WOMEN AGES 50+ FOR AUGUST 2019

NYKaren – congrats on 4 years!
I am in the upper end of healthy BMI. Have read some things that older folks shouldn’t necessarily worry about being under 25. But who knows? I mean, I don’t know from day to day if eggs are on the good list or back on the bad!
Ginny in Ohio
Ginny - doctors seem to have differing opinions on the BMI thing for older people. One doctor told me she preferred to see women, at least, 10 pounds above the top end of their healthy BMI range, because they had more stamina, and more resistance to bugs. And I quit paying attention to most opinions on whether a food will kill you or not after they said coffee was bad for you, then good for you, then bad for you, and now that it actually protects you against some diseases like Parkinsons, type 2 diabetes, liver disease, even liver cancer. Here's the link, if you think I'm kidding. https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/nutrition-and-healthy-eating/expert-answers/coffee-and-health/faq-20058339.
My personal opinion is that they're all trying to make one-size-fits-all judgments, when in reality (as they admit at that link), every human being is unique in how they react to coffee and everything else. I think we are also unique in terms of how our bodies work at various BMIs. But, then again, my personal opinion is worth what you just paid for it, so take that with a grain of salt. But only one grain of salt if you have high blood pressure! Oh, that's right, they're not sure about the salt restrictions anymore, either! https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/salt-good-or-bad.
For everyone who's new - Don't feel you must answer everyone on this thread. In July, we averaged more than 60 posts per day, because we're active, wonderful human beings who drop in, answer a question, make a comment, or share an image, and then go back on with our busy lives. Please don't let this thread add to your stress - read when you can, answer or comment when you feel moved to do so, tell us of your victories in the fight to get healthy, or your struggles, and just keep coming back. I think of it as a noisy, large gathering, where I can talk to those who are within earshot, and no one on the other side of the room is going to be upset because I'm speaking to those who are nearest me. Luckily, because it's recorded on this thread, I can also "hear" all the other conversations and comments, and respond to those when I choose, as well. No stress; no pressure, just a community of like-minded women.
Much love to all...
Lisa in AR11 -
Thanks for the links Lisa in AR. It is a bit amusing how much the advice changes over the years. I think the main thing is to primarily eat foods that give the body the right fuel in moderation. I know my body feels better at the lower weight, but it has to be sustainable for me and what impacts my body may not impact someone else. I also know that regular exercise (for me, walking is primary), gives me more energy. If I eat a lot of sugars/highly refined carbs, my energy goes away (especially in the middle of the day), but a smaller bit of them seems fine. Get bloodwork done this month and follow up with my internist who I really trust. Very sensible doctor who looks to see if everything looks balanced. I also deal with the lack of any thyroid gland for the past 23 years and my thyroid cancer, so that makes my body function a bit differently-but as I have discovered it doesn't mean I can't maintain a healthy weight!

Rebecca and Connie: Sending positive vibes to you both, for DDiL and Mama respectively. Also to anyone else with health issues for themselves/family members.
Rebecca: Communications with DH re trashed lunch cracked me up. I don't think they do intuitive! 😂
DH and I are very conservation minded. We use fabric shopping bags and I take my own reusable bags for loose produce to the supermarket. We garden organically, and grow some of our own veg. This year I made a pact with myself that I wouldn't buy anything new unless it was absolutely necessary. Have kept to that fairly well. (I did weaken before the holidays and bought myself a new pair of sandals.) I love thrift shops. They kept me well dressed as I dropped to my present weight.
Ginny: I have also been concentrating on strength/flex this last few months. Pleased to have noted this week that my muscle mass percentage is up 3%.
Machka: I often find I have done something but don't know how I achieved it. 😂 Bargain Hunt is one of my favs for chilling out!
Lisa: Every one of us is different, so the 'one size fits all' approach is a blunt instrument at best. I tend to take some of the research results with a pinch of salt (low sodium, of course! 😂) as much research is funded by pharmaceutical/food industries with vested interests.

