I haven't had the surgery but others here have done it. But I have gone gluten-free and done the colonoscopy before. These days, going gluten-free is surprisingly easy - you'll have to check for it in things like salad dressing but just plan out your meals and get gluten-free replacements for what you want to keep in your rotation. Avoid eating out for hidden sources. Trader Joe's and other stores have lists of products you can look for: https://www.traderjoes.com/dietary-lists/gluten-free. Two weeks will fly by and it is actually really cool to see if you have a negative reaction to gluten. I do feel like it makes me foggy.
As for the colonoscopy, well, the prep really sucks but its only 16 hours or so, and part of that you are sleeping. Make sure you don't get dehydrated. The procedure and recovery are a breeze and practically fun on laughing gas, so you will do just fine.
I know it's scary to find out what is going on but it is your first step to taking care of yourself and reclaiming your health. We are all here to support you.
Lol I ate just a banana for breakfast since there was nothing else that was quick in my house that didn't have gluten.
I unfortunately don't have anything extra in my budget to go get more groceries this week but I will be able to go next week.
The surgery is the gastric bypass. I realized I didn't mention that before. It is separate from the medical problems I'm having.
Thank you ladies for the support. I was kinda am wondering what I'm doing on here. But I want to want to be different. To change.
I'm sick of feeling like a failure. And I have a feeling that this might be my chance. Even if it doesn't feel like it yet.8 -
My favorite new foods I recently found that are supporting my goals to eat enough protein but not too many carbs:
Premier Protein - Vanilla Protein Shake blended with a cup of frozen blueberries - 31 g protein, 19 net carbs 0 fat. So delicious!
Oikos triple zero yogurt - 15 g. protein, 7 net carbs, 0 fat between 90 and 110 calories depending on the flavor. The vanilla mixed with 1 T of PB fit peanut butter powder is to die for. Also the banana creme.
Carb Balance Mission Tortillas - I love wraps. I don't love that most flour tortillas have about 200 calories. Theses have between 60 and 70 depending on the flavor. 3 net carbs, 6 g protein. They are soft and taste just like a regular flour tortilla.
Those foods have definitely been helping me meet my macro goals this past month.7 -
@terytha - they sell it at Costco, if you go there. But I also can find it in bulk at my usual grocery store.
@Caseyloupuckett - (((Hugs))) If I can offer some wisdom from my own learned experience: Please, please try to get past feeling like a failure. To quit smoking, it took me 4 tries. I learned something with each try. I'm still learning how to lose weight, and have a ton to learn how to maintain it. But when I'm not completely successful, I'm not failing, I'm learning. I said this earlier in the thread. I hope you can hear it: I initially had a lot of shame for losing and regaining weight. It stopped me from getting back on track. I'm glad I learned that I had to kick shame out of the way or I was going to keep tripping over it in my journey.5 -

It's one of those feelings difficult to overcome. But I want to. Because I know that I'm going to drop a whole lot of weight with the surgery. But I know that's not going to change my feelings and that has to come from within.
So I think this is going to be a very long journey that I'm going to have a take one step at a time.6 -
Hi, all!
I see a lot of great intentions and motivation in this thread today.
Me, I dropped off because I went to visit family in SC over the long weekend. I did still log what I ate, but it wasn't as precise as I like to be, so I maybe maintained. I have kept up with my running schedule, which is great.
I'm working a new shift at work, so it's hard to make new habits based around that, but I'm working on it. The whole, "get up at 4am with the baby, go to work at 12, get off work at 8pm" thing is for the birds. I've been noshing more than I should, and I haven't logged all my snacks over the last day or two, but every day is a new one.
My diary is full of what I have eaten and plan to eat, and that's what I can do today. Tomorrow, another run, another opportunity to figure it out (and go grocery shopping, lol).
I hope everyone is having a great day!5 -
Today has been the worst day ever. It started with me stabbing myself with an exacto knife and just went downhill from there. But I didn't comfort-eat the donuts in the lunch room. I'm not gonna eat anything different from my usual. So there. :<
I am probably gonna wrap myself up in Blanket Town when I get home and play video games though.
I'm exhausted. I need a vacation.

When I walk during lunch, have been listening to the Halfsize me podcasts and finding alot of value in them. There's one on stopping emotional eating which brings up changing our lens about daily lives and how we react to things and people. To stop judging ourself, or to change our self talk. Not saying we all have to be Stepford positive pollys but advocate for reality needs.
It hit home for me.
@terytha On the topic of ice cream - make it lactose free, sugar free/calorie free (& not erythitol as that just makes you too gassy) please!! Could gladly have it every meal.3 -
I managed to get my protein points up to 77g today but still failing miserably at fibre on 11g. Will endeavour to do better tomorrow.4
-
Pick me! Pick me!
I'm starting again today! Today is the day.
I'm premenstrual and want to eat everything not tied down! Just because I have cravings does not mean I need to act on them.
Yesterday I went to 2 stores with a relative and she kept pointing out junk food things to me.
I'm staying strong telling myself I can do it. Using affirmations no matter how weak I feel on the inside.9 -
I went to the grocery store today, and it went a lot better. Had my boyfriend along, and so I was less inclined to browse, and we stopped and had a proper lunch out halfway through, which made it a lot better. Funny how much more patient you are when you're not ravenous, hm? (laugh) I did nap, but that was mostly due to back pain. I was able to make us a good dinner (chicken in ale sauce) and I'm drinking iced tea and chatting with friends and later I'll have my hot cocoa and call it a night. I'm not going to worry for the now about what the scale says. I'm just going to eat properly and exercise every morning.7

