@hanlonsk Hahaha on the spelling. You almost did it! I love your pet too. Glad the dogs were friendly.
Welcome @ereilly311 ! Being a total beginner, be sure to take it easy and don't do too much too soon. The goal is slow and steady build up so you don't get injured and can stay with it for the long run. We're here to support in any way you need it. It's a great group!
@rheddmobile Sorry you're knee is hurting more. Hopefully it feels better today.

alright, race report.
yeti 24 hour challenge
i didn't think it would be that bad. it was tough.
5:30 the first round was with speed demon. went out fast. didn't mean to but speed demon wasn't taking no for an answer. it was hot and humid. but no people on the trail. it felt good. i thought i was ready. got back to the car. driver's side won't unlock. sounds like the actuator is broken. crawling in from the passenger side till the weekend. my brother hopes he can fix it. added a mile so i could say i did a 50k9:30 second round did walk/run with my Old Girl. it was still humid and it was tough. it was a city run. not too many people out and about. 1:30 three, i took out Speed Demon. it was a nice night. saw a few people. i'm sure it was strange for them to see a runner so late at night. city run5:30 four, i went out by myself. really had to convince myself to get up. it was a beautiful morning. it felt really peaceful. more run/walking. it was starting to get a little tough. city run. things were hurting. the five miles felt like ten.
9:30 five, took Old Girl. city run. walking only. she was panting early on and it was already warm and humid. saw lots of people out and about. we worked on the leave it command because she either wants pets or to bark. i let her say hi to one older lady. long five miles. just didn't seem to end. we tried to find shade but there didn't seem to be a lot to be found1:30 six. Speed Demon and I finished where we started back on the hank aaron trail. tons of people. still warm and humid. did run/walking. she was not happy about it but we hit as many puddles and ponds as we could because she was panting more than normal. it wasn't too bad. strenuous but knowing i was near the end helped. the second last mile was super long. neverending. but the last mile, that was a good mile. it went fast (in my mind, not me).
so that's it. my training was not quite up to par but it was still doable. i managed to get it done at a 16:02 min/mi pace. i feel pretty good about that. i managed to stay hydrated. needed more food. i see why broth is popular because i didn't want to chew. chewing was too much work. i didn't have a lot of elevation change so i'll need to train hills. the course for my other ultra in june 27th is a trail with a lot of hills. slow build ones, steep ones. a section that is sand. i wasn't super sore. a few hot spots. one blister.
i wonder if it's harder to do it all at once and get it done or to do it broken up like i did. because getting up and moving was difficult. I didn't cry. I've often cried when i've reached a distance milestone.
i think i'll need another high end sports bra. even the cheaper high impact bras didn't support me as well as my Juno.10 -
@mbaker566 you rock girl! Damn impressive 24 hour challenge. Y'all are killing these challenges! You are showing us all how strong you can be in a tough situation.
Went ahead and ran 6.2 miles this morning before AC guys come. Temp felt good (64F) after (trying) sleeping in a hot house last night. But fighting 20mph wind wasn't too fun. But got er done.

@mbaker566 W00T! well done!1

Good luck! I have had zero success being locked in with snacks. We have a small side group of runners and myself, (the wannabe runner again someday), if you want to share your food ventures, thoughts, plans, short-comings and wins. There is no format to follow. The invite is for all so the rest of ya don't get jealous I hope to see ya there, come tell me what you are eating today!3 -
Woke up at 4:30 AM for work, worked for a few hours, and then did my run. It's much more challenging to get out the door once I'm fully awake. My usual routine is to roll out of bed and hit the road before my brain fully comprehends what I'm doing.
5/1: 2m
5/2: 8m
5/3: 18m
5/4: 1.75m
5/5: 5m8 -
Adding in last night's run with some specific drills mixed in the middle.
Basically what I've been doing with these drills 3 times/week is run to the park to warmup, pause Garmin, do some mobility exercises and then some super specific speed drills, then restart and do a cool-down run home. I was able to catch a break in the thunderstorms/rain when starting. It started to rain as I was finishing up and the hail didn't start until I was less than a mile from home (park is about 1.25 miles as you can tell from my distance). It didn't get very big or too bad... mostly I was just wet when I got home. It got worse later on.
2.55 miles yesterday

