@Teresa502 they don’t let horses on our local trails, but I see so many on the farms alongside our greenways, such beautiful animals. Congrats on the virtual HM.

@brittanystebbins95 so I’m terrible at warming up and stretching, my daughter swears by it, she even started to do yoga. I have to say the people I know who do both very seldom are injured, unless it’s something unavoidable. Skip (daughter) had started getting massages (I know she’s lives the life right) before the stay at home. We have a friend who is a big time running, like qualified for the Olympic trials and she SWEARS going twice a month even helped prevent injury. So like I always tell Skip, do as I say not as I do, and do both.

Holy *kitten* the tornado sirens went off just now and scared the crap out of me (it’s kinda stormy looking and really windy), then I realized it was the first Wednesday of the month at noon. Ha ha

@Avidkeo I have gotten in the habit of wearing a pack even in shorter trail runs because I don’t like having anything in my hands in case I fall Skip wasn’t allowed to wear her pack which she trained with during her marathon and she was upset since she found out at the last minute. Afterwards she said she wish she had it thought there were aid stations every 3 miles because was using a hand held for water and a belt for nutrition and didn’t like that. She also felt the need to refill her water bottle like a security blanket and wasted time doing so.

@skippygirlsmom Champ is adorable. He'll be a great running buddy! Sorry, but had to laugh at the tornado sirens comment, after I saw that it was just a test. That has to be scary, especially when it's windy and stormy looking. Which begs to question, what would happen if there really was a tornado warning at noon on a Wednesday?
@kgirlhart Sounds like a near perfect run! My pictures never do the subject justice either. The moon was really big and beautiful!

My plan called for a Foundation Run today of 25 minutes - basically I just do an easy run. I can't seem to keep my HR in Zone 1, but Zone 2 is doable. Since I have been running further most running days, I just can't seem to stop before 30 minutes. So, I continued on to get in 2.5 miles. Also walked a mile. All on the treadmill while watching NCIS.

So I planned to get up at 6 this morning to be out the door by 7 in the hopes there wouldn't be as many idiots posing as runners or serious walkers. As the plan called for 4 miles, I also plotted out a route which avoided the nice wide flat attractive streets and snaked around the slopy back roads. Turned out both were excellent choices. There were a lot of runners, but most of them were 'proper runners' with enough common sense to at least wear buffs to pull over when they couldn't give others a wide berth, rather than people pretending to exercise just to be allowed outside.
Of course, all the best laid plans.... couldn't get to sleep last night, then my daughter woke us up at 3am to report that a mosquito had attacked her and she needed ointment (she gets nasty reactions). Then couldn't get back to sleep for ages.
Still managed to get up and out on time. Really enjoyed the run, but legs are feeling the different between treadmill and hard sidewalks. Not sure I'm looking forward to tomorrow's intervals or Saturday's long run, both of which will be done on the treadmill.
I also noticed my oldest shoes have about as many km on them as the previous ones did when they started causing trouble. That, combined with the return to road running, lack of physio visits and no swimming, is probably what is making my legs sore. So what did I do? I ordered new shoes. Pray my husband isn't home when they arrive, please!

@quilteryoyo it's funny because I wonder about that too, we'd all die I guess. No actually it goes off for a short time like 10 seconds the most for the test and of course goes on and on if it's really a tornado. Someone probably just needs to say "yep I hear her" and that is the end of the test. Thanks Champs is a sweetie, I'm really trying to get him to want to be with Skip more these dang animals just cling to me.
@mari33a I agree I could never give him up no matter what. We have worked with him at the front door a lot since he was a runner with them and today I was able to open the door and tell him to wait and he just laid down and looked at me until I said okay let's go out. He doesn't even know how to play with toys we finally got him interested in a ball and he's almost to the point of bringing it back when we throw it. It's funny to watch him bounce across the yard with it.3 -
@eleanorhawkins I'm sure your DH will be glad you are being proactive to keep yourself from injuries. I find a lot of difference in how I perform on the TM vs the road. If I've run on the treadmill a lot, I dread going outside, because I know my performance will not be the same and it will feel harder. I'm glad you are getting to run outside and found a reasonable route.
@skippygirlsmom I'm so glad you got Champ. You are going to be so good for him! Makes sense about the tornado siren too.

My new shoes came in the mail, finally! I went out after dinner settled and ran two miles. It is super windy, but it felt so nice!

I am happy that you are now reconnected with your longtime friend. I wish for you that it had happened in more positive circumstances.
@avidkeo - my water is my security blanket. I just feel better if I have it. Back before I ever tried for something longer than a 5k, I always had a waist belt with water. Now, since I’m trying to stay used to my packs for when my long runs hopefully return to being more than 4 miles again, I just put my pack on nearly every time. In many races it’s been handy because I could swing wide around the chaos/ backlog that is the water station. In others, it’s been helpful because I’m slow and they are often tearing down water stations or even picking up the course in front of me.
It is currently handy because I can keep a little bit of hand sanitizer in 1 pocket, and a mask in another, in case either is needed. (Don’t have a buff, thus the mask, after tweenagers coughing on me the other day.) So, providing it’s allowed in the race rules, I say race with the same hydration you train with. But I don’t like the people part of hydration stations, and I like having my security blanket, and I like knowing I’m set no matter what.
@skippygirlsmom - our siren goes off EVERYDAY at noon- if we ever have a tornado or other disaster at anywhere close noon, we are screwed... like I often don’t even know what time it is when it goes off, I just decide it’s noon when I hear it, and I’m sure I am not the only one.
On a side note, and somewhat related, due to summertime tourist activities (we end up being the outskirts of Sturgis, in addition to the nearby national monuments on either side of us) and them having had issues with severe weather when everyone is outside watching burnouts or whatever.... and that causing significant problems, because of oblivious tourists and locals not having any idea they are about to get nailed by hail/lightning/tornado/whatever... they now actually have outdoor Bluetooth speakers all over the down town area to be able to broadcast messages. In order to know they work... they actually just play music over them all the time, which is kind of nice in a little bitty town.
Anyways, on to at least kind of running related activities.... I don’t actually remember if I have posted since the virtual 5k.. but, one of the days I missed posting.... I had a new experience.... I got chased, and then passed, by an RC car! It seems to have been piloted by a child in the back set of the actual car that soon followed. Perhaps it was the parents way of letting them play with the car, while ensuring the child respected social distancing??? I don’t know, but it made me smile, after I figured out what was going on.
I could have used a rest day today, but it’s supposed to be cold rain/snow tomorrow. So, I just shortened my intervals, and got some sunshine time today, instead. Will likely be doing something different tomorrow.

