Heather While we're on the topic of blaming people for their medical conditions: not every problem a fat person has is due to his or her obesity. So many people think they are experts on obesity when, in fact, most know very little about it. This, unfortunately, includes a robust number of medical professionals. While it is important to reverse any reversible factors that impact health, I am appalled at the blame & judgment heaped upon fat people, and the thoughtless ease with which fat people are dismissed in many walks of life. Obese people often receive substandard treatment.

I am glad I make y'all smile. I tell people who say I'm a funny thing, that I lived with 2 comedians in the 80's, they conditioned me! A lot of ego in that old rental house!
My eldest Navy son has his physical fitness test this Wednesday, so he went exercising with us yesterday. My son asked if I had ever played Wallyball. I hadn't so he checked out a net and a special volleyball and we headed to the racket ball courts off the main gym. So we put up the net with screw in circle hooks, and start serving the ball back and forth. When its just you and another person, actually keeping the ball in play is nearly impossible! Haahaa! You can use the wall to hit off of, but not the ceiling. After about 6 minutes I was so winded. After 8 minutes I think I mumbled something like, " your momma needs a rest now". Lee opened the door, hit the ball once and his ankle said, " hello", so he bugged out. Well I remember when he broke his ankle in Japan, so I think when he made that same face, I pointed to the door! He's fine, just tweaked it.
My poor son is always going to be border "fat boy program", because they base it on your waist and neck measurements. My son has a normal waist, but a slim neck. So therein lies the problem!
Made pinto bean with 2 ham hocks soup yesterday. 3 cans of beans, about 8 cups of water, fried up the bacon so the ham hocks could get all sauteeing comfortable in the pot. I put in 2 tsps of chicken bouillon paste, and lots of pepper and some seasoning salt. It turned out maaauvalous! Husband brought artisan bread, and I sliced some it. Yep I had a slice with butter. There is something about dipping hearty bread into creamy soup, that does it for me. Today's lunch is leftovers. My soup filled 2 mason jars. Yay!
Today, the gym was packed, some of the squadrons doing testing already. Lots of serious people about.
I walked and went in the sauna.😁 Good side, I checked my blood pressure and I was 120/78. I will take it!
Hugs all around!

Hello everyone,
I'm looking for a supportive community as I restart once again. I'm 52 years old, single mom of a 13 and 8 year old and I live in Mexico. Since I turned 50, I have found it extremely difficult to lose weight. Small changes that would have shown some results in the past do nothing. The weight just won't budge. I tried working with a trainer, and a nutritionist but I definitely self-sabotage, if I have a good day, the next day I will go crazy. And even making good choices for a whole week, I didn't lose a whole pound.
Today, i just started with a prepared meal plan (sort of like Jenny Craig but with all fresh food that gets delivered daily). I'm optimistic because I feel like I won't have so much difficulty with portion size and all the extra temptations. On the other hand, I don't like some of the food and they don't have any desserts at all built in. Today, breakfast was pancakes with nothing on them so I added a tablespoon of low-cal syrup. For lunch I had a salad with tajin (Mexican spice) chickpeas and I don't like tajin so I dumped it and had a tuna lunch to go. So at least it was still a good substitute. Anyway, I'm hoping that I can keep this up for a while and try to make some headway.
So please wish me luck and strength!
Looking forward to getting to know all of you.

I wrote early this month, which now seems like a very long time ago, that my October is busier and more expensive than the December holidays Whew! I've got a lot of catching up to do - pages and pages of them. I think I must be really slow at scrolling through multiple posts and duplicated photos, and that makes me feel intimidated. Do other gals also feel as I do, too?
Anyhoo, a few shout outs . . .
Allie 🙏 prayers for peace to you and your family especially now, after the auto accident. 🙏

