Wow, lots of HUGS to be doled out 😭
The coronavirus is wreaking havoc on everything. The only good news I've heard was from @noblsheep that it has peaked in China and hopefully on the way to being controlled.
6 miles for me this evening. Nothing to write home about. But it was a preview of summer...79F with 14mph wind. 😒

@shanaber That is fast! I can't even imagine.
I did a slow 3.5 miles on the treadmill today. I felt like I needed to go slow after Sunday's long run. The first mile or so felt a little tough, but it got easier. I probably could have gone longer, but my plan called for 30-45 minutes of running and that took me almost 44 minutes. I'd call that a win. I did a mile total warm up and cool down walks, so total traversed was 4.5 miles.

Been in such a rut lately but still pushing on, though. Went out for my run this evening, showered, out and still in bathrobe soaking wet when a knock at the door to find little neighbor boy across the street made me this, so sweet and proud of himself, and I gave it to my little boy (an edible spider).16

Yeah, I had friends signed up for the NYC half this weekend. Disappointing for sure. I think we're going to see a bunch more cancellations in the upcoming weeks. I have a Spartan race in NYC coming up in 3 weeks and there is a lot of speculation about that being cancelled.
In related news, our university is suspending in-person classes after this Friday until the end of March at least. We have spring break next week anyway, so I think they are trying to get ahead of that. I'm in no way prepared for this and am not looking forward to trying to move my classes to an online model suddenly in addition to the already overwhelming deadlines I have coming up. Serenity now.

I did a short treadmill run before mace class tonight. I did a run in Tahiti on the fancy NordicTrak, and followed the trainer's workout which was billed as a "steady-state" run but did have short intervals of slightly faster pace every few minutes. It was not a bad workout - it kind of forced me to run at a slightly higher pace than I normally would on the treadmill, but clearly probably should be doing because that was the "easy" pace of the two she used. I also listened to the trainer instead of music on my headphones and I learned some interesting things about Tahiti. They have huge oysters up to about 10 lbs that they get really big pearls from. And the Tahitian language only has 5 vowels and 11 consonants.
And I got my first email from the Peloton guy.17 -
The Canyonlands half has just been cancelled. I was optimistic since it’s in Moab (not exactly a big metropolis and no major airports) and not an enormous gathering.
This is really for the best for me physically. OTS is fur real. I ran 7.5 this past Saturday and it felt like I’d run 20 the day before (it was my second run in 4 weeks). Someday, my legs will come back, my RHR go back down to normal, I will be able to run and workout and my body will not be like a disconnected marionette...
So running a half wasn’t really a great idea (but I was going to wing it anyway).
I do have real A races this fall but I need to be healed up in order to train for them. And we really don’t know how long this recovery is going to take. So not running a half this weekend is for the best.
The fact that I’m actually interested in running at all is a big thing (that left me sometime in December-not long before I cut runs short because I couldn’t actually move any more). So huge improvement there.
The fact that I’m really not upset about the cancelled race (when it’s on my bucket list) is a sign that It’s really a good idea that I’m not running it. I’m really not in any condition to be doing it and I think my brain knows that (even though my runner brain was still going to give it a go).
I’m still deciding what to do about the travel. I’m waiting to hear what the options are for deferrals/etc. There’s tons of fun stuff to do in Moab without the race; but I may end up moving the whole weekend to another event.
Still kinda bummed though. I have other stuff (also on my bucket list) on my schedule for next March already.

Here’s a fun question
I will be in Portland the weekend that i am supposed to do my 20 mile run.
There is no other day of the week i can do it.
Do i skip it and stick to the schedule and just do 22 miles the next scheduled long run?0 -
I wouldn’t skip a 20 mile run if there’s any way to avoid it. In a traditional plan they are big for physical and mental prep for time on your feet.
But if you can’t avoid skipping it; it’s not like you’ll die or anything. A lot of plans only have one 20 mile run anyway.
1 -
@Camaramandy648 how many weeks out from your marathon are you? Can you run at all when you are in Portland?
I personally did not do more than 20 miles in marathon training so I don't think you need to do 22 necessarily, regardless. If time permits, I would take a cut-back week and run as long as I could that weekend, and then back to 20 miles the next week. Assuming this would still allow you to have at least 2 runs of 20 miles before your race.4 -