@mbaker566 Oh, hey fellow crazy!! Big congratulations on your 24 hour challenge! I felt you in my soul reading your report. 5 miles is rough when you have only 4 hours between runs! You must have gotten very little sleep.
For me, I think it's much harder to do it all at once. I keep comparing the 48 hour challenge to running the marathon, and both were HARD. I still can't picture doing another marathon, it was so mentally and physically grueling for me. But I could do the 48 hours again (not anytime soon). Recovery wise, no comparison either. Now, the big difference is I was "racing" the marathon vs. just running my regular pace for the 4 miles each time.
Anyway, way to go! Awesome effort and endurance.1 -
@mbaker566 Super job!!!1

How important is stretching? Or even warming up, for that matter? What sort of things do you do to warm up?
I will admit, I haven't been taking running very seriously for very long. About a year, maybe. So i'm still inexperienced and learning as I go.
I don't really warm up, I just kinda step outside and go. And I've never been one to stretch before or after a run. Or at all. I hate stretching. I despise it. It hurts and I'm miserable and annoyed every time someone makes me do it (ahem, husband, looking at you.)
But, I'm also super inflexible because of my hatred for stretching and I do feel like this makes me more prone to injury. Seriously, you guys...I can't even touch my toes without bending my legs. I have never been able to in my life.
Does it help? Does it improve your running? Is it even worth it?
And how do you make yourself not hate it so much?!
<Engage full hypocrite mode>
So, very. A proper dynamic warm-up will reduce injury risk. You should always do it.
Easy light stretch post-run helps with recovery and helps prevent DOMS
<Return to normal risky behavior>
I can only relate what works for me.
My warm-up consists of leg swings (both straight and with kees bent 90 degrees) and a slowish first k. For a race, I'll do the leg swings and then run a few hundred meters.
My post-run stretching consists of calf and quad stretches.
If I don't do my post-run stretching, my legs tire to the point that I need 2 rest days a week.
If I do the post-run stretching, I can run 6 days a week and rest 1 day.
So for me to run consistently, the most important part of my workout is my post-run stretching.4 -
Warning: Sad COVID-19 story in spoiler...feel free to skip.A long time ago, decades really, I had a falling out with my family and ran away from home. I ended up on a couch at a friend named Joe's house. Joe and I got along well (thankfully!) and I lived on his couch until I got married and moved 3000 miles away. Joe was one of the groomsmen in my wedding.
Joe eventually married Sandra. We kept in touch, but being 3000 miles away in the days before social media was really a thing we lost touch. On one trip back to NJ I did show up at his house, but he had moved.
Decades go by without any further contact and just the other day my sister-in-law saw a FB post about Sandra. Sandra was an ER tech at the local hospital and succumbed after a many week-long fight to COVID-19.
To give you an idea of the kind of person she was, check out some of the notes left about her:
https://patch.com/new-jersey/tomsriver/s/h3rpy/berkeley-woman-hospital-technician-made-ultimate-sacrifice
We should have tried harder to find them again, and now it is too late. I guess this is a warning not to let too much time pass before you reach out to people.18 -
May Goal: 100 Miles
5/3: 11.07 miles
5/5: 6.25 miles
17.32/100 miles completed for May
453.48/1000 miles for Run the Year Team Pavement Pounders
I ran 6.25 miles today. It was a pretty nice run. There is a "cold" front moving in so after the last few days of 100°F+ weather it is only supposed to get to 80°F today. The temperature started out at 69°F this morning and was down to 67°F at the end of the run. I think a couple of hours later when I left to go to work it was 60°F. The temperature wasn't bad this morning, but the 18 mph NNE wind was a little much for me. But all in all a nice run.
@scott6255 Sorry to hear about your A/C. Hopefully they can get the new one up and running before it gets too hot again.
@quilteryoyo and @katharmonic I think it was a bull snake. He was big and did startle me a little, but I'd rather see a big non venomous snake than a rat or a mouse. And I did decide to go ahead and run the HM on Sunday. That way if something happens and I can't do it this week, I can always do it next week. And I think with the cooler temperature I will get a better time.
I thought about you when I got up this morning @katharmonic. I was still sleepy and not quite ready to get up. I don't know how you managed to get up in the middle of the night and run. I'm still impressed and now I am impressed with @mbaker566 as well! Way to go! You are true badasses!
@brittanystebbins95 I am terrible about warming up before I run. I mostly just try to not start out too fast and build up my speed as I go. And I'm not always good about stretching after either, but I do try to do about 30 minutes of yoga after I run. I think that takes care of the stretching.

