August 2019 Monthly Running Challenge

Just got back from the wedding in Wisconsin last night. As I feared, I didn't get any exercise in while I was gone. There was a lot of driving and sitting. Don't get me wrong, it was a great trip, just NO exercise. I also didn't have time to check in on you all, so was 10 pages behind in the July thread and already 5 pages behind here. I think I'll just give up on the July thread and try to catch up here.
I am going to try for 60 miles of moving in August - walk, run, ski machine, or whatever else I decide to do that gets my heart rate up. I did manage to beat my 30 mile goal in July. I figure I should be able to average 2 miles a day of something. Right? I did get in a 2 mile walk today to start the month off right.11 -
A lovely run this morning to start August off. 5km which I quite enjoyed, which I wasn't expecting as a) it was hot, about 28C at 8am, b) my headphones weren't working so I had no entertainment and c) we were running into a strong wind which made the going difficult. However, not having headphones made me concentrate on other things for a while, mainly the sound of my breathing - wow I sound like I'm dying when I run!
I have added a few photos of my beautiful run, it's where my Grandad lives in Spain, a lovely spot for running!
@MegaMooseEsq your cats are beautiful! I love seeing the various cats and dogs on this board.
I've also been thinking about the questions of the month but don't have time to attempt the long ones just now... So I'll just say that my shoe size is 5.5UK, my new trainers (adidas boosts) are a US8 though, confusingly. And the best meal I ever had was an Italian in Cluj, Romania, where I had really simple homemade pasta cooked in butter and sage, and it was beautiful, to-die-for! And then I has ice-cream, which I am a fiend for, and a great coffee, and great wine. Everything you need in a meal!
Hmm - tried to edit my ticker and it didn't work. Oh well! I did do 5k, honest!

@JMNagain that definitely is a gorgeous place to run. Nice photos.
Welcome to all the newcomers to the group. We are happy to have you here and look forward to you joining in. As you can see it's an active group and can be hard to keep up with, but we all jump in and out when we can.
Date :::: Miles :::: Cumulative

I spent a couple of hours attacking that large tree limb with a chainsaw and I think I came out the winner for the most part. At least I didn't cut into anything that I wasn't aiming for. It was exhausting work so after I showered I took a little nap. Then I met a friend for a run. It was 81 degrees but the humidity is actually pretty low today so not terrible. If you aren't running it seems really pleasant. She had a time limitation and I had an energy limitation so just 3.6 miles today. Another shower and resting up before heading out again.
Goals:
So after a little calculation, I'm going to set my goal at 130 miles for August. It's going to be a bit tricky as my weekends are filling up with things other than long runs so I'm going to have to really work to stay on track. October is not that far away.
Upcoming races:
8/10/2019 Boston Super Spartan Race, Charlton, MA
8/11/2019 Boston Sprint Spartan Race, Charlton, MA
10/19/2019 I-35 Challenge KC Half Marathon, Kansas City, MO
10/20/2019 I-35 Challenge DSM Half Marathon, Des Moines, IA
11/10/2019 Syracuse Half Marathon, Syracuse, NY8 -
@JMNagain That is a beautiful place to run. Glad you had a good one, even if the conditions weren't ideal.0