Good morning! Happy Friday! It is Friday! I am sitting here, sipping my coffee and wishing I could just bathe in it. It has been a crazy week (mood wise for the kiddos). Since it is Coast Guard Festival week, parents have been taking half days or full day and keeping kids with them to spend the day at the carnival and other activities going on. So I have had kids in and out and when they come back to me they are usually sunburned and tired. All I have planned for today is a walk to get some milkweed for our caterpillars, and a couple of board games. It is the last day of our Rivers, Lakes, Oceans week; but I am taking it easy and pulling out Finding Nemo and Finding Dory. lol We need the down time. Next week is Farm Week and we will take a field trip downtown on Wednesday and go shopping at the Farmer's Market, play at a playground and splash pad, and picnic.
I didn't have Trentin last night, so I got my shopping done for next week. That feels good. Now I have a little more time tonight and tomorrow to do other things (or nothing if I so choose).
Boy, I am drawing a blank. I think I need more coffee. Sending love and support to all who need or want it! ttfn xoxoxo KJ (Kelly)6 -
Beautiful morning here and I’m starting the day on my back porch—my happy place
Am looking forward to visiting a sculpture garden/museum in Hudson valley this afternoon and then going to see “Into the Woods” this evening in an open air theater on the banks of the Hudson River. Been looking forward to this all summer.
NYKAREN6 -
NYKAREN - Really envious of your 'Into The Woods' experience. Have a wonderful time.
Rebecca - Glad the op went well. Hope she has a quick recovery. :flowerforyou:
My knee is still not 100% . Bit clicky and stiff. I might try a run as I haven’t done one since Sunday. Missing it.
Plastic bag use in the UK has fallen by 95% since they started charging for them. Most of that fall has been in the last year since David Attenborough 's programme on plastic in the ocean.
I do wish supermarkets packaged things better. Locally I can buy package free fruit and veg, also pasta, nuts etc, but often I'm too lazy and just pick up stuff I know is over packaged.
I'm very good about making my clothes last a long time and we rarely replace household items. But I know there is much more to do.
Love Heather UK xxxxxxx0 -
It's Friday, Peeps!
NYKaren - so glad the Cipro is doing the trick. So glad it's not a kidney stone, whew.
Ginny - Lisa covered the BMI discussion very well. It was a topic on this thread a while back, and many of us opt for top of BMI or a bit over for bone health. Evidently fat cells produce some estrogen which helps protect our bones. And not only that, if we do get sick or have a health challenge where we can't eat for a few days, we have some reserve.
Do any of you watch "Alone"? I find it so fascinating to watch these folks survive by their wits and how they burn body fat when they can't find food. And how important it is for them to eat fat if they can find it. Eskimos ate blubber and some more primitive tribes throughout the world eat toasted fatty grubs. There's a reason for that.
Lisa - thank you for all of those links I always look forward to your input.
Heather and Katla - so sorry to hear about your achy knees. Does icing them help?
Connie in KY - so glad the house situation has settled down for your mom and crossing fingers your sis stays sober! If your sis was still insisting on being a pill, I was ready to put our Pip on a plane with her boot to have a "discussion" with her. "Put the fun in dysfunctional" LMAO!!
Rebecca - so sorry to hear about your DIL's sudden surgery. So happy Athena is here! And your DH tossing the box - I am still amazed at how their brains are wired, lol. I can see mine doing the exact same thing.
I have an appointment with the surgeon in 2 weeks to check out my belly button. It's not urgent so no biggie right now. Wish I didn't have to wait so long but our rural community hospital has gone from 3 general surgeons 10 years ago to 1 plus a part-timer.
In the meantime I continue with the low-carb in hopes of reducing the belly fat & pressure. I am getting full of chicken - I discovered our local Safeway removes the meat from the left-over rotisserie chickens and sells it as "shredded" at the same price per lb as a whole chicken. Perfect and I don't have to get all greasy, lol. Also am working down my stack of canned salmon. I don't eat much beef or pork but will get some off-bone ham at the Safeway, I see it's on sale.
Thankful for avocados. I make huge frittatas with diced bacon, cheese, mushrooms, and often chopped kale so have it on hand for a quick breakfast or snack. I need to take some time and go thru the menu suggestions on the Diet Doctor.
Time to get the dog up. The CBD treats seem to be helping her limping a bit. I know she's faking at times just to get a treat. Smart dog!
Those of you who are using CBD on your dogs.... do you find it takes several days or weeks to take effect?
Make it a great day ladies! Over and out!

