Hey! I’m from Houston too! I know there are a few other people in this thread from Texas. Probably not surprising; it’s a big state! I am north, near The Woodlands. If we end up at the same race one of these days, we will have to meet up!
I like to run right after work, so I am relegated to the treadmill most of the summer, but it was nice yesterday. Getting bored of the rain, but it has given some nice little windows where you can actually be outside without having a heat stroke!3 -
I'm in. for the first time. I will try for 50 miles, walking or running, because I can't really guess what I can do.5

Welcome!
The important thing is to start slow and easy. It is also seemingly the hardest thing for a new runner to grasp.2 -

Hello neighbor! I live on the West Side. I know it would be far for you but they have a free timed 5k Parkrun at Terry Hershey Park every Saturday morning. We walk over to the coffee shop afterwards to visit. I’m still a new runner and haven’t done any races yet.3 -

Yeah, and here's where I'm going to stop lurking and chime in: I STILL haven't fully embraced slow and easy - I had a minute there where I thought I understood it, but I'm still struggling with it anyway. This is year 9 of my running career. When do you stop being a *new* runner?
I've been itching to participate in the discussion here, more, but actually participating in the challenge tends to make that slow and easy thing even harder. Maybe I could set a goal of "No More Than 'X' Miles."7 -
Huge props to @rheddmobile for that great 5K time in those unbelievably horrible running conditions! That is brutal!
@emmamcgarity I am in north Dallas, and my daughter lives across the street from Terry Hershey Park. When I visit, I always run that trail. Have run into the group doing the park run, but have never officially participated.
11 miles this morning. Late start due to late night last night. Went to outdoor concert / fireworks. Good opening act, and good Rolling Stones tribute band. Musicians were really good, but the front-man was just ok. Bless his heart, he was just trying to hard to act like Mick Jagger, and didn't really pull it off.
Anyway, the sun still comes up at 6am, no matter what time you go to bed. Told myself to take it very slow today, as I was in no hurry to be anywhere. That lasted for about 2 miles, and I slowly picked up speed. But felt good, even though it was about 80F and 85% humidity.
Going to another outdoor concert / fireworks show tonight. Bret Michaels. Will probably sound like a wanna be Poison tribute band after all these years, but hey, it's free 😆5 -
Participated in a 5k last night. I ran the first 1.37 at a slow but steady pace without stopping (that was 17 minutes and 3 seconds and the farthest I have run without stopping). Then I stopped running. I told myself I would continue running after walking 2 minutes but I could not get my legs to go back to a run. I ended up walking the rest except for a few short distances where I gave some effort to running.13

Well done! We all started somewhere...3 -

I don't know if we ever fully embrace "slow and easy;" it's something we have to work on every time we attempt to do a slow run.1 -
4 miles for the 4th of July! I’m so glad that I feel better today so that I could get out this morning.
Congrats to everyone who had races today!

Congratulations @rheddmobile on that race. Sounds fun and interesting. I hope your nemesis isn't injured. Maybe she's just tired of beating your kitten. Hahaha!
Congratulations to the rest of you that made it out in this heat. Yuck.
I walked today. Did not er.. decided to go outside, no tm. I'm feeling stir crazy kinda. And ugh, am I getting faaaat. I don't know how far I walked, I forgot to stop my Garmin in the quest for water and a/c. Probably about 2 miles.
No critters. There was a large wooly worm sort of thing, but he was light yellow and in a hurry. So I dismissed him.4 -
Stupid hot, but I got'er done. Mostly.

July Running Totals (miles)
7/1 – rest day
7/2 – 5.46 easy
7/3 – 4.67 easy
7/4 – 8.10 warmup + 4 mile race
July running total to date – 18.23
Nominal July mileage goal: 150
Real Goals: Build base. Ease into training for New York. Stay healthy.
Today's notes – Got up early this morning. Gun time was 8 AM, I wanted to be there at 7 so I could do a course preview as a warmup. After a conversation with @PastorVincent about sodium replenishment, I took a pillbox with some S-Caps with me. Good call.
My weather app said the dew point was 62° F. That felt about right, it might have gone up a bit from there. Garmin says it was 71° F for both my warmup and the race. That sounds about right for the warmup, but it got warmer for the race.
I creaked pretty bad at the start of the warmup. So I took it easy, and refreshed my memory of the course. Major hill in the first mile, another one in the second mile, and after those two nothing else that looked like a real hill. There was a long gentle upward grind in mile 3, and the famous hill (speed bump, really) just before the finish line. I figured out the big deal with that late speed bump: You can't see the finish line when you're going up the bump, then you turn the corner at the top and it's right there. Maybe less than 10 meters more to run.
At the end of a hard 4 mile race, when you're tired and going up one last bump that feels like a hill, it's really important to know that the finish line really is right there at the top.
Felt pretty good after the warmup. In the humidity, I was covered with sweat. Bearing in mind yesterday's cramps, I took an S-Cap. That, and my pre-race Sport Beans were enough to get about 18 ounces of water down my throat between warmup and race.
Other than that, I tried to run the race as a race, but not for a killer time. Noticed I was running a 6:10 pace early; tried to back off, not sure I succeeded before the first hill. That hill made it really easy to cut back the pace.
Three water stops. At each, I got a tiny sip and dumped most of the cup over my head. It may have helped, didn't hurt. About 2.2 miles in, I turn a corner and know the hard part is over. I pass a lot of people on the upward grind, and hang on through the last mile. Announcer tells me I could break 27 minutes. I push a bit more, and do.
Ended up finishing 20th of 561 overall, 1st of 15 in the M 60-64 age group. That's an average pace of 6:44 per mile, compared to 6:26 per mile 2 years ago; but I was running for a killer time 2 years ago, and was in better shape. Today's mission was to run hard, but no so hard that I would be compelled to just run the last mile easy.
Garmin gives my mile splits as 6:43, 6:51, 6:36, and 6:38, with another 10 seconds beyond where Garmin thought I'd run 4 miles. Gun time had me 2 seconds faster than Garmin did.
Made sure to take another S-Cap after the race. Stretched, and hung around to see what the age group awards would be. I added to my pint glass collection:
It was a long wait for the awards, but at least it was in a pleasant park on the Erie Canal with lots of shade. Of course, I didn't think about taking any pictures for you until after I got home.
Feeling pretty good right now. I'm not in the shape I want to be in, but I'm right about where I should be at this point in the process of getting back into shape.

