" The only problem is that you can't have grapefruit with statin medicines which both Jake and I take to reduce cholesterol."
thats what I was thinking too, and I know I saw that warning on a medicine he takes.. I've got to check that right now before I forget it again, thank you for reminding me. It would need to be discussed with the dr. He takes Lipitor and Welchol.
thank you
p.s. I love to freeze grapes then have a cupful.0 -
:flowerforyou: Barbie, grapes are usually my go to snack. They contain so much water that I can have a lot of them.
I didn't know about the statin medications. My cholesterol was up a few years ago but it is down now, so no meds. I would have a lot of problems taking them...I love grapefruit. Just had a half this morning.
I did good yesterday. Stayed under calories...maybe a bit too low. But, I will probably make up for it today. I did 1 hour of Zumba last night and am planning on going to the YMCA tonight to use the weight machines.0 -
Happy Tuesday!! We are blessed with another beautiful day!!
Who would have thought grapefruit juice shouldn't be taken with some meds? I am glad I don't take any over the counter meds.
Barbie, any word on our boy Jake? Please give him our love. The newly engaged couple is so happy and so excited I feel guilty I was in doubt. I should no better to worry about things that might not happen.
Phoebe, I knew you were a great person, anyone who loves animals the way you do is perfect in my book. :blushing:
Marie, you still amaze me with your abilities to do so much on the Internet and with your crafts, you are one talented lady. Glad you got a sprinkling of rain, it must have cooled it down for a short time yes?
Jeri, when do start your radiation treatments? Are you feeling better and stronger now?
Becky, you are doing such a great job with your exercise, keep up the good work.
I am going to head to the casino for a few hours so wish me luck. Have a great day!!0 -
Skinny Dipping
An elderly man in Florida had owned a large farm for several years. He had a
large pond in the back.
It was properly shaped for swimming, so he fixed it up nice with picnic
tables, horseshoe courts, and some orange, and lime trees.
One evening the old farmer decided to go down to the pond, as he hadn't been
there for a while, and look it over.
He grabbed a five-gallon bucket to bring back some fruit. As he neared the
pond, he heard voices shouting and laughing with glee.
As he came closer, he saw it was a bunch of young women skinny-dipping in his
pond.
He made the women aware of his presence and they all went to
the deep end.
One of the women shouted to him, 'we're not coming out until you leave!'
The old man frowned, 'I didn't come down here to watch you ladies swim naked
or make you get out of the pond naked....'
Holding the bucket up he said, 'I'm here to feed the alligator.'
Some old men can still think fast.

Have a great day!!0 -
:flowerforyou: Sandy...Love it Keep them coming.0

BARBIE. I wish Jake well.
SANDY. I love the joke. LOL. Keep 'em coming.
I was feeling good but now I have come down with an infection in my incision. Rats. I started antibiotics and at first they seemed to be making a difference but I'm not sure now. I go back to see the doctor on Thursday. I really want this to be all put behind me so I am thinking positive thoughts. Radiation should start in October so I need to heal up so they can do it.
It cooled down here today. Thank goodness but I'm not complaining about the heat. It is almost September so cooler weather will soon be here.
Hope everyone is having a great day.0 -
so sorry Jeri, feel better soon, take care
Sandy, that was a good joke that I've never heard before, going to tell dh that one!!0 -
OH, FUDGE, 20 minutes of my post disappeared into cyberspace, and now I'm late!
BARBIE, best of everything for Jake!
SANDY,   and great news and much happiness to you all!
PHOEBE, good luck on the new way of eating
Grapefruit and its juice should be discussed with the doctor for anyone on statins and certain blood pressure meds, as well.
JERI...we'll all think positive for you! So sorry about the infection :flowerforyou:
WELCOME --Marge? That's where my post disappeared, trying to make the welcome fancy! If the name's wrong, I mean well!
MARIE, rename you wonder woman with all your accomplishments.
BECKY...do a Zumba class for me, too!
Really wrecked my food yesterday, first at an opening of the new Aldi store here, where they handed us hot dogs on a bun, and who could refuse that? Not I . Then dined at our favorite Greek restaurant (looks like a dump, food is divine!) and I forgot to sign in yesterday so I'm back to day 1 in here! Anyway, the sodium added back my 3 pounds, and was worth every morsel. So better go have lunch before it's dinnet time again! Hi to all the people who disappeared into my cyberspace post!

