As predicted, my coach upped the intensity on my run this week. It wasn't quite what I expected: 30 minutes aerobic pace, 45 minutes tempo (about marathon pace, ideally), then another 30 at aerobic. I'd had a great week running - fast was easy - and had done lots of yoga, pilates and gardening (squats!) and found today quite hard work - intensity level, or rate of perceived exertion, was good, but my pace was at least 10 seconds slower per kilometre than I wanted.
I think I've pretty much worn myself out. In fact, after lunch, when the rain returned, I returned to bed for a lovely long snooze.
Rest day tomorrow. Yay!
How are you holding up? Can I say from the rest of the kiwis here (lol) thanks for taking one for the team! Hope you can be level 2 tomorrow.0 -

I’m ok. My hubby is going a bit stir crazy. Fingers tightly crossed for tomorrow’s announcement but I’m not too hopeful. Thanks!2 -

After last weeks 15 mile struggle fest I was nervous about today’s scheduled 17 miles but I felt pretty good in comparison. I felt like I could actually run longer instead of wanting to curl up in the fetal position and die!
It sounds like your training is working!
So, I don’t ordinarily use Strava, I record runs on my phone and mapmyrun is just more convenient on a phone. But I needed Strava for my challenge. And I found out that the “fly by” feature will show you the people who passed you on a run if they are using Strava as well. Last time I ran on my access road, it was one person, and she wasn’t really on the same road, she was on a nearby street which approaches close to it. Yesterday it was... oh look a zillion bicyclists! With clickable links. So I can see exactly who these non-social-distancing jerks were.
I found out that what I saw yesterday while running was the “Smoothie Cruise Group Ride” And they had a record attendance of 53 people. So, not quite 100, which is what it felt like, but still an illegal number of people since you’re not supposed to exceed 50. There are Facebook photos of the start which show them socially distancing, so they were TOLD to by the group organizers, they just stopped when they actually started riding. Very tempting to post on their Facebook page and mention that they need not to ride five abreast on top of innocent people sharing the road with them. Or get some friggin masks. I don’t think I am going to, but if I come down with Covid in the next week you can bet I will.8 -

Cloudy and upper 60s F today, with an occasional breeze from the southeast. Squirrels are starting to eat the hickory nuts; the creepy crawlies in the fields and woods are just about deafening; and I hate it when sweat runs off my eyelids into my eyes.

@Teresa502 you are doing so well!!!!! SEVENTEEN MILES! You got this!
@Tramboman every time i get a glimpse of Atumn, I think of you. Leaves falling, the crunch of the leaves, squirrels staring at me, walnuts, the breeze, the smell of the heat in late summer on a trail with a bunch of yellow leaves on the ground .... yep, it’s so nice.
@rheddmobile I have often had the same cyclist issues. I feel... that they are just the worst. But also, I know they probably aren’t the worst kind of people in reality. Except. They might be.
@ContraryMaryMary that does sound intense! Good grief!
Yesterday’s track workout was a lot more than I expected it to be. I don’t know if it was the heat or allergies or the fact that I didn’t use my inhaler BEFORE running like I normally do, or it I just started too fast, but within the first 400m, I could not breathe. I felt like I was suffocating. My lungs were on fire! I walked back to my bag, used my inhaler (two puffs) and waited. Seemed okay, but it was a good reminder. I haven’t had that happen since last winter.
I now know what 800 meters is. Half a mile!
I did some drills that I saw this beautiful runner doing on Instagram, intervals with the MapMyRun app - but I screwed that up when i didn’t stop after the programmed 1.5 miles. And I don’t yet know how to change the distance. I was out there for three. It seemed easier on a track to notice my speed - when i was going too fast to maintain, when I was slow enough that I could sing a song, etc. I think it was good to switch up my routine as well as to do a shorter distance before the challenge starts tomorrow. I’ll definitely be back for more of that.
I did a pretty brutal lifting session after that and I am sore today, so I think it worked, lol. Rest day today - we are taking the dog swimming. so really.... active rest day today. 😂
On the eating disorder thing.... i can’t even believe how those athletes are alive! I kept thinking, “don’t they know they need nutrition to heal and make the machine work?!??” I feel awful for them, going through what they do and it’s all so short lived, it seems.
Kids start school tomorrow. Can not believe it. 🤮

Long run today and I felt really comfortable doing my 8 mile. Pace still fairly slow but better than it has been. Hopefully I’m getting fitter!