I stopped drinking coffee in 2009 in part because I was following an eating plan that didn't include coffee and in part because I realized that I liked coffee a lot because of the flavored creamer I put in it. I have not returned to drinking coffee because I noticed that it took a lot of my time in the morning and made it difficult to walk the dogs for long without needing a potty break. Not drinking coffee is also frugal since I now drink water with nothing added to it. My decision has nothing to do with whether coffee is good for me or bad for me. I don't suggest to anyone else that they do without coffee. It's just something that works for me.
We bring our own bags to the grocery store. I am considering buying bags for veggies so we don't have to use the plastic bags in the stores.
I read everything that everyone writes and comment on topics when I have something to stay. I love you all and welcome you to my life each morning as I eat my breakfast.

Lanette When Farley was still alive, I noticed hints of improvement within days after starting CBD, but it was 2 weeks before I was certain. I believe I told this story before, but he was a kidney failure dog and had gotten so skinny, & weak in his back legs. He had bad knees from botched knee surgeries. Plus he had arthritis in joints & spine. It had gotten to the point where he couldn't get his back quarters over the threshhold from the deck into the house without banging his knees, stumbling, and sort of scrambling/crawling into the house if I wasn't ready to give him an assist. Poor sweet little doggie. 2 weeks after starting CBD, he hopped over the threshhold like my old Farley. I was elated. It improved his quality of life in other ways, too. His appetite improved, pooping was easier, he gained a little weight, his coat regained its shiny quality, his dry skin improved...and he was just perkier, friskier, more playful. Obviously feeling much better. I miss my Farley. I realize CBD doesn't work for every pet or person. I haven't given it to Bailey, my dog with heart failure, yet, but may try it to see if it will improve his appetitite.
Heather & Terri I woke up thinking about plastic bags this morning. I need to get a life, LOL! Specifically, the ziplock type, not the grocery bags. We usually use cloth bags & insulated soft-sided "coolers" when we get groceries these days to avoid bringing home those plastic bags. But I would like to minimize or eliminate the ziplock-type bag. I do like them for keeping (non-food) stuff dry & dust-free & sorted, but I want to eliminate their use for food storage. I have Rubbermaid containers, but wondered if any of you have A) completely eliminated use of plastic food storage bags, and/or B ) tried those silicone reusable zip-type food storage containers, or C) have any other thoughts/ideas about this topic.

I wrote a thank you note to my Biology professor from college (1973-76). I have been thinking of the pivotal role she played in my life as I get nearer to retirement, and went looking to see if she was still alive, which she is. Another beloved professor I would have liked to thank succumbed to pancreatic cancer 5 years ago, I found, which saddened me immeasurably. At any rate, I called my alma mater and explained what I was up to. I told them I had found a possible address on line but wanted to verify it. They said they'd get back to me in a day or so, which they did! The woman at my alma mater asked if I could just say the address I had found...& then she just sort of murmured assent. I was so grateful; I know they can't just give out information willy-nilly on emeritus professors and alumni. I have written my thank you note & will post it today. My professor is 79 now! Just 14 years older than I am. The age difference seemed much greater back then.

I usually get carrots for the horses and cut them in pieces for them at the evening feeding. I get evening feeds ready when I go out at 3:00 or so to check water, etc. The last few days something has been stealing the pieces of carrot and last night some apple treats I had gotten ready. I wish I had a motion sensitive camera to find out who is so bold as to come right in the barn to get treats. Doesn't take any feed just the treats. LOL
Everyone take care, Sue in WA
I vote for purchasing a motion-sensing camera to capture that bold carrot & apple-loving thief in action, LOL!!!