So sorry @PastorVincent . It is too late to reach out to Sandra, but not her husband. Perhaps he needs to hear from you now. You can be there for him when he needs you, like he was there for you when you needed him. Just a thought.
@kgirlhart Glad you got your run in early, before it got colder. I'm with you on the snake vs rat! Good luck on your HM on Sunday! Hope it's a go weather wise.

Today's treadmill run is brought to you by The Walton's. It's been ages since I have watched them and I don't recall ever seeing the episode I watched today, even though I'm pretty sure at some point I've seen them all. Anyway, it was a good distraction. I love the old wholesome shows.
Today was scheduled to be a Fast Finish Run...easy for 20 minutes and then 5 minutes at moderate level. I completed that and then continued at an easy level to reach 3 miles. I also walked one mile.

May 5th- 3.1 miles ( first 5k of the month... hopefully not last it felt good)

So ah yeah. Much like @PastorVincent there are two schools of thought, what you should do and pretty much what most actually do lol.
So you *should* do some dynamic stretches and brief warm up - you can Google and find hundreds of methods of doing this. And cooldown/stretching is supposed to help with DOMS (delayed onset of muscle soreness) - though recent research suggests that stretching doesn't necessarily help.
Personally, I do a few leg swings and squatted calf raises before a run. I started a couple of years ago when I had an injury (shin splints) and read that dynamic stretches was supposed to help, and now it's just a habit. For a long run - anything over about 10k - the first couple of Km are basically a warmup anyway...
I try to remember to stretch after a run, my calves anyway because I can get pretty bad shin splints and posterior tibial tendinitis and stretching is supposed to help. And if I'm feeling sore in my hips and gluteus ill definitely have a stretch and roll of those areas after a run. But rather than being focused and doing it all the time, I tend to be reactive, stretching because I'm a little tight/sore etc.
Now when I strength train, I always warm up - starting with some dynamic movement, and build up slowly. And I always stretch after. This is something I was ALWAYS taught to do, and is now habit.
So um, yes you should do a warm up and stretch, it doesn't hurt to do it. Lol
Or as PastorVincent says, do as I say, not as I do lol3 -
@mbaker566 amazing!1

Well i was rudely woken at 530am by our spa beeping (it's a cheap inflatable spa. It's awesome, but cheap...). So going to have to look at that later. Right now I'm sitting in front of the heater, enjoying my coffee and breakfast, then going out for a 6.5k run. It's only 8 degrees today (around 46 for you lot) so definitely getting colder. I'll wait another hr before going out. Might be 9ndegrees then! But the rain and wind has passed. I'm slightly disappointed, I seem to keep missing the crap weather to run in. Both happy and sad about this, I need to train in crap but always glad to miss it haha.7

My usual every several day check in. Keep up the great running....I am vicariously burning calories and carbo-loading for all of you. I am walking more and planning on my first jog on my birthday. Hip still hurts a bit, especially after a 2-3 hour bike ride. I want to get new running shoes. I will definitely have more cardio endurance from the bike.
@PastorVincent I am so sorry to hear about your friend's wife. She sounds like she was a wonderful human!

@PastorVincent So so sorry.
@mbaker566 Wow! Fantastic effort completing the challenge. Not sure I could at all.
@rheddmobile Much hugs, totally understand
Got 5 miles today. Didn’t think I would as the during the first 1.5 miles I has such bad TOM cramps. Started out fine and felt good and thought maybe I should do a 5K for the one of the virtual races I have on schedule. But had to stop and walk for a bit, run , walk. Finally they settled and I was able to run and at a pretty good pace after. Nice and cloudy too so that helped. I’ll try again for the 5K another day.
Re stretching. Yeah one should. And I should. Sigh. I’m going to make an effort to now though lol3 -
@PastorVincent so sorry about your friend's wife. She was a true hero.1
