    I love everything bagel with herbs and garlic cheese. Also sun-dried tomato bagel.

    I cautiously went to the bagel shop yesterday. I got four bagels for my neighbors who needed them. For myself, I got their version of lox which is cream cheese, lox, tomato, red onion, green onion, and capers. I also got a bagel to go, and couldn't stop myself from a bag of assorted day-old bagels for later. I am pleased I didn't eat them ALL, but I got close.

    Bonus of bringing it home is a proper plate instead of a wax paper square in a plastic basket.

    Neighbors were very glad to get a paper sack full of fresh bagels. G. went out early yesterday to the grocery. When she got home, S. asked if she got bread -- she didn't. So they were even better than they would have been, and they would have been good anyway.

    After that, S. and I took boats (him in a sit-on-top kayak and me in a whitewater canoe) about a third mile to the boat ramp and paddled up the East channel to the old gravel pond and back. There were a few new obstacles, but we were able to make it all the way up and back. The fish didn't bother us ONE BIT. Maybe I'll take a tiny kayak out today, but first I have two more bagels to eat.

    Neither~ The average donut exceeds 300 calories and that's just your casual chocolate store bought. I've got no idea how many the ones with fillings got... I'd imagine it would approach the 500s.

    Bagels~ Are healthier but not by much. A single bagel offers a whopping 245 calories. Note that's just a plain bagel with nothing on it. A tablespoon of cream cheese nets you another hundred for little nutritional value. I would rather have a slice of toast with a serving of peanut butter. About the same amount of calories but more balanced macros.

    To compare my average protein drink with 2% milk taste better, offers 100x more nutritional value and sits around 200 calories. Throw a banana in their and I got me a nice little snack. 👍

    @JoeyTheWanderer - neither your milk drink or your peanut butter sandwich satisfy the guidelines of the question. Neither has a hole in the middle. The question was bagel or doughnut. It wasn't bagel, doughnut, or some other option with a better nutritional profile.

    I braved the wild world and got myself a bagel with lox. Of course they also put TOO MUCH cream cheese on the thing, and also tomatoes, onions, and capers. Totally delicious. Low calorie? Hell no; over 500 actually, and lots of sodium. But it fit in my allowance. At 22 grams of protein, that's close to ideal (from what I read, your body can't necessarily metabolize more than about 20 grams at a time). Pretty good for a treat.

    Since it was a Sunday treat, and since we could all use a little tread these days, I served it with a glass of Oregon Pinot Noir. I called that a good lunch, so even more than just a treat.

    I don't think a doughnut can offer all that. I can't keep peanut butter in the house or I'll binge on it. A weekly bagel is just perfect.

    I can't choose on this one, I love them both. A pumpernickel bagel with cream cheese and lox is so delicious. And a doughnut will definitely hit my craving for a sweet treat.

    I wore a different hat and a face mask. They didn't recognize me at first. One of the people didn't recognize me at all until I spoke to him and he recognized my voice.

    Yes, and....

    It was delicious. I had lox last week, and I was thinking I might do pastrami this week. I missed a week or two before that. Last week I saw they had smoked albacore. It comes from someone who has a booth at the farmers' market that is in the blocks right in front of the bagel shop. But last week I had my heart set on getting lox. It was great. This week I was going to flip a coin but just decided to go for the albacore. I think I would have been happier with lox again because.... lox! Of course it's a little more expensive. The albacore is the same price as pastrami.

    It was almost half my daily calories in one fantastic small plate. I will probably do it again next week. A couple doughnuts wouldn't have been nearly as good. Not even apple cider doughnuts.

    For some reason, it just came to mind that years back, a bagel place here made something they called a "fragel". It was a bagel - I think maybe cinnamon raisin? - but deep-fried on the spot and immediately rolled in cinnamon sugar, served warm. They had really nice, chewy bagels, too, as the basis - not the bread-y soft things that are the standard around here now (so meh).

    I'm not mostly a big fan of sweet baked goods, and not a donut fan at all, but I remember the fragels fondly, and would try one again, if offered.

    I agree, Panera doesn’t have the best bagels. I always get an orange scone there. Brueggers is open if you have them in OK.

    I feel for anyone who lives in a bagel desert. I kind of did for a couple decades. Yeah, there was Noah's, Bagel Sphere, and New York Bagels, but no REAL bagels. Then my favorite shop reopened after twenty years. Yay!

    I think I'm making up for lost time.

    I went out looking for bagels this morning. I drove past Best Donuts, so stopped and got the best donut in OKC since I was there. It was good. It will probably hold me for another 2-3 years. Found Old School Bagels. No lox, no capers, just bagel sandwiches with sausage and egg, etc. no thanks. I got a dozen bagels to go. I took them out to the car and opened the bag.
    Hmmm. Looks like Panera. Took a bite. Good bagel! For OKlahoma. I recommend them. Now to find some salmon.

    Took the bicycle downtown to pick up accumulated mail and make a weekly stop at Yonder Bagel Shoppe. Riding a bike is the best kinetic way to get there.

    I locked the bike to itself and went in. I told them I knew I wanted a poppy seed bagel, but couldn't decide if I wanted lox or pastrami, and to surprise me. They fellow that was helping me almost told me what HE likes best. I like 'em both. Anyway, he stopped short of telling me and told me he'd surprise me. He picked a nice looking poppy seed bagel over to the prep counter, sliced the bagel in half, and then stopped, looked up and said he could put lox on one half and pastrami on the other half.

    Brilliant! Indecision for the WIN!

    And throw in a Firestick for good measure (bagel dough from a jalapeno bagel, but rolled into a stick shape without a hole, rolled in cheddar, and baked). Bring it all home, mix up a Bloody, and...

    How can this even be a discussion.. lol.. Doughnuts win my vote every time! When that “HOT” sign is on @ Krispy Kreme; totally lures me in every time (thankfully I don’t live near one).

    I do love bagels as well; a little cream cheese sprinkled with “Everything but the Bagel” seasoning. Admittedly; I’ve never bought a fresh one from a bagel shop, maybe that’s why they come in second?!

    Who can resist hot fried sugar dough?😃 Actually my favorite donut shop is a local bakery near me; they make the most amazing yeast donuts that I’ve ever had!

    To my amusement, I heard a thing on NPR the other day suggesting that New York City bagels are better because of something about the water. :lol: (It was a total aside, and pretty much intended as a joke, but in context of a larger story about the effects of local microflora/microfauna and local water mineral-content on foods' flavor/structure and such - I think it was on Science Friday, but I don't recall for certain.)

    Many transplanted New Yorker business owners actually have NYC water shipped to them to use in their bagels or pizza dough. Most NYers will tell you it's the water.

    I mentioned early in this thread that I found out in my fifties that I was Celiac and miss donuts. Well, leave it to the Italians (pizza!), but they have an Italian Gluten free flour called Caputo that I have been buying from Amazon. Oh, it's not cheap (like 10 bucks a small bag) but it tastes just like real flour and rises just like real flour. So amazing. I've already made pizza, Belgium Waffles (with real Belgium Beet Sugar), and soft pretzels. So much better than Udi's nasty cracker crust. Tasted like a real NY Style pizza. I'm also making a small Chicago pan style pizza soon.

    Next up, a Crispy Creme like, cream filled donut with some chocolate icing. Good thing this flour is expensive!

    That depends - which is better quality?

    Is rather have a really good donut than a really good bagel anyday. But I'd rather have a really good bagel then a mediocre donut. Honestly, I'd rather have a mediocre bagel than a mediocre donut. And if it's a lousy donut or bagel, then I don't want either.
