Been off for awhile. Have had some bad news recently - my cousin who is 48 is in ICU on a ventilator, unconscious.
He has lymphoma, and though he had seemed to be better a few months ago after his last chemo, it came back and has now spread to other organs. It is just so sad. And I cannot go to Toronto without 14 day quarantine because of COVID-19. They are not giving him much more time.
I have been continuing my running - trying to still get about 20-25 miles a week, and spinning.
Hugs and likes to everyone and Happy Anniversary too everyone "celebrating!"13 -
@rheddmobile - I'm sorry you couldn't have a fun celebration out for your anniversary. We had that same feeling on ours in July. We just BBQ'd and hung out at home. Hoping next year will be much better for all of us and our various celebrations!
I am surprised you haven't heard from your eRace Racism partner. I texted mine on Friday evening and she got right back to me. She is an ob/gyn who lives in NC. A bit younger than me but has an adult son who lives in Los Angeles (asked me if I could just runner and check up on him for her 😁). I think @quilteryoyo asked how they paired us up (maybe on my newsfeed?). I think they take people who wanted to do the same distance (200 mile for my team) and then paired by age and different backgrounds. I doubt there were too many my age requesting for the 200 mile challenge so they got as close to maybe group as possible? Just a guess on my part.
@RunsOnEspresso - Love Shadow! She looks very happy with your medal even if she couldn't eat it!
@ABabilonia - your pup is adorable! Maybe he needs an bigger buddy to be his partner in crime who could also be your running buddy 😁
@ContraryMaryMary - your run sounds wonderful and congratulations on the PB!
@marisap2010 - hope you feel better and your test is negative! They used to give me a medication with caffeine to help my migraines. Would having some caffeine possibly help?
Yesterday I surprised myself and got up and out by 6:30am, motivated to get my 1st run in for the eRace Racism challenge. I guess having a partner you don't want to let down helps! It was already getting hot with way more humidity than we are used to here. Walked the first .5 mile then ran to the trail. By about 2.5 miles out I felt terrible with nothing left and my legs were so tired. Sat down and had a talk with myself... I could just give up call my husband and have him come and get me or try something else. So I pulled up my interval timer and set out to do 90sec run 30 sec walk to finish the run home. Looking at my HR I am sure it was at least part of the issue again. After the initial run period it just wasn't keeping up. It was jumping up to 130 occasionally but then would drop off again eventually settling around 100 and staying there until I was almost home where it jumped to 150. I am still hopeful the PM and my body will adjust to each other but September can't come soon enough to see the doctor and find out what is going on.
We have record setting heat on tap for at least the next week so I am planning to set the alarm and be up and out early to run.

Happy Anniversary @kgirlhart ! Hoping you enjoy your day, even though it will be different.
@ContraryMaryMary Glad you had such an enjoyable run and congrats on the PB for 10 miles! Sorry about being back in lock down, but hopefully it will be back under control soon.
@ABabilonia Your puppy is really cute!
@marisap2010 Hope you get the headaches under control and that your test comes back negative.
@hamsterwheel6 Hugs to you. So sorry to hear about your cousin. Cancer is a horrible thing and CoVid makes it harder on the family since you can't be there with them.
@shanaber Glad you were able to get your run in. Sorry the PM is still causing you issues. Can you call them and let them know what it is doing? Maybe that way they will be ready with a fix when you have your next appointment. I can see how having a lower HR than it would normally be would make it hard to run.0 -
I got up early this morning so I could get my long run in before virtual church. Got out of the house at 7:05. It was 66°F and 100% humidity. The temperature wasn't bad, but oh that humidity!
I had decided yesterday, since I am doing more of my long runs on Sunday's, to make a new play list with hymns. Well, they were all way to slow. Then, I stumbled upon some Southern Gospel Quartet music. Don't know why I hadn't thought of that before. I was raised on that kind of music and really like it....and it's really peppy. It made my 8 mile run a lot more enjoyable.
Speaking of the run, I did okay for the first 4 miles - keeping my pace right at 13:20 min/mile. Mile 5 was a little slower and then I flagged down @Teresa502 's struggle bus that she was driving yesterday, and jumped on. Miles 6 and 7 were just hard. I wanted to quit, but wouldn't let myself. I did take more walk breaks so I could keep going. The splits were 14:06 and 14:38. I made a longer pit stop after mile 7 to call my mom and dad. They knew I was out running, but I had hoped to be done by 9. When I wasn't, I was afraid they would worry about me, so I called them while walking around so I wouldn't cramp up. Because of the break, I was hoping mile 8 would be a lot better. Nope. Well, it was a little better and I did fartleks to try to make it go faster. I kept telling myself that it was just 3 laps, just 2 more laps, this is the last lap. You've got this! I was able to muster enough to pick up the pace significantly for the last tenth of a mile - best pace being 9:35 min/mile. So, overall I was pleased with how I did in those conditions.
I achieved a milestone today that I could have done without. TMI in the spoiler.I normally go to the bathroom before I head out to run. I didn't feel the need today, so just went on out. Around mile 3, I felt a little bit of a need, but it went away, so I thought nothing else of it. When I stopped to call mom and dad, I sat down on my lawn chair to get something out of my shoe. When I stood up, I noticed something brown on the chair, but thought nothing of it, just wondered what it was. I finished up the run and cool down walk and decided to try to use the bathroom before I took a shower. When I pulled my running skirt down, there was some brown liquid and I was really wondering "What in the world?" Imagine my surprise when I pulled down the underwear and it was full of poop. Apparently, I had my first bout of runners diarrhea and didn't even feel it. I guess I am a true long distance runner now. Geeze. So gross!
and 9/20 walking.

