@Avidkeo Sorry you're calf is giving you so much trouble. Hoping the week off of running will get you back to where you need to be.
@Teresa502 Yeah for Garmin sales. What model did you order?
@shanaber I hope the rest day is all your foot requires to feel better. As for the headphones, I think I would ask for another replacement since there is still a year on the warranty. As for running early - I don't. I wish I could, but I am a night owl and hate getting up early. I may have to this summer though, so I can run before it gets too hot.

@shanaber On workdays, I'm typically starting my run between 5:30-6:30 AM, but on the weekends or vacation days, I usually sleep a bit later and don't run until 8-9 AM. So no. Unless I've got the motivation to run before work, I'm not naturally rolling out of bed early.3

@rheddmobile Regarding the circadian rhythm thing, I think my husband is that way. It took me a while to get that he isn't just "sleepy" if he has to get up early, he genuinely struggles to function. As someone who is a morning person but can pretty much adjust to a variety of schedules (I worked overnights for a couple years), it was initially hard for me to grasp and I thought it was something he could just decide to get over, like how I could power through a night shift with an extra cup of coffee. Nope, it's not like that at all. Fortunately, he's also able to do his work at a time that fits his schedule.4
-
@Avidkeo Sorry about your calf, but sounds like PT was good and encouraging!
@quilteryoyo glad your Dad is doing better!
Great job everybody on getting something logged for Global Running Day! I was very tempted to just put in 1 mile, but I stayed strong and resisted to try to give my PF a long deserved break. Still haven't logged any runs for June
I MAY try to do something this weekend. Just depends on the level of pain.5 -
Question - I know many of you get up really early before work to run. If you didn't have to get up for work would you still get up that early and run?
Absolutely! Pre-pandemic when I was working in the office, I got up at 4:00 am and met some friends to run at 5:00 am and then showered at a work fitness center adjacent to my office building. Now that I'm working from home, I still prefer running in the mornings before work. Since it is daylight earlier I can get out of the house by 6:00 am and since I'm flexible on when I start working and I don't have to look presentable, that time works. I'm more of a "morning" person though. Raised on a farm where my parents made us get up and outside working before it got too hot in the summers. It worked well because then we would have our afternoons free to go to a friend's house or the local swimming pool.
Even on the weekends, I generally get started by 6:00 am.

@quilteryoyo - I ordered the Forerunner 245 Music. I think it will serve my needs quite nicely.
@katharmonic - Perfect summary of my thoughts on trail running! The trail I ran on yesterday was pretty overgrown in spots and ran along the river for a while. I was so paranoid of stepping on a snake! Thankfully, only a big turtle was in my path....that I know of!2 -
@kgirlhart - if you tried to send me a message I didn't get it so I tried sending you one.
@rheddmobile - I am the opposite of you and your husband. I took a job in college where I worked the night shift. I was not supposed to be scheduled the nights before classes the next morning but it never worked out that way. I struggled to stay awake at work and then ended up sleeping through all my classes. I had to quit or I would have flunked out! I worked for a French company (HQ for US division in Dallas) and many of my staff and coworkers were offshore (all over the world). I drew the line at 5:30am meetings anything earlier and I would decline. Sometimes I even ran when I was on conference calls when they would schedule something over my blocked out 'run time'.
@katharmonic - This video made me think of you with all your Spartan races Love the trail race meme, so funny. It is pretty much my thought process in road races too (without the snakes!).
Thanks for all the feedback on getting up in the morning. Glad to know I am not the only one who struggles with it.5 -
June Goal: 100 Miles
6/2: 6.55 miles
6/3: 7.06 miles
6/4: 6.72 miles
20.34/100 miles completed for May
583.55/1000 miles for Run the Year Team Pavement Pounders
Today's run was so hot already. I got out right at 6 am and it was already about 75°F. Plus it was humid and just felt awful. It took me a couple of miles to start feeling in the zone, but eventually I did and I had a good run. I ended up with just over 6 and a half miles. I feel like June is off to a pretty good start. It's so frustrating not having my Garmin. It is too easy for me to lose track of time in the morning. Hopefully it will be here soon.
2020 races:
11/7/20: Run for 57th AHC Half Marathon5 -
Got two miles in this morning - 72 deg and humidity is already at 80% - so I'm officially on the board for June at 2 miles out of 40.5
-
Beautiful, humid summer runs. On work phone call this morning, a co-worker mentioned that he was already sick of summer. It's really only been summer here for a week!
6/1: 1.75m
6/2: 5.5m
6/3: 6m
6/4: 5m
4 -
I had a 7 am dentist appointment so I didn't get out until lunch time today. The temp was 81F but the real feel was 91F. I "warmed up" for half of a mile and then did some hill repeats. It was a real sweat fest! I gutted it out for 3.71 miles.8
-
i didn't even run, maybe it would have been better if i ran but was out for 20 min and came in with 5 mosquito bites walking around the work parking lot.7