July goal: 100 miles
7/2: 6.26 miles
7/3: 5.51 miles
7/4: 6.25 miles
18.02/100 miles completed
Today's run was a hot and humid 6.25 miles. It was 75°F, 90% humidity and dew point 72°. I had the day off, but I still got up early to run so I could beat the heat. I suppose I did, but it was still pretty hot at 6:15 this morning. Although after reading @rheddmobile 's race report I guess my run wasn't that hot after all. Great race! I don't know if I could race in that kind of heat. All in all it was a good run. Then I came home and did some yoga and we cooked out, so it has been a pretty nice day off. We probably won't do anything else today except try to keep the dogs calm when the fireworks start. I'll probably start on the new season of "Stranger Things".
Congrats on your 5K @Samantharavenclaw84 !
Congrats on the AG win @MobyCarp !

Tickers take some time to update. Just go get a drink and forget about it. When you come back later it will have fixed itself.4 -
@rheddmobile congratulations on your race!!! Tremendous job in really tough heat and crazy humidity.
@Samantharavenclaw84 good job doing a 5k, even if you walked the second half. You ran farther than ever without stopping and that's awesome.
Nice job on your AG win @MobyCarp. Great effort in the heat.

I ran the 4th of July 10-miler this morning and as everyone else is reporting - it was hot and humid. The 5k and the kids fun run started first, and the 10-mile race didn't get off until 8:45, so the temps were creeping up. I wavered on whether to run it as a race or just as a long run, and ended up somewhere in between. My friend I would have just run and chatted with, was pretty adamant that I go ahead and run my own pace and not wait for her, so I headed out at a decent pace for the first 3 miles.
The course is around a lake, with rolling hills and thankfully a fair amount of shade. It was well supported in terms of water, with enough official stops and several more unofficial ones where neighbors had water - and some ice, blessedly. I took every single water stop and had at least a sip and poured water down my back or front. I put ice in my hat, which lasted a surprisingly long time. There were some kids with super soakers, a couple of water hoses being deployed, and close to the end the fire department had a hose on with a great spray that we could run through. A friend of mine had to go to the hospital after a race last week so I was careful to be sure to drink water and I took some salt tablets and honey stinger chews.
The mental game of longer races has been tough for me since the marathon last fall, and this was a struggle. I walked a bit on a couple of hills and that is something I never do in races. Those were in miles 5 and 8, and those were the roughest and slowest miles for me. After hitting the 8-mile mark it was mostly downhill and I picked up the pace a bit, and felt an attitude improvement as I saw the end of the lake approaching. I gave it a little kick at the end and then gratefully accepted my popsicle after crossing the finish.
We went for lunch at a local restaurant/inn on the lawn and I had a lobster roll (which I could have eaten a couple of if not for the price). We had good seats from there to watch the parade go by. After that I went home and showered and crashed, and I am so happy to be enjoying the A/C and not moving for a while.
Hope everyone is enjoying a nice 4th of July. Stay cool and safe!8 -
BTW - when I said it was stupid hot for my run I meant:
Yeah, that is why my pace was over 3/min/mile slower than normal and I cut it short at 11 miles. heh.3 -
Congrats on the AG win and great splits @MobyCarp!
Way to go on that hot 10 mile race @katharmonic! And yes, I could eat my weight in lobster rolls given the chance.
Congratulations @Samantharavenclaw84 on your 5k. Great that you ran farther than you ever had before!1 -
@katharmonic Well done!0

Could be just another case of “ticker lag”. I can see the 2 mile. Way to go! Hey since it’s so hot and we’ve all tortured ourselves out in it, why not we all come over and you take us out on that lake for a cold one.😉 maybe some floatin’ in an upside-down life jacket worn like pants... and we can all watch the fireworks after @PastorVincent cooks up some of them kosher dogs and a few brats.... just a thought ya know...
2 -
We have some new runners this month, and I saw this tonight so I figured it would be good to share...
There is a lot of truth in that.14 -
July 1 - 1.1 mile
July 2 - rest
July 3 - 3.46 miles
July 4 - 3.64 miles
It was extremely hot out so I waited until after sunset and ran in the neighborhood. I took a relaxed pace in an effort not to let the heat get to me. I watched my neighbors shooting fireworks as I ran by. I felt like the mystery runner of the night jogging past and greeting everyone with “Happy 4th” while fireworks boomed overhead. I ended up with 3.64 miles at the end of my training podcast which is my longest distance for me to date. I’m planning tomorrow as a rest day but will likely still walk a bit. Planning to attend Parkrun Saturday before heading to my grandson’s birthday party.
