Hi all, all this talk of new shoes and merino stuff (I own none, and had no idea of its magica properties!) is making me very sad that I can’t shop right now. I desperately need new running shoes, and ordered some online at a great price but they came up too small so have gone to my daughter. I think I’ll have to wait until next month to indulge and am just running slowly trying not to slip with worn treads 😬

Well done @eleanorhawkins! As @Avidkeo said, there are idiots everywhere. But you all be fine, and you will start to feel more relaxed running outside soon. Yay to time off dreadmill!

@brittanystebbins95 - Sounds like you’ve gone from uncomfortable to uncomfortable! Sympathies!
@_nikkiwolf_ - I’m just doing what I can at home - mix of free weights (I have a very small set) and body weight circuit type stuff. And some yoga core stuff thrown in as well. But it’s good to be able to use my upper body again- have been signed off any weights for so long!
Today I did my planned 4 miles. Going to aim for at least 4 miles or so every other day and try and come in at a neat 60 miles or just over for 100km.
Ooh and in other news, I donated my £115 for my miles run in April but I also made a donation page and opened it up to closest friends and family and it’s now at £515 for the children’s hospital! Very happy 😃

Wow, came in here to quickly catch up from the weekend and quickly got sucked into @katharmonic and her amazing accomplishment! Well done. I am truly impressed.
Completed my 18 miles on Sunday. My calves were cramping a lot in the last couple of miles, but it was much better that the previous week's 17 miler and afterwards I had chips and guacamole so I consider the whole thing a win.

@eleanorhawkins I'm glad you were able to get outside. Try to be patient with the idiots. Think of them as puppies. They are just so excited to be going outside that they can't help themselves!

Here is a picture of the snake from yesterday. I hardly ever can post pictures from my phone so I thought I'd try from my desktop.
I am trying to decide whether to run my HM this Sunday on Mother's Day, or on the Sunday the 17th. It was originally scheduled for May 16th, but Sundays work better for my schedule for long runs than Saturdays. Part of me wants to run it on the weekend it was originally scheduled on, but part of me wants to run it on Mother's Day. Looking at the forecast right now it is supposed to be around 55° - 60° this week and the 17th looks like it will be warmer at around 67° at the start with a chance of thunderstorms. It is kind of early to put too much stock in the forecast for the 17th, but if there is lightening I won't run in it. And the idea of starting at 55° is more appealing than starting at 67°. Yesterday I started at 74° and ended at 83° and it was really tough at the end. I don't think that one week will make much difference in my conditioning. I don't often run the HM distance, but I usually have long runs in the 9-10 mile range and feel like I can handle the 13 miles any time.6 -
Just getting around to posting my goal for this month. Last month, I ran 121 miles but I have a busy week this week which includes going into the office a couple of days so I'm aiming for 110 miles.
Did my first run for the month on Saturday. I had signed up for the Union Half Marathon which was scheduled for April, got postponed to June and then the organizers decided to make it virtual. The virtual run had to be completed and times posted by May 16. I was running with a friend who had also signed up and made the mistake around mile 7 of asking her when we were going to run our virtual half. we decided to just go ahead and get it done. No PR because we had stopped to chat with other running friends a couple of times (at a social distance), waited at street crossings, etc. without stopping our watches but we got it done.
Yesterday, I went hiking in North Carolina on the Nolichukey River Gorge 10-mile loop. My calves are so sore today. I've been foam rolling them hoping they don't protest too much this evening when I get out for a run. It was gorgeous weekend to be outside. Sunny and highs right at 80F. We only saw 2 other hikers on the loop and a group of horseback riders taking a break.2 -

Busy busy with work. So we got a new doggie, his name is Champ and he's just over a year old. Not sure if I talked about him before here, he lived on the next street and runs away from them every day and comes here to visit Macy and play. I finally asked them if they ever want to rehome him to let me know. She said no, then today he was here again and she came over and said we could have him if we want. I'll need to post a picture of him. He's never been to a vet, needs to get neutered and is as sweet as can be and Skip will have to take him when she moves out ha ha

Was going to run the morning, but A/C went out over night and had to deal with service man. Of course, have a big leak somewhere in the system, R-22 freon, etc.. It is a 20+ year old unit, and it is 95F here today, but damn this is a bad time for this to happen!!! Sooo, a new unit being installed tomorrow. May run in the morning, but coming home to a hot house will not be fun. Just may have to put it off until Wednesday6

@kgirlhart I'd probably run it this weekend instead of waiting. But, then I tend to have the "do it when you know you can, because you don't know what tomorrow is going to bring" attitude. That snake looks very big and very scary. What kind is it?
@skippygirlsmom Awww. A new puppy! So exciting. Sounds like they weren't the best pet parents if he's never been to the vet. Glad they decided to give him to you.
@Scott6255 Sorry about the AC going out. That stinks. It seems to always be the hottest days when you don't have it. Glad you could get a new one so soon.

