New to this group but I am going a marthon in March because I am not a fan of running....I am currently at 20.6 miles. If I finish the 26.2188 by next week I might make a run at 100 in march....haha pun intended.8

March goal: get back to running 2-3 days per week. 5K in April.
3/3 - Ran 1.76 miles (total run: 1.76 miles)
3/4 - Walk 3.3 miles (total walk: 3.3 miles)
3/5 - Ran 1.8 miles (total run: 3.56 miles)
3/7 - Rode stationary bike for 20 mins - - - Week 1: Goal accomplished
3/10 - Ran 2.01 miles (total run: 5.57 miles)
3/11 - Walk 4.01 miles (total walk: 7.31 miles)
I agree about the Coronavirus/Covid-19 hysteria getting a bit out of hand. I totally understand the point about being safe, but it's not a super deadly, massively infectious plague that is wiping out populations. If people would just be vigilant, use standard precautions, wash their hands and be sensible I think most of us should be ok.
I am a full time student, most all of my classes are on-line, but I do have 1 class during the summer that is an actual class and I do a work-study at the campus. So far, those are still on, nothing sent to us about the campus closing. In fact, we just got an email saying the same thing I did, they are monitoring, but ready if something major happens.7 -
@Duck_Puddle yeah I decided my Garmin has a wicked sense of humour... she reckons I could run a half in 1:51:19. My PR is 2:30:19. That's a SLIGHT difference!
The organisers of my HM just issued a statement to say that they will issue a statement at some point tomorrow with a decision one way or the other. Welcome to Spain, why do it today if you can make people wait til mañana? *rolls eyes*8 -

That would be funny if not so frustrating. They're probably tired of people asking them what's going on.1 -

We got updates that they were going to send something out in the coming days as well. Turns out they were trying to convince the county that people healthy enough to be running a half marathon are probably not fighting off a massive viral infection (vs a random gathering of whoever), and everything else was contained/banned/etc. Spectators aren’t physically possible on the course so it was literally just runners, deer, sheep and a handful of volunteers who could be avoided by using your own hydration options. So they were putting off the announcement hoping for a different outcome.
So fingers crossed it’s just to give more time for them to convince people to let it happen (if it’s safe).

Morning all.
Downloaded the Hal Higgdon app last night. I guess I'm officially training for a marathon... I'm going to get my run streak to 90 days, cause I've enjoyed doing it, then I will follow the plan. I know rest is vital, especially when doing those distances. I'm contemplating swimming on those rest days as an active rest.
I've already looked ahead to my longest runs, and I think im free all those weekends, of if not can do in the days around it, hopefully.
Will see how it goes. Is 4hrs OK for a marathon? I had to pick an approximate time, and so I doubled my HM time, though I'm definitely in better condition now than I was before the HM. There is no official cut off time for the marathon, though the marshals finish after 4.5 hrs.
So this morning I ran 5k, then did a strength training. Now work.

I’m surprised the marshalls finish after 4.5hrs considering most average joe runners will take about 5 or more. At Auckland the marshalls finish after 8 hours.
Four hours is fast - that’s 5:40 pace the whole way. I would take your half time, double it and add 20 minutes to half an hour as someone suggested above. However, you’ll get a much better idea of how you’re shaping up as your training progresses.
They say for your first marathon you should aim simply to complete it - it’ll be a PB regardless.7 -
@ContraryMaryMary Yes, yes, and yes!!!0

@Avidkeo I agree 100% with everything @ContraryMaryMary said. You are missing SO MANY FACTORS! You really can't "guess" especially since this is your first. Goal should just be to finish and if you run that particular Marathon next year, you can aim to beat last year's PR. As a first time Marathoner, I can tell you the pride in just finishing under alotted time because 26.2 is alot of miles on your feet. ALSO, not all Marathons are equal. My brother-in-law ran 5 and could tell me level of difficulty, in his opinion, based on hills and elevation. My father-in-law has run hundred, all kinds and many vastly different. PLUS there are other factors to take into consideration. A Marathon is twice the miles of a Half, so the problems you may encounter during a HM, you may want to double. I saw alot more issues with people past the halfway point than I did before then. You have to prepare for anything as best as possible. I learnt more through experience than I ever could from hearing or reading about a Marathon 'what to expect'!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Also, you will be training and it might be spot on or not. I don't think I properly carb loaded and fueled before my race. Lesson learnt and I will keep trying until I get it right. Hopefully you won't have anxiety the night before. I got 4 hours of sleep, which affects the run I'm sure.
I'm running a trail Marathon in 12 1/2 weeks. I have NO IDEA what I'm doing, none!!! I may spend a considerable amount of time on my butt, I don't know...but...
Goal, because this is a first of its' kind for me: Finish! And if I like it, do it again and BETTER next year!
Best advice I can give you and I'm still pretty "fresh" in the sense that I'm just getting started and learning, myself.3 -
Sorry i am just dropping in to post and run. Today was a rough, tough day and anxieties have gone into a tailspin. The forecast for running club time was for 80% chance of rain and it was going to be a rush as we had parents evening first. I was tempted to go straight home for a stiff drink but reader i went to running club. 1.5 tonight - felt better than last week and i felt a lot better for the run.10