Good morning, Ladies!! I am back from a week of visiting my children and grandchildren in Florida. What a wonderful time! Now, I must admit I am a bit depressed not waking to the smiling faces of the children! My big success, was not gaining any weight on the trip. I made lots of good choices and didn't have to log part of the time because I am getting more aware of how many calories, fats, proteins, sugars, etc in different foods. We ate out a lot which meant making good choices and only eating part of what was served. My sweet son bought sugar free desserts for Mom so I wouldn't feel left out when they had theirs! So thoughtful!
Five pages to catch up with just one day! So much has been happening with everyone! Thank you Barbie, Amber and Machka for getting August started. I haven't even attempted to catch up with the posts I missed in July.
Everyone is setting great goals for August! My main goals are better planning and lots more movement. I was bullet journaling...must get back on that because it seems to be a great way to track things. I need more vegetables (ick) and less sweets (diabetes)…but oh, how I crave sweets night and day!
Rebecca, I am so sorry you can't have a cat! I don't know how I would live without my doggies! I think I would have to toss DH out if he didn't love them, too! lol
Michelle Impressed with your DVDs. I want some killer buns and thighs, but I have to start a bit easier than that. Thinking of chair yoga.
Tracey Hope the hip flexor is improving. That's a painful injury!
Jojo I log throughout the day so I don't miss anything that goes in my mouth. If I plan ahead, I might sneak something else. Of course, I plan what I will make for dinner, but the rest of the day stays pretty much the same choices.
Connie So sorry to hear about your Mom's dx and health issues. Hope she is able to fight the cancer in a non invasive way and recover quickly! So hard to try to take care of ourselves when we are caring for parents. Remember, you have to be okay to have anything to give for her...don't let yourself get too rundown!
Bananas I hadn't really thought much about the crowding in the clouds with all the information on the computers. I have a lot of stuff to clean up on mine. It is so time consuming! Hate that we are leaving carbon footprints in the air so to speak. Thanks for bringing that article to our attention. I am still working on recycling everything I can and not purchasing disposables like I used to.
Lisa I have trouble sleeping because of pain of exercise. I was sedentary a long time and the movement now causes so much pain (plus various injuries and fibro). I hope your pain subsides and you can get good rest to recover and continue!
Debby Hope your grandson is able to heal his elbow without surgery. It's so tough for little ones to keep joints still to heal!
KJ My DH doesn't care who pays attention to me. I think he's pretty sure if they got to know me they would never stick around. It is nice to be treated sweetly, but I am past wanting the attention. Glad you were able to get out on the bike again! I have started incumbent bike at the gym. Harder than I thought it would be!
Heather My knees have been a mess since my 20s. Occasionally, I get shots, but usually it's just try not to allow them to get too inflamed. They are pretty much bone on bone for the past 40 years.
Rebecca Glad to hear DILs surgery went well. Prayers for quick healing!
NYKaren Happy your UTI cleared up. I have one that the urologist says has probably never healed completely since January (it was actually the thing that made them find my diabetes). I just went through another round of antibiotics and now am on a drug that makes your urine acidic and turns it to formaldehyde to kill off the infection. Sounds awful and I'm nervous I will smell like a dead person, but I hope it is effective.
All of You are very inspiring and make me smile when I read your comments whether it is because you are doing so well, or because I can relate so well to things you are experiencing. Hoping I can keep up with the thread, because you are a great group of women!!!

Karen in VA - I was hoping you'd respond ref Farley and CBD. Thanks for that input.
Regarding ziplocs - I use them mainly for freezing IQF (individually quick frozen) fruits like blueberries, or meat patties that I want to stack in the freezer. If they stored meat or something that has an odor (cooked hamburger with onions), I toss them. Otherwise, I generally wash them out and re-use them (and also the plain one gallon plastic bags) if they only had produce in them.
Remember when we were kids, leftovers in the fridge were stored in glass bowls with plastic "caps" pulled down over them? Circles of plastic with elastic around the edges. Always washed and reused. I've been looking for them, mostly finding flimsy plastic ones that won't hold up to many washings. If they are opaque, downside is I can't see what's in the bowls like I can when using plastic film and not sure how they'd hold up sticking the item in the microwave (I don't, DH does at times... ) But if a person doesn't have a lot of leftovers that get lost, I think they'd work out fine. Update: I see them on Amazon described as "elastic reusable bowl covers" but they look pretty flimsy. The silicone ones look interesting....
I've also seen do-it-yourself bowl covers and sandwich wrappers made from muslin or cotton cloth saturated with a bit of beeswax. Wipe clean with a soapy cloth to keep the beeswax there = no hot water/immersion wash. I have beeswax and cloth around here, I need to dig it out and try it.
I found a link, there are many: https://mindfulmomma.com/diy-beeswax-wraps/
Thanks for the inspiration!
By the way, have you heard from Cheri lately? I think about her sometimes with her new house and son in Chicago and DD living out by you.