Victoria in Dallas My biggest hurdle is stress eating also and not getting enough exercise, too.
SuziQ Thanks for the "6 Tricks for Weight Loss" - It was a very timely (and needed) reminder!
I picked up my car, whose transmission was being replaced, last Thursday evening. It drove great, five miles to a restaurant for dinner with BF and another five miles to home. On Friday morning after driving less than five miles, the dashboard lit up "URGENT TRANSMISSION SERVICE REQUIRED". I pulled to the side of the road and called my mechanic who said to return the car to his shop. The car wouldn't budge, so I had to have it towed - the whole ordeal was a hassle and took up a lot of time. The mechanic kept the car over the weekend and says it runs fine: he can't duplicate what happened when I drove it. I told him to continue to keep it so the issue might reoccur and so he can take care of it. I do not want to pay $4k then have what happened Thursday happen again
Family birthdays on Oct 5th, two on the 9th, one on the 10th, the 12th, and eldest son's on the 14th. I made five b-day cakes and had planned on making the one for my son on Sunday the 13th with my 10 year old DGD. Ingredients for his cost $$$. The plan was made earlier in the week between me and my DIL, so BF and I cleaned house Sat and excused ourselves from a Sunday event invite with friends. Sunday comes and I'm told DGD doesn't feel like coming over, or making a cake for her dad, and that son doesn't want to do anything on his b-day or have anyone come over. I thought it was very odd, but now that "my boy" is an adult with his own family I don't feel it's my place to inquire further or push myself on him and/or his family. The whole thing made me feel weird/sad and still does
Then yesterday, Monday, I learn my insurance agent didn't properly insure the aforementioned vehicle (she applied my money to another of my policies) and said I now need to pay for three months in advance. She blamed the error on the company's computer system, but I have the proof that she made the error. If she had just admitted to making an error, well, everyone makes errors sometimes and I can accept that. But one of my pet peeves raises its head when a person doesn't fess up, and blames someone or something else to cover their a@@
Enough grumbling
Hobbies - I need to find (or do more of) three hobbies I love, lol!
For Money - I have an eBay store where I sell new and used clothes.
For Exercise - Yoga
For Creativity - I love baking and cooking, but want to disengage from it since it contributes to my over eating. Other than that, finding ways to "train" my BF in being more equal with meal prep and household tasks, etc, is often a creative act.

Confused (over the car situation)
Heartbroken (over not getting together with DGD and DS)

Insightful.
I remember having a primary care physician that was more obese than I was, and she was stressing to me about losing weight, blah, blah, and I was thinking, how can she dictate to me, when she needs to as well! Also I have talked to new doctors, with that "I'm a new patient, let's get to know each other" appointment. We have talked about many things, but then the only topic she puts down is obesity! Then Tricare doesn't pay for appointments if its only obesity related! So then I have to call the doctors office and state its a well person visit, update prescription etc, please change it! Its annoying. I pray one day the word obesity will be put mentally in the same category as having blue eyes, or freckles. I am obese, doesn't mean I am sick, nor that I am anything less than. Its 1% of what makes me, me.💖

Happy National Cheese Curd Day!
"Cheese Curds are unique, funky, snackable little pieces of yellow or white Wisconsin cheddar cheese. ... Fresh ones squeak when you bite into them. Cheesemakers create different flavors to appease the growing number of people enjoying cheese curds."
Heather - I agree with you that a big life change like losing a job can lead us to a better place, but getting from here to there is certainly no fun at all sometimes!
Kelly - Congratulations on the new little one in your family! Poor Joaquin... he was probably thinking, "This isn't what I had in mind when they said I was getting a brother!"
Things got busy around here again so I've been logging but not reading the forums. I didn't even try to catch up since I was 40 pages behind. I've missed you all!
Once again I'm struggling to find the motivation to exercise. It's hard because deep down I just don't want to do it. So, like a lot of things I don't want to do, I have to make myself do it anyway but I do it kicking and whining inside.
It does help a bit that the heat has finally broken. Well, kind of... we went from highs in the high 90s straight to about three days of highs in the low 50s and now we're back to the 90s again. At least it's the low 90s now instead of pushing triple digits so I feel like there's hope of nicer weather ahead. It's been an exhausting summer!