@shanaber being self-employed and working from home means I get to choose my hours. I could easily start and finish work easier to run in the afternoons/evenings, but I just can't do it. I'm tired enough by the end of the day as it is, I really don't think I would manage to run. Obviously in southern Spain early morning is pretty much the only time of day running is bearable in the summer, too.
Having said that, the only time I get up really really early is in July/August for medium and long runs. The rest of the year I aim to be up by 7am and out the door by 8. Yes, it takes me an hour, 2 mugs of coffee and a banana to make me functional enough to put one foot in front of the other without falling over them and vaguely resemble a human being.
Funnily enough I am not a morning person at all. I HATE getting up early for anything EXCEPT running. I take that to mean I like running A LOT, even if I'm not very good at it lololol
Haven't kept up with reporting in this week. I just have Saturday's long run to go and that's me finished with Hal's base training plan. HM training officially starts on Monday. I'm a little concerned about whether it was wise to move up to an Intermediate plan (used the Novice ones 3 times now) as the weekly mileage gets considerably bigger. I think. He's being a tease and won't actually let me see the plan until it starts! Only one way to find out I guess.
I took the plunge and booked an appt with the evil physio for a massage/sort out. Legs aren't too bad considering I haven't seen her since February, but my calves are starting to develop the knots that I know lead to injury if left too long. It isn't for another 10 days so I have time to get my head round the idea.
01/06: 3.75km fartleks
03/06: 5.02km base
04/06: 6.9km hill repeats OUCH
June goal: 120km Run so far: 15.67km8 -

6/4 – 4

@quilteryoyo boo on no AC
@Avidkeo sorry about the muscle
@Teresa502 what is with the Garmins lately, seems everyone is having a problem
@shanaber sorry the foot is hurting. When I’m working at the office I get up at 4:30 to be out the door to run and get to work. Now that I’m working home I get up at 5:45 to run. On the weekends in the summer I try to be out the door at by 7:30 or 8:00 in the winter I’m good anytime.
@katharmonic definitely!!! How can I only have gone 2 miles ha ha me!!!

@kgirlhart Glad you had a good run, once you got going. I hope your Garmin comes back soon. I miss mine when I take it off to take a shower and charge the battery.
@Teresa502 Way to gut it out! 7am dentist appointment? I'm surprised they open that early. I'm sure mine doesn't. Hope your Garmin comes soon.
@mbaker566 I know what you mean. I am a mosquito magnet too.