6 miles plus a little walking. 90F when I got there. At least there was a little breeze and some shade.4
-
@shanaber Definitely, my next pup will probably be a Labrador. Your dog looks super cute 🤗
@quilteryoyo Thanks!2 -
So I realize not all of you have been doing this running thing as long as I have. So today let me give you a little advice... if you set out for a 10 mile run in 85 degree weather... MAKE SURE THE STRAW IS CONNECTED TO YOUR WATER BLADDER. Otherwise, you will spend the whole run trying to figure out how you ran out of water so fast...4

marisap2010 wrote: »Ugh, I’ve had continued headaches and fatigue for several days, so I went to the doctor. I had really bad migraines when I was younger, and while these aren’t quite to that level, I have felt pretty awful. Their solution was to take Tylenol and drink plenty of water (well,duh, that’s what I’ve been doing) and to give me a COVID test since we’d had positive cases at work and since these are possible symptoms. Now, I can’t go to work until the results come back, which is stressing me and making my head hurt worse because things are crazy at work, and I don’t exactly have confidence in some of my staff at the moment.
So, no running right now until I get these headaches under control.
Yuck! Hope they get to the bottom of it soon!1 -

I ran 10 miles this morning. It was a tough run. When I left the house at 5:54 am it was 78°F with a dew point of 63° and 60% humidity. But it felt more humid than that. The first couple of miles were a bit of a struggle. Then I kind of got into the zone but by the last couple of miles I was ready to be done. It wasn't a bad run, but I am over the heat. I guess it wasn't 105° like it is now, but it was still not very pleasant. I did see a couple of bunnies though and a bumblebee. And I was able to run through a water sprinkler.
My dad seems to be doing better. I got to face time with him a little while ago. He is still a little drowsy, but all things considered he is doing well.
@marisap2010 I hope you get relief from the headaches soon and that you get negative results from your Covid test.
@hamsterwheel6 I'm so sorry about your cousin. Cancer sucks and Covid just seems to make times like that even harder.
@quilteryoyo You are definitely a hard core runner now. 😲