Viv in UK – I spent a bit more on my kitchen redo, and a couple of other projects, than I intended, but I found it worth every cent and am so glad I did it.
Kim in UK – nothing wrong with a .5 lb weight loss-that’s a good start and very normal for many of us.
Heather UK-great news on next cruise prices.
Barbara in Seattle -yes, I did it myself. Never had that happen before, most of the time it does help relax things. I googled it and discovered that it does indeed happen.
Lisa in AR -don’t think your concern about potential deployment is political-it is just a reality for those who serve. When my son was in the Air Force, he deployed to Balaad (Iraq). Turns out he volunteered to go there and serve as a guard for the base. Scary time.
Regarding people being treated differently and doctor’s writing everything off to one obvious issue, I think the same thing can happen with women in general, especially as we near menopause. A woman I work with spent over a year trying to convince doctor’s something was wrong with her and they were just writing her off as being a bit hysterical. She did not give up the fight until she found the answer-turns out she has MS. She was in tune with her body and started noticing symptoms at an early stage. She manages it well and still works, and certainly didn’t do anything to get it. We are our own best advocates-or we can stand for others and help they get the medical services they deserve.
Saw my doctor today about leg/knee. He thinks I have a lot of inflammation and tight muscles going on involving lower back and leg. Wants to try physical therapy first, get a good evaluation from them and then see how it goes. It sounds reasonable to me. While I am waiting I want to hold off doing my own stretches, etc., to ensure I don’t do something that isn’t appropriate. When I had a deep tissue massage a few months ago she said my calves and thighs were extremely tight. Cutting back on walking goals til I get evaluated. Oh, and surprisingly, I have some arthritis involved. Going to check out some homeopathic remedies to see if something to try besides the anti-inflammatory drugs. They are ok for an acute episode but I don’t like taking them all of the time. For now, slow, steady mindful walking, ice, and massage with some eucalyptus oil. Enough whining from me. There are far worse things going on than my current infirmaries.
Question about taxes --I've read several of you are working on taxes at different times (and I think none of the ones doing that are in the US). I guess I am just so used to us doing ours January - April 15 I never thought about different ways of doing them. Do the other countries just have a different time frame? Does everyone in a given place have the same deadline or does it vary? Just got me curious.
Take care all,

You take a daily vitamin right? Just thing of your daily exercise as your physical vitamin. For me that takes the "choice" out of it. Its just something we do. Pretty soon people will recognize you and then that's accountability. I tell my friends at the gym, I am the token obese person. Someone has to be, and I am honored to be one.💖

Hello all!
Took a 6 hour (3 hours to and 3+ hours back) drive and went "elk watching"today ... something I have never done before. The Fall leaves were gorgeous in our area and through the Allegheny National Forest. And, yes! I did see in three separate places bull elk and their harems! None of them, of course, where anywhere near the designated viewing areas or the visitors center ... we saw them while getting lost in Elk County after we lost cell coverage for our gps!

I am not a lover of exercise, I am a lover of feeling happier, less stressed and more energetic- and exercise (for me) contributes to my feeling better eventually and sometimes almost immediately. My exercise is like Becca says—it is my vitamin —without doing some kind of exercise I eventually start to feel sadder, and less energetic.

Did one hour HIIT on the elliptical. Did ½ hr on the elliptical where you are standing and the other half on a recumbent elliptical. I’d never used one before. The plan for tomorrow is to do Bob Harper’s Body Revolution DVD
Luci NC – hope you feel better soon
Still avoiding eating on the side of my mouth where the bridge belongs. I have an appt next Tuesday for them to do the prep work for the bridge. Wonder what that includes? It’s been so long since this bridge was put in that I’ve forgotten. Well…I’ll find out soon enough
KJ – what a blessing you were to Lauren, Joaquin and everyone.
Beautiful day today. We got about 80% of the stakes out for the “fence”. Now for the part where we have to be careful where we put the stakes so that we don’t puncture a pipe. Fortunately, Vince has LOTS and LOTS of pictures of where the pipes are.
Barbara – as the ceramics are done, I certainly will share them. Right now I’m working on a snail, a friend gave me this what looks like pilgrim hat that I may be able to use on the turtle I just did (right now I have a straw hat on him). Another friend went to this shop in SC and got a large mug for me. I was looking for a large one for the condo. Honestly, I probably could find one in Target for less money, but it wouldn’t have that “personal” touch.
Welcome everyone new!

