Why wouldn't you?

As mentioned above, some people do weigh daily. So that would include after going out the night before

Nothing wrong with that as long as you are aware of fluctuations and what causes them.

Because some people just see the number on the scale as data, not emotion.
Doesn't upset me in the slightest to see a jump in weight, it's the trend that matters not individual data points.

I have a sophisticated scale at home. It measures weight, muscle mass, body fat, water weight and organ weight. It is reliably accurate.

Yesterday I knew I was going out with a friend for dinner and a few cocktails so I "saved" many of my calories until the evening. I didn't over indulge or gorge myself in the least. Split a salad with my friend and half of a small flatbread pizza and 3 drinks over the course of 5 hours.

If it takes 3500 calories to gain 1 pound and alcohol dehydrates you. How is it possible to gain 6 (SIX!!) pounds overnight when muscle mass remained constant and water weight decreased by 2%. This means that I gained 2% body fat and ate over 21,000 of EXTRA calories yesterday. Neither which is possible.

Scales are really good for giving you weight...they're pretty much useless for anything else. These "sophisticated" scales are pretty much a gimmick...Consumer Reports won't even review them anymore because they are inaccurate for anything other than weight.

You're holding onto water and have waste in your system. You can't mathematically gain 6 Lbs of fat overnight.

I can't compliment this post enough.

We all want things simple. They are......but they are not at the same time. They are simple in the long term. There is just no way to isolate a multi-variable problem in the short term accurately assess what happened to the OP in one day.

All we have is the process of elimination.

1. We know it wasn't 6 pounds of fat.
2. It therefore must be something else.
3. Why does it matter what that something else is in the short term if it's not fat?

Long term trend is simple. Day to day fluctuations, other than points of a significantly large enough data set, are a waste of time to analyze alone....
