Today's post. Still need to catch up with the past 5 pages! Thank you Barbie for getting us going for March!
I have made it a point to not accept any male friends on MFP. I have no desire to make any friends on here other than women. Not only do I avoid men online, I especially want female friends with my weight loss journey since men have such different results and experiences. Also, if (God forbid) something ever happens to DH, I don’t want another man in my life. I’ve had the love of my life and don’t want to go there again!

Allie Any job that requires antidepressants and antianxiety meds is not a good one! Sure hope you find something better soon!!! I am so very glad you put in your notice. I hope you are already feeling better with your decision!

Sue Our basement is only half finished and we have had issues with mice coming in…I hate mice!! DH has been planning to seal the basement (we also get water with all the flooding in the area). Hope he can make it a priority soon!
Michele I like how you sneak in the healthy stuff for DH. I will have to try to do the same for mine! He will eat most things, but it will work better if I feed him things he likes and then tell him what I put in it! Sorry you aren’t looking forward to coming back to NC. It’s been nice here!
Ginny Sorry work is rough at the moment! Sounds like you have a good handle on it. Retirement is wonderful in my opinion!
Lisa Your comments on your son make me so happy that all of our children are hardworking and self-sufficient. I would be happy to help them any time (and have at times), but only because they have shown their ability to be responsible and thrifty. Our youngest is trying desperately to sell his vehicle because they have two car payments and with baby, he would like to avoid his wife having to work full time which I completely support! I am hopeful I can talk DH into letting him have one of our vehicles for a very discounted price to avoid having to make payments.
NYKaren We lived in Rochester when I was 2, and I will never forget the time our house had drifts that went to the roof. Daddy had to dig a tunnel out of the house. It was so wild having the view out the windows be completely white from the snow! We had so much fun playing in the tunnels once we were able to get out!

Hi, I'm new and just found the thread. Am 50 in August so hope that's OK. Just learning how to use the app and community. My aim for March is for all the looging to become second nature as it's been very strange this week. Have been with SW for about 5 years and had lost 5 stone but after 2 operations, I have gained half back. Seems much harder to shift now so am learning about my food and it's benefits to my body. Anyone who wants to add me as a friend is welcome. I haven't worked out how to do that yet but I will lol. Good luck everyone for March!3

Hi all. I'm also new and just found the thread. I just turn 50 in January but still feel like in my 30's, okay maybe in my 40's Does that feel wrong? The only bad thing is that physically, it's just harder to lose the weight and eat less even though I'm pretty active. With that, I have few March goals listed:
1. Track, track, track - Track everything and stick to goal. What's the point if I keep going over my calories?
2. Finish my half marathon in decent PR time. I haven't ran a half in 3 years and feeling achy in new spots I've never had to deal with before. Must Xtrain during week too.
3. Strength training - to be more consistent. These one-day-a-week training sessions is not going to help me so I'm going to try to lift at least 3x a week.5 -
Hello, I'm new here too. My Mom passed away in November just one day shy of her 101st birthday. Since then I have found 30 pounds. My goals are to:
1. continue to log in and record
2. learn and memorize the saying "Don't give up what you want MOST for what you want NOW"
3. read this thread each day
4. continue to close the rings on my Apple watch5 -
Told my friend in Wuhan that the government speeches sounded familiar must be me. He answered back with a video showing lol 😂 China y USA have the same script writers . He says it’s not me it’s the same incompetence y slow reactions with the exact same speeches. Shared a food recipe with him he’s tired of the same old meals in quarantine world of Wuhan. Feel free to leave him some easy recipes too he shares with his Mom also in quarantine.

I am at my son"s house. We picked up Bea and it took ages to get back as she found some prairie grass and had to brush every tree and bush on the way home as well as DH and me.!!!!!!!
I have given in to what I want at the moment and have decided to go to Fatto a Mano on the way home to ours. Oooops! In my not very good defence we haven't been out to eat for ages. I'm determined to leave behind the guilt and really, really enjoy it.