Going for 50 miles again 🙈 probably won’t make it but ever the optomist! Went for my run, then dinner with other half to celebrate our 21st wedding anniversary.
01/08 2.54 miles. Going to try to get back to 3+ miles again9 -
Ohhh I have a very bias monthly question .
Compare yourself now to 10, 20 and 30 years ago. What improvements do you love? What do you look forward too? What do you miss and how do you deal with that? Follow up with what would your 15 year old self think of you today.
ETA I think @MobyCarp would have loved this topic.
Let’s see, I’m 51 now, so I would have been 41, 31, and 21.
When I was 21 I was still in college. I was very slim - underweight even - and had a side job doing local modeling. I looked pretty good on the outside. But on the inside I was very sick with undiagnosed lupus. It would take me more than ten years to get a diagnosis, and in the meantime I went through various forms of misery. It’s much better knowing what the illness is and being able to receive proper treatment than feeling bad and having doctors claim there was nothing wrong.
One thing I prefer about myself today is that sometime when I was in my mid-twenties I learned not to put up with people who like drama. My husband and I - who were part of the same crowd back then, even before we were dating - call this “running up and down stairs” because my roommate and I lived in a townhouse where someone was always running upstairs and locking themselves in a bathroom in a snit. Then everyone would come stand outside the bathroom door and talk through the door trying to calm the person down. One day I just snapped and got in my car and drove away, leaving the door locked and the drama queen inside. And that was the end of running up and down stairs.
When I was 31 I had recently moved to the house where I live now with my husband and both our careers had started to take off. This was a younger and better period in our industry (video games) when developers had tons of money to throw around and schedules were informal. I remember spending long days at the park and taking walks at midnight while discussing work. I definitely miss the freedom and joy of working for creatives instead of suits. Physically I was starting to get a little heavy, but my focus was elsewhere, and I wasn’t paying a lot of attention to my body or diet.
When I was 41 I had just finished the second of my major dieting phases, during which I lost 50 lbs, from 250 to just under 200. Then just when I was starting to feel fitter and better about myself, I had a lupus flare which knocked me completely off my feet. I was nearly bedridden for months, gained all the weight back and then some, and was left with a fear that any time I started to get healthy it would cause another flare. I still deal with that fear.
Today I am physically stronger than I ever have been. I have diabetes which I regret - if I could send a message back in time, it would be to do something about my weight and health before getting an incurable disease. But so far I manage the diabetes pretty well. I would also tell my 20 year old self to go to the ER after snapping a thing in my knee - although acl repairs weren’t really a thing back then, so it might not have helped. But if I had been able to get my acl repaired in a timely fashion my life today would be much better.
My 15 year old self wanted to be an Olympic level 3 day event rider. She wouldn’t think much of me, I’m afraid. But it was her decisions that led away from that career - I had a close family friend who was an excellent nationally-ranked rider before taking a fall which left her with crippling fear and spinal injuries, and I saw how good she was, and how hard she had worked, and how she wasn’t even close to the top of her profession and now had to find a new one, and it seemed to me that it wasn’t worth missing out on all the normal parts of teenage life to risk everything for a dream with such a low rate of pay. Fortunately I had a dream to fall back on - my 7 year old self had wanted to create worlds for other people to explore. And I get to do that today.12 -

I signed up for a 15K on October 19. I am also trying to lose some weight. On top of this, I will be traveling for work 14 out of 16 days from August 4-19, then will be joining the in-laws on the Jersey Shore the last week of the month. So what possibly could go wrong with a high volume running plan, coupled with a caloric deficit, while only being home for what will seem like 4 hours the entire month? But I was able to order 6 pairs of my beloved Saucony Kineta Relay running shoes. And one of the hotels I'll be staying at later this month has a 9ft deep swimming pool so I can act like a child and do back flips all afternoon. I sometimes pick hotels solely based on their pool depth. This was me yesterday morning acting like a fool:.
Haha! Fix me.

@LindsayLou66 When is your mom's birthday? I'm turning 60 on Sunday. That is why I chose to set my goal at 60 miles this month too!5

8/1 - 0 work ugh!
0 of 80 miles
Thanks for the welcome back! Work has been insane, hopefully it will calm down in the next week. Have a 10 mile trail race on Saturday that I'm not sure I'm ready for but looking forward to it.10 -
On my way to work this morning I realized that my running shoes are 6 months old. I wondered if they might be contributing to my hip pain even though I know I was doing more training than I was ready for. It’s been a few years since I was properly fitted for shoes and I thought I might stop into Flert Feet after my next paycheck. Then a funny thing happened this afternoon at work. Apparently I was awarded “employee of the month” which comes with a nice gift card. So I dashed over to Fleet Feet after work and promptly spent it! I got a pair of Brooks Ghost 11s and a pair of Saucony. I usually wear ASICS which fit me well, but I was amazed at how much better these cradled my narrow heel. My out of pocket expense after the gift card was $55 including the tax.14

Got out for my first run in at least a week. I did not have time but did a HM anyways. The pace was a bit slow for me, but with the temps, it probably was about right. Was a lot hotter than the weather report suggests, and humidity was higher.
Have not had time to reply to anyone, but have read all the posts. Y'all are amazing keep it up! Probably be spotty for a while to get runs and replies in... Another interview tomorrow! And turned down another interview that low balled the salary range. To early in the game to take a pay cut I think. I mean it has only been a week.