I’m sick 😭 I have a fever and just feel bad. This is definitely going to affect my eating and exercise. I have no appetite and no strength. I hope it doesn’t last too long.10

@Tarzan37 I wonder if maybe the app needs to be updated. I know when my apps start acting funky its usually because they need to be updated. Either way, do what you need to do to be successful
@L2HS You can use this calculator https://tdeecalculator.net/ to help you calculate your caloric expenditure in a day (how much calories you burn just by being alive plus exercise). It will calculate your maintenance calories, or how many calories you need to maintain your weight where it currently is. By seeing your maintenance caloric levels you can then subtract some calories (like 500 is a good start) to get a deficit and go from there. As you lose weight you can to adjust your levels, because the lighter we are the less we calories we need to consume. Hope that is helpful.
Thank you for the link! I’m getting different numbers from different sources so I’m trying to logic my way through it.

bluffgirl67 wrote: »@L2HS If you put the info into mfp to get your calorie guide then you need to be eating at least half of your exercise calories back (half to allow for tracker etc overestimation). For example when you eat 1200 and worked off 400 per fit bit then you are only netting anywhere from 800-1000 calories depending on exercise accuracy. I say eat more. Slow is the way to go.
Thank you for taking time to reply. You’re truly inspirational to me! I’ve upped my calorie intake the last two days but it’s messing with my head. I keep reminding myself that I’m still eating way less than I was. I’m also way more active than I’ve been in months.

@L2HS, great progress! I wish I was able to provide some advice about eating too little, but echoing everyone else, I was also told to make sure I am eating at minimum what my BMR (basic metabolic weight) since that is what your body needs to exist.
Thanks for responding! I’m researching BMR after reading your comment.3 -
I just hope that as I lose weight my lower back will stop giving me so much grief when I stand for any length of time. I'm sure the lordosis doesn't help, but neither does being 280-some, cause I don't carry it all in my legs and arms. (laugh) I get tired of having to sit for fifteen minutes halfway through things like doing the dishes because my back hurts.7

@speyerj I love a tortilla but I dont like using too many calories on them. I found these at Walmart. They are 100% wheat with flaxseed. Only 50 calories per serving and they are good on fiber and low in sugars. Only thing is they need to be refrigerated after opening. I think you would like if you haven't tried them!!

So I ended up getting food poisoning by my lunch and spent the day throwing up 😫
Spending the day in my thoughts is usually not a safe place. But today it kinda was. For the first time in my life ever, I dreamed of what it would be like to be skinny.
I've never dated to have such a bold dream. Not because I didn't want it. But it seemed like a ridiculously terrible way to get my hopes up to be crushed again and again.
But with this surgery that will likely be before the end of this year. It feels like it's time to start dreaming ridiculous dreams.
And to start fighting for it.
I'd really like to start getting to know you all. I've been reading all your post. And a lot of you seem like fighters. Maybe I can learn a thing or two. 🙂6 -
I know the 5 week prediction when you complete your diary is just an estimate, however tonight when I finished my diary it gave me a number I haven't seen probably in 15 years, maybe a little more. It showed 199.4lbs!!! This was so inspiring just to see it is on the horizon. After coming a good distance on my journey and having so much more to go. This was a wonderful thing to see!!! Just had to share. Have a wonderful evening!!14

I’m 17 days in to my 1200kcal a day diet and I’m starting to buckle. My willpower is waining and I’m craving bad things. My first week I lost 11lb, second week didn’t loose at all, this week I’ve weighed part way through and I’ve still not lost any more weight. I seem to have plateaued early and it’s having a negative impact on me continuing this diet.
I sort of think “why bother eating food I don’t enjoy, when I’m not seeing any results?”. My mojo is going and I’m afraid I’ll be stuck this size forever more or bigger 🙁6 -

Hi theleadmare, I have back problems too. I slipped three discs in my lower back 9 years ago which was extremely painful. MRI showed I also have lumber lordosis and ‘degenerative disc desiccation’. So I have to be very careful how I bend and lift things. So I sympathise with your discomfort. My spinal specialist did drum into me that increased weight will be detrimental to my injury ... yet I’ve put on 3 stone since then.
I feel old before my time with my back problems and knee cartilage damage. I’m mentally a 20 year old stuck in a 90 year old body. It’s so frustrating.

