Hi all--I think I have commented here a few times, but never introduced myself. I turned 70 in Dec. Been on MFP a LONG time, still trying to lose 10-15#, but been more or less maintaining, which I guess is something. I mainly walk for exercise, but am planning to start a little more muscle building & bone maintaining, lol.6

Hi all! This is a really great group to follow. I get a lot of encouragement here and it's nice to read about people in one's own age group as our problems/troubles and victories/triumphs are all so similar. I also belong to another group called the "Lose 1 Pound a Week and Keep it Off 2020" group, here on MFP. So far, I've done just that. They require you to weigh in once a week to stay active and to be kind and helpful in your remarks.
They have a number of spreadsheets set up with challenges that you can do or not do, as you choose. We have two groups set up that "compete" against each other (although it's a VERY friendly competition - we're just as likely to root for people on the other team as we are those on our own team). Next week we have a great BINGO challenge coming up; it looks like it's going to be great fun!

Hello 60-ish-ers. I'm new, just posted once or twice but really enjoying the discussions. Seems like we all have medical/health related issues that impact our weight loss goals. But it's great having a group of similar age and similar issues that I can really relate to. Prior to my biking accident a few years back, I found it very easy to be active. Loved hiking, walking, biking -- anything outside activity always cheered me up and made me feel better. I have a Catrike now to accommodate my knee injury but living in the Midwest during the winter is challenging. Not easy to get outside and do anything. I take my dog on short walks when it isn't too snowy/icy but have been trying to find things to do inside as well. So far I have started using some light weights (mostly during tv commercials - ha!) and a fitness band so at least I feel like I'm doing something. Thanks for all your posts and encouragement and new ideas. RCVP, can you expand more about how the challenges work?3

@Fishwishing, sure, I'd love to. Okay, the only mandatory challenge is the weekly weigh in - just like it sounds. You weigh yourself at the end of the week and enter it into a spreadsheet. Points are given for weight loss, BUT no points are deducted if you have a gain.
Then, we have additional ongoing challenges - Accountability (Setting goals), Calories (Set a calorie goal/limit), Check-In (Just post something daily), Hit Target (Were you within a certain % of your calorie goal), Workout (workout goal), Miles (miles walked, run, biked, etc.), and True Weight (my favorite - you weigh daily and it adjusts your trending weight for water/waste fluctuations. Has a cool graph that goes with it).
In addition, every week we have 1 or 2 fun additional challenges thought up by the administrators/leaders. Next week is BINGO. Every day there are 4 to 5 small things to do which are set up on a BINGO board. If you do them all, you get a BINGO! for the day and score points.
At the end of the week, the leaders add up all the points and post the results for each category and for the overall winners. It's fun and keeps me motivated to put my weight loss and fitness goals front and center each day.

Hello from bright and sunny Victoria. Terrible day yesterday. Once again I had a glass of wine and all thoughts of controlling chocolate intake were gone. Oh well, today is a new day. Albeit one where I am 0.9 pounds heavier. Back on track today. Funny, I didn’t really enjoy the wine and sweets all that much- why did I keep consuming? This is a very interesting journey.3

Hi RCPV & bacpath, please don't shoot the messenger, because I am sure anybody could find other advice somewhere on the net but, I was curious myself. My sister is a heavy drinker and stayed with us for 4 months once, although she drank no alcohol while she was here she did consume vast amounts of bake goods. I thought it might have been because she missed the sugar in the booze.
Alcoholic beverages primarily consist of water, alcohol (ethanol), and different amounts of sugar. The calories come from the alcohol and sugar and are considered "empty calories" because of the lack of the other essential nutrients. ... You do not need to be an alcoholic for alcohol to interfere with your health and life. I found this on www.medicinenet.com
I don't think a drink now and then is necessarily bad though... just my opinion.

I found MFP when I was looking for a place to figure out the calories in some foods. I just found this thread and have read several pages. It looks very friendly and supportive. I plan to check in every day and see how everyone is doing. I live a somewhat solitary life so finding friends online is very helpful to me.

Welcome to our new members, it's great hearing from everyone. Yesterday was a busy day so I made a plan and stuck to it so no guilt today here.
First thing in the morning I took a good walk (I needed to make sure there were extra exercise calories in my daily bank.) Needed to spend a little time on the internet and wanted to use some YouTube Functional Training videos and was happy to see that many of the things I currently do were there with explanations on how they apply to everyday living. Thank you again @cayenneandcoopersmom for that tip.
Knowing that I would be testing willpower in the evening at our monthly happy hour I planned by tracking what I would eat for the day and leaving some open calories. Funny, first thing I entered on my tracker for the day was my cocktail. Next I prepared an appetizer to take. Sliced cucumbers, piped on garden veggie cream cheese and a bit of tomato on top. Prepared a salad with protein to eat a filling meal before the get together so I wouldn't be tempted by the bad choices on the food table. With prepared food in the fridge I was off to a painting class in our craft room. Had fun painting and then enjoyed the salad before heading down to happy hour. Gave myself a "dry January" so this was the first drink of the year. I filled my water bottle with lots of ice, 1 shot of bourbon and a diet ginger ale. I savored the barrel aged taste, sipping slowly throughout the night. Because I wasn't hungry after eating my salad most of the food on the table didn't seem like a temptation. With my plate filled with the cucumber, some veggies and a little cheese I enjoyed the company of friends for a few hours. Snack for the night as tracked, filled in the unplanned food and never felt hungry for the day with my allowed calories. For me planning is key to taming temptation. Thanks for listening. Hello Folks! I am a 62 year old who has recently retired and hit the road with my DH to full time RV. I want to take a personal journey as we take our RV journey. My goal is to lose 60 lbs and it just seems overwhelming. I am happy to find a group that is for the 60+ members! I think our journey might be a bit different that the younger folks and will appreciate any advice and support. Here's to working on being the best and healthiest we can be!8

