Is there a reason Eating clean is in quotes?? I sure hope it’s not to indicate that I am
Probably not, or that it’s some vague concept that doesn’t matter.
It really is a vague concept that doesn't matter.7 -
@autumnblade75
Ok. Sodium doesn’t matter if heart failure runs in your family, sugar doesn’t mater if you run the risk for diabetes? It’s not just about weight loss.12 -
It's kinda sad seeing all these wonderful people giving out well-thought out responses and being basically told "you're helping me RONG"16

Sodium and sugar aren't included in any singular definition of "clean eating." The phrase is junk. Limiting sodium for your blood pressure is a great initiative, but it doesn't define "clean eating." Same for sugar.
Nobody disagrees that it's a great idea to eat a vegetable, either. Just that the definition of "clean eating" varies so much from one person who claims it to the next that the phrase itself doesn't mean anything definitive. Some people claim it means only organic vegetables, and some discount dairy from "clean eating." You're trying to tell me it means no salt or sugar. Someone else will say it means avoiding grains. Meaningless.19 -
@NovusDies
Who is throwing around words like “slobs” I would never use that word towards anyone nor judge what someone eats. I only stated what I am doing. My whole family unit passed away in a span of 3 months from various reasons so yes, I am eating clean to protect my health and prevent diabetes per my doctors orders. I have no idea why anyone would take issue with that. So be snarky all you want, I won’t respond to snarky/ judgmental messages from internet strangers any longer.
Many many people have tried to warn you off from your incorrect expectations in order to improve your outlook and your chances at a sustainable plan going forward... I am one of them. I was being speculative in my slob post because you seem dismissive of some of that help.
I have said I don't care if you try to eat clean. I don't believe it will help you in any meaningful way over just shooting for balanced nutrition but if it makes you feel better mentally maybe that is enough. If you are high risk for certain things like diabetes you should see a R.D. and not rely on a doctor as they typically have little training in nutrition.
Losing a family in such a short time span has to be extremely hard and I am sorry for your loss.20 -

Controlling sodium or sugar intake is a specific dietary restriction that some people may need to do for medical reasons. That's a lot different than a vague term like "eating clean."
Nobody is arguing that reducing sodium or sugar isn't an important factor in healthful eating for some people.10 -

What’s sad is being ganged up on over using the term “clean eating” like it’s some type of egregious phrase. I never said anyone was wrong. If I could delete this thread, I would.7 -

People are just commenting. I have seen people get "ganged up on" online and this does not even come close.
People are thrown by your definition. I have seen many definitions of "clean eating" and this is the first that included low sodium and low sugar.

OP, I am truly sorry you feel like you’ve been ganged up on, I think you’ve had an amazing amount of great information in this thread. I get that you are angry and frustrated, but these people are really trying to help you. Have you had your thyroid checked? I have a thyroid problem and until it was corrected by medication my weight wouldn’t budge, I also had a lot of other symptoms that goes with low thyroid (this was 30 years ago). Once my dosage on my medication was right, I had no problem losing weight. I would seek out a Dr. and have yours checked. I put on some weight going through menopause....got it all off, but it took awhile, lots of ups and downs on the scale and quite a few plateaus for months at a time. Getting discouraged and angry doesn’t help. I do hope you find an answer and I do wish you the very best of luck!6

I wouldn't rule out the low sugar as something new, but the sodium, for sure. The lack of a common standard definition is what makes people dismissive of the phrase "clean eating."
Kudos for the low sodium. It's really admirable that you're looking to improve your eating for your health. What other rules do you mean to imply with the phrase "clean eating?" We don't know, because there's no standard definition. Maybe there's a clue, somewhere?3 -
@Jflowwers
You are frustrated. This is self evident from your posts.
A very common source of frustration is the expectation that if I provide input A, which costs me some amount of discomfort to produce, then I will get result B, which will compensate me for that discomfort.
When B doesn't materialize as expected frustration ensues.
So you can either force B, or you can modify A making things easier on you and giving you the time you need to gradually get to B
This is very difficult to do when you're in the midst of being militant about doing A and expecting B, hence a number of comments aimed to get you to adopt a more relaxed approach.
Losing family, having a health scare, and changing the way you eat are all highly stressful.
Find some joy in the process and in adhering to it as opposed to only looking for joy from the results.
Finding an appropriate process and sticking to it is a great result off and by itself!19 -
@autumnblade75
What I mean is whole foods. My plate consists of a protein and veggie, generally some healthy fats and sometimes a grain. A bit of fruit. No refined anything. Again, this is the majority of the time. I went to NYC last month and there was no way I wasn't going to eat pizza. Pretty reluctant to explain myself further with all the “wooing” and whatnot so Ill just be on my way.1 -

@Jflowwers, you sound frustrated, and that's okay. I think all of us have been through it when it comes to weight loss. It's very easy to see a stall on the scale as "just one of those things" when you're on the other side of it, or have lots of weight loss success to fall back on. It's not so easy when you are early in the process and kind of have a need to see that number drop. Trusting the process can be a lot harder than it sounds.
So rather than focusing on the scale for a bit, tell us about your progress. You said you've been working out for awhile, and that you are meeting with a trainer. How's that going? Are you enjoying the program? Have you seen any improvements with the amount you can lift, or your flexibility? Do you have any training goals? Just going and exercising consistently is a pretty big accomplishment.6