Portland is a beautiful place to run! There are so many great routes.1 -
@LoveyChar that looks delicious- I miss crunchy salty carbs, spiders or otherwise! How cute is that!
@katharmonic assuming your a professor? I can’t imagine the stress of having to deal with online classes. My daughter is a senior at UT Austin. We are assuming they will move to online classes after spring break next week. She is basically doing 2 anyway for her biz certificate and her senior design project is group meetings with her team so not too different. I feel bad for the lab kids. How is that going to work? Hang in there!2 -
March Goal: 90 Miles
3/1: 7.62 miles
3/2: 5.05 miles
3/3: 5.02 miles
3/5: 5.05 miles
3/8: 7.60 miles
3/10: 5.32 miles
35.66/90 miles completed for March
234.74/1000 miles for Run the Year Team Pavement Pounders
I ran 5.3 miles today. It was a really good run. I tried to keep it easy and not pay attention to my pace and just go by feel. I ended up with an average 10:42 mi/min. I am hoping to run my HM in May at about a 10:00 mi/min pace. So I felt like that was pretty good for an "easy" run. Lately on my weekday runs it has been dark when I started, but light by the time I get home. I knew that after the time change it would be dark the whole run and I was kind of not really looking forward to that. But since there was a full moon last night it was nice and bright outside even though it was dark. And it wasn't cloudy so not only could I see the pretty full moon, there were lots of stars too so it was a lovely run. The weather was nice too at 50°F with just a very light breeze, not the 15-20 mph winds we have been having. Tomorrow and Thursday are supposed to be around 65°F. It may be a little warm, but it is the kind of warm that I really don't mind. I wore shorts and a t-shirt today and am planning on shorts and tank tops the next two days. I really love just being able to throw on a shirt and pair of shorts and not have to worry about what to wear.
2020 races:
5/16/20: Run for 57th AHC Half Marathon
11:07 and the long run is 10:18 to 11:31. Sounds like you are on plan for a 2:10:00 goal half marathon.

This. Puddle here has nailed it. If you have to miss your 20 this week, just do your 22 next week and if you can maybe do another the following week pending the rest of your plan and such. Getting 2 good and long runs in near the end of a marathon plan is a good thing.

@mbaker566
So very sorry for your losses! I hope you can keep going and find some version of peace ✌🏼1 -
I'm not entirely sure I will make it to my monthly goal, but I am going to push to get as close to possible.
My job just dropped a bombshell on me that I'm "temporarily" being moved to 12 hour overnight shifts. No choice in the matter. By temporary, it could be 2 months or it could be through the summer.
I am not a night owl. I have done 3rd shift before and I struggle so much to sleep during the day. On top of that, I'm pregnant, so I'm always tired already and have enough issues sleeping
Someone send good vibes because I desperately need them. I spent a good half hour crying in the shower this morning because I was so tired and my body will not let me sleep.18 -
I can’t do the quote thing for each answer here because I’m short on time BUT here is the schedule for the last seven (or is it six now?) long runs until marathon day (April 25!)
This weekend: 12 miles
Fifth weekend (also Portland): 20 miles
Fourth weekend out: 12 miles
Third weekend out: 22 miles
Second weekend out: 12 miles
Last weekend out: 8 miles
I think yeah, only six long runs left!
@enaliba yes! I have never been so my *hope* is to get up earlier than my twin brother and get a few miles in. He is not a runner .... he’s more of a beer, wine, and food guru and he loves his cigarettes (i understand - i used to smoke too). Also I am slow and a 20 mile run would take HOURS. This wouldn’t be a thing but I haven’t seen him in four years and I don’t want to take one second away from spending time with him. So ...
Would it be just absolutely stupid of me to do the 20 mile run THIS weekend or the weekend I get home instead of Portland weekend? I also need a cutback weekend to coincide with the weekend that i have the kids for Spring break, which is actually the weekend i get back.
So can i manipulate the schedule to 20 this weekend, however and as many as I can next weekend, then another cutback, then 22? What is the best way to maneuver this?
Also - @LoveyChar remember everyone said that after they run a marathon they fall into a drifting state until the next thing. You’ll pull yourself back up! And. I want that cookie. I’m still trying the plant based diet to see if it really does help with inflammation etc ..... tomorrow is no-tuna, tuna salad. I’ll letcha know how it goes rotfl
My son is still miserable and i am due back at work tomorrow.
My sister is LOSING HER MIND over coronavirus. I’m not sure I buy into mass hysteria, but my concerns rest with the legitimacy of the issue. There’s a part where we need to do all that we can (wash. Your. Hands.) but also.... i really don’t want to be quarantined.... but also .... people that could die from the virus would be grateful if it were contained. It’s not just me I have to care about.
But also.
I don’t want them to cancel the marathon and I don’t want to have to miss out on Portland.
We shall see.

