Holly, I too lost my son to suicide. Counseling really didn't help me (just saying) but a grief share group helped me tremendously as well as a suicide grief group. www.griefshare.com can show you where a local group is in your area. Talking and acknowledging your feelings is the best therapy for a loss such as this. Being with a group of folks who understand what you are experiencing is therapeutic. I've made many friends from the group. It's been 12 years but I still miss him. This weekend his grandchildren who he never got to see are on vacation at the beach. The youngest daughter is a spitting image of my son and she gives me great joy. as do the other two. My heart goes out to you. May God's peace cover you with love

@katrena--Welcome back!!
@catherine-- Great job resisting the doughnuts! We often have those floating around the office as well. My trick is to tell myself I can have one after lunch. It's amazing how unappetizing they are after they've been picked over and are starting to go stale. I usually end up passing them up at that point. I saw the boys from that movie on Colbert earlier this week--they were very cute and the movie looks funny.
To answer your earlier questions, the listing of weekly weight started as a challenge a long time ago, and a bunch of us in this thread used to do it. Now, I think we just continue as a way to track and work toward individual goals.
I weigh myself every morning and then I post my lowest weight from that week as my Saturday weight. I used to be scale obsessed--I would weigh myself multiple times a day and stress over every ounce--so I did some research and learned 2 things: 1. Healthy-weight/fit people weigh in daily; it helps them maintain the healthy weight 2. it's normal for weight to fluctuate as much as 5 lbs from one day to the next based on sodium, hydration, sleep, etc. Based on that information, early in my weight loss journey I started weighing in once (and only once) each day, first think in the morning, and would only record a new weight in MFP when it went below my previous low weight. It really helped me lose the obsession and get used to the normal fluctuations. I started paying more attention to the broader trend of the scale moving down from week to week and month to month. Long story short, my advice is weigh-in daily and record weekly.
@holly-- Yay for the 1 lb loss! I'm glad the work with your pup is going well. What kind is he and how old?
AFM-- I had a really good week--ate reasonably and went to the gym 3 times. Finally saw 194 on the scale again this week too!
Catherine asked about challenges, and that reminded me that it's a new month and our water challenge is over. What do people want to do for September? Maybe an exercise challenge? Since we all do different workouts, maybe we can set our own goals (x steps/day, # of walks/week, gym visit x times/week, etc.). Share your ideas so we can get started toward success!!

Sorry for this, but question here... How do I respond to a member's post without quoting the entire post? Like when you can just have @ then the users name?? Is there a shortcut?0
-
@dustyspal I think that if you put @ in front of their username it tags them so they get an notification on top of the home board. That way you can hit the notification and it will take you right to the message
@skinnyjeanzbound I vote for number of workouts (your own definition of that, walk, exercise, run, etc...) since that is what I am trying to encourage myself to do. Also I only weigh myself once a day wearing the same thing at the same time so it is consistent. I like to do it first thing in the morning.
Went for my walk with my granddaughter today and she totally quit on me. 3/4 mile in she starts saying that she is tired and this isn't fun anymore. I tried to tell her that it get easier the more she does it. I told her she doesn't have to come with me. She says it is too hot. Maybe she will come again when it is cooler. I wish she was older so we could go to a gym when it is this hot. The community center requires that the kids be at least 12 and within arms reach of the adult. She is only 10.
Sunday Sharing:
I'm a little glad my genaddaughter isn't coming with me. I love her but I think she was slowing me down. I can't talk while running and I think she was bored. I liked having someone to exercise with but not necessarily run beside and she is too young for me to have out of eyesight. Maybe I will have to find things we can do, we are still playing volleyball.

Good morning everyone, happy Monday! Since it looks like Mondays are for check-ins, I'll share a success from the long weekend. I went up to NYC for a couple of days, I used to work in Manhattan and go back a few times a year to check out all my old haunts... for the first time EVER, I was able to walk around the city all day without getting winded and didn't need an afternoon nap to recharge before going out for the evening. I walked everywhere instead of taking cabs -- 10 miles in a day and a half. I loved it. Losing a few pounds certainly helped, but I know it's going to the gym 2-3x/week that's been the biggest factor.
@cjbrummet and @KATRENAJ - so sorry to read of your losses, and thinking of you today.2 -
@dustyspal- I just write up my replies and copy them to my post
@katrenaj- suppourt group helped alot for me but I have other family issues that counseling is for. I lost my son same way. Sorry to hear of your loss.