SUNDAY UPDATE - Pastor Vincent vs Boston!
For those new/or with short memories I recently hired a coach to help me run faster - with the original goal of a BQ in 2021 (thanks to all the mess around COVID-19 and etc, this will probably be delayed but still a future goal). It is probably an unrealistic goal, but I am not getting any younger, so going for it. Several people asked to be updated on what the coach has in for me so I post each week what the coach's plan was, and what I actually did.
So here we go:
DAY :::: PLAN :::: ACTUAL
Monday :::: 12x30s intervals :::: Worked Late
Tuesday :::: Rest Day ::::: 8 miles
Wednesday :::: 6x400 meter intervals :::: 8 miles
Thursday :::: 10 miles :::: Work late
Friday :::: Rest Day ::::: 11 miles
Saturday ::::: 12 miles :::: 6x400m + enough miles to make to 12
Sunday ::::: 6 miles ::::: 10 miles
Total Miles: 51 running out of 37 planned
This was not a stellar week for hitting the plan. Lots of things were against me. I only got one of the two speed workouts in and even that one I messed up because I forgot to start my watch for it. Today's run was a mess too. I started off behind the eight ball already with lack of sleep, and really had not drunk enough today... then I get out there and I am trying and trying to drink from my water bladder and get nothing. I could not figure out why. Eventually, when I completed the 10, I stopped and checked my bladder. Seems I did not connect the straw to the water bladder. 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️ Ah well. There is always next week...5 -
@hamsterwheel6 I’m so sorry about your cousin.
@shanaber I heard from my person later the same day - I only signed up at the last possible minute, and she runs in the evenings, so my guess is she just hadn’t gotten to it. We have 12.6 miles out of 50 already, we may be upgrading to the 100 if this keeps up!
@quilteryoyo Now I want to run to “Run On” aka “God’s gonna cut ‘em down,” by the Golden Gate Quartet. I go through music phases and I haven’t listened to Southern Gospel Quartet music in a while, thanks for turning me back onto it!2 -
Hugs to @marisap2010 and @hamsterwheel6
@quilteryoyo - we are going to ditch that struggle bus this Fall and be so strong for it! Sorry about your little accident!
Since I short changed my plan by a mile yesterday I headed to our local park and ran a little over 5 miles on the Trail early this morning. I saw a couple that I knew who were walking but other than that only a groundhog, rabbits and deer were around. I rotate from WFH back to the office this week. Ugh!3 -
@quilteryoyo You are definitely a hard core runner now. 😲
HA! Yep... has happened to most of us I think... the rest it will happen to if they keep at it.

@kgirlhart Way to hang in there and get your 10 miles. This humidity is zapping everyone's energy, I think. Glad your dad is doing better and you were able to face time with him.
@Teresa502 Yes....we WILL ditch that struggle bus and be wowed by how strong we are. Glad you got a trail run in today. All I saw on my driveway were mushrooms growing along the side....and my doggie, of course. Didn't even see a squirrel, but did hear a turkey.1 -

@quilteryoyo, sorry you achieved that particular milestone, but as the saying goes, __it happens.

I'm back from my hiking day - another whirlwind trip to the Adirondacks where I completed my high peaks #14 and 15 (Tabletop and Phelps, which are the 19th and 32nd highest of the 46 high peaks). We left at 2 am to get to the trailhead by 6, which is necessary to find parking these days and we were lucky there were still spots in the lot. This hike was the shortest of the high peaks hikes this year, with almost exactly 9 total hours including stopping time at the summits, which we did spend some time enjoying. It was an absolutely gorgeous day and the hike was challenging and tiring, but I definitely rank them as easier than all but the first two I did last fall. The views from Phelps were particularly amazing. Some pics under spoilers below.
We got back home around 8:30 pm and of course I still had to run. So I went out for my minimum at least 15 minutes. It was not fun to have to go out and do it, but much better than the last two times when i did the run at 11:30 pm.8 -
Wow @katharmonic!! Just Wow! I am finding myself looking forward to your pictures and living vicariously through your hiking!0

I got 10K in this morning. It’s cooler now so I didn’t need to be out as early as I have been. But I need to stop this faffing about first thing in the morning because it takes me way too long to get from bed to running. Won’t be workable when school reopens and I’m back at work.
Happy Monday everyone x

@rheddmobile Glad I could remind you of the Southern Gospel Quartets. It really was enjoyable music to run by.
@katharmonic Another beautiful hike. And again amazed that you run after hiking for 9 hours.

@hamsterwheel6 Sorry to hear about your cousin. I know it is difficult to not be able to visit. *hugs*
@shanaber Yes, I’ve had some extra caffeine, plus I started taking magnesium. I had a deficiency in high school, which was part of the reason for my prior migraines.
@katharmonic Beautiful!1 -

