Thanks Timberlan, you are always so encouraging. I am always analysing stuff, all sorts of stuff but a lot of around behaviour and motivation, often my own. I think there are some very powerful psychological forces at work in our heads, mine anyway, and I also think it affects or is affected by our biochemistry. For some people, and I include myself here, creating my own mental cheer squad doesn't work. I sort of rebel against it like a recalcitant child. Maybe that is a idea I should pursue further having written that down and realised that it may have significance.
Pardon my rambling everyone but this is how my mind works but usually there is no-one to read it and comment. I appreciate any feedback.
I was also wondering after re-reading all these comments about the words we use, battle, struggle, fight, challenges, emotional eating, failure etc. We all sound so mentally exhausted by this. Do we need to find other words? I am rambling again and need to do something to quieten my brain.

Hello y'all. I'm so grateful to have found this thread and would love to join in the discussions.
I'm 73 and found MFP in Jan. 2018, started tracking at 190lbs (not my highest weight.) That year I lost 40 pounds. Even though I wanted to take off another 20 I decided to try maintenance. Stopped tracking, took lots of fun trips and on/off ate healthy during 2019. Got back on the scale January this year and was up 15, so my plan needed those healthy choices, daily tracking and 1,200 calories to move the scale in the right direction.
I must focus on filling, nutritionally strong foods and add more exercise effort to achieve a "I'm not so hungry" success. So far January 2020 and I'm down 8 lbs. and feel it's time to reach out to others for support and motivation.

This is a great thread!! It's nice to hear that I'm not alone in the problems I've faced. We're all struggling together. Keep up the rambling, getthebabeba. I enjoy hearing all of your theories. It gives us all food for thought. I'd like this to be the last time I make this journey to a healthy weight so the more thought and hopefully eventually conclusions I am able to come to the better. I want to be able to maintain the weight loss permanently this time. So obviously there need to be changes made and new mind sets established for permanent change. With everyone adding thoughts, ideas, and things that work or don't work for them we can all learn from each other. I'm so glad you've kept this thread going even when you weren't getting a lot of encouragement, getthebabeba!
Keep posting everyone. I have had two successful days in a row. I'm working toward a successful week so I can feel back in control. Your stories and advice have helped me regain some of my strength of mind. Wishing you all a healthy successful day.2 -

Hi, I've been on MFP for awhile now, but today is the first showing of a new change on the scale 3lbs less. I'm a female, aged 59 with a July birthday this year. I've lost weight in the past, using WW, but didn't manage maintenance very well. All the foods I liked but avoided to lose the 40 lbs was my downfall. I started eating them with no regard to how many calories I've eaten. So, I say to all, eat some of the foods you like but in moderation. So hard in our Western culture to deny ourselves when we have plenty around us.
I've been using a combination of Keto and Intermittent Fasting (IF) these past two weeks. Started because I got tired of cooking (have a young adult at home that eats out all the time, so why cook). Then I got a sciatic attack, which limited me from doing much of anything, even getting something to eat, cause walking and standing was just so painful to do. Went to the doctor and she told me that while I lost some weight, I still needed to work on my BP readings. So that is my initial goal - to get it down so that my next visit February 28 will show considerable change. My big goal is to lose 40 by my birthday.

Good morning everyone and particularly the new faces. Loving the photo Charles! And Jim, no wonder you look so chill strumming away there, great progress! It gives me great joy to see so many adding their story to this thread. Strength in numbers. Pardon the pun but it takes guts to reveal our journeys to others.
Oh, how many have struggled through long periods of their lives attempting to get weight under control. It really makes me wonder about what is really going on with human bodies beyond the impacts of technology (ie plentiful food, labour saving, leisure time etc etc).
Following on from my thoughts about weight management language, I found this article last night and thought I would share in case anyone else was interested.
It is written by a group that is involved with weight reduction but nevertheless, I thought it had some relevant points even though I was thinking along different lines.