I just switched to clean, renewable energy electricity source. In France the vast majority of electricity is nuclear. With a call I just switched to a green energy source (recommended by Greenpeace) with hydro and wind power. Same price or possibly 6 euro savings in the year. Easy ecology.0

Oh lord have I made a mess of things.. will talk with a financial advisor soon..
I have never had a mortgage on my own in my life, and have messed it up royally, I dont know escrow from principal and all insurances taxes etc....
so I owe $3500.00 in escrow , and they never sent my updated homeowners and HOA insurance to the mortgage company so somehow they have a $3000.00 policy in place.. Holy Moses..
Well I will get it all straightened out eventually.. thank goodness I am getting some money from dads estate to get that paid off but yikes..
I have bags I take to the grocery store and I bought mesh bags for produce..5 -
Karen VA y everyone interested in no more plastic bags- I used to be zero waste but hubby not into that so my carbon footprint increased! I used to use reusable boa free bags. Theirs also reusable beeswax. Reusable straws now too but be careful do not walk while drinking from a metal straw like anything a fall while walking with a metal object doesn’t end well like a toothbrush sittings is better. Glass y plastic Tupperware are great. My Favorite is the plastic sectional ones can be used to store in freezers for prepared meals like making TV dinners reheat 5-7minutes foods ready to go.

@Machka9 yes I'm allowed to walk, thank goodness! It sounds like your commuting time is a boon.
@cityjaneLondon I don't know David Attenborough's show on plastic but it sounds like it was very effective. I don't buy much anymore. One could say it's cheap, or poor or lazy or a mix of the above, but it has the plus side of low consumerism. I'm pushing It to the limit with clothes. Someone said a Boston saying (that I have never heard of in Boston but doesn't sound totally far fetched is "use it till it's good and worn and then do without". it was decades ago when I heard it. it was not stylish to be so frugal/cheap/economical, as it is more now. I get some foods package free, but buy some other things. I tried a recommended carbon footprint calculator and (tho they are not very accurate) my footprint is down lower than ever, at about 1.6 planets. 1st time ever. Yay. Not to be a wet blanket but are you sure it's ok to run if your knee is clicky? I can certainly relate to missing running.
@LisaInAR so true about changing things for health : coffee, wine. I remember eating margarine in the 90s even though we preferred butter. now "they" say butter is better. jeeze.
@LuciBThinner Great job on maintaining during the trip. I bought a metallic (Indian type) lunch-ish container online but it seems iffy in terms of closing well. glass ones seem good for home things.2 -
Having trouble with sweet tooth get sugar free low calories ice creams to pudding y jellos. Sweet apples 🍎 or fruit in your salad (I love cucumber, tomato,y Apple tossed in a salad I even heat up a little spinach leaves to put on top of I feel like it).Nuts with fruit. It’s a treat without throwing you off too much. Then can wing yourself off or do that when needing a sweet. Can also get your containers out (Tupperware or reusable ziplock) premeasure out a sweet snack like fruit with nuts y yogurt then put it in the refrigerator to grab when needed.

