Less Alcohol - JANUARY 2020- One Day at a Time
Replies

Hello all! My goal is to be *mainly* AF for the next 60 days and then only an occasional drink. I say *mainly* because of a couple planned celebrations that I expect having 1-2 drinks at.
My whys:
- Too many calories! I turn 40 in November and I hope to have lost another dress size or two this year.
- alcohol makes me lazy! I still workout and have been successful the past year sticking to healthy eating, but once a glass is in hand at home...chores are left undone, too much TV is watched, and not enough real fun with the kids is had. We adventure together, but I want to make more memories and be more active together.
- my DH has a family history of alcoholism, and while I don't see he has an issue, it's good to watch habits and be good models for our kids. Thanksgiving with family who is in the grips of it was a stressful reminder of this.
Sending motivating vibes to everyone as you work toward your goals!11 -
Welcome @achristian03. I like your choice of words already. GOAL, MAINLY, OCCASIONAL. Nice to have you joining us.4

I would like to get in on this!! I'd really like to change my 1-4 drinks/night into ONLY a Friday and Saturday thing.... I've gotten into the habit of having a couple drinks a night to relax..... and it's really unnessecary and leads to extra snacking and sometimes extra drinking. It's just not healthy all around. I could use some accountability with this! My goal is to be out of the habit of "work/school night drinking" by the end of February Wish me luck!
Jan 5- 2 drinks
Jan 6- 1 drink8 -
Goal :: limit to 4 days in January
Jan 01 - drank quite a bit on 1 Jan - wine and beer.
Jan 02 - AF
Jan 03 - AF :: Fridays are challenging. Proud to skip. Compensated with overeating. Need to find better alternatives. Fridays are most tempting days for me to drink.
Jan 04 - AF :: Saturdays are easier than Fridays
Jan 05 - Drank :: (2-3 units) and quickly followed up with food. Trying to limit drinking to 1 day a week with strong max limits. Enagaged my husband to do the same.

Almost one full week in AF. Last night was the hardest so far - it had been a long day, and although I exercised after work I really wanted that glass of wine, or something. I poured some kombucha in a pretty glass, and thought about my January goals, and it helped. Also good to know I'm not alone in the month!13

AF days, 5/6
I love reading about everyone's successes, and also nice to know many of us are struggling with the same issues. This is a great place to come when temptations are high, and you need to calm them down.9 -
Tonight will be my 3rd AF day of the month (also 3rd in a row due to being a late starter ).
I find it relatively easy not to drink during the week, weekends are more of a struggle. I'm getting better, but this weekend I've had a trip to my OH's parents sprung on me and they have a nasty habit of trying to force feed me wine. Hopefully the fact I have a 3 hour ride the next morning will help me turn it down!9 -
Plan is to keep logging, no matter how good or bad or REALLY UGLY the stats look. When numbers not looking favorable, plan is to note it and be honest with myself. Lose the shame and the blame. Analyze what actions, habits, routines contributed to that....learn and push forward. I deserve success.

Jan 5- 7 (UGH-UGH-UGH). It was a Saturday - I bought a bottle of my favorite rose while doing early morning grocery shopping, because it was on sale. I convinced myself I would only have 2 glasses that day and save the rest for Sunday. Drank two glasses with lunch. Then around 5pm completely forgot my plan and finished the rest while doing house chores (here goes my mindless drinking again). Then after dinner, had 2 beers (I don't even like them) but at that point I already had wine-brain running the show, making bad decisions for me.

