Apple shaped disaster

I’m apple shaped/ inverted triangle. Weight is all in middle. Wider shoulders. Nicer legs. I’ll lose weight in my legs but middle is still so disproportionate. Can I change my shape? Is it even possible? What are the best fitness goals to focus on with this problem?
Thanks

Hello!
We can't really control where our body loses weight, and for many people the stomach area is the last to lose it. That's not a disaster, that's nature.
If you're at a healthy/comfortable weight, you could try a recomp:

How much are you trying to lose? If you're not at goal yet, keep going. Open up your diary so others can help you with your logging accuracy.2

You can work and lose weight but if your wanting a more desired shape then nip tuck is the only way. I am thinking about that once at goal and sometimes you just have to be happy with what is14
-
Well, lose the weight and you'll look more proportional, and if you have wider shoulders you can do resistance exercises that increase your lower body and nip in your waist, so once you are at a healthy weight you'd have a more hourglassed shape.
But yes, lose the weight and the middle will go...usually last, but it will go!5 -
Another apple here - saddle bags (fat deposits high on my hip bone/middle) are the last thing to go on me. At goal weight, I won't be "curvy" but my shape looks good. Issue is, I need to be at goal weight - right up to the finish line my shape is what it is.
In the meantime I keep on working out, lifting, and enjoying the muscles and definition I'm uncovering - and showing off my legs and arms (my shoulders are also broad, but develop muscle nicely IMO). My body will never have a super "feminine" shape, but I've learned to love it for what it lets me do.8 -
I am this shape, too. I lost 70 pounds and I kept pretty much the same shape. Since we have apples and pears I like to call myself a tortilla chip. It’s not so bad. We can rock a halter!12
-
Same! Always the last place I lose too. Does anyone have any good at home exercises that target the lower/midsection?0

Don't ever refer to yourself as a disaster. 💟16

I lost about 30. I just feel like a big marshmallow with frog legs.
I understand where you're coming from because I have definitely been there! I still feel insecure about my body! I have loose skin, especially around my stomach. All I can say is keep going as best you can and don't insult yourself. Stop calling yourself names, because every time you do you believe it more. Even if you have to fake it.7 -
You can’t change your overall shape, that’s genetics. Losing weight, gaining strength, building muscle etc. are all great goals, but you must also learn to love your body. I have come to terms with the short, stumpy legs I was born with, for example, because they are healthy and strong and get me where I need to go. I wish I had long, slender legs like Kate Middleton but it ain’t gonna ever happen. My legs do look better after weight loss and lifting, though.3

I am also an apple tortilla chip. In the past when I was slimmer it was much less noticable and I was actually quite happy with my shape but now at a heavier weight I feel quite self conscious about it. My upper body and stomach are so disproportionally bigger than my lower body and I try to disguise it with the clothes I wear. Anyway. My point is with overall weight loss I’ve found it to be much less noticable.0

You can't spot reduce fat.2 -
ill swap you your apple for my pear lol. no matter how slim i get - unless i am borderline underweight and watching every calorie, i have shapeless legs with cellulite, no bosoms. perhaps you have an unrealistic idea of what a 'woman looks like" the normal woman comes with stretch marks, cellulite, veins where you dont want them, bosoms that the media would have us believe are abnormal etc etc.10

oh, and to answer your question, not sure about fitness goals, but if you are genuinely carry excess weight in your middle this can be somewhat dangerous healthwise as it can indicate fat around your internal organs. so i would say fitness/healthwise, maintain a healthy diet and exercise routine, work on losing weight healthily if you are overweight. see your doctor....etc0

What is your height and weight?
How much more weight (if any) are you trying to lose?
What exercise are you currently doing?0 -

Wow. Nothing like a bit of body shaming with my morning coffee!
FWIW, I am also an inverted triangle and I think I rock it.13 -

Hi. I’m 168.5. Down from 196 when I started eating paleo in December. I just got out of the “obese” BMI category. I’m 5 ft 6.
I’m not focused on a number for weight loss. I’m focused on being in better shape, getting rid of this high risk abdominal area, and try to get my body to look less top heavy.
Exercise I walk about 3-5 times a week. I was doing elliptical/ stairs before that but I hurt my ankle and was advised to wait until it is better- which it is. Cardio makes my legs drop weight. Then I really look like a circle with stick legs. I used to do body pump- I like it but hard to find classes with my work schedule. I need a trainer or a gym- I can’t rely on tv or internet to get me to exercise.

Okay, so you still have some weight to lose. You just have to keep going. It is not uncommon for the midsection to be the last to go, and to actually look worse in the middle of the process as the rest of you slims down.
I'd strongly suggest finding a way to focus on strength training if you can, it can really do wonders for your aesthetics as you slim down. Hang in there!