I think I mentioned early when I reviewed the Aftershokz Trekz headphones that the customer service was awesome. Since I had a year left on my warranty (which continues from the original sale date when replaced) I decided to go ahead and submit a new warranty claim and see what they said. I did that this morning and got an email already, less than 3 hours later, that they are sending me a new pair. WOW!
I searched around on the web to see if others were reporting the break like mine as a problem and didn't see it anywhere at all. I suspect even if it is happening to others, the customer service is so great no one is making an issue about it.7 -
@shanaber That's fantastic. I still haven't ordered headphones. With that review, I'll probably purchase the Trekz.2

Today was a very active one for me. First, I spent almost 2 hours mowing and edging the lawn. While I cooled, I took Tippy for a walk/stroll in the neighbor's pasture field. Since I was already hot and sweaty, I decided to go ahead and do my scheduled run. I did give myself permission to call it if I needed to. It was 82°F with a feels like of 85° when I started out. I did laps on the driveway, which is almost all shade that time of day, fortunately - 1pm.
Today's plan called for short intervals. The only modification I wound up making was that I only did an easy warm up run for 5 minutes instead of 10. I figured I was already warm enough. I did 5 min easy pace, then 8 x (1 min hard effort/2 minutes easy effort), and finished with an easy run to make 2.5 miles. I then walked 0.5 miles as an additional cool down. My fastest pace was 8:03. Probably not for very long, but I did feel like my "hard" effort minutes were pretty fast. Just looked at Garmin Connect and it looks like my hard effort was somewhere between 9:15 and 10 min/mile. That is pretty good, considering the heat, humidity, hills I had to run up, and the fact that I had already mowed.

@quilteryoyo great running in the heat!
@shanaber good news on the trekz. I’ve been eyeing them as well...really need to get to Fleet Feet, lol!
On getting up early - only to run or to catch a flight - though I try very hard to not book early morning flights. I’m not a morning person so get it up early to run is huge for me. Before working from home, and because of my son’s school (he had to be up at 6 to catch bus by 6:40), I was up too. I’d have coffee and get dressed and head out around 7:30 or so.
Now, since I’m working at home I’ve been heading out at 8-9. But that will now change since the heat is here. So probably back to 7-8 maybe or earlier. Or the dreadmill! Just so I can sleep haha.
Hot run today. Did speed work. 1 mile warme up, and then 1 min speed / walk intervals for about 2 miles, then easy run and walk back to total 5 ish miles. Was glad for the walk breaks.
Rest day or cross train tomorrow..it’s going to be hot and humid tfoemthe next few days so no real good day for my long run. Will just have to gut it out.
Oh and I’m a magnet for mosquitoes too.3 -
I wish I was an early morning person. I always like it when I get the run done early and have the rest of the day, but it is not easy for me to get up and get moving. I'm definitely not a before work runner on any kind of regular basis. I run earlier on the weekends usually than on weekdays because that's when running groups meet up (but it's well known that I will complain about it). I'm not really a night owl either, mid-morning to mid-afternoon is my preference, ideally.@katharmonic - This video made me think of you with all your Spartan races Love the trail race meme, so funny. It is pretty much my thought process in road races too (without the snakes!).
@shanaber LOL, I love this hedgehog! I had seen a different video of her doing a previous obstacle course and was so amazed this little hog would do the course! Such determination. I feel like I could learn something from her. I also like how he says in this video to do your research before going out and getting your own hedgehog and they aren't for everyone, because I'm sure people (like me) are tempted to get their own little warrior.

I'm continuing to just kind of slog it out this week. I worked most of the day - I've been officially allowed back to work as part of our phase 1 of return to campus - and had planned to run with a friend late afternoon. She had to cancel so I was on my own. This is where I really should have done a morning run because my motivation was zero and it was hot and humid. I got it done but it wasn't pretty. My legs just feel kind of wrecked. A massage would do wonders I think.6 -
Brutal out there this evening! But I got five more miles in! I’m at 7 miles out of 40. Hope you all have a great Friday!6