What a sweet jester from your neighbor @LoveyChar .
Sorry for all of the cancelled races.
@brittanystebbins95 That's awful. I would have 12 hour shifts, night or otherwise. I hope you can find some way to get the sleep you need. I'm sending loads of positive vibes your way!
Welcome @hsslove .
@bearly63 Love your attitude. Hope the 8 weeks goes by quickly for you and you are all healed and ready to get back at it!2 -
@katarina005 Thank you! Yes, finally starting to feel back to normal.
So just saw that DC pulled the permits for my half marathon, so no race for me. Not surprised in the least, I just really hope they plan for a new date instead of canceling straight out. Although I’m disappointed, I’m glad they are not having it this month, it’s just smart.3 -

This weekend: 12 miles
Fifth weekend (also Portland): 20 miles
Fourth weekend out: 12 miles
Third weekend out: 22 miles
Second weekend out: 12 miles
Last weekend out: 8 miles
I think yeah, only six long runs left!
@enaliba yes! I have never been so my *hope* is to get up earlier than my twin brother and get a few miles in. He is not a runner .... he’s more of a beer, wine, and food guru and he loves his cigarettes (i understand - i used to smoke too). Also I am slow and a 20 mile run would take HOURS. This wouldn’t be a thing but I haven’t seen him in four years and I don’t want to take one second away from spending time with him. So ...
Would it be just absolutely stupid of me to do the 20 mile run THIS weekend or the weekend I get home instead of Portland weekend? I also need a cutback weekend to coincide with the weekend that i have the kids for Spring break, which is actually the weekend i get back.
So can i manipulate the schedule to 20 this weekend, however and as many as I can next weekend, then another cutback, then 22? What is the best way to maneuver this?
Also - @LoveyChar remember everyone said that after they run a marathon they fall into a drifting state until the next thing. You’ll pull yourself back up! And. I want that cookie. I’m still trying the plant based diet to see if it really does help with inflammation etc ..... tomorrow is no-tuna, tuna salad. I’ll letcha know how it goes rotfl
My son is still miserable and i am due back at work tomorrow.
My sister is LOSING HER MIND over coronavirus. I’m not sure I buy into mass hysteria, but my concerns rest with the legitimacy of the issue. There’s a part where we need to do all that we can (wash. Your. Hands.) but also.... i really don’t want to be quarantined.... but also .... people that could die from the virus would be grateful if it were contained. It’s not just me I have to care about.
But also.
I don’t want them to cancel the marathon and I don’t want to have to miss out on Portland.
We shall see.
So are you asking about doing 20 this week, and 12 next? That is a possible option. You need to judge your own body and condition and work from there. It is certainly a reasonable option. As is just skipping the run if you must.
@PastorVincent yes! Does it make sense to do that?
I have to manage my IT Band - but i think if i keep being smart i will be able to manage it!
If you can manage it, it is better to do that than miss the run.0 -

Honestly? 4 hours will put you near the middle of the pack, a bit on the faster side of middle really. So if you can do that you will be doing great.
ETA: Ops, that is for MEN. For women, you will be even a bit ahead of that.4 -
Pittsburgh Marathon sent out an update. Was nearly a full page of text... and said essentially nothing. They could have sent:
"Yo! I know yinz want to know if we will cancel, but we do not know either way yet. Just chill, keep training, and we will let you know when we know something."
And been done with it.8 -
ContraryMaryMary wrote: »They say for your first marathon you should aim simply to complete it - it’ll be a PB regardless.
This really. Focus here. Running a full Marathon is a major accomplishment. Do not lose sight of that.

Thanks guys.
My aim is to just to finish, don't actually care about the time. As you say, it's the first one so just getting out there is an achievement. Mentally I think im closer to the 4.5hrs...
ETA @PastorVincent ahhh 9k ill mentally adjust that to just finish bahaha. And yeah that honestly is all I care about. If I do the half, THAT I'll want to do in around 2hrs, my Pb is 2:03
@ContraryMaryMary I can't remember their wording, but the Marathon starts at 730,and at 1 most of the support is removed though the finish line stays open. It's mostly on footpaths.0 -

Ah, that’s 5.5 hours, which makes more sense - I reckon 80% of the runners will be done by then.1 -

18 miles yesterday. The last one was mostly walking. I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but I do not think it's possible that I will sort it out in the next 7 weeks. My husband read my mind and tried to cheer me up by reminding me that it's not out of the question that we'll be well into the Pandemic by then, and the marathon could be canceled, anyway. He really gets me.

