putting in in a baggie to protect it from sweat.
I had a similar, though much less severe, experience after the 2017 USATF Masters 8K. I had given my drop bag to a team mate's wife to watch, and finding her after the race was hard while I was cold. The next year, I used a more formal drop bag procedure.6 -
My schedule this week got all messed up. I’m speaking at a conference this weekend so I had to move a few things around. I skipped one run this week because of traveling and ended up doing my long run today. I’m in Austin, which is a really great city for running. I went to the rock climbing gym this morning and ran into a friend I hadn’t seen since we lived here. I climbed with them for a few hours then went and grabbed lunch. After heading back to the hotel I change clothes and headed out to a trail around the lake in the city. The wind was picking up and the temperature was dropping while I was out, but it was still pretty nice. I ran a little over 7 miles, more quickly than I intended. Probably because it was cool and the nice trails keep my legs from feeling worn out on those long runs. So between climbing in the morning and running in the afternoon, I was ravenous like everybody else. I met up with another friend for dinner for pizza! So good! After some stretching and a little rolling, now I’m ready for bed and I’m pretty sure I’m going to sleep very hard.
And the run today got me to my goal for the month! Wasn’t sure I was going to squeak that one out.

Since tomorrow is April I created the new thread for us...
https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10735956/april-2019-monthly-running-challenge8 -
@martaindale sounds like a great day with rock climbing and running! I was in Austin in early April last year and it was so great for running. I'm going to the same conference soon but this year it is San Diego and I'm a little sad not to go back to Austin. Not that San Diego is not a nice place, but I'd like to spend some more time in Austin.
I can't believe tomorrow is April. I'm frankly dreading the first half of the month, it will be a real challenge of time management and mental and physical fatigue - so I will need to evaluate what my goals are going to be running-wise. I'll wander over to that thread today and see what I come up with as well as update on my end of March totals here later.
Have a good last day of March everyone.6 -

No running or strength yesterday - I stayed up late again Friday night and my hip hurt all day yesterday. I finally decided that a week of hip and/or hamstring pain was enough and made an appointment with the chiropractor tomorrow. I feel like I should really look for a physical therapist, but I'd had good experiences with the chiropractor in the past and honestly don't feel up for adding something else new to my life right now.
I had a panic attack yesterday (first in a good long while) which seemed like a pretty good sign that my brain needs to take priority, so I made an appointment to meet a new therapist on Tuesday. I'm triaging and maybe I'm not doing it perfectly but sometimes just doing something is better than nothing. I would deeply love to be running right now, but I don't want to hurt myself worse so I'm going to err on the side of hypochondriac until I can see the chiropractor tomorrow.
I won't be hitting my stretch goal for the month, but I've got 27.52 miles in the bag already, which is a good bit more than I'd feared, so I'm going to try and be happy with that. I've got almost 200 minutes of low-impact exercise and 53 minutes of stretching this week, too, so that's half of a win. I'll try and get out with the dog a couple of times today and try to let his stupid happy face cheer me up.
The sick kitten is doing a little better - she's eating a bit and hasn't thrown up since at least Thursday. Vet appointment tomorrow AM but hopefully this was a just a GI thing that will never repeat itself again and she'll live to a ripe old 25 or so.12 -
Happy happy joy joy
Clocks went forward this weekend so I gave myself a lie in to not lose too much sleep, and went for a fun post-breakfast.
Set my intervals to 5minutes run 30seconds Walk, but after a short warm up jog, decided to just run the whole thing. Especially as I looked at my pace and by some miracle it seemed to be averaging 10.30. Given that last weeks run was averaging 12.45, this was pretty impressive. The whopping great 11ft elevation gain along the seafront probably did it!!
Lots of runners out - there was a 20mile race on, chatted at an aid station for a while to one of the helpers. Wondered if @benbowers was running it? If so - nice day for it!!
Didn’t quite get the four miles I was aiming for, but really happy with the run in general. And nice to see the sea again.11 -

Next year when you pop in here claiming your December 2019 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
Run at least 4 5k races.
Get under 30:00 and a PR for 5k.
Average at least 135k per month, which would put me over 1,000 miles for the year.
Run the Year Team: Five for Nineteen
Two inches of snow overnight. Trail was snow covered; side streets were a mix of snow, frozen slush, regular slush, and water; but the main road was clear. Garmin tells me this is the farthest I've run in a month since I started keeping accurate track. On to April and race season!!

OMG my legs/feet are sore. How do some of you in this group run the miles you do day after day? I am completely spent after back-to-back 18 miles.
@shanaber I work as a children’s librarian. Yesterday we had a teen summer job and volunteer fair. Over 400 parents and teens plus all the vendors/employers. Lots of people-ing. Today will be better. I only have a story time for kids with special needs and a dyslexia support group for kids & parents to take care of.
@katharmonic A double half would not be too bad to train for. When I signed up for the double marathon, I was very aware that I can’t run for time. Racing two in a row is kind of impossible. Just schedule a few back-to-back long runs at an easy pace. Don’t expect to PR anything. Run for fun! You will do great!
March Goal Miles 150 (& add in trail runs on Friday mornings)/ Miles to Date = 164 miles

Instead of brewery hopping last night we went to a cidery, a distillery, and then a brewery. DH drove, I indulged, and I slept in this morning. I have sore Achilles this morning. Evening run is still uncertain.katharmonic wrote: »@7lenny7 sounds like you had a great run. Gravel road running sounds hard though - I'm assuming it was pretty fine gravel? Hope you are stuffing your face with food and beer and being driven around!
@katharmonic while gravel road running takes more effort than paved running, it's easier than running on turf trails and is probably equivalent to running dry dirt trails. It's a hardpacked gravel with loose gravel on top...some fine stuff, some bigger rocks, some in between. I enjoy running on gravel roads.
@amymoreorless back to back 18's is a big weekend, I can understand how you feel spent!

@amymoreorless great job doing 18 miles two days in a row. You can't see me right now, but I am literally bowing down to you!2

Yesterday was our wedding anniversary, so my husband did yard work and I walked the dogs. Then we went out for dinner to our favorite Italian restaurant.
Today he joined me for my run. He's been running on the treadmill all winter, so this was his first run outside. His pace is usually faster than mine; after a mile, his shins were bothering him. We stopped so he could stretch them, and then walked about every half mile for 30-45 seconds (partly for his shins and partly because the pace was a little fast for me). I dropped him off at home after 5k and continued on to complete my planned 5 miles.
Total for the month is 28.24 miles running (seriously? I couldn't have done 0.01 more? ), just under 32 miles walking. Quite a bit less than last month, which was mostly due to a concerted effort to not make my calf/Achilles issues worse. They're definitely still an issue but they're not worse, so I'll say I've done well.
As for my other monthly goals, I lowered body fat (barely) but did not lower weight, did not run frequently as planned... but cross trained, did mobility/flexibility exercises, and strength training regularly. Most importantly, I took time off when needed and didn't pressure myself to run when my body said otherwise.8