Wow, an awesome community. I am such an intermittent logger, blogger. Job search definitely saps motivation. After applying for two jobs everyday when I wake up, I often have no energy left. I have GOT to start taking hikes again to reward myself, esp now that weather has cooled to autumn. Just need to avoid hunters!
Still bouncing between same 3 lb range for several weeks. Want to lose 2 more lbs this month so I can start next 3 lb push.
Took out all my fall & winter skirts & most still fit. Still would love to lose 4 inches off waist.... then I’d be back in some of my best clothes!
In general, loving life despite strugges with discouragement.
Word for Oct—“slow down.”. (okay, two words).
Strength & courage to you amazing women.

Ginny I got PT for knee issues related to tight leg muscles. It helped me. It also helped to be careful with the shoes I wear and that they have arch support. When my knee was at it's worst I did the exercises in a pool and that helped too.3

Regarding dementia (including Alzheimer’s disease), I just recently came across the information that there is a link between high homocysteine levels and dementia. You can read more about it in this article:
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5836397/
This is particularly interesting (and worrying) to me because in conjunction with my genetic disorder MTHFR, I have a naturally high homocysteine level. Since that was discovered (during 2 weeks in hospital with DVT in 2009), I have been on the Vit Bs and Folic Acid and my homocysteine level has come down a bit.
I knew that MTHFR + a high homocysteine level put me at risk for cardiovascular issues, but didn't know it also put me at risk for dementia!
But the reason I came across that information is because I was looking up information on the relationship between brain injury and dementia. The jury is out on that and I image that is because it is very hard to tell.
Is the reason why my husband has shown me around the garden 3 days in a row, each time as though it was my first time seeing it, because of his brain injury ... or is he starting to develop dementia? I'm not even sure the neurologists could tell.
But meanwhile we do what we can ...
https://www.dementia.org.au/about-dementia/dementia-research/reduction-and-prevention
https://www.dementia.org.au/information/risk-factors
https://yourbrainmatters.org.au/5-simple-steps
And the WHO's (World Health Organisation) guidelines on preventing dementia ...
https://www1.racgp.org.au/newsgp/clinical/who-releases-new-guidelines-on-preventing-dementia
These include:- Physical activity
- Stop smoking
- Eat a health diet (they suggest a Mediterranean-type diet)
- Stop drinking alcohol
They also suggest that keeping the brain active, maintaining a "normal" weight, and managing cholesterol and blood pressure, but these seem to be slightly less important than those first four things.

In Canada the deadline is April 30.
In Australia the deadline is October 31, but they seem to be pretty relaxed about that here. That seems to be a preferred guideline.
So ... I've had my past 6 years taxes done in time for this October 31. I'm all caught up for now.

Tuesdays are my weekly check in days. I lost only 1 pound this week, but that was enough to push my over all total to 25.4 lbs lost all together for my 18 weeks. I can definitely see some changes in how my clothes are fitting for sure. And wouldn't you know that just before my daughter's wedding back in April when we needed extra space, I got rid of all my old skinnier clothes. Probably not my best decision. I walked my six miles today, kind of a struggle motivation wise, but got it done. So, for the day today, I had over 300 calories left thanks to a lighter than usual lunch and lots of good walking calories. I need to be doing that more often. Overall, pretty happy with my day. Only two weeks until the new horse, Nemo, arrives. I really want to reach my goal and use riding him as a reward and a new exercise for phase two, but still have 9 pounds to go and I don't know if I can wait that long. Daughter coming home the next two weekends in a row, so that is always good. Doing some tutoring for a second and a third grade which was fun, but I really need to find an official job. That is my biggest stress right now, but gotta admit, I don't think I would be doing as well on my lifestyle changes if I were working. So, always a bright side I guess.3

