Some days I don't know what day it is or even what month it is, but I've built some enduring habits that keep me on track.
One of the habits is checking in with this thread every day. That, along with logging food and exercise, has kept me ON a good path for health and fitness.
Welcome to everyone who is on this journey with me. A friendly supportive community is especially important now.
The name of the thread is "Women Ages 50+" but all women are welcome.
We share about many parts of our lives but stay away from topics that are controversial. I come here for support, not for agitation.

I’ve been reading this thread for a long time but don’t think I’ve ever commented before...decided maybe I’d enjoy MFP more if I participate more. I’m a retired nurse from Ontario Canada and have struggled with my weight forever. I think my highest was about 200 but over the years I’ve managed to get almost to goal...not sure I’ll ever make it but I’m still trying.

Happy June, my birthday month. Ok let's celebrate all month shall we, I shall!😁
I am a IF intermittent faster, so I eat for 4 hours and fast for 20 hours, and repeat. I normally have one meal like an OMADer, but also like to nurse my coffee for a bit. No real changes these days but I feel better. And my skin issue is a non issue. No symptoms, no steroid cream no nothing.👍
Today my vertigo has clicked on. Bed time will come early for this chick. Goal is to eat when I say, and fast when I say. Foods will be less carbs, less sugar and more proteins.👍

Rode the recumbent bike today. The plan for tomorrow is to do a Shape It Up DVD.
Making yogurt. Figure I’d better make some since Jess likes pops, I’ll make some for her. Yesterday she said that she was planning to leave for here today. Boy, she’s cutting it close! She starts working at Banfield tomorrow
Tracey – I’ll be interested to see how Pete feels when we go up. His ADD when I was there last year made him completely clean up all the time. And we know that kids are definitely not masters of clean up!! Now will Pete have relaxed a bit? Time will tell. I hope the next time we go up he will be home so I can see. I don’t think it’s as big a deal to Denise. So if he’s not there, she probably won’t be concerned if toys are all around the house.

Sharon – the first time I heard “monkey mind” was when I was taking a yoga class. A Karen VA stated, in yoga it refers to mindless chatter that can wait
Drkatie – I never thought of bulletins transferring germs, but it makes sense. I’m wondering if our pastor will wear a mask when he preaches. He has CP and it affects his speech. I know that some people have left the parish and gone to another one mainly because he’s sometimes difficult to understand. But you would be hard pressed to find a more loving, caring, compassionate man. Yet, sometimes I think he’s stuck back in the 40’s when you didn’t have to do much to get people to go to church.
Annie DE – I thought if a car had out of state plates, if it was in the city in DE, they would be asked to leave the state or else have to self-quarantine for 14 days
Beth – we use a Polaris robotic cleaner and are very happy with it. As a matter of fact, we had a Polaris for about the first 7 years and just this year had to replace it.

Jessica came home today. She usually comes late at night. Wonder if she remembered to pick up my ceramics? I'll have to ask her tomorrow. I don't remember seeing her bringing it in, but then again, I don't remember seeing her bringing in any clothing, so maybe it's still in her car.

Happy First Day of Winter!!
Fortunately it's actually quite a nice day with blue skies and light winds. If all goes well, we'll go for a little bicycle ride shortly.

10 days until my final exam for my second course this semester.
11 days until I have a 1-month break from university stuff.
21 days until the daylight hours start increasing.

Machka: I love my calendar. I use it every day with pleasure. I put in things that are practical, such as giving the dog his pills regularly. I add in personal events, meetings & family birthdays so that I don't miss someone important. I love putting special events on the calendar and look forward to the fun.

Well, the last two days have not been as great as the first four, but that's okay, they haven't been complete washouts either. Definitely ate more than I should have, and not of carrot sticks, but it is what it is and I shall carry on!
I used to get together with 5 other gals and we would work on our craft projects Monday afternoons. When the kids were young, it was a great chance to talk to adults, now it's more habit than anything, but we've been doing this for a LONG time, so our lives are pretty intertwined. Anyway, since C-19 hit, we haven't been getting together, we did ZOOM a few times, but it's just not the same. Well, tomorrow we are getting together in the backyard of one of the ladies. She will provide chairs, we have to provide our own beverage and snack. I am so looking forward to seeing them all! I think I will ride my bike there, so that will be my exercise. It's not as far as work, but will still be close to 7 km, one way, so should give me a decent calorie burn.
Went grocery shopping today, needed/wanted to buy some icing sugar, went to three stores, and none of them had any! Lots of tp and flour and regular sugar, not quite sure what's happening....
That's it for me for tonight, must get some sleep!