I think how we use language is a very powerful tool that we can use to leave our weight behind. I will continue to research this and refresh my reading on mindfulness. There has to be more than counting calories forever.
I know we must be very aware of the impact of what we eat but I don't want to spend my life looking at food like this:

Good article, thank you for sharing it!! My sister and I are both so guilty of negative self talk and it is a hard habit to break, not impossible but hard. A work in progress for sure!! It truly hurts my heart to watch my sister constantly talk about herself in such a negative manner because she places all the blame directly on herself and uses all that negative verbiage within the article. I can see the affect it has on a person. It can wear you down until you feel you're responsible for everything, worthy of nothing, and no more than a plop of dog poo.

As for myself, I'm doing okay. I'm certainly looking forward to a break from winter weather when I feel like being outdoors. It's cold, dark, sometimes icy. I love seeing the bright crisp skies at night but it'd be really nice for it to hit 30-40's consistently. SOOO looking forward to gardening this year!!!
My eating has stayed within limits, for the most part and I'm still exercising every day. I have a couple projects I need to start and being a procrastinator, there are always better things to do. Lol

I'm having a good day. I was able to get back to the exercise equipment today after a 5 day break due to a cold. So far today I've been able to control my portions and eat healthy food. So I'm hoping for another good day. I also read the article. Thanks for sharing. It is so true that words are very powerful. The more negative the more power they have. That's why we all need to be as positive as we can.
Welcome Pamdar67. This site is a good place to get some support in your journey to a healthier you. I hope you saved this thread so you can find us again and let us know how you're doing.
I agree there should be a better way to this journey to good health than looking at food as good or bad and how many calories it has. I try to concentrate on portion size but after a lifetime of worrying about weight it's hard not to look at foods as good or bad and calculate the calories. The weight comes off so slowly now that I think I do that more often than ever before.

Reenie, I know what you mean about weather constantly in the 30-40s. Here it is mostly 40's lately but Celcuis!!! Already 35C at 8.30 this morning and heading to the mid 40's with dust blowing later today. Plenty of light though!! So where did January go?
Welcome Pam, I am 67 too, live alone but have a son, DIL and two beyond energetic young grandsons very close, so that fills some of my days easily. I hope this group helps you to not feel so alone and gives you encouragement. Time to nurse yourself now.
I am off for a week to stay with my mum who is 87 and has more health issues than I can count. It is a source of great anxiety to me and I know how stress and weight work with me from past experience. I am not one of those people who lose weight under stress, quite the opposite. Seeing her also provides some incentive to take better care of myself (even though most of her issues are not self made). In twenty years I do not want that to be my fate.
I need to be quick today, I have a long drive ahead and still a million last minute things to do. Have a positive day everyone. Be kind to your precious selves. Those bodies have been working hard for as lot years and need some praise. They can't help the genes they have to work with.

Hello 60's group. 65 here and counting... I've used MFP a couple of times in the past with successful weight loss. However I am a complete failure at maintenance! So I'm back again and glad to find a group that seems so compatible to my age and issues. I'm retired and a couple of years ago I had a biking accident which fractured my left tibial plateau. Any excercise after that was minimal and I packed the pounds back on. I am finally able to ride a Catrike but weather here in the midwest is unfavorable for riding in the winter, so I'm doing a (very) little walking with my dog. Rejoined MFP January 4 and have lost 7 pounds so far with low-calorie and IF combo. I am also a pescatarian (only eat fish, no red meat or poultry) so challenges there in keeping calories low with all the grains/legumes I normally consume. So...I think this thread will help tremendously in keeping my goals and comparing notes with the rest of you.4

60 (AU) Hardest thing is “mind over matter”, TV snacks (no no)and eating the right proportions cals,fats,protein:-
Recovering from 2012 car accident, kidney stones, 50%thyroid removal then eventual surgery to spine, and various drugs you take for pain.
This App has got me to at least start and be a bit normal- and works well with Altitude training(highly recommended) and swimming.
The foundation is right food- right amounts...
Anyone can get fit and lose weight. But everyone is individual:- this app allows you to tailor, monitor your requirements..
We can all do it..and get fit.