@skinnyjeanzbound – Thanks for the welcome back. I think exercise goals would be great. Just getting back into exercise after an accident but anything to encourage me to get moving
@midmodjen – Thanks for your kind thoughts. I am so happy for you. Being able to wander in comfort is fantastic.
I spent 5 weeks in Europe and I had to sit down often, Luckily there are benches in most public areas and street in Spain and France and Russia had lots of parks and coffee shops and even anti-cafes (places where you could get free drinks and snacks and just paid a small fee for time spent there. They offered reading materials, games and even art supplies. Many Russians go there to meet others and to sharpen their foreign language skills.) We even found a cat café where cats were served foot and given nice windows to lay in and humans were given coffee. Pretty cool!

@cjbrummet Your granddaughter reminds me of my oldest son at that age. My Dad took him for a bike ride and he complained the whole time 😂 it was boring, it was too far, it was too much work, etc etc. But ODS (older dear son) has ADHD and we gave him a choice since it was summer—bike ride with Grandpa because the exercise helped take the hyperactivity or he could take his meds (it was summer break so he didn’t need them for school but boy oh boy was that kid hyped up without them!). He chose bike rides and my poor Dad was a saint for taking him and listening to the complaints 😂😂. And then one day ODS comes home really super excited because they rode eleven whole miles and he was only ten so he rode more miles than his age! The complaining ended but the “can we go farther? How many miles more did we do today?” started 😉
He’s 14 now and we live several states away so we don’t get to see my parents often but ODS still talks about how great those bike rides with Grandpa were. He doesn’t remember the complaining but he sure does remember the special time he spent riding with Grandpa 🙂3 -
I remember when I was here the first time and I would read the stories of people that gained back the weight and I would think how did you allow that to happen?! Oh well ... now I am in the same boat ... have not gained all back, but 2/3!!! Now I know how they “allow” that to happen .... everything tastes better with a side of French fries and a pint of Ben and Jerry’s
So here I am again trying to get back into the the discipline of MFP, eating healthy and working out.
Needless to say don’t let my story discourage you ... MFP is a great tool and this group helped me tons , so that is why I am back ... I know it works!

@ana-- Welcome back!! Your post rings true for me--I would see other people starting over after regaining significant weight and hope I wouldn't fall into that trap. Well, I'm fortunate that I only gained about 20 lbs, but that was still a third of my original loss of 60 lbs. Now I'm just 10 lbs away from my previous low, but I feel like I've been stuck here in the 190s forever. We both did it before and we can do it again!!
@hazel-- that's great that your son got to spend such quality time with his grandpa.
@holly-- what a beautiful dog!! Gunner is also a shepherd mix, so I'm a bit biased.
@jenn-- congrats on your NSV in NYC!! It's so great when our hard work pays off in a tangible way. Seeing the scale go down is nice, but it's the NSVs that really matter.
@dustyspal -- yes, @ plus the user name tags the person. I try to use people's real names in this thread if they've shared them; it doesn't tag them, but I think it makes it more personal.
Sounds like everyone is up for an exercise challenge for September, so here it goes:
Set your own weekly exercise goal and track your progress for the month
AFM-- I'm going to struggle to meet my goal this week. I went to the gym Saturday, skipped yesterday, and then realized a bit too late in the day that my gym was closing at 3 for the holiday today. I will go for sure tomorrow and Saturday, but Wed I have a dentist appointment right after work, and Thurs I have open house at school. I hate working out on Fridays, but I may have to if I don't have time to go after my dentist appointment on Wed.
I'm also having a calorie crisis, in that, I wish I had more available. I ate leftover pizza for breakfast, and then my husband grilled burgers for dinner. That wouldn't have been so bad, but he made them at like 4 pm which is way earlier than I usually eat dinner. After the burger I was still kind of hungry, but I want some ice cream for dessert. I've been trying to keep myself busy knowing that if I eat the ice cream too early, I will want another snack later because I don't go to bed until 11 or 12. It's now 7 pm and if I can hold off for another hour, I should be good. I know this isn't really a crisis, but the longer I spend on my laptop rambling on about it to you guys, the more time I'll waste. LOL

This is the third day of performing one hour of exercise. I am actually feeling better but the first day I was sure I was up to it. Some shoulder pain but go to PT tomorrow
Holly – love that dog. Lucky you, you have to exercise. I’m thinking of getting one myself, but smaller, We are stronger than we think.
Hazel - It's so good to get to spend time with the grandkids. They grow up so fast
Karen – Assume new challenge starts on 9/1?