We ended up rescheduling the duct cleaning. The serviceman called to say he was on his way. Dave told him I had been sick and still had a slight fever and left it up to him if he wanted to come. He opted to reschedule.
Re online friends of the opposite sex. I don’t accept friend requests unless it’s someone I know or a name I recognize from this thread. My husband plays a lot of Words With Friends with strangers. Women will try to get him to chat or exchange photos or similar. He doesn’t fall for any of it. He just loves to play the game and accumulate points for badges and stuff. It’s sad that there are lonely men out there who get conned. They can tell by his picture he is an old man! I’m sure they think he is easy prey.
I started the 40 day Sugar Fast for Lent. Getting sick has derailed me slightly. I know saltine crackers aren’t technically sugar but they were literally all I wanted to eat one day. I did drink a real Ginger Ale with my crackers because Dave couldn’t find sugar-free Ginger Ale at the Dollar General. I count it a win that I did not have ice cream because I really wanted some! I am also fasting from the scale. That is going to be the hardest part, because you know you always lose weight when you’re sick. It’s a long time until Easter!5 -

Heather, I am also worried about travel. My trip is scheduled for the end of March to Tucson. There's no telling how widespread the virus will be by then. All we can do is wait and see. And wash our hands!
I did pretty well with exercise but poorly with diet in February. Goals for March are the same: stay under calorie budget and exercise six days a week. Well, I am off to the gym.

Heather: Is Saga having boat troubles, virus worries for passenger health, or is this a weather problem? :huh: I am a very conservative soul and would be strongly considering cancelling this trip and rebooking after worldwide virus worries decline or disappear. :flowerforyou:
Allie: The staff departures definitely speak of very poor management by your employer. Have you been looking for work in another dentist office? I would be, in your situation. I’d also look at other types of work. I like Karen’s advice to go forward with a fierce heart and also Barbie’s advice to come from a place of love. Anger and resentment in the workplace are not good for you or the patients.

Luci: My doctor advised me to have a glass of red wine daily. She says that resveratrol in red wine is heart healthy. I have partially implemented her advice, and I add just a little red wine to a glass of sparkling water each evening. So far, so good. Marijuana is legal in OR but I don’t want to smoke anything. I wouldn’t mind MJ brownies, though. :devil:

I planned to go to yoga today and went to the gym where I learned that our teacher is at home with sick kids. I rode a recumbent bike for 100 calories worth and came home.

Hi Everyone,
I am 58 & a newly retired teacher. I have about 25 lbs I would like to lose to improve my overall health. I am only 5'1" and built like a fire hydrant (short and squatty). I have lost 12 lbs since I retired (June 2019) and I am now off of blood pressure meds. Retirement has helped me increase my exercise, better my diet and I don't have to deal with middle school kids. Eating is my biggest culprit but I am working on that. I currently lift weights 4x per week and go to spin class 2x per week and my daily step goal is 11k. When we go back to daylight savings time on March 8, I plan to increase my daily step goal to 12k.
March goals:
Lose 5 lbs (current weight - 167)
Continue gym routine (weights & spin class)
Journal my food intake (every morsel)
Count macros
Look forward to hearing how everyone else is doing in March.

I have 2 teens in high school. Most of my days are running them around or working late. I work full time as an accountant and also started my own side business of bookkeeping. My goals for March are consistent tracking of food and increasing my workout schedule to 4 days a week.

Katla - For Saga at the moment it's business as normal, with restrictions on people who have returned from high risk areas and more monitoring before hand and on board. They are doing only waiter service for meals, no buffets and have increased the hand sanitation stations, which were already prolific. The problem for us is not the fear of catching something, but being confined to a cabin for 14 days if someone else tests positive. We are keeping an eye on numbers of people in the UK affected, currently pretty low, but expected to increase. The trouble is, it would only take one person to ruin everything.
I am grateful that we have a couple of weeks to see how things are going and I am especially grateful that I am not CEO of Saga.
Our pizza was fantastic, the atmosphere was great and the waiters were perfect. I have squeaked under maintenance calories because we walked 3 miles to the kids and back.

