Less Alcohol - AUGUST 2020 - One Day at a Time

Thank you all for the words of encouragement. I think these past few months have been testing all of our limits, and it's good to hear how you all are coping. I like @Samand303 's suggestion of specific tea for destressing - I'll probably pick up a stress blend (not mint or chamomile, I go through a box of each a week) and something that feels more like a treat. I might even add sweetener to it - let's go a bit wild! Also debating trying my hand at knitting. I don't really want to make anything, I just want something to keep my brain busy. I suspect in 2 years I'll just have this tower of knitting in a corner somewhere...
Husband and I talked about the drink. I may have been a bit too upset about it. It felt like we started something in solidarity (at his suggestion!) and he went back on it. There's been too many times in the past where we start down the healthy lifestyle road together, he falls off after a week or two, and I'm left to trudge on for a while until my willpower wears out. But he hasn't slept well in a while, he was making mistakes all the time, and he was starting to feel like his exhaustion was dangerous. We've agreed to another AF week and to stock up on some sleep aids to try to wean him off the booze.
@Doxmum man, I can't believe you've been torturing yourself watching that circus. 67 days until election day...
@forestdweller1 is your family safe??
@shorepine enjoy your wine and campfire! I'm kind of relieved to hear that nice rose won't oxidize into undrinkable sadness5 -
yes, thank you @chocolate_owl , Louisiana house is missing some shingles and siding, but the many windows are unbroken, according to a first responder friend who quickly canvassed the neighborhood. And no casualties, thank goodness, although the hospital lost it's roof and many buildings in the tiny downtown are no more. Counting blessings as they occur .
The menagerie is breaking camp in Maine to trek back South to deal with insurance and FEMA and all that.
@Doxmum you are such a masochist !! I tape my favorite Late Night show to listen to the Trumpet 2nd hand...with sarcasm included. Over morning coffee.
It's LESS alcohol, y'all. Keep chill, and keep going for your personal goals.
Another no drinking day...c'mon ducks...line up !!6 -
Celebrated my son getting a new job after being laid off back in June due to the oil industry and pandemic. So proud of him and his abilities that put him at the top of the list of the 150 candidates the company considered.
1 bottle of wine for 4 people.
August 2020

Quick check in
Long fricken drive, then husband could not remember how to get to his friends house here in town...got us lost for 45 mins. I was gripping the steering wheel ready to rip it from the dash board. All I kept thinking about was my kombucha waiting for me in my cooler. Blueberry kombucha.
Thanks you guys, your the best.
August day 28 ~ 28 alcohol free
More tomorrow..........8 -
@forestdweller1 LOVE YOUR DUCKS!3