@brittanystebbins95 Oh wow! That sounds stressful especially if your pregnant! I have always struggled with napping during the day even when exhausted! I wonder if taking up meditation, yoga, or something that can help you wind down after the night shift. And maybe some room darkening curtains? I hope it’s the shorter time they mentioned.1
-
Just joining in. I'm getting back into running after a 3 year injury/laziness break. My goal for March is 50 miles, and I am already 10.87 miles in. Anyone else using Vi trainer?7
-
@Camaramandy648 - so my friend and occasional running buddy, is an enabler.... and so when I joined her in Portland last year for a work trip for her, and I got to see some family, and she found us the “bridges to brews” race, which went over some of the iconic Portland bridges - it retired the Fremont bridge last year, but as a result its technically covering more bridges this year.... so I checked to see when that was this year.... it does not line up.... but I found a virtual race https://www.eventbrite.com/e/2020-international-day-of-happiness-1m-5k-10k-131-262-portland-tickets-83908790451
Other than that.... where in Portland is your brother? We can connect via private message if you aren’t comfortable in saying in the open. But that can narrow it down on what I recommend. There is a path along the Columbia, a path along the willamette, there is forest park... which is huge and beautiful, and parts are probably very hilly. And I can also ask my brother where he usually runs.
(He didn’t join friend or I on our race because, and I quote “his dad bod wasn’t ready for that.” -like my fluffy butt actually was, but, whatever) he ended up having to run half the route anyways, because he was friends designated drinker for the “brews” part, as she had to get back to her work thing, and the race cratered max between his house and there.)
As to how many miles you are running.... I maxed out at a half marathon, so I am absolutely no help, there.... but I am more than willing to consult my knowledge and my Portland expert relatives (some of whom do, at least, run) to help come up with a fun and beautiful route based on needed mileage and Where you will be based.
But, my brother also being a beer, wine, booze, food guru.... you will have a BLAST in Portland!!
In other news.... My run didn’t happen today. Some work issues and brain worms led to some ego/stress lifting/lifting fails on bench. (see my Instagram or Facebook if you want images).... I should know by now that one can safely run out an attitude, but not safely out lift an attitude, and should have started with the run. But, some of us are put on this earth, solely to serve as a warning to others.... so, here I am5 -
Isn't Portland a beer, wine, booze, food guru place? Last time I was there I think we pretty much ate our way through! I love it there and yes there are some gorgeous places to run. I especially like running along the rivers!
@bearly63 - I am a firm believer that pups know when we are in pain or healing and want to help. Either that or they are totally opportunistic when they see us lying around and can get an extra snuggle in! When I had my hand surgery Hobbes had to lie across my lap helping to support my bandaged hand and was oh so gentle when he moved around me. Very unlike his normal crazy self.
@duck_puddle - what is OTS? Overtraining syndrome? Sounds like something more serious.3 -
Got 4.5 miles on trails - running part of the Tour de Wolf trail which I hadn’t run before. I think @T1DCarnivoreRunner talked about running it before and being surprised at the hills? Anyway I was surprised by the hills, most of the way out is a long uphill on a sand/gravel road. Also we got lost in the woods and turned too early, thus the short run instead of the 10k we were going for. Which is probably for the best since my knee is complaining about all the uphill running.
Not a bad run, nice to see some new scenery, and I’m enjoying daylight savings time.
We saw the worst dog, with the worst owner. Can’t blame the dog, bad owners make bad dogs. There’s an off leash area nearby but he was not in it. Instead he was more than a mile out of the off leash area, racing around chasing deer, three deer exploded out of the woods, went flying by us and out onto the road into traffic chased by this yellow lab, barking his head off. Sound of guy in the far distance calling for his dog. Dog gives up and runs off in a random direction to bark at more deer. Man appears, still calling for the dog, meandering along on a flipping bicycle! Does not even have a leash with him. We point and say, “That way,” And he says, “Yeah, he gets excited when he sees deer,” as if that’s some sort of excuse. Why did you bring your unleashed disobedient dog to a park full of deer, genius? He’s lucky neither the deer nor the dog got hit by a car or I would have possibly broken some part of his anatomy. Or at least gotten the rangers involved.
Nearer the dog park (but still outside the signs that said past this point all dogs must be on leashes) we met some other, very nice dogs. Really pretty bright red bully crossbreed of some sort, stopped instantly when he saw us and waited for his person to catch up and walk with him. Looked at us adoringly. His owner was still naughty but at least her dog was properly behaved even if she wasn’t herself.
Since the park is right next to the Baptist hospital where our Coronavirus cases are being treated and I don’t trust the hospital staff not to get infected, we went home instead of eating out. The roads were also really empty compared to that time of day usually.4 -
Gosh I’m so behind. Need to read back through a few million posts to catch up but I’ve managed a morning run this morning and also got out on Monday. Lovely sunrise runs, getting warmer. I was ok in a short sleeved top today. Yay!
Hope everyone is well and enjoying some more spring-like running.