Hi @Fishwishing I also had a tibial plateau fracture on my left leg. Totally immobilized & no weight bearing for 12 weeks. That was no fun, but it has been 10 years ago now & I can do most anything, although my exercise is mostly walking. I turned 70 in Dec. Have been on MFP for a long time, mostly maintaining, but really only want to lose about 10 pounds, so guess maintaining is OK, lol.1

Hello all, I'm 75 and have been yo-yo-ing between 239 and 250 for a year now. Right now I am at 246 and have lost almost 4 lbs this January. I checked my weight loss report chart for the past year and realized that certain events have sent me off the rails at definite times during the year, such as family gatherings, weddings, Christmas holidays and other stressful times. I want to be more active but realize I have to do that gradually, since when I jump into exercising too fast or do too much I end up injured and back into physical therapy! Ideally I want to lose about 90 lbs but losing 50 by this summer would be great. For now, though I am aiming for losing 5 lbs a month, plus walking more as the weather gets better.5

I am a 67 year old man and have been losing weight reasonably successfully. Depending on what you count as beginning I am down somewhere between 98 and 138 lbs. My tracer here says 112 lbs. My peak weight was 360 lbs about 10 years ago, since then I have had a lot of downs and some ups.
Last May I was at 320 and started the diet I am on now and have gotten down to 222 lbs, I am pretty happy but I still have weight to lose. I am 5' 7" and probably need to be somewhere near 160 lbs.
I have been overweight pretty much all my life, and I am a binge eater. Controlling the binges has been a real key to my success. I don't have any secrets there, I just don't binge one day at a time. I do still have some strong urges, and I have to be diligent not to slip every day.
My diet has been simple, I just eat somewhere between 1,000 and 1,200 calories a day, and I have stuck to it 100%, no slips or cheat days so far. I write my food down and count the calories everyday. Over time I have improved the quality of what I eat as I have learned more about nutrition. I have also learned a lot about what can be filling without many calories. And I have learned some tricks for dealing with hunger and cravings. I am not an expert on any of this, I just have my own personal experience, and my limited reading to go by.
I have been doing some exercising, its getting easier as I have lost weight. I do some bicycling and some walking, but not as consistently as I probably should. I have not found a comfortable workout plan.
I am concerned about how things will go from here, I know that as I approach my goal weight loss will get harder. And I also know that maintenance will be harder than losing the weight. So I need all the support I can get. I will try posting here for a while, perhaps this is the right place for me.
I did post here a few weeks back, but did not do a good job of following up. This time I will try harder.7 -

Alligatorbob, I always heard that anything below 1200 is too low and could slow your metabolism. Not sure that is true, just what I' ve heard.3

Annliz23, congrats on the loss. 👍 I know what it's like to do all the right things and the scale stays stuck in the same place. It's so discouraging. I've had another good day on plan. Every day I get by makes me feel more in control again. This group is so inspiring. Everyone is working so hard despite all our medical issues. The support has really helped me to get back on track. I spoke to my doctor about it and he said that so long as I am feeling good, and not tired or anything its fine. He also said the health benefits of the weight I am losing would outweigh any risks of under eating.
That said I know we are all different, and not everyone will have the same results I do. I also recommend talking to your doctor about any very low calorie diet, below 1,500 a day seems a rational cut off.4 -

I have been down the rabbit hole of thoughts about all of this, again, and thought this article was interesting.
I have been thinking about how to not get derailed by things that happen ( a dinner out, visitors staying a few days etc). Once 'disturbed', I find it hard to get back on track.

Hi. I'm new to this group. 60 & need to lose about 50 more lbs. so I can get a hip replacment. Not good @ tracking my foods but I've lost about 20 over the past couple months. Trying to find exercise I can do that doesn't involve a lot of hip movement. lol You guys seem to be all on track from some of the posts I've read. Hoping I can get some motivation from y'all.