I am Dawn. 59 (for one more month), I live in SE BC
My goal has remained the same, one that I feel comfortable with: 16-20AF days each month.Saturday August 01 - Drinks, fancy fruity ones that I concocted.Wednesday August 26 - Drinks. The last before our mini challenge in solidarity with @MissMay
Sunday August 02 - AF - Didn't really want to be AF, but did.
Monday August 03 - AF - Too windy to go to a lake today (I float on a mat) so I did some stuff around the garden. It is still going to be 100 degrees for a couple of more days, I am going to try to only work in the mornings so that I can get to the lake while it is super hot and not windy. Motivation to not drink is how my belly swells up so big the day after having drinks. Planning on AF again tomorrow.
Tuesday August 04 - AF - Long stressful workday when I should have been at the lake, second to last really hot day. So badly wanted a few cocktails, but fought through it with my newfound "don't drink when you are stressed" tactic. Those cocktails won't be going anywhere, I will have a few on a happy day. Lake time Wednesday no matter what.
Wednesday August 05 - Drinks. Last hot day here, so went to the lake and had some yummy cocktails when I got home.
Thursday August 06 - AF - I will try to be AF tomorrow also to get 2 in a row.
Friday August 07 - AF - Might have drinks with a friend this weekend.
Saturday August 08 - Bunch of drinks with a girlfriend. I was making them, so put half of the alcohol in mine. We had a nice visit.
Sunday August 09 - AF - planning on racking up a few of those.
Monday August 10 - AF - This didn't post for some reason, probably human error : - )
Tuesday August 11 - AF - I really have myself convinced now to not numb myself with alcohol when stressed out. If I have a few drinks when I am happy I enjoy/savour them more. I will probably be making Mojitos again before the mint is finished. When it is almost done I make a giant vat of mint tea, strain it, then freeze it into containers to later put in the blender for a nice minty frozen iced tea drink (no alcohol).
Wednesday August 12 - AF - I have a long hard workday ahead tomorrow, so no drinks tonight.
Thursday August 13 - AF - Very long hard workday today, I really really wanted drinks, but hanging tough.
Friday August 14 - 2 wine and 1 cocktail, feeling woozy, out of the habit of the alcohol, but have a Mojito date with a gf for Sunday, one day to recuperate beforehand.
Saturday August 15 - AF - I didn't feel well all day today. A few weeks ago I had 3 ounces of wine and it was the same the next day. Wine just doesn't agree with me anymore. Even though I like the taste, it is definitely not worth basically missing the whole day after.
Sunday August 16 - AF - Following @MissMay 's sage words from page one and looking after my tomorrow feeling today. Postponed my Mojito get together for today with my friend, told her yesterday when I was feeling so yucky that I just couldn't.
Monday August 17 - AF - Another nice hot day here, a quick trip to a lake. I felt like having drinks, but was so thirsty I settled for another of those Club Sodas (otherwise i would have downed drinks too fast)
Tuesday August 18 - AF - Cucumber club soda in a fancy glass of course. It was great! I did manage to get away to a lake mid-day today for an hour and then went back to work. I have an awesome tan : - )
Wednesday August 19 - Drinks. Although I have resisted drinks on my stressed out days for around 2 months, today was just too much. So, I blew a drinks day alleviating stress. I stopped at a friend's place on the way home from work who offered me wine, I had water, since it is looking like wine makes me sick the next day. The first sip of alcohol when I got home really tasted good and relaxed me so much. I will try not to make a habit of it again. I should say that I won't make a habit of it again : - )
Thursday August 20 - AF - I almost opened the piccolo of Freixenet that has been in the fridge for months. One of these days I will. Time to shorten my post!
Friday August 21 - AF - Always happy to hit my 16 for the month.
Saturday August 22 - AF - Going to a different lake to float with a friend tomorrow, and want to feel good, so no drinks tonight. (I will get a photo) I am rearranging my schedule so that I can go to my usual 2 lakes on Monday and Tuesday (or maybe I will go somewhere else) when the wind will be low and the temperature nice. This could involve going to work super early, leaving at one point, and returning to work after the lake. Moving all of my jobs to clear those 2 days would also be an option. These nice lake days are running out now as we start to cool off a little. The rest of the week will be much cooler with high winds, not ideal for someone who floats along on the water. I want to feel good and experience these next few days without the possibility of not feeling well from drinking. Going to try not to have drinks before Tuesday night.
Sunday August 23 - Drinks after the lake. Excellent float. I didn't make it until waiting for Tuesday to have drinks.
Monday August 24 - AF - Went to a lake 25 minutes from my house. About halfway there I started to smell some smoke, but there was none at the lake that I went to. The water was very cold already, even though the sun was hot. Looked at the mini Prosecco in the fridge when I got home, but it can wait. I seriously put on 2 pounds the next day after drinks, so doing some damage control. I will look through today's photos and post some.
Tuesday August 25 - AF - planned drinks on Thursday. We aren't starting our solidarity with @MissMay challenge until Friday right?
Thursday August 27 - AF - Last float today before it gets cold. I really wanted a glass of champagne or a Daquiri when I came home, I had a really great day. But...solidarity challenge weekend for our girl @MissMay I'm sure that my waistline will thank me tomorrow when I don't wake up bloated from drinks.

@MissMay - the quarter finals were harder than I thought they would be for you (getting lost and all). Good job! And good warmup for tomorrow. Kind of sounds like DH used to be pretty high when he came and went from his friend's house. Otherwise he'd remember where it was if they were "good-enough" friends for DH to ask you to drive 5 hours to a birthday party. Anything over 4 and I'm looking at flight schedules. Or at least I used to BC (before Covid).
@forestdweller1 - I may have to switch to Late Night spin on the news. Good idea.
Game on tomorrow challenge-within-a-challenge colleagues! If MissMay can do it, we certainly can!7 -
I am with most people here about the stress busting: Exercise.
I do HIIT with weights a few times a week, and do Fitness Marshall (youtube) 7 days a week. Even if I only have time for 2 or 3 songs of around 3 minutes each, it makes me concentrate on the movements (focus), loosens and elongates my body, puts oxygen to my brain, and makes me feel good to have accomplished something for myself before starting a busy day.
Alcohol reduces my stress immediately, instant gratification, but is counter-productive to weight loss, so I drink less than I used to.6 -

AF yesterday and that's the plan for the weekend. Got a run in before the sunrise. Smile on my face....!5

Hey there mini-challengers! AF 2/3 for me How's it going @MissMay? I hope you're leaving the competition wondering, "Who was that mask woman? And she's sober too!" Home tomorrow.
So a t-shirt I bought arrived today.
Print: Dog w/ a dog-shirt on.
Logo: Work from home. Pants optional.