       Jake is on his way home from the hospital. The angiogram went well and the doctor found nothing wrong. He said that any pain Jake feels is not a pain of damage but just his heart telling him to slow down ( during the move, everyone was telling him to slow down and he didn't always listen, but maybe he'll listen to his heart). The doctor released him and good friend, Larry, drove over to pick him up. They will stop for dinner on the way home and will be here in a few hours depending on how long it takes to eat dinner and how long they have to wait for the ferry.
 :brokenheart: Jeri, I'm so sorry to hear about the infection.:brokenheart: I, too, am thinking positive thoughts for you
 Sandy, once again the joke was great
Jake has to take it easy for three days so I'll be doing the dog walking which means I'll get all the steps and calories. :laugh:0 -
Phoebe I am off of my daytime Insulin just on Lantus at night and the doctor cut it down. I am to keep a record and let her know how it is working. i am so glad.after 4 years taking 4 shot a day is great. My diet is working maybe not as much on weight loss. but it will happen.
Barbiecat I am so glad Jake is coming back home soon I was afraid he would over do it.. Take care Jake.. you are not a yung as you used to be.
Jeri So sorry about your infection your meds should tttake care of it. When does your Chemo start

I just read through a lot of the post here on Senior Golden Sneaker and what a fun and interesting group. I'm hoping that at a young 71 I am old enough to be a part of your group and make a periodic entry once in a while.
It looks like the group is from all over so the diversity of post has a wide variety of topics, which is great. I'll be watching my topics for more posting, til then Goodby AUGUST and hello SEPTEMBER.0 -
Phoebe, Buzz, Barbie, Marie and anyone I missed -- thanks for the good wishes.
Marie -- I won't know until the end of September when my chemo starts. Fingers crossed that my breast infection won't delay it.
Barbie - so glad Jake's angiogram went well. Whew.
Sandy - love your jokes. I can relate to the one about eye glasses lost on your head. That's where I found mine when they were lost this morning.
ieuanfw -- join us, we have lots of fun.
Here's a picture from our camping trip. Best wishes to all..