@Savannah80 1200 calories is mentally and physically difficult on the body especially if you are also working out. Are you sure your body is getting enough. Increasing your intake by 200 to 300 calories may improve both the physical and mental part of your journey.5

Why are you not enjoying the food that you are eating? The reason I ask is that if this is going to be a lifestyle instead of a "diet" then what is the plan when you hit your goal weight? Keep eating things you don't like or go back to the way you are eating before? Can you find other choices from things you do like and eat those instead so even if your scale isn't moving (don't forget to take those pictures/measurements!!) then you don't feel deprived?
For me, finding a new recipe but making it a "healthy" one has been the key. I'm excited for what I'm eating because I know I'm going to enjoy it and it still fits in my calories for the day. I am also not depriving myself from things that I want as I'm eating chocolate chips every night for a snack and still losing. I quit drinking for the month but will also have to figure out how to fit those calories into my lifestyle as i'm not giving up alcohol in the long-term.
Don't give up but don't make this something miserable. Find things to eat that you actually want to eat but just make healthier choices.
You've got this!!! You CAN do this!8 -
I was hypo (low blood sugars) about 4am. My husband was brilliant and just gave me sugar tablets, wrapped me up in blankets and didn’t let me eat the entire kitchen. 6 hours later I feel rough, sugars stabilised but I’m so goddamn cold with a pup that wants his first 5000 steps walk. This is going to be a tough day to battle through.7
-
@kali31337 I don’t really enjoy what I’m eating because I’m a really fussy eater. I can list only a few vegetables I eat and only 2 fruits and I don’t enjoy eating any of them, I just tolerate them. So eating ‘healthy’ means eating food I’m not keen on. It also means there’s little variety as I eat the same veg every day more of less as there’s so few I eat. For example I eaten Rocket for 6 of the last 7 days, red pepper on 5 of the last 7 days, mushrooms on 4 of the last 7 days.
Foods I enjoy are all bad, which it goes I ended up this weight to start with.
I’m missing my yummy carbs, white bread, pasta, rice ... yes there are whole grain/wholemeal options but they don’t taste as good. I’m also massively missing my red meats. Fed up having chicken, turkey & fish every day. It’s bland and boring.
Meanwhile my husband is eating pizzas in front of me which isn’t helping matters.6 -
@savannah80 sounds rough, and your husband isn't helping! I'm also a picky eater and over many dieting experiences have come to realise that works for other people doesn't work for me, you'll have to figure out what gets your head in the right place, but i'll share what works for me in case it helps. I've decided i am going to take my time on this journey and aim to lose slowly and keep it off. I set my cals at the highest option (to lose 0.25kg a week) but then i don't eat back my exercise calories. I try to do a lot of exercise. I eat the foods i like, but smaller portions (i don't have a huge appetite, i just like high cal foods). I try to avoid snacking so that i can eat the stuff i like at mealtimes. Think of your calories like your pay packet, if you really want to splurge, you can, but you have to adjust elsewhere. You could look into intermittent fasting also, 16:8 frees up cals and works well for people who don't like diet food. Hope there's something there that helps, or at least inspires you to find out how you could find what will work for you.3
-
Forgot to say my cals are 1700. If you put yours up you would lose slower but you could have red meat and white carbs in moderation.3
-
Hi @Savannah80 ! If what I say is a thing you've heard before, feel free to disregard.
I found that it took a while for my tastebuds to change. Now, I love roasted brussels sprouts (so roasted parts are dark brown), roasted butternut squash, and I tolerate cauliflower rice.
I say tolerate cauliflower rice, because for me I don't ... love it, but it's worth it for me to eat it because lower calorie. I'm sure you feel the same way about some vegetables and fruits.
What I do to make sure I don't burn out is I have enough calories to treat myself once (or twice!) a day, as long as I eat enough veg to keep me full the rest of the time. So some days that means real honest-to-everything rice, sometimes (a lot of the time) that means moderate portions of cookies or ice cream. Feel free to add me as a friend and stalk my food diary, if you'd like. I have done 1200 cal a day, but it was ultimately too rough, and I was exercising just to eat back calories.
I find when I set my cals a little higher (right now I'm at 1600), I can do it pretty easily if I pay attention, and I have room for those treats that keep me going eating cauliflower rice even if I don't think it's the most delicious thing ever. And I usually don't even eat back exercise cals.
Just something to think about! Have you calculated your TDEE and BMR?
2 -
Yeah, I eat very well but it's because I've got 1490 to play with, and I usually wind up going just under that by 10-30 calories. Eat what you like, just recognize you can't eat so much of the calorie-dense foods. Today for me is a sausage sandwich with cheese for breakfast, a pork fritter on a bun with barbecue sauce for lunch, and three tacos for dinner, and after dinner I'll have hot chocolate with whipped cream in the evening. But that's sustainable on my calories, and I'm losing weight on it.
Though Boyfriend thinks, and I agree, that the current apparent plateau is muscle gain. I have NO problem with that!3