About me. My name is Diane and I will be 58 next Sunday. I am overweight and need to lose about 100 pounds (that looks terrible in writing). I've been overweight since my 30's. Getting married and having kids - somehow it just creeped up on me. I was very active growing up but them I got a job and got married. Having a sit down job for the past 25 years hasn't helped. I admit it. I'm lazy. I don't like to exercise and I now I must. I can't say I've had an emotional experience that made me eat - the reality is I just like food. I need to change my thought process that I only need to eat food to survive and if it taste good - hurray. Watching portion size has helped me in the past, so doing that now. I really love using the food journal (diary). I actually input my daily meals before I eat them, so I can see where I might go over - and remove it before it goes in my mouth. Now - I just need to stick to the meals I planned - I've noticed that I can eat - no problem - within my calorie limit. So it's the unplanned B,L and T's that add up. That's Bites, Licks, and Tastes. If you log them (you can't leave them off) you'll have that "AH HA" moment. They really do add up.
Challenge accepted for the month of September. I'll modify it a bit for myself - but some type of exercise every day. One modification I need to add is to do my physical therapy exercises for my back. I suffer from sciatica and it affects about everything I do. When I do the exercises it helps - and I actually sweat a bit too (because I'm so out of shape). More walking. It's a beautiful night tonight, so will be able to take a walk this evening.
I'm also going to keep the water challenge - so two goals for me per day. I need the water challenge because I still don't drink enough water.
Cheer to everyone - happy to see new faces.

Last month's water challenge was a real eye-opener for me. I told a co-worker that I've been drinking water, ONLY, since July 24! I never used to drink water, now it's what I do. No more iced tea! Strange. I don't really have a desire to drink anything else. Plus, I'm drinking at least 64 oz daily!! Yea me!!4
-
Exercise challenge: I'm going to start doing stairs at work. I usually don't have a need to take stairs because everything I really need is on one floor. Soooo, stairs it is. Plus,I hate stairs, which is more reason for me to do it.1
-
@sweetypie1- I understand about the no motivation part. Maybe start simple with something like body groove videos. I also didn’t realize how fast things added up when I first started.
@dustyspal- congrats on drinking more water.
@karen and katrena- thats for the dog comments. He is a handful due to me lack of follow through. The behavioralist gave me great tips and seen a big improvement when walking.
@happygirlxxx- You got this and your story is reality not a discouragement.
My Fitness Challenge: sit ups
I Hate them cuz I can’t do them.
I will do crunches (40) or ab machine at gym each day (80).

Hey guys! Just a quick check in. I waited until 8 pm to eat that ice cream, but then after having one serving of my planned flavor (Ben & Jerry's Brewed to Matter), I caved and tried a bit of the other seasonal flavor I bought (Glampfire Trail Mix). Both were delicious BTW. So I was 180 over my allowance. Today has been much better--I'm already over 100 grams of protein and I still have plenty of calories for an evening snack.
I also made it to the first of my 3 gym visits for the week.

@happygirlxxx I think we have all been there. You can do this, you did it before you can do it again.
Welcome back everyone who has been away. It is good seeing all the posts on this board.
I am excited about the challenge. I plan to workout or go for walks/runs three times a week. I am actually up to two miles now. OK most of it was walking, but it is a step in the right direction. Everytime I run a little further and the overall distance is getting longer. I think I should be able to handle the 5K by the 14th, especially if I'm only walking the whole thing not running.

Hi am another newbie.
I've today come to the stark realisation I am in the 100lb to lose camp.
I've lost 40-50 lb in the past. Never this much.
I'm on mental health medication that can lead to diabetes, heart disease. And Weight gain.. I've gained 56lb or more since I started on them.
I'm hiding from the camera and my 9 year old is picking up on my self consciousness. I hate that. Makes me so sad.
I have a date in November I would like to feel a bit better for. So that is an initial focus.

