Hi ladies thanks for your sympathy and tips on dealing with my nicotine withdrawal.
The most important thing for weight loss is consistancy. 1lb a week is a good rate of loss, do not be swayed by all the fast weight loss hype.
Weigh everything, log honestly, be patient. The winners of this race are the ones who can eat the most and still lose weight.
You should not demonize food or feel like you have to cut out complete food groups to lose weight. This should not be a painful process.
I dropped 1lb today so that is a step in the right direction. I am still 4lbs up on my pre quit smoking weight but at least I feel a bit more in control.5 -

I do feel sorry for you, I gave up smoking 30 years and to be honest I found it so easy, so why can’t I give up chocolate/sweets.
I’m afraid one bar or packet is never enough for me.
Counting calories does not allow me very much of my favourite.
So good luck, we can do this, let’s just take it one day at a time.
I’m afraid I’m not into going to the gym, I suffer quite badly from OA and I’m not able to walk to much at the moment, I love walking.
But I’m persevering and trying so hard to do 5000 steps a day.
Have a great couple of days
Be very proud of yourself, giving up the nicotine is not easy.
Take care,
Diane x
Thanks Diane. OA is a really difficult thing to deal with. My doctor called it the "Good Arthritis" Because you can manage it. I was lucky caught it early and got a treatment plan going.
The hardest part is trying to keep moving, the pain is excruciating so it sets up a cycle of less movement more pain leading to less movement. Breaking that cycle is incredibly hard. I hope you can get some improvement as time goes by.

Something that I have found very useful is a weight trending app. I use Libra for android. I think it is Happy Scale for IOS
You weigh yourself daily same time same clothing or lack of. You enter your weight in the app and it shows you the general trend of your weight loss. It smooths out all the normal fluctuations so it is less desheartening when your weight wobbles about a bit because you can see the trend is still going down. Having all this data helps me see what causes these fluctuations so I am prepared and do not panick if my weight goes up a bit.
Speaking of fluctuations remember that this is normal, your weight can vary by quite a lot overnight for many reasons. High sodium meal, extra excercise, more carbs than normal, etc etc. This is not fat, it is water weight and will go away over the next few days.
Don't let the scale fluctuations put you off and stop your progress.
Hugs to all xx2 -

Hi manderson,
The struggle with nicotine or food is real and hard. I feel for you!
I will share what I have done in the past that helped me avoid sugar, my personal addiction. I would search the internet and read anything about how bad sugar was for my body. I watched tons of you tube videos about what things sugar and obesity did to me. I carried that knowledge and thought about it whenever I felt weak. It's aversion therapy and it helped me get over the hump and through some struggles.
I hope you get over the worst of it soon. Stay strong! You can do this! We're here to support you!
Thanks @ohbeautifulqueen I agree, keeping the health issues to the forefront of my mind is helping me a lot.0 -
I use Libra, too. I really like it.
I also use Health Mate, which syncs with my scale and MFP.1 -

Lost 4lbs in March and again in April. Weight loss slowed in May and bounced up and down in June.
In July I asked my acupuncturist/TCM (gift to self for 60y bday) for diet input.
My new macros on 1100kcal are: fat at 50g; net carbs at 90g (carbs less fiber) (AND the carbs cannot be from starches--processed grains, potatoes, carrots, corn, bananas, etc which makes this low-glycemic); protein at 70g.
Dr would like me to eat 1500kcal with the 35%-40%-25% macros profile. Right now I am happy at 1100-1300kcal.
It looks like July will be back on track. I gave myself 4 month goal to stop the weight creep and a plan that works. If I can loose 4-6 pounds in July then GW0 will be met.
Sounds like you have a handle on this just be aware that it can be difficult to get the proper nutrition under 1200 cals per day.0 -

I need to get down the gym and start lifting again but I am procrastinating for some reason.
What are you all struggling with at the moment?
How about Popsicles as a substitute?
Certainly warm enough here, you might be on to something2 -
Hi, all!
I'm in the right demographic for this thread (63) but maybe not the right goal (maintaining weight now, mid-130s, after decades at 180+ until 2015, when I lost around 50 in a bit less than a year at age 59-60). I'm sedentary outside of intentional exercise (which I've been doing around 6 days a week for 15+ years), also severely hypothyroid (but treated).
I lost weight and maintain with this eating approach:

You can reach your goals at any age: Hang in there, and don't give up! :flowerforyou:1 -
How did you deal with sagging skin, AnnPT77 since, at our age, skin doesn't have the elasticity we had as Spring Chickens?1

Patience, mostly, in my case. I have read that genetics plays a role, but I only know my own case, so I don't know how to evaluate the relative role of genetics: I only have the genetics I have.
I had loose skin, quite bad IMO in some areas, at first; but it gradually improved, continuing at least into my 2nd year of maintenance. Now, I don't think I'm significantly saggier than most women my age who've always been at a healthy weight. For sure, people who newly meet me are visibly surprised (not just politely fake-surprised) when they learn I was so recently obese, and for so long . . . including people who've seen me in close-fitting workout clothes, sleeveless shirts, shorts, etc.
I think the things that contribute to the health of all our organs probably also contribute to healthy skin that has better odds of shrinking: Not shooting for crazy-fast weight loss, getting good well-rounded nutrition, getting regular exercise (cardio and strength), drinking enough water, not smoking, etc.
One thing to realize is that true loose skin is thin wrinkles, like wrinkles in fabric. When we're not yet at goal weight, rolls or folds that are 1/2"-plus thick are not just loose skin, but also have some subcutaneous fat conspiring with gravity to keep skin stretched. Continuing to goal will help deplete that fat layer, or if already at goal weight, recomposition (holding weight steady, while adding muscle) can potentially help. True loose skin - the thin wrinkles - will in my experience potentially keep shrinking for a long time. That's not to say there'll be none. And, of course, plastic surgery remains an option.
I think that if you look in the Success Stories part of the forum here, you'll see photos of people who've lost very substantial amounts of weight (way more than I did) who look really good in the long run, with much less loose skin than many people imagine will happen - even people who are our age.7 -
Hello, I have many things in common with ya'll, I turned 65 in March, started mfp in 2016, lost 50lbs & maintained for over a year then I quit smoking & gained 10. have munchies in evening. It was easy to quit smoking because the same day I quit, I started vaping & have no desire to go back to smoking & feel so much better. I stopped going to the gym for a while because one of my dogs died on January 15th & although I have other dogs, they are older so I would walk "Grizzly" with my little one every morning then take all of them to dog park, so I grieved so much I hardly walked for a while or went to gym. I've been back to the gym & plan to keep going. I also have arthritis & tendonitis & what works great for me is making turmeric paste (or golden paste) out of turmeric. My pain is 98% gone but starts coming back if I forget to take some every day. I hate the taste so I mix it in some cashew milk. I also give the pill form to my senior dogs & makes a world of difference. I weigh everything I eat but it's still a struggle to stay on track but hoping I'll get there3