I had planned to get up early and start my run on the treadmill and then transition to outside once it got light enough. I woke up about 4:45 and heard it raining. Wasn't ready for that. I got up a little bit later than planned and didn't get started with exercising until 7:20. It was dreary, so I decided to just try the treadmill and see how it went.
I did run/walk intervals, which I find to be better for me on the longer runs. I ran/walked for 4/1 minutes at 5.0/3.9 mph. That works out to an average pace of 12:30. Not too bad for me. It actually felt pretty easy, except for a little bit of boredom. My legs felt good and my average HR was 146. The worst mile was number 6. I just wanted to be done and still had soooooo farrrrrrr to go.
All was going well until I hit 7.96 miles and the treadmill suddenly stopped and reset the time on the display to 0:00. Fortunately, it retained the distance, so I wouldn't have to guess at that. I have no idea what happened. I looked at my manual later to make sure that was no time cut off. It doesn't list one, if there is. I think it is on it's last leg anyway. For the last couple of months it has been showing a HR when I haven't touched the contacts. That has been irritating, but I've lived with it. If it keeps stopping at random times, I'll have to consider getting a new one.
I ran 9 miles and walked 1.
Also walked 13.25 out of 20.

I set my alarm for 6:00 so I could run before it got hot. My body was not in agreement, however, so I didn’t head out until about 9:00. 🤣 Fortunately, it was overcast and not too hot. 6.2 miles complete! Hoping to do some strength training tonight, perhaps after a nap.7

I ran 11.25 miles today and that got me to my August goal of 100 miles. It was a pretty good run. Both of my kids came this weekend. It was really nice since we hadn't all been together since my son went to Japan last year. He came home at the end of March, but because of Covid we didn't get to have any big family gatherings. This weekend was small, just us and not extended family. But it was the first time my daughter got to see her brother since he got back from Japan. It was nice, but it was also a stressful weekend. My dad had been moved to an inpatient rehab facility after breaking his hip and was doing well. But yesterday they said he had an upper GI bleed and moved him back to the hospital. They did an endoscopy today and everything looks good. I think they have to get a negative Covid test before they can send him back to rehab. And when the kids left CJ took his corgi, Ein, with him. I'm really going to miss that dog. I tried not to get too attached, but I have to admit we were pretty close. All in all it was a good weekend, but there were lots of emotional ups and downs.

@kgirlhart Glad your family got to get together. Sorry your dad had a set back. Hopefully he can get back to rehab soon. I would have gotten attached to the dog too. I had a stray for only a couple of days - maybe a week, before I got Tippy. When the owner was found, I bawled like a baby. I had already gotten attached. That's how I knew I was ready for a dog in my life again. I hadn't had one since I was in college.3

In case any of you work at a restaurant, a bit of advice... if someone says "no onions" and you say "is that because of an allergy" and they say "yes"... LEAVE THE ONIONS OFF THEIR BURGER.

SUNDAY UPDATE - Pastor Vincent vs Boston!
For those new/or with short memories I recently hired a coach to help me run faster - with the original goal of a BQ in 2021 (thanks to all the mess around COVID-19 and etc, this will probably be delayed but still a future goal). It is probably an unrealistic goal, but I am not getting any younger, so going for it. Several people asked to be updated on what the coach has in for me so I post each week what the coach's plan was, and what I actually did.
So here we go:
DAY :::: PLAN :::: ACTUAL
Monday :::: 6x Lactate threshold :::: 6x LT + 5 more miles
Tuesday :::: Rest Day ::::: 6x 400 meters + enoug to reach 10 miles
Wednesday :::: 6x 400 meters :::: Rest Day
Thursday :::: 10 miles :::: 10 miles
Friday :::: Rest Day ::::: 14 miles
Saturday ::::: 15 miles :::: Rest Day
Sunday ::::: 6 miles ::::: 10 miles
Total Miles: 55 running out of 39 planned
Probably my best week for hitting all the key work ours I am supposed to hit. It was a "cooler" week in that it was only in the 80s most of the week. High humidity though so that kicked my butt around a bit. This week though we found out my 10 miler race in November is canceled, so no more training to PR that race. Have a call planed with my coach this week to work out a new plan since right now my next race is not until May.
So not sure what I am in for next!9 -