I am grateful for my health and that I have legs to carry me, but the bottom line is that as a woman, I feel I don’t look like a woman. I don’t have low self esteem, I try to eat very healthy. To me- a woman can be big or small- but the apple shape isn’t feminine to me. It’s the most unattractive shape. When I say it’s a disaster- it’s because it’s true. We all learn to accept what we can’t change- but that doesn’t mean the truth changes. Being shaped like a circle or a tortilla chip is unattractive.
Damn, well. I hope you can come to terms with yourself because genetics isn't something you can change. Maybe you need to learn to expand your personal definitions of beauty and femininity. Best of luck to you.7 -
Get down to goal weight, then focus on gaining a lot of leg muscle to get the proportions you want7

So, I’m not an apple, more like an hour glass I guess, but saying apples are not feminine and the most unattractive shape is just not very nice. There are probably others on here who are struggling with accepting their apple shape just like you are and calling yourself unattractive and not feminine because of that shape doesn’t help you or them.
Everyone struggles with body image from time to time. We can all be beautiful, but it’s a bit silly to think we’d all be able to look the same, or even want to.
I imagine your shape is not as bad as you think it is, and you are not a disaster. Most people, especially women, are far more critical of themselves than other people are. Maybe cut yourself some slack. It sounds like you’ve already accomplished SO MUCH and need to be proud of yourself instead of calling yourself a disaster.9 -

First, I’m not calling myself, or my accomplishments, or my life a disaster. I’m calling the actual struggle of being an apple shape a disaster because it is. It’s harder to lose, it’s harder to fit in clothes, it’s harder to hide your big belly, it’s harder to attract a mate, the risk for many diseases is increased with apple genetics.
Yes it’s a disaster. Yes it’s unfortunate. I’m not sure why anyone would want these problems, but we don’t have a choice. Yes I can be grateful for many other things I have in life- but ultimately your body is the most important thing. You need it to bear children, to live, to breathe, to walk. If you have so many things against you- you don’t want to hear others simply say, “oh you should be grateful” or “ just accept it.”
No- I don’t have to and I can dislike this part of my life.

While you can’t spot reduce, you can strengthen the muscles of your core in a way that may reduce your waist circumference by helping you have better posture and hold your belly in. I’m not an apple, but I do have a big belly which I tend to stick out in front of me, and core exercises helped my appearance a lot. Heavy compound lifts work your core, and I also really like my ab roller for core strength - they are very inexpensive, and if you don’t want to buy one you can also do ab rollouts using a dumbbell. Take some photos from the side and look at your posture, if you tend to stand with your pelvis tilted forward, work on that.
As far as disasters go, broad shoulders look great in halters! Every shape has advantages as well as disadvantages. It’s natural to hate your own disadvantages because you are more aware of them. Just remember to look for the good as well.6 -
I too am an inverted triangle and apple shaped. I have a B belly too.
By the time I hit my mid 50’s I was in the worst shape, and looked the worst, of my life.
Bordering on overweight but carrying most of that weight front and forward, especially the upper ‘belly’ region, I decided to do something about it.
Counting my cals and starting to exercise for the first time in my life took me back to the weight I had been earlier but with a better body composition.
It took a year, to get my weight down and progressively increase my fitness level. That year gave me a healthy body, and a sculpted body.
10 years later and I still, through diet and exercise, have a healthy, sculpted body- not one like a fitness model, one that I find easy to maintain, admire, and dress.
If you don’t like where you are now, start losing some weight and incorporate some cardio and strength training into your daily life.
Being an inverted triangle, apple shaped, B bellied, small breasted, flat bottomed, slim legged person is who I am on the outside, it suits me, and says nothing about who I am on the inside.
I’ve always had this figure, I don’t know how I would dress any other kind of figure.
(For those who recognize me, no need to click the spoiler )The first pic is me at 54. All the rest were taken in my 60’s.
Not the body of a young woman but with work that ‘apple’ has improved
Just to show that the apple shape isn’t the end of the world as far as dressing to please yourself goes.
Be the best you can be. It takes work and dedication, but well worth it.
Cheers, h.

Thank you! It’s great hearing your story! That bikini pic is fabulous. One day perhaps...

I could have wrote this myself! I gain weight in my belly first and legs last, lose “weight” in my legs first while the belly is dead last to go! My mama has got this shape, and heck even my dad has this shape...genetics hit me twice, lol. It eventually will go down as you lose more and more weight so hang in there.
Is this my dream shape? Heck no, I’d love to look like an hour glass! I’m built like Gaston. But darnit if I don’t have the best legs in the state! 😉
Celebrate what you love in the meantime. Being feminine or looking feminine is not purely your shape. It’s the way you carry yourself, the vibe you send out, how you take care of yourself, and interact with others.7 -
Girls!! Idk If in Apple shaped.. this is my body type... can anyone relate?