Hi folks. Sorry that I continue to be here so sporadically. I will try to improve. The US Tennis Open is on so I have been wasting too much of my time in front of the TV. We did take a run in to the city today as Dave needed some materials for the biathlon trailer that he is fixing up. (darn I hate the corrections this iPad makes so that I end up with ridiculous word, note biathlon trailer that was supposed to read boat trailer) We did go out for lunch and I had a burger and salad. The burger was made with half lean beef and half bison, so delicious. Not the best choice but not the worst either!
About the grapefruit -- sadly I have been without it for a long time and I do love it. It interacts badly with Tegretol which I take for seizures. It should be avoided with many drugs, some BP drugs, hormones and too many others to mention. Check with your pharmacist or your dr. if you have concerns. You can likely find out about your drug of concern on the Internet but I would not hesitate talking to the professionals.
The other thing I have been avoiding is black licorice because of the interaction it has with Furosimide (a diuretic). You have to be careful with licorice, real licorice, I believe twizzlers are ok but I am still careful with them. I understand it really lowers potassium. I like real licorice but don't take the chance. Like grapefruit there are many other drugs that interact badly with licorice. I will get off my soapbox now!
Marie -- great job on reducing the insulin. So happy for you.
Jeri -- hope you get rid of the infection quickly.
Barbie -- glad that the angiogram went well for Jake. Never hurts to have a little reminder to slow down!
Sandy -- enjoyed your joke. Did you win at the casino?
Buzz-- I know the frustration of losing your post!! How is your elbow?
Welcome to the new folks. I know I wanted to say more but it will have to wait.
Take care everyone. Gayla0 -
hey Gayla i am up couldn't fall asleep so i got up so i wouldn't bother Jerry Hey not a bad ideal maybe I should bother him. Might be fun.
Thanks for the information. I do not like grapefuit. or licorice And what about your seizure? seems like I remembeer a little about you mention it once before but don't remember anything about it. Did you see where I ran across the old woman world's mag. that has our Wendy plan in it. 2003 i thought I had thrown it away.
About your hamburger i was thinking about one just a few minutes ago. My plan for it would be to order one with out chips or anything thro the top of bun off either order a salad or a couple side orders.Get them to cut the coutons out of the salad. The place alice and I ate Sunday has a nice asortment of side orders. Sounds good to me. Alice is eating like me now. I hope she stick with it for she foundout when she had her surgery she was a diabectic.so if she eat right she will avoid all the problems I have Kidneys, pain in foot and legs0 -
:flowerforyou: Gayla, I was going to mention ground bison to you but I see that you are already familar with it. That is the only ground meat I will eat now. It tastes great and is not greesy.
:flowerforyou: Marie, Alice is fortunate to have you around to help her eat healthy. Isn't it so much easier when we are not the only ones trying to clean up our diets?
Welcome ieuanfw, sure 71 year olds are included here. I think this is the best thread for older people. I turned 60 last January.
:flowerforyou: OK Sandy, how did the gambling go? Oh boy, here is another joke post. Love them.0 -
Good morning Becky. I almost beat you up. how is your group doing on your challenge? Are you all following the same plan or what. What plan are you on
I really feel like a miracle has happen to me. on my diabectic. I have had it for 20years and never been able to control it before . Thats a long time and here I have change my life in 2 1/2 weeks. Who would have beieve it of me. Now I am a beiever that any plan will work if you stick with it 100 %But for some unknown reason I couldn't stay on one lone enought to find out.. i lost my first week but now it is slowing down. My doctor told me once I would never be off of insulin. I am complete satisfy to this lifestyle. and ease of prparing my food which is always ready. in the fridge for me. my Blood sugar this morning was 100 truly a miracle. has happen. Where it most likly to have been around 200 before I started this portion control Plan

Marie: You are a fantastic lady. Yes you can do it! Anyone can get their insulin level down by
losing weight. I am still on that journey myself. Type 2 for me. I am working hard
everyday to get healthier.
Sandy: You are hilarious with all the jokes. They make my day.
Barbie: I am so glad it wasn't anything serious with Jake. Best wishes on keeping him
strong and healthy. Slowing down is hard to do.
Jeri: I hope all goes well with your incision getting better. :flowerforyou:
Gayla: Great Big Sea had their final concert when I was there. They are taking 1 1/2 years off
and will be back for their 20 year anniversary tour.
Getting ready this week for the final cruise on my boat with hubby. This will be the Labor Day weekend.
We will be pulling the boat out of the water end of September. A few more sails this month just around
our area weather permitting. You never know what September will bring.
My daughter's in laws will be joining us for a weekend of sailing end of September. I told Dave we better
think of Plan B of wine tours or something if the weather is lousy. We are in wine country where our boat
is stored.
Have a good day ladies. :bigsmile:0 -
well, I'm trying to type, but a cat/youngun won't let me. we'll see if I can type fast..
Marie, you are amazing, and such an inspiration!! As far as the weight coming off, well, with such great numbers as yours, why push yourself too hard? Eating good for you foods and seeing great results in your labs, well, that is really SOMETHING!!!
Yes, welcome to the last new poster, it was a user name with a bunch of letters, but I don't think it spelled anything, so I have already forgotten it.. a name in your signature would be great.
ok, got some cleaning out and clearing up to do. we aren't sure yet when we will be leaving, and we also aren't sure yet if it is time to switch to a new truck. all up in the air. So, I will reorganize a few things in hopes of taking less to the new truck. Taking only what we need for a trip helps to eliminate the clutter we have gathered.
Becky, how was your challenge at work yesterday? how do you plan to do it, weigh in weekly?
Sandy, I hope you won big bucks!! - and now you should go out and spend them on yourself!! thank you for your kind words.
Barbie, your tip about the grapefruit was well timed and right on the money.. called the doctor's nurse yesterday, she called back and the dr. instructed us that dh should only have 6oz. of grapefruit juice in the morning, each day. Since I am not on all of the meds that he takes, I can still have the 3 servings per day. Thank you again for that post!!
Gayla, I had no idea licorice was a no no for some folks, I see what you mean about real licorice, and not twizzlers.. I have read about it as a healthy food too, but never about the bad interactions that are possible. Thanks to you too!!
well, here comes the cat/spoiled rotten , so I'm going!!0 -
:flowerforyou: Pheobe, our kitty does that also. Sometimes my daughter will have her type a status for her at facebook. Of course, she then puts an explaination.
:flowerforyou: Shirley, a wine tour sounds like fun. We have a winery about 40 miles from us. We visit it every year on our anniversary.
:flowerforyou: Marie, I am so happy to hear about your diabetes being under control. Eating healthy can do that. Congratulations.
The challenge is being put on by my employer. I now have a total of four on my team. Three men and ME !!! We weighed in this week and will two more times. They are not wanting make us weigh too often. People may get frustrated. Anyway, since I am the captain, I have been sending these guys diet information. Yesterday I sent an email telling them about MFP. Well, today one of them stopped me and told me to look at his phone. He has the app !!!! He had gone online looking for a way to log his calories a long time ago. MFP is what he got. He has not even visited us on the web. I think that he will now.0 -
I am a terrible mom !!!! My daughter hurt her finger a long time ago and it is still bothering her so we took her for xrays. The doctor just called me. Her finger is broken.:sad:0