Thank you all so much - there are too many to name but I loved every note of encouragement and congratulations. I'm feeling pretty good today. I got a SOLID night of sleep and I've been eating pretty much double portions of everything (a meal being for 2 people is just a suggestion, right). My calves were pretty sore this morning and I just generally felt really lazy. So I lazed around.
This afternoon I had to kick into gear a little bit to get some work done and then I took Stella out for a run/walk. My hamstrings protested the most, but I kept I took it very easy with lots of stops and starts for Stella to smell things and pee on things as much as she wanted. We ran part and walked part and I think it helped to stretch out a little.

So the total for the first 4 days in May is kind of crazy. Prior to this, my highest weekly mileage ever was 45 miles a couple of times when I was marathon training. Last week (monday to sunday) I had 61!
Before I decided on this crazy challenge, my goal for May that I stated in this thread was to do the 138.9 mile challenge that includes completing 5k, 10k, 15k, HM, FM, 50k and 50 mile distances. Here's the progress on that:

FM 7.5 miles left
50k 38.5 miles left
50 mile 88.5 miles left
Now that I think about it, I should go the other way! I have the 50 mile done! Then it just gets easier, right? Hmm, will think about that as a strategy. But I'm not going to run a full marathon or a 50k in one run or one weekend, I can promise you that.8 -

Well... I did get my virtual 5k done yesterday. But I may have been a bit over tired and dehydrated from staying up too late with fermented beverages for family zoom game night on Saturday, so I walked waayyy more of it than I should have. So, as predicted, I kind of failed at both the running and the spelling portions. And when I realized I messed up the spelling it caused more walking, because I apparently can’t route plan and run at the same time.
So, the “expectation” is what’s I did on my practice attempt, the “reality” is what I did for the actual thing. I went down an alley to try and make a superscript A when I realized I ran across the bottom of what should have been my A. It kind of maybe worked?
As I mentioned, there were raffle prizes for various things, like the spelling, and another was “running with your pet.” Well, I don’t have a pet, but I was trying to get entries so if I won my sister could get 5e pet related prize..... so, this was my attempt at “running with my pet”
I also furthered my karma from even THINKING I was having better pedestrian/dog/car luck than most of you... as 3 loose dogs tried to tackle me, fresh from their playing in the creek.... they were plenty friendly, but still startling, and at the time they were coming at me, I was picturing you guys recent encounters, and not “friendly.” But luckily, wet/muddy/startled was the worst I got.
Today’s run was uneventful. Other than i really didn’t want to do it, and it was chillier than I expected.
So, adding 2.01 today, and 3.55 yesterday = 9.21/50. I realize it’s only the 4th, but this is the longest I’ve stayed on pace for my goal, in a long while. Like I think last month it was after the 4th before I put a mile on the board.9 -
I’d love to join this group! I’d like to set my goal at 40 miles (I’m a total beginner!).

Well the weather has finally turned to poo here. Cold and raining. First jacket run of the season, but the bonus was, I had the waterfront path - in fact the entire suburb - to myself for the first time since lockdown began.
Now about to cosy up in front of the first fire of the season!5 -
Finally on the board for May with one mile... test run on my knee. Hurts. I may end up counting walking miles for this month. I can tell from the way it hurts that it’s the extremely canted roads in my neighborhood making it hurt. I’m going to wait until tomorrow and see if running the one mile has aggravated it enough to count as a set back before I make any decisions, but right now it’s definitely feeling worse than before I ran on it.
It’s also gotten hot here, in the mid 80s today.8 -

Yep it's equally cold and wet here - 5hrs southbof where @ContraryMaryMary is. The clouds and rain briefly eased after lunch and I managed to get out for a good walk, and strength session (non-running day today), and I saw snow on the mountain! So yeah thats why it's cold.
In the afternoon hubby and I took the girls to the park to feed the ducks. We let them have a really good run around, given they've been cooped up inside for several days.
So I have all my winter gear out, and I'll be doing 6.5k tomorrow. I'm about half way through the plan and I'm definitely not sick of it yet actually I look forward to each run. I'm really looking forward to my 24k run on Saturday!!5 -

We are having a couple of days of 90 degree weather, but it is supposed to cool off again starting tomorrow. I got in another two miles last night.
My shoes finally shipped from Brooks and should be here tomorrow, so I am looking forward to breaking them in!

Cold and rainy is my favorite weather to run in You never get too hot, and usually have all the roads/trails all to yourself3 -

Another random, perhaps dumb question.
How important is stretching? Or even warming up, for that matter? What sort of things do you do to warm up?
I will admit, I haven't been taking running very seriously for very long. About a year, maybe. So i'm still inexperienced and learning as I go.
I don't really warm up, I just kinda step outside and go. And I've never been one to stretch before or after a run. Or at all. I hate stretching. I despise it. It hurts and I'm miserable and annoyed every time someone makes me do it (ahem, husband, looking at you.)
But, I'm also super inflexible because of my hatred for stretching and I do feel like this makes me more prone to injury. Seriously, you guys...I can't even touch my toes without bending my legs. I have never been able to in my life.
Does it help? Does it improve your running? Is it even worth it?
And how do you make yourself not hate it so much?!0 -

So, very. A proper dynamic warm-up will reduce injury risk. You should always do it.
Easy light stretch post-run helps with recovery and helps prevent DOMS