Hey Gang!
I have not been posting my stats weekly like I should... but I have been enjoying reading about everyone's progress, goals and motivations. What a great group!
Welcome back to @happygirlxxx !!! I hear you, Girl. I am fighting like mad not to regain weight but it seems like I am starting to let all the bad habits seep into my daily routine. I am up in weight and gonna try again to put my motivation in the right place. Today... it's almost 4pm and I've stuck to the program pretty well. Hope to make it through the rest of the day.

Hello,
New to the thread. 5'1"
Restarting weight: 252 (Never weighed at my highest, but I think this is pretty close.)
Current weight: 242
Goal weight: 140 (Hoping to get there in 2 years, but if it takes 10, I don't really care anymore.)
"Healthy weight": Somewhere between 98-132 pounds supposedly (though I will likely weigh more if I get back into strength training).
Hit rock bottom, still kinda hanging out there, but getting more and more health problems, so here's to trying to get back on this train. Never have hit 150 as an adult (I honestly haven't spent much time below 180 in the past either), so it would be kinda neat to make goal. Don't feel a ton of motivation or excitement at present, but maybe that's OK. Have to start somewhere/sometime.4 -
Strrggling to meet goals. Have been super busy. Dr's apptmts for phsical theraphy and school two nights a week. Today I had to sit in on juvenile court cases as part of my training to be a volunteer Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) for abused and neglected children who have been removed from their homes. My job is to make sure they are receiving all the services they need and to provide support and work towards possible reuniting them with their families or seeking permanent placement with them so they do not remain in the foster system. I'm excited about being able to make a difference, but the training is much more detailed and involved than I imagined.
Have to follow a low fiber diet (no raw foods) until after Monday when I have a colonscopy. I am using this as an excuse to cheat big time. Silly isnt it?
My friends took me out for my birthday tonight since I'll be at hosital Monday.

@PorfforBat- welcome. hope you find this group helpful.
@MelodiousMermaid- welcome. Best way to start getting motivated is to set small goals at first and remember it is one day at a time.
@katrenaj- Your job sounds interesting and challenging all in one. That was great of your friends.
AFM: Friday
I am trying to eat at home more to get healthy. It is hard to cook for one. Weekend is usually my cheat day so I really don’t prepare much.

Hello All!
@KATRENAJ how interesting and rewarding what you are doing! Hope everything goes well with your class and soon you are helping those families.
@mnwalkingqueen I am there with you cooking for 1 is hard … I try to cook and freeze to have something ready for those days that I didn’t feel like cooking … I always had some type of crustless quiche as well as a soup … easy to reheat and flavorful. Also, I keep frozen dinners for emergency days … not super healthy, but at least I have something that in less than 5 minutes is ready and that I can control the calories.
Also, you asked about protein / low sodium … all I can think of is chicken and turkey grilled or baked.
@MelodiusMermaid … we all have been where you are now … one step at the time and not self-punishing when there is one or more setbacks … what is important is that you are here and realizing that you need to make the change … and from experience it will not be a linear journey … but with each turn you will learn something to help you move forward and you will see when the lbs disappear how much better you will feel … I remember when I realized I could go up the stairs at home without looking like I have run a marathon … win! Step by step!
@raindogmaa no no … do not let the bad habits into routine … then you allow yourself one here and one there and soon enough the fries and ice cream becomes dinner.
@porfotbat welcome to the group! and I know how it feels to be so uncomfortable with the camera … my facebook account looks like it belongs to my dog, but reality is that I don’t want all my rolls in display … I am not 100% happy how I look, so I don’t need the reminder … however I think we are too harsh sometimes with ourselves … but as I said above, step by step we will loose the weight!
AFM - 7 days of logging and I think I was within my calories most days, so well done to me
Also, I am super proud with myself because instead of my usual junk food binge I controlled my emotions and ate healthy when I was a told that my work contract will end soon … therefore will be unemployed. I have no clue why the sickening relationship with food … stress - eat; bored - eat; sad -eat; happy - eat … but learning to control it.
Ok this post is getting loooongggg …. Have a wonderful weekend everyone, until next time!