Matchka thanks for combining all our answers to the hobbies challenge! Interesting variety but a lot of commonality too!
RV Rita enjoying the morning 60’s then afternoon 90’s here at Bottomless Lakes!
It is an interesting variety but with commonality ... and a lot of creativity out there.
Future Hobbies: At some point, when I've got some time, I'd like to continue learning languages and piano.
I've got some French and a tiny bit of a few other languages but would really like to become as close to fluent in French as I can ... and I'd like to learn the basics in Mandarin.
Way, way back when I got to Grade 3 piano (Royal Conservatory of Music), but stopped there. I keep thinking I'd like to get a piano and continue.

I love languages too. There’s a part of me that wants to learn Russian. Mandarin is fun if you can hear the tones. I think being musical helped...maybe!!

Thanks for the support on my pain...just got a bit out of hand. Back to my "sane" way of coping. My glasses arrived in the mail today (which I had hoped would solve my vision crisis...no such luck, so back to square one)
Michele Hope all goes well with the bridge...seems like a long time to wait for the appointment! I imagine most of it will be taking impressions. Don't know if you have to have new crown work done depending on how it broke.
Rachel Welcome! and best of luck on the new eating system. Hope it works well for you. Be sure to pay attention to portion size and types of food so you are able to maintain when you stop the program. I've known others who have done really well with that kind of program to get the initial weight off, then they just have to learn to eat the same way when they finish losing.
Alzheimer's Scary how many things can result in the disease, not to mention no particular reason as mentioned earlier. I was diagnosed early onset, which was changed to head injury because it improved (and of course Alzheimer's doesn't improve). It has been a big fear since the injury because my grandmother and Daddy both died from it and there is definitely a genetic link. DH and I have discussed since I am concerned he could end up having to make decisions for me later. Of course, you never know. I could end up caring for him...we will see what God has planned...
Hoping to get some rest tonight! Love the pictures, Lisa!

The possibility of one of us having to care for the other is precisely why I'm actively getting our affairs in order.
And for us it's not just a possibility any more.1 -
Interesting reading about the dosctors and mis diagnosis. I was taking medication for migraine but it was getting worse. I also ended up very depressed and struggled to function. A second Dr recognised the peri menopause symptons (i dont have periods due to having womb lining removed) and put me on tibolone. I am back to normal except im left with all the gained weight from the depression.
This leads to my question, is it harder in the 50s to loose weight or is it a myth? I am doing everything i did on WW but the weight loss is so slow or non existent and i give up. I went 30 cal over yesterday so I got my exercise bike out and peddled like mad while watching tele

VTRebeccaNJ - Welcome to a great group of ladies! We're glad you're here, come back often and share how you're doing at your own comfort level.
I'm not sure who seemed a little shaken to know that Alzheimer's may just be a flip of the coin, but it does seem that way for both Alzheimer's and dementia. None of the experts seem to genuinely know if any of the things that are being touted as "preventing" either one of them are actually working or not.
But for me, that's kind of a motivator. To me, life in general is a throw of the dice, with Machka's husband's traumatic brain injury being a prime example. His life and hers changed in moments, without warning. But... on both sides of that flip of the coin, I'd rather if my husband has to deal with my cheese slipping off my cracker, he won't also be dealing with physical, preventable health issues as well. And if I have to deal with his cheese similarly departing his cracker, I'll need to be healthy, as well.
Part of what I'm fighting is that, by the time my mother was my current age, she'd had two heart attacks and an angioplasty to open up a vein to her heart. She was only 51 when she had her first heart attack. Quite a bit of hers was stress, but part was genetic (her father had a quadruple bypass at 60 years old), and part was probably her diet. She died of a stroke at 72. I hope to avoid all of that, if humanly possible.
Down off my soapbox. Time to get it together and go to the gym...
Love y'all,
Lisa in AR3