I'm only up 4.5 miles so far.
It's just too damned hot, and I'm not about to get up at 4 am in order to beat the sunlight and run outside, then hit the gym, before my shift at 6 am. I work 12 hour shifts...so unfortunately I need to block my running and lifting together or one of them won't happen. Because....sleep and down time is important, too.
So I've been running on the treadmill in the A/C at the gym after work. I hate the treadmill so much. I know I have more in me but I get so bored that I don't care.4 -
@quilteryoyo - my dentist just started these 7 am appointments at the first of the year and I think he only does it 2 days a week. It works perfectly for me because I don't have to miss too much work by going early.
No run for me today. Rest day from running but I did a stretch video and an arm workout this morning.1 -
02/06 9km
04/06 7km
Total 16km of 75km for June
I'm back at it! I'm so happy with this! I did have a race on 14th June, which has obviously been postponed to November, but I've plotted out a 10K around the Thames and I'm aiming to get out early on the 14th and run then. My pace will be dire (I need race conditions to pull off a decent time), but at least I'll know that I would've got to the start (and finish) line.
After the race, I'm debating with myself as to running a short distance (say 2-3 miles) every day or carrying on going out for longer runs (4-7 miles) every other day. My goal is to run a sub-60 10K this year, and given my pace on the 2nd, I would say I would be on track for 63 min if I were to run a race on the 14th. I'm not quite sure which strategy is likely to lower my overall times.
The whole Running Day passed me by completely, so didn't manage to participate. May be next year.
Goals for the year:
1. Get back down to a decent running weight (currently set at 160lb)
2. Run a sub-60 minute 10K
3. Run a race this year, hopefully.
Current races planned:
14/06 Lincoln 10K - Postponed. Running for fun instead
17/10 Autumn Richmond Riverside Run (10K)
01/11 Lincoln 10K - new date. Here's hoping!5 -
Today I'm really grateful to have running to be a bit of normalcy and stress relief in what has turned out to be a really weird and disorienting few months. Since March, life has felt so topsy-turvy. The few hours a week I spent running mean more to me now than they ever have.
6/1: 1.75m
6/2: 5.5m
6/3: 6m
6/4: 5m
6/5: 2m7 -
Snagged a 5K last night. At the gym. On a treadmill.
My thinking was that since the beginning of the pandemic and everything got cancelled, I just signed up for all these virtual races and went way too fast and way too hard on already getting-injured legs. I thought that since the treadmill is measured and a soft terrain, I'd be able to really see where I am at.
Well. It was horrible. It felt like my legs just wouldn't move right. Like they were being stabbed. So I'm thinking it's my left IT Band now and probably severely strained or super tight muscles. I got the miles in and did some strength training (it was so nice to get to use machines again) but it was a good lesson in where I really am and what i need to work on. Really want to run tomorrow but after last night's debacle, I don't know if I even physically can. Thursday, barefoot running with my son on the sidewalk and then last night hobbling on the treadmill ... I brought my massage gun and resistance bands to work in case I get any downtime (I am working eleven hours today, so I'm hoping for maybe a few, few minute increments) I can try to help myself a little bit.
Also - without getting too political - the protest signs I made - they made it to my very racist hometown. A friend of mine came Wednesday and picked them up. They made the news. They are making their rounds to several protests there. He told a little girl, "My friend Mandy says this is YOUR movement and she loves you and she is with you." The little girl told him to tell me she loves me too. I hope to stay anonymous, but I guess it just melts my heart completely and the lesson is that you DO have a voice. And it reaches farther than you think. Just use what you HAVE. Do what you CAN. It's probably more than you think it is.7 -
I managed to get in another 3.6 km this morning! I wasn't sure if I would as it was raining cats and dogs when I woke up, but going back to bed paid off for once as the rain stopped and it was still overcast an hour later, which made for a wonderfully cool run. Usually I have to get up pretty early as it's 28 C / 80 F and 75% humidity by 7am here, but it seems the rainy season has finally started and it's been pretty overcast the last few mornings, which I'm loving. I'm not sure how I feel about the prospect of running in the rain though. I only started running a couple months ago, and we haven't seen any real rain since.
3 -

@Lexigraph I don't have any knowledgeable advice on the shoulder. If it's a recent thing, I'd be inclined to really rest it and let it heal rather than trying to target it right now.2