Bob forgot his anniversary Wednesday. His wife was mad. She told him "Tomorrow morning, I expect to find a gift in the driveway that goes from 0 to 200 in 6 seconds AND IT BETTER BE THERE!!!" The next morning when his wife woke up, she looked out the window to find a box… gift-wrapped in the middle of the driveway. She opened it and found a brand new bathroom scale. . . Bob has been missing since Friday!0

:flowerforyou: Irene, that is so funny.
My daughter's finger is chipped in the knuckle. The constant bending of it was not allowing it to heal. Now she has a splint on it but, maybe for only two weeks.0 -

I hope it doesn't sound like bragging, but truly this is the greatest bunch of supportive friends you can find here! Return often :drinker: By the way, I'm the elder here at 84 :noway:
MARIE, your granny sounds like a wonderful gal! I think you take after her, too! And that news about cutting down on your insulin is fantastic! You are doing something really right...
SANDY, love your new picture, and your "jokes" just get better and better!
JERI, are you a professional photographer? If not, why not??
GAYLA...interesting info about both grapefruit AND licorice! Interactions can get dicey! ANd thank you for asking; my elbow seems completely healed and I've gone back to the fitness center again! I think those ThermoCare patches were terrific!
BECKY, I love bison burgers, but never see them here. They had a wonderful place on the beach in Kailua on Oahu where we ate them almost every lunch time! I believe they were raised on a ranch on the Big Island. Did you do that extra Zumba for me? By the way, you are anything BUT a terrible Mom! It could happen to anyone!
SHIRLEY, I'll be sorry to miss your "cruise" posts when the b oat goes into dock for the winter. I could visualize your fun!
PHOEBE, the organizational skills you have sound phenominal! Will the new truck have to be bought by you, or is it company-owned? Hope it's a gas saver! Good luck.
IRENE, nice to see you and love the story! Stay well...
SANDY, missed your Hubby's Birthday, but we wish him a big happy one! Will you post the new month here?
We really do rely on SANDY to keep our calendar posting up to date So[img][/img] in advance, dear friend!

FYI.... leuan explained on his post his name, so leuan it is. However is Frank acceptable?
HI everyone,
Seems some of you are having a problem with my user name:"ieuanfw".
My name is Frank Jones, Ieuan is Welsh for Jones. You may shorten it to Ieuan, but I'd like to keep my name, as each of you want to keep your own.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________
Welcome back Mary Ellen you have been missed. :bigsmile:0 -
Irene -- loved then joke.
Buzz - no professional, just a lady who loves taking pictures of nature. Thank you though. Wintertime I don't take a lot of photos.
Gayla and Shirley. Thanks for caring.
Slow day today. Hope everyone had a great day.
Here's another photo from our trip.