Quick run in the morning, wanted 8km but ran out of time. It was raining just the slightest bit when I started out, but stopped almost immediately. It was only 15°C but humidity was high, kinda all around meh run.

Woah chatty today haha.
Thanks for all the advice around the hydration pack. I couldn't see anything saying you can't wear one @skippygirlsmom I remember when that happened to her, so have made a point of looking at the rules closely now. I'm going to plan on wearing it cause I want the security of doing what I know. The water stations are every approx 4.5k but I would prefer to avoid them if I can. I remember them being a PITA during my half, and if I can skip some that would be great.
Today I was awake early so just went for a walk, then did my strength session. Feels good to be doing strength again after a month off. Now to keep it up longer haha.
Tomorrow I have to get up at 5:15 so I can get my 11.5k run in before work - I'm starting at 7:30. It's really dark at that hour now, but so nice! Calm. No people. It's wonderful.
C word stuff in the spoilerOur government released information about the next drop in lock down levels today. Sports can go ahead as long as the participants can be traced. I suspect that level will only last 2 weeks, and then we will be down to level 1 which is basically normal life with social distancing and borders closed, so I'm really confident my marathon will be going ahead as long as our current trends continue. Oh exciting!
We had 2 days in a row with zero cases, then had 2 new cases yesterday and 1 today. So it's looking positive. [\spoiler]7 -
So what would you do.
My Garmin isn't syncing steps properly, I get to the end of the day, and it's around 200 off - though it has been as much as around 1200 off before. Eta it syncs all other data fine as far as I know, its just steps that are off a bit. What shows on the watch is more than what's syncing with the Web site.
Garmin has accepted it for me to send it away for repairs/replacement, which means I'll be without it for realistically a month (I'm pretty sure I send it to them here in NZ, and they send it to Australia). I don't really want to be without it while I'm ramping up my training, its just too convenient.
So I can either just use the watch as a running only watch, which I've been tempted to do anyway because i get too wrapped up in the metrics of a fitness tracker anyway, though I do love the smart functions. This means I don't bother about sending it away.
Or I send it away and use strava or something else to track my runs while it's away. And use that time to decide if I still want the smart functions.
Wwyd? And if you would send it away, whar tracking app do you recommend?1 -
Another 5K this morning putting me at 25/80km. It was a very different run today from yesterday. Yesterday I felt full of energy and like I could easily go for another run but today I felt tired the whole time and it felt like I was going so slow and dragging myself. I was positive my pace was going to be slower than usual and the run felt like it would never end. To my surprise, I actually did one of my best times. I do think that I will make my 5K a walk tomorrow. I would rather save my energy for a Saturday morning run.

I did a booboo copying my log yesterday which made it look like I'd run an extra 100km this week. Erm nope. Oops!
Speed intervals in the dreadmill this morning. I can't be bothered with the agro of trying to find a suitable place to run speed intervals that I can get too on foot, is within the area I'm allowed to be in and isn't packed with idiots. Nor can I be bothered with running round in circles, so intervals and long runs will continue to be done on the dreadmill until the situation changes.
My legs are a little sore, and during the slow 3km warmup the knee on my 'bad leg' was complaining a bit, so I wasn't sure whether I would need to abort mission after the first interval. It didn't hurt though and I forgot all about it. Trying to run fast enough to stay on and not fly backwards into a wall is great for mental focus. I should tell Hal, he talks a lot about the need to focus during speedwork.
So anyway, 7 x 400m at 1500m pace and 400m recovery later (plus a 1km cool down) I was done. He who must be obeyed said it was perfectly executed and all of my hard work and dedication will pay off. Yay! So can I go back to bed now?

Too tired to run today. Feeling meh - I've been nursing a sore neck for nearly a week now (can't see an osteo, physio or massage therapist!) and as well as making me feel a bit delicate, it's been impacting my sleep. Tomorrow's a rest day so I'll do today's scheduled run then and have an early night tonight.
First time I've deviated from my training plan and have been feeling guilty, but I know it's ok to not run if I don't feel like it, in fact, it's recommended.6 -

A lighter planned week for miles is fortunately intersecting with a intense week of work. Beginning the day at 4:30 AM, working for a few hours, and then going out for a run. It's a nice way to break up the day and clear my head. It's going to be weird going back to work and then just staying in the office for the whole day (although it will be at least mid-June before I have to worry about that).

Thanks for all the kind words on Champ, he got out this morning and took off OMG Dog I just ran 4 miles STOP and wait for me ha ha He got back to a fenced area I had to jump over a barbwire fence to get to him of course he saw Skip and ran right to her. Ha ha The upswing is the area he ran to is a huge mansion by me and their entire property is fenced in so he couldn’t get out. He is learning.