AND they just announced both the 5k I was running this Sunday and the HM I was running next Sunday have been postponed. I know it's for the best and blah blah blah but pfffft. All those weeks of training. Last year I had to pull out of this same race due to injury. I just want to go sit in a corner and stuff my face with chocolate.
ETA yeah yeah, first world problems I know.9 -

I feel so much better about my own "over the 4.5 hr cutoff" marathon times now... whew! I wouldn't've even signed up for that - but 5.5 I can doeleanorhawkins wrote: »AND they just announced both the 5k I was running this Sunday and the HM I was running next Sunday have been postponed. I put down the phone and went for a run. Great idea!!! It's a beautiful day 12.something km on back roads, through the woods, mud, it was pretty quiet and peaceful. I think I'll post this and sit my phone out of sight for a while.
March goal 100 miles (stretch goal 200 km)

I love visiting Pittsburgh and hearing the Pittsburgh speak!

I've got a 50K relay this weekend in Charleston, SC but the race director has told us it won't be cancelled. He sent out an email outlining the extra steps they were taking for hygiene and even though it is a sold out race there will only be about 500 people there and it's outside in a county park.
I'm also signed up for the Cooper River Bridge Run in Charleston the first weekend in April. They usually have about 40,000 runners for that one. I won't be surprised if it is cancelled.
We have fitness centers on-site where I work. The one that I frequent is outside the plant gates and is open to retirees also. Yesterday, they announced all fitness classes were cancelled and the gym would be closed at this location. I can still attend classes at other sites but they aren't really convenient.5 -

I do not say yinz normally, I had y'all there actually, but I realized that PGH would put yinz in so I changed it.
I am not native here yet I guess4 -
Feeling a bit under the weather today (it's a cold from my nephews, fortunately no fever or coughing).
3/1: 9m
3/2: 1.75m
3/3: 3.25m
3/4: 6m
3/5: 3.25m
3/6: 5.5m
3/7: 5m
3/9: 1.25m
3/11: 6m
3/12: 3m9 -
Congratulations on both your marathons @Duck_Puddle
Here's hoping your HM is still on @mandabeth34
Honestly I think there is very little chance my marathon will happen as it normally has over 1/4 million people in one form or another. Still have to keep training as if it will happen.
Went for 8.5 miles last night. My body tried to con me as there is a bail out point at 4 miles and just before I got there my hip started hurting and then my back joined in, so I walked half a mile, started running again and at 5 miles all those bits of me shut up and I actually felt as if I was running again. Then it started raining just so my brain could argue with me and say I should have listened and bailed out.
Oddly very slow last night at 11 minutes a mile running and then this morning I walked 5 miles at 12:30 a mile which is as quick as I walk at full fitness. Go figure!
7 -
@LoveyChar that TX heat and humidity....makes you want to run naked because even tanks and shorts are too hot. I usually take a month of transition to get used to it. And try to run early. And the best thing....go for a run on town lake, then jump in the always 70 degrees Barton Springs Pool.....incredible and such a great recovery.
I wonder if they will close it due to the pandemic pandemonium? Total bummer if they need to.4 -
I was born and raised 40 miles, 40 minutes north of Pittsburgh and spent 21 years there. We ALL say "yinz" (and it's a running joke) if you're within, probably, a 100 mile radius of Pittsburgh. Even my kids joke about it and they are pure Texan "y'all" girls here and "y'inz" girls up there in the summer. I've been in the south 22 1/2 years and in Texas for 17 years. When I go to PA, people tell me I speak with a "southern twang." Never my intention but ex was Texan, kids around other kids in Texas schools, myself working in the public school system, and most of my friends are Texans so I have lost much of my Pennsylvania speech. I remember Madonna getting flack for speaking with a British accent, despite not being born of a British upbringing. Well she's lived there a long time. You just lose it after awhile. I can relate. You wouldn't know I was a Pennsylvanian. My kids ask me when I'm fixin' dinner. We don't fix dinner up north; we cook it. Were always fixin' to head out somewhere too. I don't think twice about any of it anymore, a little PA lingo here or there, a little Texas twang, and a little Spanish I speak it all when relevant, usually. Western PA definitely is a very special and interesting little world I love.2

@bearly63 We've been to Barton Springs once and loved it. There were two much older hippy women children of the 70's topless and absolutely carefree and confident there, first time I've ever seen something of the like in public. I just love the weirdness and beauty of Austin. We used to go to Shakespeare in the Park (coming up, wohooo) almost every spring in Zilker Park. I'll definitely have to move the runs to avoid hellacious heat. A good swim afterwards would be incentive...0