Hello all I’m new to this fourm. I’m in a running group and we have a Facebook group but this is different. I like it.
Little about me: 40+,overweight mom of 2 kids (20yrs and 15yrs old), unhealthy husband (multiple health issues), lost both of my parents to neurological diseases. (Boy that was depressing) ok switch to good stuff
I run/walk as much as I can time willing. I live in a location that I can not run from, so I must travel to run. Dangerous to run my road. Crazy drivers. I’m an assistant coach for my son’s high school cross country team. He hates it, I love it. Lol
My goal this month is to restart C25K again, and run/walk 3x a week. Mileage: not sure what I’m capable of so I’ll set a better one next month.

Forgot to post this yesterday but! I went on run 2/3 of the week--I guess the first one doesn't count as it was in July but my goal is three runs per week for now. I haven't gone on a proper run in months so I'm easing back into it. It was much easier than expected--maybe because I'm going easy on myself--and makes me wonder why I didn't get started but oh well... I'm here now and that's what counts.
Good luck to everyone this month!10 -
So I've got this idea...
Earlier this year I had considered, and then scrapped plans to do a 50k trail race in June. The route isn't too far from where I'm spending the summer, and after a grueling uphill over the first 10k, it looks pretty flat. I'm currently in "half marathon anytime" shape and have been training regularly, but haven't run farther than that since doing a marathon in May. The idea? To HIKE the 50k route in a day, with maybe a little easy running mixed in after I get up into the highlands, roughly aiming for 10 hours (which happens to be the cutoff were I doing the race). I feel like it's a reasonable thing given the shape I'm in... BUT I've never gone that far before. I kinda expect this group to enable, uh, I mean encourage me to go for it, but please speak up if you have advice or thoughts about it!
Haven't some of you done some all-day hiking? How did it go, compared to your running fitness?
August goal 100 miles
I cycled today. My cycling fitness comes and goes so quickly... after all the traveling I've been doing, it's currently missing in action. So I didn't push it. 6k of hills felt just about right.11 -
Yep, I say go for it @polskagirl01! Sounds like a doable challenge given the shape you are in. And you know, if you DON'T do it, you'll wonder if you coulda4
-
A little late on the Goal, my training has me at 60 miles. It sounds daunting The training is getting real!!!
Aug Goal-60 miles
8/2/19- 4.4

@polskagirl01 yeah I second the go for it!
On a much smaller scale which could however be comparable as I had only ever done one HM and the long runs included in a novice training plan for that (in other words, I had probably only ever done 3 or 4 runs longer than 10km in my life!), I did a hiking holiday at Easter and survived it. The longest couple of days were around 20-25km each, which took us 6 hours or so (I think, Strava shows 8 and a half hours for the 24km day but we stopped for lunch and bathroom and coffee breaks). I wasn't in my best shape, had only worked back up to running about 5-6km at a time after my injury, and my legs felt VERY tired and heavy after about 4 hours. In fact I think I found it harder than running for the very reason that I was on my feet for so much longer than when running. The worst part was stopping for coffee and sitting down. It took a mile or so after re-starting to not feel like I was walking on two cement posts. But a week later I was as good as new, and I'm doing another one next Easter
What I think I am trying to say (verbal diarrhea, sorry) is that considering you've done a marathon and are in pretty damn good shape you will probably find it challenging but not impossible. And as @Scott6255 says, if you don't try how will you know if you could, or live with wondering if you could? ;-)
ETA: PS, we want photos!4 -
A short 2.5km run this morning as I got up late (too much wine last night!) And it was already very hot. Enjoyed it though,
Running through the orange groves is very calming.
@polskagirl01 that sounds great! I have done a lot of hiking and 50km in 10 hours is hard work with not many stops, but very doable if you're in HM shape. Especially if its relatively flat, as you say. Just makes sure you have super comfy shoes...