@AnnPT77 You are always welcome anywhere on MFP.
Ladies if you don't listen to anyone else you should listen to this woman as she knows whereof she speaks.

Aww, thanks: You're so sweet!2 -
Morning Ladies.
How are you all doing today? Hope you are all dealing with your own struggles in a positive way and not letting anything dishearten you. Keeping going is key even if you have a wobble here and there.
I think I may have broken through my mini plateau and am heading down again.
I seem to have cracked the no smoking thing. I am not eating all the food anymore.
The biggest test of my will power is still to come. I am going to visit with my best friend in a few weeks and she smokes. It has always been a big part of our relationship, along with food, alcohol and dancing. So it is going to change the dynamic a bit if I am not constantly popping out for a ciggy with her.
I will just have to try and stay strong and not cave in, she won't pressure me or anything so it will all be down to me.
Hope you all have a positive day today

Congratulations on getting a handle on giving up the cigarettes, Manderson27. I know it's not easy, especially when you're going to be around a friend who is a smoker. Stay strong and try to find a substitute. Maybe a glass of water whenever she lights up? Think positively about all the great effects not smoking is doing for your character and health. Keep in mind, cigarettes are like potato chips - you can't have just one.
I'm going off Keto. All the fat is wrecking havoc with my Crohn's and I'm losing too much blood. Decided to go back to the high protein, low carb diet the doc had me on. To kick it off, I'm fasting all day today and then tomorrow I'm going carnivore for 5 days. Just water and meat.1 -
Sorry you have to deal with Chron's, I don't know a lot about it but I do know it can be a *kitten*. I hope your change of diet helps bring you some relief.0

It's been a good Sunday so far. I work every Saturday & Sunday I work after church. Doing well on eating so far. We're going over our daughter's for dinner, She lives nextdoor. Grilled chicken thighs, asparagus & corn on cob. I do well untill the evening but I'm not giving up & will do my best not to snack tonight1
-
I try to save some calories for snacks in the evening. I usually skip breakfast (Intermittent fasting) just have a coffee. I eat my first meal around 12:30 I may or may not have a snack in the afternoon then dinner around 7pm then if I am still hungry I will have something around 10pm, I don't go to bed until later I am a night owl.
If I eat first thing I tend to carry on eating and end up going over my calories. So saving breakfast calories for my late night snack works for me.0 -
If I snack after dinner, I always end up going overboard. Sigh, no willpower what so ever.0

Strong first post advertising a poker site on a fitness site. You do know it is against the rules to do that.0

I'm 62 and starting again. I'm going to WDW in Sept for 2 weeks and I need to be down 10 lbs by then.0

There's a thread that helps us break our late night snacking patterns. Search for "late night snacking". Because of this thread, I've now reached 42 days without snacking at night. Without having to log into that thread, I'd probably still be doing it, at least a little.2 -
I don't have "Permission" to access it.

I have my breakfast around 11-12, I call it breakfast because of what I eat, I try to have dinner late so I won't snack at night, sometimes it works. go to bed around midnight0
-
I think I'm going to follow your lead, Evamutt, and have my big meal (and calories) at night. Maybe that will help me control my snacking.0
-
@BlancheandSmooshyface It is all about finding a way of eating that means you can stick to your calorie allowance and still enjoy your food. If this means moving your meals and snacks around that is fine there is no hard and fast rule on when you should eat what. Play around with it until you find your sweet spot.
One of the biggest mistakes a lot of people make is to set their weekly weight loss goal to high. We would all like to lose 3 or 4 lbs a week but that is just not realistic so of course we end up giving up as the loss just doesn't happen fast enough.
10.5 - 2lbs is a much more realistic goal and you get to eat a reasonable amount of food and are not starving yourself or losing out on nutrition.
Having more realistic goals and understanding that it will be a slower process than we would like is key to making changes that stick.4 -
I don't understand something...when I was losing at 150 lbs, mfp gave me about 1400 calories/day set at 1 lb/wk maintenance was 1777/day since I gained 10 lbs, for 1 lb/wk mfp gives me 1200/day. I set it at 1/2 lb/wk since I can't live on 12000
-
Hi Ladies,
Haven't heard from you in awhile and I miss it! Any updates you want to share?
Me - my weight has been up-down-up-down but only by a little bit (I weigh daily for motivation). I'm focusing on the last down because it's a new number! Yeah! Only 3 more pounds to my next mini-goal! Still logging faithfully.0 -

Did you set yourself as sedentary perhaps try lightly active and see what that gives you. If you don't have much to lose then .5 lb per week will be best.