Sharon thanks for the reminder of where we were, that despite that horrifying murder, at least today such can’t be swept under the rug, hidden or somehow made acceptable. Neither can the looting and arson, tarnishes and taints honest protest. :brokenheart:

Margaret the Police Union resisted de-escalating techniques and training to subdue without doing long term harm? Now we’re all reaping their whirlwind. :brokenheart: Hope writing it all out helps you to calm some of the trauma. Going back to the garden is best.

Annie, sorry your sister doesn’t understand the risk she’d be bringing to your parents, especially since they’re already reluctant to shelter in place. You’ve done what you could, now all you can do is pray.
Beth my imagination is right there with yours about the expired temporary license and all those state police between NY and Nashville. Is there any way he can get the permanent license by mail? If its waiting for him at this apartment, could someone overnight it to him? Cheaper than renting a car, or any of those imagined scenarios. Sorry to hear of vandalism in your tiny town. It is madness.

@Sharon Monkey mind is "unsettled; restless; capricious; whimsical; fanciful; inconstant; confused; indecisive; uncontrollable".https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monkey_mind I had more of the anxiety and the other woman alone said she couldn't stop her thoughts was always busy busy in thought even when alone in confinement.
@Margaretturk I'm so sorry you and your son had to go through that with the police. That seems horrible to me. When I was a teen lived in a working class mostly white neighbourhood and it was known that the police would often beat up and possibly worse, working class white teens they caught drinking beer. People said most of the police were trouble makers when teens and just went to the other side of fighting. Here I have a friend who's s.o, is a policeman from the West Indies. I think it was probably just one option of job for someone not into school. he's very kind and was able to take early retirement at around 55, and now drives a van for handicapped people. he seems to be very good at this more caring profession and is glad not to deal w the stress of being a cop.
@Machka and @Suzi I would not do a phd at this point if not working in higher ed or some other specific goal. it's stressful. and a lot of work. and in a few decades we'll no longer be there. there is something to be said to be moving up the ladder to become director (thus a possibly interest in phd for you), women are often hesitant to do so, but then if you are introverted I wonder if that would make you happy. I have most definitely heard that phd is not seen as a plus for some jobs. I have a friend who's an artist and cameraman for weddings etc, and she does NOT put her phd in her cameraman CV/resumé. also in sciences it can make person look more abstract and less pragmatic, (im told) and in arts also it can make artist look like researcher and not artist (I'm told by artist w phd who's a tenured teacher). Like what famous visual artist has a phd? (writers, surely there are many; and people in all sorts of sciences including political sciences). I have some friends who have said their Phds had not served them at all. I'm not sure if it's so black and white. funnily enough we don't use the phd letters and I'm a bit adverse to that. definitely ill at ease, about resentment from family about me having a higher degree
@Heather thanks for understanding how hard it is for solos (or some of us) at present. I have a couple of solo friends who love the confinement, one is introverted and often tired and has too much travel at her work and is intending to change jobs soon ; and the other is big into meditation so loves the sort of more introverted situation of most everyone. She regrets the move to partial deconfinement, but she is 65, has been retired since before 40 (sold jewellery and then retired very early) spends weeks in hermitages and things like that.
bumps/rash, I'm thinking it might be spider or other little bug bites. I live in a 500 sq meters on 6th floor w long balcony and wall of 2/3 window-doors giving onto the balcony. I keep them open very much of the time, so with a few plants inside and outside it's quite conceivable and probable that some bugs get in. it doesn't seem to be spreading like a rash usually does. Also I went to parks 2x this weekend, on Sunday I lay on the grass. I'll keep an eye on its development. since I had bumps during confinement and my GP thought it could be serious and I had an online appointment with dermatolist at her suggestion who prescribed medication (3x a day for a week, but have to start very fast for effectiveness) in a rush for shingles and then lab test of bump showed it not to be shingles....I'm hesitant to run to the dr again. When older there is always this or that to check out. I'll keep an eye for now.2 -
@Sharon actually I did procrastinate yesterday! I realised today (Monday) is a holiday here and thought maybe it's not necessary to send doc for this morning. in fact it's sort of a semi holiday here: optional. Today is another day.
A friend told me about a tongue and cheek book that talks half jokingly half seriously about the pros of procrastination (learning about stuff while surfing on wikipedia, etc).
Yesterday I went to the park, read, walked a bit, bought a pastry, went to on AWESOME online buddhism class. I was feeling: it's Sunday, I need to kick back.
I went to 3 of the tiny nearby neighborhood parks. usually you would have mostly more working class people there: the more middle class people and wealthy will be away for weekend, or in a museum or a class, or in country house, or visiting friends or in a restaurant or café. I LOVED the diversity: clearly all sorts of people were in the parks. I am pretty sure local outdoor life will have increased after confinement. previously you would very rarely see people sitting on a bench in the street chatting. now it's normal (since cafés are closed and parks were closed for several weeks in phase 1). I love that. I went to Italy some decades ago and people would be sitting on benches till late (10pm at least), even little old ladies, just chatting together. Before the parks opened many people took too finding the comfortable curb, step, etc, to sit on on quiet greenish sidestreets which became like mini-parks. people were still using them yesterday even if the parks were open.