Checking in just before mid night Saturday night.
Second day of @docmum's mini challenge.
ANOTHER AF day and night. Even with all the many drink options thrown my way. The private bartender at the surprise party loved that I gave him free choice when making my mocktails. They were tastey and beautiful and no one knew, except he , husband and myself.
Headed home tomorrow.

@MissMay - A PRIVATE bartender for PERSONAL mocktails?? You scored!!! I want one too
@dawnbgethealthy - No worries. Sounds like fun. MissMay made it through!3 -
@MissMay - That is AF in style with creative surprise cocktails by a private bartender! Makes it more fun and interesting. I imagine you got a few new ideas to try at home too.
Another AF day for me Saturday as well.
Sorry about Friday night's lack of support on my side. When your 30 year old son invites you over to celebrate that he has a job and no longer concerned about how he is going to pay mortgage and support his wife (she is back in college again) through their getting pregnant ups & downs with special doctors (insurance coverage is again a blessing).
Wine is my downfall ... but amazing enough a WIN keeping it to just one glass from one bottle and not 3-5 glasses from 3 bottles!
Plans to stay AF tonight ... my sister is heading over. Usual is 3 bottles of wine for DH, my sister and myself. I already gave her the heads up ... no wine tonight ... so I won't have any surprises.

@MissMay , WAY TO GO!! Hanging in there....and the HOT month is almost over too. I should be AF today as long as I pick up some chocolate and stay away from the news

MADE IT! Phew. My three days away around heavy drinkers was kept high and dry. Even with the constant purchasing of alcohol my husband wanted me to consume. Nips, mini prosecco bottles and that darn coffee PBR were his attempts to lure me from my dry August. Relax, let your hair down, we are away from home he kept telling me.
NOPE did not get tangled in that web. Stayed AF
Oh BTW I think I can ask that private mocktail maker to be my cabana boy. 😆😉😄
End of month in two days. I will be putting up new link for September thread link.
AUGUST 30/ 30AF9 -
"Winner! Winner! Chicken Dinner!" You not only made it to the finals, you kicked bum there - w/ a little help from cabana boy. Every girl needs one You've got your AF August in the bag. We.Are.So.Proud. And what an inspiration to all of us. Personally, I cannot imagine doing AF work swimming upstream against DH. Now get a good night's sleep.
Looking fwd to SEP. I'm in.5 -
Good Monday Morning to you all. Here as promised is the link to the September's Less Alcohol thread.

My success this month was doing a dry August. With the much appreciated love and support of my fellow Less Alcohol posse.
My accountability is 943 days on MFP Less Alcohol
August 2020 was DRY.
Thank you all. See you on September 2020 thread8 -
Gonna round out August here. Today will be day #10 AF.
Sleep:
-I've slept through 8 of 9 nights instead of waking up periodically.
-I still wake up feeling exhausted, and two mornings I woke up feeling "hung over." I've been staying hydrated, so I don't really know what's going on. Hoping this improves.
Physical appearance:
-No change in skin or weight yet.
Emotional state:
-No days of bad depression or anxiety. The big test is the next week because TOM messes me up pretty bad.
-I'm bored. I'm really bored. I'm doing all the things I'd normally do, but especially on weekends there's no alcohol to distract from being stuck in semi-lockdown and unable to go to a museum or the mall or spend an hour getting dressed up before going out to dinner. Looking forward to September not being 100 degrees every day so I can do more things outside.
-I found "treat" tea that's helping with cravings of all kinds.
Summary: It's a start. September will be interesting.
Congratulations to everyone on exercising that discipline and meeting your August goals. Good luck in September10 -
Aug accountability ~ 31

Wednesday August 26 - Drinks. The last before our mini challenge in solidarity with @MissMay
Saturday August 29 - Drinks. I caved. Didn't make it through the dry weekend challenge, had colourful cocktails out at several patio places with a friend - something I just don't do normally.
Sunday August 30 - AF - Made 2 of the 3 days AF for our little challenge. Pleased with my amount of AF days this month. 1 more day to go, planning AF.
Monday August 31 - AF - Really glad to end the month with 23AF days.
Rolling total 23AF days out of 31 days4 -

Good for you!!
It takes me like 11 months to lose 11 pounds. Way to go.
Thank you.
Well these were pounds I regained not once but twice!! I let things get out of hand and put a stop to all my laziness and excuses in August. Now at my 15 pound loss I got to in 2019. I don't want to tackle any of those pounds again!3 -
Final tally for August... 14.5 AF / 31 46.8%... close but didn't quite hit my 50% goal.
I did loose 3 lbs of the 4 lbs (my orig goal), so kinda happy about that.
Bye Bye August - Moving onto Sep, no looking back!4