@holly-- I often have to cook for one since my husband and I have different tastes in food. I tend to make enough for a couple of meals and divvy it up into single serving tupperware containers. As far as protein, I also struggle to get enough. I don't have issues with sodium, but my go to protein sources other than meat are eggs, cottage cheese, hummus, and greek yogurt. I also like to buy protein rich versions of the snacks I tend to crave. For example, I buy the protein version of nature valley bars (peanut and dark chocolate is my fav), and instead of regular ice cream, I try to buy halo top.
@ana-- sorry to hear about your work contract. Are you in a field that has a lot of other opportunities in Chicago? Good job not eating your feelings!
@katrena-- the volunteer work you are training for sounds wonderful. Good for you!
@MelodiousMermaid --welcome! Yes, you have to start somewhere, and honestly, small steps are probably more sustainable than jumping in head first and fizzling out quickly.
@cyndy-- I hear you. I'm struggling to stick with it for more than a few days at a time. I was doing so well, and finally saw 194 again; then I bought that stupid ice cream, and it reinforced why I can't have real ice cream in my freezer. I ate both pints in a couple of days, going over my calorie allowance in the process. Today the scale said 199--yikes! I haven't seen that number in months. Today I'm over again, but I'm going to do a workout tonight to try to minimize the damage.
@jane-- Welcome to the group! I don't have children, but I really want to be a good role model for my two nieces. I don't want them to have the body image issues I had growing up.
@catherine-- I have no doubt that you can complete your 5k next week if you are fine doing the 2 miles. Another 1.2 miles isn't much. You will crush it!
AFM-- Having a pretty bad day foodwise. I went out with a friend to grade and ate hot wings. I've been having a craving for days, so I figured I would just eat them and be done with it. Well, that was 700 calories I didn't need to eat. At least they are high in protein. On the plus side, I took Gunner for a second walk tonight, but I will need to work out some more to try to reduce my overage. I haven't done a strength training workout in ages, so now seems like a good time to start that up again.
Last week I only got in 2 of my 3 workouts as I feared would happen. This week I will make my goal--Monday, Wednesday, Saturday are my scheduled gym days.

@Happygirlxxx - Good job on not eating your feelings. I have the same relationship with food. Thanks for protein options.

My sucess this weekend was not eating myself into a comma. I found out Friday that my dad has 6-12 months to live. It took a few days to process. I am doing mentally good with the news he has been sick for a few years now.4

@holly-- I'm sorry to hear about your dad, and good for you for not turning to food for comfort.
AFM-- I had a really good work out today--did my usual rowing and elliptical plus 25 minutes on the stationary bike--and did much better with nutrition. Last night I did 20 minutes of strength training, but I was still over my calorie allowance by about 270 calories. At least I was under maintenance...
Tomorrow some of my fellow English teachers and I are going to the movies to watch the livestream from London of Margaret Atwood's release of her new novel, Testaments, which is a sequel to The Handmaid's Tale. We are such nerds!! But seriously, we teach Handmaid's Tale in our junior honors class, so at least we have that as an excuse. Before the theater, we are going to dinner at one of our favorite local restaurants. The food is delicious (Italian), and they have the BEST strawberry basil martinis. I need to really plan my breakfast and lunch to leave myself enough calories to enjoy that outing.
One reason I did a bit more at the gym today is that our wristbands for Ohana Festival came in the mail. I'm so excited!!! I think I will put them somewhere very visible--if I see them every day, maybe they will continue to motivate me to work out harder...

@mnwalkingqueen sorry about your dad ... can only imagine how hard it must be. But well done not using food as coping mechanism!
@skinnyjeanzbound good workouts! Have fun with the theater and dinner ... strawberry basil martinis sound delish!! I must be the only person in this planet that has not read / seen Handmaid Tales ... I have some serious catch up to do!
AFM - during the weekend I went over my calories ... went to dinner on Saturday with some friends and of course at least a cocktail it’s needed but at least tried to compensate with walking so I ended up loosing some lbs this week.
I have started looking for a new job, so met with agencies and it seem they have a couple leads on potential opportunities so we will see ... the market is active, but I suck at interviewing ... so fingers crossed!