Good morning to all members, just read all new posts and got some morning inspiration. Yesterday was a good MFP day for me, stayed within the 1200 cal. I am like in j29t in that planning really helps me as well, if I know what I am eating for the day, it keeps me on track. I was able to do 2 youtube yoga workouts and even though it was very cold, I got out side for a two mile trail walk with my dog. Today involves more working out and eating right. I can feel my body getting much more toned which is encouraging. Wishing everyone a great day!4

Valentine's Day was a fun one for me! A couple of friends and I went to the annual Stage Door Canteen on the USS Lexington. The big band was wonderful, and there were lots of folks in uniform or other clothing from the WWII years. There are not many of the old vets left anymore, sadly, so the main attendees were boomers with lots of younger people there as well. I did my usual and went as Rosie the Riveter. Anyway, I ate too much and had more than one (ahem) alcoholic beverage, so I'm going to be making up for my indescretions over the next week - lol.2

Hi - I've used MFP on and off for several years, but now I really want to get very serious. I am 71 years old and I need a lot of help, especially when it comes to exercising. Very isolated where I live, so have no friends to walk with or do anything with, so I'm on my own. My granddaughter just got engaged and is getting married in the fall of 2021, so I have plenty of time to be presentable for the wedding. Will need a lot of encouragement? Thank you

Muscle tissue is more dense (takes up less space) per pound than fat tissue, for sure. Muscle is worth having for many, many reasons - particularly as we age - but it's very slow to actually add muscle tissue** (new cells and fibers), and slower for those of us older, more female, and at reduced calories.
For a woman under ideal conditions, gaining a quarter pound of muscle tissue per week would be a great result (half a pound per week for men). Ideal conditions include relative youth, more testosterone (among other possible hormonal factors), a good progressive strength training program performed faithfully, excellent nutrition (especially protein), favorable genetics, relative newness to strength training, and a calorie surplus. On the flip side, a quarter to half pound of fat loss per week would be about the slowest observable rate.
If you've been working out, especially if strength training, for a long time, adding muscle is a possibility, and a great thing. Hang in there, keep doing the good stuff, and eventually that scale will move!
** Strength increase can be quite rapid, especially at first, but it's coming from neuromuscular adaptation, basically better recruiting and using the muscle tissue we already have. We can also see more muscle definition relatively quickly, mostly because of the way water retention in the tissues works for muscle repair during the process.

I like to fill in my food diary the day before so I know in advance what I'm planning to eat and don't go off-track. I have a problem getting in enough protein as I've been vegetarian for the past couple of years. I do occasionally eat fish/seafood (so maybe I'm really Pescaterian?) but mostly its plant based protein. Trying to maintain 1200 calories a day while eating whole grains, pulses, legums, is challenging but it is so helpful to use MFP to enter food and try to make it all balance.1

@Fishwishing, I have the same problem. At home we eat vegan because my husband has microscopic colitis and if we eat vegan he has no flare-ups. The only time I get meat is when we go out to a restaurant to eat. He usually has a vegan dish and I have whatever the menu has to offer.
It is difficult to eat enough protein. I usually fall short, so I've been thinking about trying a pea protein supplement. I can't use whey because it bothers my stomach. Have you ever tried a plant based protein powder?1 -

Do you eat dairy?
I'm ovo-lacto veg for 45 years now, and sympathize with issues around veggie eating. I'm in maintenance now, getting 100g+ protein daily (I'm 5'5", for context), but was willing to let that drop down to mid-70s grams while losing, if I really had to.
Some folks find plant-based protein powder or bars really helpful, but I don't personally find them tasty or satisfying. I'm fine with using soy products or eating gluten (I know some aren't). Some things that help me hit protein goals are tofu (in many forms, including noodles and smoked), tempeh, occasionally seitan.
Even without those things, there are now black bean, pea, and lentil pastas that are helpful, in case you haven't tried them but would consider them OK to eat (some people might not consider them whole foods, but in that they're generally just beans and other vegetable ingredients, maybe some salt, I don't have a problem with them). The black bean ones tend to have a texture unlike wheat pasta, so I prefer those in soups or in Asian-style preparations. The chickpea/pea/lentil ones are more similar to wheat pasta in texture, but I think a bit flatter-tasting, so I prefer them with a hearty sauce. Particularly good (and high in veg protein) is one another user here recommended, where one blenderizes dried mushrooms to powder, then combines with lentils, tomato sauce, and herbs/seasonings of choice.
Because I'm ovo-lacto veg, I do use quite a bit of dairy (such as nonfat Greek yogurt, cottage cheese), but I'm pretty confident that I could hit protein goals entirely plant-based without protein powder or bars. (I don't eat many eggs, but will sometimes.)

I walk every day for about two hours and listen to podcasts and audio books that I have downloaded to my phone, thus I always have good company. Indoors, I have a recumbent exercise bike and ride it while watching favourite programs on TV.

Thanks for the caution. I walk with two dogs and my cell phone in a safe private community and have done so daily for 15 years.4 -
I used to carry my phone but since there have been lots if attacks by me I dont just carry a torch to shine in eyes but my dogs probably put some off although last year someone threw a ice drink at us4

Good morning 60 and uppers I am having my go-to breakfast this morning a sausage sandwich. It consists of one piece of 12 grain bread, 1/2 sausage patty(chopped up into little pieces) 1 tsp of jalapeno mustard and a tiny bit of butter on my toast so it doesn't soak up all the mustard. I know it sounds weird but, it make me feel like I'm cheating and helps me get my fiber