I was in two minds whether to go running this morning because of my stiff knee, but I strapped it up as the sports physio had shown me and got myself out of the door by 8.05 am. I am so glad I did. The Hoveites had reclaimed the promenade and the beach. Just the locals out there, running, walking, swimming, canoeing. Blue, blue, sparkling calm sea. Cooling breeze.
The only small downside was that the weekend tourists, grrrrrr, had piled their trash up beside the bins and the breeze had blown it across in some places. Most of it had already been cleared up though.
I was so happy to be out there and I don't think my knee was any the worse when I got back. I then did half an hour of rowing to top up my calories and will add a couple of hundred after lunch.
What a great start to the day, month.
The car is being serviced today. We don't have to have an MOT at the moment because of the crisis, but they are doing the services now. Because DH opted for the 5 year service they come and collect the car, do the service, valet it, and bring it back. We have not used the car since Dec 31st, except for running it once a week to top up the battery and driving a short distance to unstick the brakes. It just sits there burning money. If DH didn't need it to get to the cricket (one day ) we could get rid of it. I haven't driven since we moved here.

I exercise daily- 20 minutes of yoga and 60 minutes of some type of cardio (sometimes it is a 30/30 min split of cardio and strength) IF...I want to be successful in staying with a food plan, I have to log everything. Otherwise it is too easy to "treat" myself and forget that I already "treated" myself. I weigh once a week, for now. More than that, and I find I am obsessing about my weight/food intake. I don't like where my head is at when I obsess about anything; so once a week is enough.
We have had a couple of protest marches in neighboring towns this past weekend. The one in Grand Rapids (25 miles away) ended (after the protesters went home) with rioting in the streets, car fires, businesses broken into and vandalized...That happened Saturday evening. The protest march in Muskegon, changed their Sunday march time to mid afternoon. After the march someone on a loud speaker thanked the protesters for the peaceful showing and encouraged them to disperse. Not sure if the troublemakers showed up in the evening and caused trouble. According to police interviews, the violence and destruction is coming from a coordinated group. They have an app that notifies them of marches, they have ear pieces that they wear and headsets to communicate and coordinate, they even have military grade gas masks. Some people say Antifa, some people say hate groups; but the police have identified one group in particular. I personally think that for every peaceful movement out there, there are people who don't want that and will make it their mission to "sew discord" to keep peace and peaceful change from happening.

I am going to an orthopedist with my spouse for follow-up after her December Achilles tendon surgery. She has had complications from the surgery; especially, we think, from the general anesthesia. Also, a large part of her foot is still numb more than 6 months after the surgery. The surgeon has yet to address any of the complications, not surprisingly, but today I am going to advocate for my spouse to negotiate the signing of disability forms, pin down the plan for evaluating the numb foot, and discuss her delayed improvement secondary to disruption of her Physical Therapy by the pandemic. It's too bad we can't meet with the anesthesiologist who presided over the medical aspects of the surgery, but that is not traditionally done in the USA, so her post-anesthesia syndrome will have to be evaluated by another doctor, her neurologist, who does not have an appointment open until September. I don't expect the orthopedist to be patient while I drone on about all of these issues, most of which he will not address, so I am making a punch list to hand him and tell him what we need from him. I have filled out almost the entire disability form, all he has to do is sign it and tell us when our next visit is. I hope he will sign it as I have written it, but he may refuse. Wish us luck!