Hi! I’m a teacher so Augustis a good time to reflect.
July 31 weight: 140.5
June 30 weight: 135
Challenge: I’ve gained 5.5 pounds in one month and trending up since late April after maintaining for over six months. Usual reasons: not weighing in, not logging food, and emotional eating (mostly my frenemies Ben and Jerry).
Credit: To give myself credit, I am still within normal range according to the BMI chart and I have been at a normal weight for about a year now. I have all the tools I need to reverse this trend and get back to my goal range.
August goals:
1. Meditate daily
2. Log in food choices daily on MBT.
3. Weigh in weekly
4. Sweets are portion-controlled and limited to no more than 1-2 times a week.
5. Lose at least three pounds this month.
6. Exercise at least ten minutes 5x a week.
7. Practice self-compassion daily.2 -
With my Daughter I used to use cloth diapers but 20yrs ago nobody knew what they were anymore. So to leave the house disposable since everyone frowned upon breastfeeding y cloth diapers in public so much. I was young well let the bullies back me into a corner. I still remember my washing machine always had bleach y detergent sitting in it would toss the dirty diapers in to sit. Drain y turn it on same time every morning hang them on the line as I got eggs from the free range chickens.Fed leftovers to the Dog,cats,y chickens so really wasn’t any food waste at all since I squeezed every ounce of food out of everything I cooked even the bone got used for soup before the dog y cats got it. Had a compost pile y garden. Old potatoes from the store got planted to enrich my soil y produce a new potato or two which I cut up for my chickens 🐓 with giant cans of hominy to put weight in them .I used to recycle ♻️ get money for everything I couldn’t reuse. Was living the way my Native American relatives y grandpa taught me. Even a rock had its purpose.
Now with JR disposable I found the csection/after surgeries having to rely on others for help it was just impossible to expect others who are older y working to not just take care of baby but to also do cloth diapers, rinsing out stuff,y hanging clothes on the line. I still use y reuse ziplocks to Tupperware even boxes. We still recycle ♻️ but the darn plastic/paper disposable cup makes their way in the trash with no thinking about it. I bought hubby reusable coffee baskets but he insists on putting a paper filter in them sigh* I tried. We lived off disposable ramen noodle cups after JR for over a year! Takeout 🥡 (yes lol that’s why my weight never came off after csection). JR uses so much lotion I don’t have time to wash y reuse .I used to reuse a lot of stuff. Even got a garage full of reusable store bags ,but Hubby does the shopping y goes with me Well his pride won’t let me hang clothes outside or use a old reusable shopping bag in public (lol guess it’s a city thing this country gal misses seeing neighbors with their clothing lines up sheets in the breeze!) .For a year now been getting off convenient foods back into cooking full time more! Except pizza cause JR goes through I will only eat pizza phases still. Now hopefully as JRs getting older more changes to save environment to money.I’m finally after 2yrs 3months healing plus the past 2 months of my first finally can exercise moments.Hubby gets it more now so energy efficient appliances to well lol even he’s using store plastic bags for diapers to carry stuff to work. Were finding middle ground. I still remember my grandmas y mom reusing coffee tins to butter containers as Tupperware lol.If you tossed one you committed a crime in their eyes! Lol even church to school functions I remember moms arriving cookies in old tins to butter containers. Now folks wouldn’t eat it if they saw that.Society is more picky. Hubby paid extra for bigger recycle ♻️ cans lol neighborhood (keeping up with them Emilio’s (Jones) we joke) all bought bigger ones too lol so We did get all the neighbors to recycle ♻️ more lol 😂 maybe that will even stuff out.I started potty training at 6months so that’s less diapers every time he willing to go. Went a whole day/night using no diapers a few times. Rest of the time I get the famous 2yr old NO. Lol

Lanette
Lanette Beeswax idea is interesting and novel in a vintage-appealing sort of way.
Cheri was apparently actually here near me for several weeks while her daughter was recuperating from surgery, but didn't contact me, so I'm thinking they were really busy - and my suspicion is reinforced by a recent Facebook post that indicates that Cheri's daughter decided to sell her home and move to Texas to be near her parents! So I think they've been recuperating and packing and getting the daughter's home on the market, and figuring how to get the kitties moved from Virginia to Texas. That's my best guess. Their son who was living near them has now moved away again - job related - but I can't remember if it was to Ohio or Chicago or...anyway, their lives seem full and busy, and as far as I can tell, she is happy & doing well.

Allie I am surprised they didn't have the escrow as part of your mortgage payment. The escrow is to pay your property taxes. Because you have a mortgage you have to have insurance on your home. It is like you have to have collision on your auto if you take a loan out on your car.
Your realtor should have gone through this with you at the closing of your townhome. Your payment should include both your insurance and property tax (escrow) Here in Minnesota they used to tack on another fee if you did not put 20% down. Also part of your mortgage payment. Insurance might be paid separately. That is usually a yearly bill. To lower that insurance bill ask for a high deductible. We did that on our and our son's home. We figured we would not make a claim unless the house burned down. If you make a claim your rates go up. In doing this we saved about $1000 between the two homes. They have the insurance in place because they are protecting the money they lent you. You may need to show them yearly proof that you paid for insurance if you are allowed to find your own insurance.
I know from buying son's home last year if they can tack on a fee the do. Here in Minnesota we have to pay property taxes twice a year. Your escrow account is supposed to handle that for you. (for a fee)You have owned the town home for over a year. We pay taxes in October and May here. Strange they are just alerting you about this now. Before you do anything make sure it is not a scam.
I know I got a very official document that said for $75 they would get me a title to the property I bought. I contacted my realtor and it was a scam.
First thing I would do is talk to the realtor that sold you the townhome or the mortgage company. I would also see if there is a way to lower that insurance bill. Unless you dispute the value of your town home not much you can do about property taxes. Unfortunately that $3500 sounds about right for yearly taxes. That means about $300 of your mortgage payment should be for that escrow.
If they just made your payments based of the mortgage itself you relator did not help you find you something in your price range.
According to what you said $550 is what your insurance and taxes are above what the loan payment is per month. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. That insurance amount is outrageous.
Here in Minnesota we can get some relief on our taxes by applying for a homeowners credit. They pay this August. You do have to fill out the paperwork to get it. This too could save you about a $1000-$1500.