I just got a male friend request and sure enough when I looked him up all his friends were female. To me this is creepy.
I admit I bought a wipes to keep in my car when I go into a store or restaurant I use one or more to open doors, touch the key pads, wipe off the table at the restaurant, etc. Your right Macha I should have done this all along to cut down on catching others illnesses out there.
So far this year I had a cold that lasted about four days. I feel fortunate to be healthy thus far.2 -
Did a spinning download workout. The plan for tomorrow is to take the Power Hour class
After exercise stopped at a store to return one thing then went to the crochet group here, then went out by the pool. Just laid in the sun. Really, too windy to go in the pool, but it was nice to lay in the sun. Just went to a few thrift stores with a friend of mine and got some DVD’s (yes, ones I didn’t have, there are some like that)
Drkatie – sending virtual Kleenex. While this isn’t something I gave up, but for Lent I’m making the “sacrifice” that I don’t eat anything after dinner. I know that I really shouldn’t do that, it just sits on my stomach, so I want to change it. I know that the one year I gave up white flour (this must have been about 15 years ago) and ever since those 40 days, I rarely care for biscuits, etc. Before…just put it in front of me and watch it disappear. Now even today I can have one and that’s enough

Rori – you never cease to amaze me how you (and M) care for your hubby. Hope your brother gets better fast which will help lift his spirits.
Karen VA – your mom was a lovely lady. It’s so interesting to look at pictures from long ago, see the clothes they wore, etc. Look at Lynette’s bell bottoms!! Oh, yes, how well I remember always have a corsage for Easter.
Speaking of men on here…I got a friend request from another one today. I just deleted it. Wonder why I’m getting so many lately?
Luci NC – I don’t even tell Vince what I put in his food. Otherwise, I’d never hear the end of it! And if he had even a tiny stomach ache, you KNOW it’ll be because of what he ate.

Good afternoon. Welcome to the new ladies, and thank you to Barb for keeping us going.
I have an unrelated question regarding Covid-19.
So back when H1N1 hit us, 1 out of every 5 US citizens caught it (according to the quick research I did on it this morning). The mortality rate was very low, thankfully, although I did lose a childhood friend to it. (He had asthma and didn't seek medical attention soon enough).
Even though that was only 10 years ago, I don't remember this much hype about it. Am I forgetting, or is there something different about this virus than H1N1?
Any medical people (Karen?) out there who want to help me understand why this seems so much worse?

A couple good things are developing from this coronavirus situation.
1) Increased emphasis on hygiene and cleanliness.
2) Increased emphasis on personal space with limited physical contact.
I'm delighted with those developments! The university has already started cleaning the place ... really cleaning not just a quick vacuum once in a while. And I hope the metro will do the same.
Winter flus here have been getting worse and worse. Maybe cleaning and letting us maintain personal space will help!