ABabilonia wrote: »@katharmonic @Teresa502 @ABabilonia add me to the Ghost fan club 😆 I have been in Ghosts for over 4 years now. I have tried a multitude of others from other companies and other Brooks, but always come back to the Ghost. I hope the 13's don't change too much too. Have had 3 pairs of the 12's, and will go to the 13's when I can't find anymore 12's.
I absolutely love the Ghost 13. They don't feel much different to the 12. I was initially going to buy the 12, but unfortunately my width (4E) was out of stock. I was ready to maybe try New Balance or Asics Gel Kayano when I saw the Ghost 13☺️. Definitely my favorite shoe.
@RunsOnEspresso Your dog is so super cute. I was thinking about buying a dog, so he/she could be my running partner, but due to unusual circumstances I ended up with this little guy. He may not be my running partner, but he is definitely cute 🤭
don't give up hope. i see minpins, schipperkes, pomeranians, dachshunds at my canicross races. i've had corgi and border terrier fosters who loved to run. plus it's fun to see their tiny feet go1 -
I used to write every weekend before I ran. Now, I just write when I can. I haven't even added all my photos to FB yet for you all to see! My stories are more fun because they have music, so if you want to add me to insta or FB, you'll be able to see them with the soundtrack of my life. FB is my name - Mandy Camara. Insta is mandelion28.
Sounds like all of you have been really crushing it in the heat - @rheddmobile I love that race you are doing! @RunsOnEspresso Congrats on your medal! @katharmonic I LOVE YOUR PHOTOS OMGOSH!
@marisap2010 I hope you feel better soon!
So this weekend.... Lord. I didn't do the 31K on Friday because I worked all day and had to drive the kids to meet their dad and didn't get home til after 8:30pm. I didn't want to run 19.76 miles starting at 9pm, though it would have been a great time to do it in terms of weather. But I had already been running all week.
So Saturday, I woke up - I had strange dreams the night before and really missed my mom when I woke. Eventually, I got all prepped, got out the door. It. Was. So. Hot. 90 something degrees with a bunch of humidity and "Feels like 103." I ran. All. over. the. place. I got to use my new water bottle with the filter too! I got some encouraging messages from running community friends on FB, a call from my brother, texts from Nick and Sophie... It was SUCH a long day. I stopped at my car to charge my watch, phone, headphones, use more bug spray, get some water and calories, etc. - Two times. I'm not sure this was enough times. I finished 32.12 miles in 07:47:38! Then did the remaining 19.76 yesterday! Yesterday was also incredibly hot, but not nearly as bad as Saturday. I think it may be time - or near time - for new shoes. I may need to replace the oldest pair because I think I bought them in February, but I have also been rotating them, so I have no idea how many miles they actually have. I've run A LOT of miles since February. I got my 1100 mile badge this weekend! I pledged 1200 for the RTY challenge! There is a lot to say about the running, except at the same time, I feel like there's not much more to say other than I finished. I think I have injured or possibly broken my right big toe, but the pain really isn't that bad. Unless I'm walking or running... But even then, it felt pretty bad Saturday and I still finished that run + yesterday's. Actually all my toes hurt. They feel swollen and tired.
I ended the week with 79.05 miles (including walking miles)! I finished the Vertigo 119K in 17:13:14!!!! I finished 19th overall and sixth in gender! I don't know what my age group placement is, but I do not care. I am very, very, very pleased with myself.
I bawled when I finished the Ultra on Saturday - There were so many times I thought I'd have to call it. So. Many. Times. I have never wanted to be done with something so badly in my life. The final miles - it was dark outside - I had run from the trail to my neighborhood because the trail is not lit and my neighborhood is. It was nearly 10pm when I finally quit running loops and laps in my area. It was quiet and so peaceful, but my whole body was on overdrive. It was so surreal to know that everyone around me was sleeping and I was on the sidewalk pushing myself as hard as I could. my final mile I finished in under 13 minutes. Everything hurt. I thought I'd never ever finish. But there was no freaking way I was stopping until it was done. And it DID get done! And I cried like a baby and missed my mom and my giant malamute came and sat with me on the kitchen floor. I think I will never forget it.
Then yesterday, I just thought. Even if I have to walk the whole stupid 19.76 miles, I am going to finish this. I swore to myself I'd stay off the trail because it's so much more challenging and I wanted an easy day. But of course. I passed by an area that I hadn't really explored yet, so ran through there and it was so beautiful. Leaves are starting to fall here and there was a breeze and the music I was listening to was perfect for the moment. Finished yesterday with an average 15 minute something seconds pace. Happy with that. Also surprised by it.
The next challenge starts one week from today. I am an idiot because I THOUGHT it was TWO WEEKS from today. I only have one week to recover and be ready and rested and strengthened. The next one is 113K - shorter distances through the week but 33.55 miles (54K) for the ultra.
So including next week, assuming I am able to complete the whole thing, I will have run 3 marathons and 3 ultras in something like a month and a half.
Considering that this actually goes against a lot of what I've read about rest and recovery and what's a healthy amount of running etc.... I'm going to have to REALLY FOCUS this week on nutrition, rest, strength training, PT... and REST. Thoughts or advice?8 -