Happy August! I didn't stat it off right. Forgot to take my morning meds yesterday. Being Type 2 and Sjogren's it is not good to forget meds. Hopefully back on track today. Beautiful sunshine and low humidity! Enjoy!1

@JRsLateInLifeMom it sounds like you do what you can to be ecological. it also seems to go in waves, in terms of society. I remember some guy in the oughts (2000s) said that he was certain organic food was a fad. au contraire! food with pesticides is a fad, only been around a few decades after milleniums without it. same for plastic...
I find it hard to not have any food packaging, though...baby steps.1 -
Banana and oranges- so true so true when Daughter was born 20yrs ago everyone loved hand me downs I could trade clothes for others with moms I didn’t even know at events! Traded baby food Daughter hates for another mom’s stash so she saved money y I got what she needed! Swap shops had it all! Now I had a new baby bed JR outgrew in 3months after purchase it didn’t get used because Mother-in-law’s y me found (both csection moms) that the bassinet changing table was easier to use. Tried to give it to a young 18yr old 2nd cousin (exspensive heavy mattress because JRs weight was already 20lbs) she turned it down like I was offering trash 🗑 to her.Suprised me she was pregnant with a baby JRs age too! Instead she went bought a new cheaper one(mine was still in plastic so it was also new!) .Told My Mother-in-law had her take it to her sisters store in Mexico it sold for top dollar 💵 folks bidding higher than her sticker price to get it! Think she got $100 for it or more which is almost the sticker price for a Serta! ($150 + tax). They act like his new unworn baby clothes with tags attached are be neath them! So sold them y gifted them to relatives less picky. Guess like you say it’s waves maybe next generation will be more fugal than the milinials. I love eBay y swap shops don’t see the point of buying new for full price if I can get it on sale or cheaper.

Meg: Be kind to yourself. Let MFP set your calorie goals and stick within the limits. Some things do wonders of filling an empty tummy without adding many calories. Celery is a fabulous choice. It takes more calories to digest fresh celery that the celery contains. Herbal tea is a great choice, too. I like Celestial Seasonings peppermint best, but there are other wonderful choices. I don’t know anything about phentamine. :flowerforyou:
Sue in WA: You have a health minded varmint stealing your carrots, or one that loves the sugar they contain. Do you have a box with a snap on lid to keep your treats for the horses in? They’d be safe from other critters.
Evie Vancouver Island: Logging food is an essential element for success. Moving more is another essential. You are off to a great start.
Connie in KY: “We put the fun in dysfunctional.” I love your wry humor. I hope things continue on a positive path. :flowerforyou:
Irish Terri: WTG!!! You’re doing so well!
Lisa: I love your advice to the newbies. We don’t have to reply to everyone, every day. We do need to count calories every day in order to make good choices and get rid of unwanted pounds, IMHO. CICO=Calories In, Calories Out.
Heather: I baby my bad knee by making knee friendly exercise choices. My bad knee will not heal beyond what it has done. Yoga, riding a bike, & riding a horse are all great exercises. The only time I will run is to protect or help a loved one. The horse riding is the biggest knee challenge for me. Most riders post at a trot to reduce the pounding it creates. I let my backside take the pounding rather than abuse my bad knee. You love to dance. Does dancing bother your knee? I hope not.
Lanette: I never ice my knee. I don’t know whether it would be a help or not. I mostly ignore the discomfort in my bad knee and avoid pounding exercises like jogging. The injury is in the cartilage between the lower leg and thigh of my left leg. The doctor told me to strengthen my leg muscles and live with it. :ohwell:
Yoga today and it is time for me to get going!!! I hope all of you have a good day.

Good Morning ....It's August!
I fell off track about a year ago and it wasn't until I went to try on a cute little summer dress that I realized it was time to get back on track.
The goals I plan to reach by the end of the year are lofty but doable as long as I keep focused. Today was day 4 and I am feeling so darn good. I just want to keep feeling this good and stay on track today and forever.
Goal #1 - To look good in that cute little summer dress and to fit comfortably in all my clothes.
Goal #2 - To find a way to exercise and eat right on the weekends when I am with my fiancé. The week days are pretty easy to manage, it is the weekends that are difficult. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