It seems to me that flus have been increasing in intensity and length.
I recall that when I was in my Business Admin course in about 1997, I came down with a flu including a temp around 101-102F. I was away from class for 3 days before the temp broke and I felt better. But I was ridiculed by one instructor in particular who thought I was a) faking it because flus don't last 3 days, or 2) should have come anyway because a fever is no reason to stay home.
I've encountered that sort of attitude at different times in my education and work experiences.
Flus were once thought to be 24 hours or maybe 48 hours if they were really bad. A cold might be 5-7 days.
Now we seem to get things that hang in there for a month or more. I don't know why ... maybe it's that people in general seem to eat less healthy diets and don't exercise as much. Maybe we've become more complacent about hygiene. Maybe it's the trend toward open plan workplaces. Maybe it's because we're a global community now. This might be an area that needs research.
Whatever it is, I am hoping that some good might come of the raised concerns now and I'll add a third thing to my list above ...
3) Increased focus on online courses and working from home!!
Meanwhile, my workplace has just issued this advice:
Simple things you can do to protect yourself and others from novel coronavirus (COVID-19)
1. Wash and dry your hands often, with soap and water. Germs can spread through hand contact. Wash your hands before touching your face (especially lips, mouth, nose, eyes), food and drinks, and after coughing, sneezing and going to the toilet.
2. Wash and dry your hands well. Make sure the soap and water come into contact with your whole hand – palms, backs of hands, thumbs, fingertips, wrists and the webbing between your fingers. Rub your hands for 15–20 seconds, or for as long as it takes to sing the ‘Happy Birthday’ song slowly.
3. Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue. If you don’t have a tissue, use the inside of your elbow. Put used tissues in the rubbish straight after use (don’t keep germs in your pocket!) and then wash your hands.
4. Keep your distance. Try to keep a metre (a large step) from people who are coughing or sneezing.
And I'll add that these are not just things to protect ourselves from COVID-19 but also from all colds and flus.

When I arrive at work after taking the bus, when I get in from walking at lunch, and when I arrive at home after taking the bus, I wash my hands.
And I'm debating about bringing wipes onto the bus to wipe down any place my hands might touch to brace myself as the bus goes around corners.

I’ve been reading books written by Janet Chapman. The series is about time traveling highlanders. I read them the first time several years ago. I owned most of them and recently found a few more books in her Highlander series. I enjoyed them in the past and have enjoyed them again. Sadly, Ms.Chapman died from breast cancer several years go.

Allie as you look for other jobs have a story ready if they ask about your previous employment where you can put a positive spin. (I know it has not been positive for you.)
I like how you say you are ready to try something else a great thing to say. I would say nothing negative about your previous employer. Hard to do, so have some practiced answers ready.
Perhaps concentrate on the training you received and how well you got along with the patients. Maybe ask a patient for a reference. Your boss wanted you to stay yet you knew it was time to explore other options that fit your skill set.3 -

Today wasnt to bad.. he is trying to talk me into staying..but I told him the truth that it is way to stressful and it was time to move on..so my last day will be the 14th..I am working the next 2 Saterdays so Aimee will get a bit of a break... she will be the last one left,she said she is proud that I did what I did..6 -
Pat in Georgia: I thank you for recommending "No Saints Here". I also retired exactly 2 years ago at age 62 to be full time caregiver to my DH who has dementia. It's been a roller coaster, as I'm sure you can relate. I can't wait to check my library for this book. Your fiber owl is beautiful.
DH had a good two and a quarter hours at the Vets Club. Said he liked the food, the live music and most of all the friendliness. I've suggested going back tomorrow, but he's reluctant to go two days in a row. Hmmmm. I'm going to test him on this tomorrow after breakfast. I enjoyed my mini-respite by doing my banking, checking a furniture consignment shop for a desk and shopping for Easter decorations. Also took myself out for a Mediterranean-themed lunch of hummus, tabouli, and veges on a pita. Yummo! Felt utterly decadent taking my sweet time over each morsel.

Not sure why this ones considered worse than H1N1. I do know for some it turns into deadly phemonia others it doesn’t.Seems like an off illness. If we get it we get it don’t think it can be avoided if your areas hit hard. My areas oopsie incident we may be on the news like Wuhan soon. Will see if God shows mercy on us or not. I do know this is making it hard to plan a Birthday Party for JR (me,Dad,hubby,y JR only). Leaving it up to hubby he good about making decisions I can’t handle the stress of it.

Poerava, I was about ready to throw in the towel, was so depressed and short tempered that everything was really getting to me until I read that book"No Saints Here" and discovered that I was experiencing the same things that every PD caregiver goes through. It gave me insight and a way of dealing with the demands, the spills, the accidents, the suspicions, etc. that are just par for the course in caregiving. Enjoy the book. I have it on my Kindle.