Did my track workout today on the dirt track, so basically 350 and 700m fast intervals. So far no announcements from the race organizers, although people are speculating both ways on their Facebook page as to whether it's big enough to meet the definition of mass gathering for an outdoor event. If you ONLY count the runners, it's ok. But start counting volunteers and organizers and for sure if you count spectators, you're over the limit.3

So are you asking about doing 20 this week, and 12 next? That is a possible option. You need to judge your own body and condition and work from there. It is certainly a reasonable option. As is just skipping the run if you must.1 -

This week's mileage is going to be pretty minimal, with the goal of just getting something done every day. This morning was a slow run with the little beast, Stella. I feel like I am neglecting this poor dog lately, and then I force her to run with me when I know she doesn't like it, but I was short on time. Hopefully I will get out of work on time and can make it up to her with a nice walk tonight.
@bearly63 yes, I am a professor. I haven't taught online before so I don't know how that's going to go. Fortunately I just had my students do labs yesterday and have an exam in another class tomorrow before we shut down the on-campus classes, but managing those through the online environment is going to be a challenge.7 -
My goals for 2020 are to stay injury free and healthy. I am also possibly going to try again for my first half marathon.
3/2 - 3.1 miles
3/3 - 3.9 miles
3/4 - 2.6 miles
3/5 - 4.1 miles

3/9 - 4.0 miles
3/10 - 2.2 miles
3/11 - 3.0 miles
Total- 25.4 miles - 1.6 miles behind for the month.
I feel really good after my cut back week last week. My easy runs feel much better and most of my soreness is gone. I am also doing a better job foam rolling almost every night.

Good morning running peeps!
Hope everyone gets their run in today!
I had my MRI follow up....I have been officially "hobbled" for 8 weeks or so. No running, no walking (I guess for exercise), no lower body weight bearing exercise. I am trying to remember what he said I could do....cycling, swimming, slow yoga, upper body strength stuff? It's all kind of a blur tbh. I want to heal properly and go into major bone density saving mode which I have actually been in for a long time since my mom had bad osteoporosis. I have been doing what I can to hold on to what I have via diet and exercise. Really want to avoid the drugs...lots of issues with the drugs available. Anyway, not complaining. Could be so much worse. 🙏
I will just get some huge upper body muscles, and a 6 pack. Always wanted one to replace my one pack. And I will continue to stretch and roll. And possibly look into swimming, although that requires a bathing suit in public so there's that. I will enjoy your running reports so keep em coming! Does washing hands burn calories?14 -
got our run in
I wasn't going to take speed demon but i put on my running belt and she started crying. so we went. the plan called for hills so i went to a local park. hills but not nearly as bad as remember. sunday will be worse. by at least double.
she wanted to go fast. she cried whenever i stopped for a picture. we saw deer. the deer were very curious about speed demon. we stopped at a few small waterfalls. and sunset. it was a beautiful run. it helped some, the physical struggle, working thru some of the empathy of someone who feels he has nothing left but to stand in front of a train rather than hurt their family again. i know that pain.
i told my friend at dinner the other night, i couldn't do that because someone would take my Old Girl, there might be fights over her...but no one could take Speed Demon being a recovering feral. no one i know could deal with her. so even on my darkest days, i have to stay. I stay and run in those that can't like my friends who didn't have any fight left for them.19 -
@Camaramandy648 Yes, I remember. You're sweet, thank you for thinking of me. I'm excited for you...get your training in as stressful or frustrating as it may be, because nothing is as fun or rewarding as the big day, the big payoff for all the hours put into it and then it's over and you can relax for however long you decide to.
@bearly63 I'm glad you get to at least stay active even if the physician's recommended activities aren't your first choice. We'll be cheering you on in weeks with news of your first run!2 -