I'm here checking in. It's been 6 AF days in a row for me so far, and I hope to add a 7th today.
Tomorrow is likely going to be my planned weekly day of having some alcohol. I'm spending the night at my in law's house and my MIL already expressed how excited she is to have dinner and wine with me. I will probably have some wine. I'm not feeling the need to be 100% AF right now, but just really want to have it be the exception rather than the rule.
On another side note, I noticed my husband, who hasn't had a day without a beer that I can remember in the 14 years we have been together, enjoying sparkling water last night instead of beer for a SECOND night in a row. Amazing!15 -
Hi all! Nice to see so many new people, and returning posters as well!
Went to dinner unexpectedly last night, and had an unexpected wine. I am sleeping so poorly lately, and the nights I drink are the worst- even if I’ve only had one! So, here I sit with my Pelligrino with a splash of cranberry in a wine glass. Looks like Rose!
As much as I’m getting back on track from vacation and holiday overindulgence, I am happy that a year ago I started my journey to drink less. I remember those first 3 days were SO HARD! But once I got over that hump, it’s so easy to not have a nightly drink. Even tonight, I’m not craving my usual wine! It’s no big deal for me to be AF when I want!
So, even though I occasionally slip up and have more than I should, or more often, overall I’m doing so much better. I’m not engaging in “drunk eating” so my weight has come down. I was able to reduce from two minimum to mostly one glass. For those of you just starting out, this can be done!!!11 -
Today is Day 7 AF for me and my body knows it! I'm a weekend drinker and 6 days is the most I will go without drinking at a time. So I'm being treated to a nice headache tonight. Oh well, time for some sleepy time tea.9

January accountability ~ 7
No Alcohol: 7 days
Alcohol: 0 days (0 drinks)
Goal: AF days 3 per week / 12 per month
DH has also racked up 7 AF days this month!10 -
As usual, I am going to try for 16-20 AF days for the month.
I just made it to 16 for December.
Wednesday January 01 - 3 drinks
Thursday January 02 - 3 drinks
Friday January 03 - AF
Saturday January 04 - AF - Had to delay and delay and delay today, really wanted to have drinks...but I didn't.
Sunday January 05 - 3 drinks
Monday January 06 - AF
Tuesday January 07 - 3 drinks. Although I have skipped some Tuesdays in the past, it is my designated drink day. I felt off the rails today and know that I need to make some changes with jobs, because the Tuesdays are increasingly just too much for me. Tough to find another job at 59, but the stress is ridiculous. That first sip of alcohol was nicely numbing. I know intellectually that it is not the best way to decompress, but it certainly is surefire and quick.
Running tally: 3AF days out of 7 days so far.10 -

Kudos to you for your active lifestyle!! A 3 hour bike ride sounds daunting!2 -
Old habit: 1-4 drinks/day.
Goal: Ease into only drinking on weekends! Consistantly be AF Sun-Thursday by April.
Jan 5- 2 drinks
Jan 6- 1 drink
Jan 7- AF 😁8 -
I have also managed 3 days AF (in a row) and was also a late starter.
I don't very often drink at home, only if I am out with my partner or with friends so during the week it is not usually so hard to go without drinking.
However I am out this evening at a social event with a group I volunteer at - it is in a pub and I already know I will arrive with the best intentions of ordering a soft drink and instead the words "Large Rose" or "pint of Lager" will come out of my mouth - and I can never have seem to have 'just the one' it will be 3 or 4 (or 8).
The weekend is also going to be tough its I am away with my partner at a lovely hotel for his work christmas party with a fancy dinner (already over my calories) and a free bar (who can resist that??)
I feel my will power fading already

@NovemberCharlieAlpha congrats on your 3 AF days and yes there will be hurdles during this process. It already sounds as if your "drinking brain" is preparing you for "rewards" for being AF.
This happens to all of us. We feel as if we owe It to ourselves for being good. Like a kid being handed candy for being quiet during nap time. Those "we deserve it" moments are tricking to get around. Possibility planning to toss in some virgin drinks that still appear to represent an alcoholic beverage may satisfy that drinking brain. Good luck

Deep breath @globalhiker. I see you have written down some numbers that are better than that 7 for Sunday. So you are on the right track. You just got off the rail for a moment........give it another try. 😊4 -

Congrats on getting your weight down. I know that has been a motivator for you.3 -
January 7th and 7 AF for me.
Although I went thru the house late yesterday afternoon and last night like an anteater sucking in all the sweet stuff I could. Good thing is I reconized the trigger for my food assault and was able to stop it before more calorie damage was done. UGH. Winters &#$%12 -
Well, I had two glasses of wine last night. For some reason, I was very anxious, and that is when I am able to talk myself into "just a glass." I am disappointed in myself, but today is a new day, and at least I am keeping up with my water intake. Aiming for more AF days than not this January. Luckily it is still the beginning of the month.7