I was going to do a trail run today, but I had the chance to go stand-up paddle boarding in the morning and didn't have time to do both. I have been wanting to go out with friends on the SUPs all summer so I chose that. Also because it was supposed to be 90 degrees out, being on, and in, the water sounded like a better option all around. It was fabulous. We stopped in the middle of the lake and swam around and the water was very cool and refreshing. That's the first swimming I did all summer too, which is kind of crazy. Of course I tracked it on my Garmin and we did about 3.7 miles.
After getting some lunch (starving!) I had to go to work for a while. Then I still had to run. It said 90 degrees on my car when I left work and that was not motivating me at all. I could see dark clouds in the direction of home so I wasn't sure what I would be in for if I headed out. I took a half-hearted attempt to find a trail that I've been wanting to try connects two other trails I know of (one being the "clown murder trail" I mentioned a couple of weeks ago). I think I found it but it also looked creepy and very under-used so I decided it was a bad idea and headed towards home and something less risky in case of a downpour. While I was driving there was a little bit of rain, barely enough to use my wipers, but like some miracle it had rained in my suburb and it had cooled off significantly! I stopped at the canal park and headed out to do at least 20 minutes, but then decided to do my usual 1.5 miles out. When I got to the turn-around point though I decided to loop it instead of heading back, which meant running along a fairly busy road. I haven't done it before because I didn't know how wide the shoulders were, but it turned out to be pretty good. It helped mix it up a little anyway.
I feel pretty refreshed from this weekend. Not as productive as I hoped but I did make a start on a critical project so at least that's something. Taking a big deep breath and trying to head into the official start of the semester tomorrow with calm intention. Namaste.

Thank you for coming to my TedTalk.
Sigh.
This is a big issue with so many people having "allergies".
It sadly causes restaurants to be a bit more lax, because most allergies aren't true allergies. Frustrating when someone has a genuine allergies.0 -
Bike today, 35 mins. A bit achey in the calt today but not bad.
Definitely going to be another month. Sigh.5 -

Bahaha hope this is the last one, but sadly I doubt it. Especially as they still don't know where it came from0 -
@katharmonic Sounds like a great weekend. Stand up paddle boarding with friends should always trump solo running.
@kgirlhart I agree. Don't know how @mbaker566 does it. I'd want to keep them all. That's why I'm not a foster parent too....have thought about it, but know I would have a really hard time having to let them go.

@kgirlhart and @quilteryoyo I would love to foster dogs too, and have volunteered with a rescue in the past doing transports and home checks. I did foster one dog for a couple of weeks but it was such a difficult experience with his health issues and trying to keep him and my (previous) dog apart that I was ready to send him on his way to the permanent foster. But I did still fall in love with him a little bit and wished I could have made it work. Stella is all I can handle right now (understatement, she's a lovable challenge) but someday I hope I can help out again.

4.25 miles this morning. Just a slow, hot, unenthusiastic plodding.

@quilteryoyo It's hard not to get attached. At least we still have our two dogs. And since it is my son's dog I am sure he'll bring him when he comes to visit and we will probably dog sit again sometime. But I don't know how @mbaker566 does it with all her fosters.
some of them, i am more than willing to give them up. others are super hard. but each dog i foster is another dog that doesn't get put down. so i cry, wait a few days, and there is usually another intake and i get another dog and it all starts over again.
this one is going to be super hard. i want her. she's a stray but so well behaved.5 -
Two runs
run 1 was a 5k with a group of people, sorta. about 20 people got together and ran the Ethan's Run Against Addiction virtual race. it was a team for a person i knew. my late husband's sponsor was there and a few other people i knew from my husband's time in recovery. i took speed demon. it was warm and humid and the air was still. speed demon took off hard and fast and we had to walk for about .5mi before we could run again. and that was the story for the other 2 miles as well. the loops took us past a pond so i let her cool off. the ducks were less than thrilled but she didn't care about them. it was nice to get together and do a "race." i feel so bad for the parents. parents aren't supposed to bury their child.
run 2 was 4.3mi that was definitely slow. there was rain in the forecast that kept getting pushed back. so i'd plan to go out and see there was thunderstorms predicted. and time would come for the rain and nothing.
eventually, i decided to risk it and it was hot and sticky. speed demon got awfully warm awfully quick so there was a LOT of walking. still a ton of mosquitoes, even though i had on deep woods bug spray. but it was beautiful and rejuvenating. lots of hills but not so horrible.
afterwards, we went to the lake so she could swim a bit. we made it just in time for sunset. she played with a couple of other dogs and sniffed other people. still a ton of mosquitoes, even though i had on deep woods bug spray.6 -
4 miles today. It was fairly nice (88 and low humidity). Air looks awful. It was a little hard to start after taking the last 2 days off because it's been so hot. I threatened to sell the guest room bed and buy a treadmill and make the guestroom into a gym. DH ask what I'd do woth the bike we just bought. Duh, put it in the gym!