So, question for everyone: would you run in a cemetery? Would you run a RACE through a cemetery grounds?
I just got a race flyer for a 5k at a cemetery in support of Camp Good Grief, which is a camp for children who have lost parents. I’m conflicted - on the one hand it’s a good cause, and on the other, it seems disrespectful to hold a race, moon bounce, and grill hamburgers at a cemetery... also my granddad and uncle are buried there, if that means anything. It’s a very “modern” cemetery where they already mow over flat grass plaques set into the ground, and forbid flowers except for ones approved by the office, and it’s also home to the “Crystal Shrine Grotto” which has to be seen to be believed - it was created sometime in the 70s and is very much of its time, with Groovy Jesus paintings and colored light sculptures and fake stone trees like something from vintage Disneyland. My husband calls it “Happy Death Land.” So, honestly it’s not a very dignified resting place to begin with. But still... it just seems weird to race at the same place I have been to several internments of loved ones...7 -
@rheddmobile I think I asked this same question about 2 years ago. I raced a 5k that went through the cemetery. The responses I received were that most people think it is ok to run in the cemetery. They are parks after all. I do sometimes run through the cemetery which is about .5 miles from my house. I try to be respectful. If there is a funeral going on I do not go in there. If I see someone visiting a grave then I will usually alter my path so as not to disturb them. Our cemetery is pretty old and there are some really interesting headstones in there. I often think about my loved ones who are buried there when I run past their plots. I always stick to the roads and one of the things I like about running there is that there are nice roads and there is usually no traffic and if a car does come through the speed limit is 10 mph. I also see jackrabbits in there which I like. I only see cottontails on my other routes. I felt a little conflicted about it the first time when I saw that the 5k race was going to cut through the cemetery. But honestly the cemetery is a really peaceful place to run.5
-
we have a few popular cemeteries to run in.
i think, it's ok as the dead ones would probably want people to be happy and enjoy themselves. it's really so the loved ones have a physical place to visit those passed on. imho3 -
I didn't quite bump up against my 120 mile limit last month, so I'm leaving it right there for another month. I guess that means I will need to back off on trying to run 8 miles every time I hop on the treadmill, and run a few shorter runs to stay under the limit. A sure way to run fewer miles? Do them too fast! There is a serious difference between 11 minute miles and 11:15.
6 -
@polskagirl01 I think if you've looked into it and thought about it this much, you should do it. I bet you would end up easy running quite a bit of it if it's fairly flat. What's the weather likely to be at the time the race is held? If the odds are that it was going to be really hot I would probably not want to attempt it.
@rheddmobile I run and walk my dog through a couple of cemeteries fairly often and I think there is no problem with that as long as you are respectful. Our run group runs in one pretty frequently in small groups and the coach has talked with the grounds people and they are happy to have us. A race in cemetery sounds potentially controversial but I would assume if it's being held, that proper permission has been obtained and at least the cemetery is ok with it.

I went out earlier than usual for my Friday morning pre-strength training run today and met up with a couple of friends. I planned to get 5 miles but ended up a little short. It was a pretty nice morning though, and I was actually chilly before I started and hesitant to take off my long sleeves. But of course it warmed up quickly. It's a really gorgeous low humidity day here.
I've hit the Spartan training hard the last couple of days. Last night I went to the ninja gym and did a lot of practice on rope climbing (especially after I was tired to try to ensure I can do it at the end of a race, where it always seems to fall), monkey bars and rings. This morning I did 10 minutes on the Jacob's ladder at the gym with a 20 lb vest and then the sled, push-ups, pull-ups, squats, mace work, more rings, and jumping/climbing a "wall" of the box-jump boxes.
And, when I got to the gym this morning I was greeted by posted flyers of the "Featured Athlete of the Month" and guess what? It was me! It's still amazing to me to see my name by the word "athlete". Here's a bit of the flyer:13 -
@rheddmobile: I was disappointed when I found out you can’t run in the cemetery by my house - I love the peacefulness and quiet of cemeteries. Of course, peace and quiet isn’t exactly what I think of when I think of a race, but I agree that celebrating life and a good cause doesn’t feel disrespectful.1
