@eleanorhawkins hahahahaha so one of my favorite songs is "Cringe," by Matt Maeson. I think you'll relate and enjoy it.
Agree on self defense and maybe getting picked on. That mentality is so funny to me. I used to worry about it and there have been a couple of instances when I've legitimately been concerned, but at the same time, I will deliver the fear of God. I know exactly what I will do. The two times I have been concerned, they wouldn't have been willing to waste their drugs on me, for one thing. Secondly, while I realize there are bad people everywhere, I try to make sure they are more afraid of me than I am of them. I may or may not have told an individual on a trick bike Saturday night that I am not the one, I will *kitten* gut you.
Finished my 46.99 shortly after that moment. I don't think I am identifiable because me while running looks very different than me dressed for work. I know you're not allowed to threaten people's lives, but you're ALSO not allowed to make people worry that you might try to take theirs. Street goes both ways. besides, I have made a promise and a commitment to always come home to my kids in one piece.
@Scott6255 I can't believe it either. I just keep thinking, "I can't believe I just did that."
Also I am really tired.
@hamsterwheel6 maybe while I am resting (yeah right) I will get some clutter cleared. The house definitely gets neglected for these long races. It's not trashed, but it needs vacuumed, dusted, etc. Bleh.3 -
@Camaramandy648 I'm surprised you only signed up for the 100. LOL
RE: Women attacked on run. Statistically, you are more likely to be attacked by someone you know than a stranger. Yes, it does happen but not as often as you'd think by watching the news. Most predators will target people that are unlikely to be missed. Runaways, sex workers, homeless. They are less likely to be reported missing.
I use Strava beacon so if anything happens my DH has access to my GPS/route. I'm more likely to get hit by a car than murdered while running. Yes, we need to be aware and take necessary precautions but saying not to run before daylight is dumb. I say wear a light, be prepared, let someone know where you are going and how long and be aware.
I always look right at everyone I pass. They know I've seen them. I acknowledge them. If they are looking for a victim most times they will keep going until they find someone not paying attention, fiddling with their phone etc. This is one thing every cop I've ever talked to has said to do when they find out I run alone (and anytime you are alone, like walking to your car at night. Get your keys out before you leave the building and don't play with your phone). And never answer the door unless you know the person and were expecting them LOL6 -
@RunsOnEspresso which 100? The Javelina? Oh I signed up for each loop! I can't remember what the total mileage is but I need to get 200 miles in each month for the rest of the year to get to my personal 2020. Our team already has theirs but I won't feel like I've really earned the medal unless I do 2020 myself. Which is actually stupid and maybe not even safe. I pledged 1200 I think.
Agree with everything on safety. Make sure they know you see them.1 -
I also agree. Was in the middle of a veeeery long post on the topic and my computer died. 2nd time in a month. So over this year.4

@Scott6255 Thank you. That is some wind!! Sounds like a typical Monday to me.
@quilteryoyo it has been something fun to get you to run other places
@hanlonsk changing your running form has to be hard, Skip was a heel striker, big Achilles issues and she worked hard to change it. When she gets lazy she still heel strikes.
@ContraryMaryMary that is a lot of steps but it looks amazing, even in the drizzle.
@kristinajeang nice looking trail – great picture
@RunsOnEspresso you need to run with Skip if someone is eyeing her up she stares them down and says “I see you there” ha ha

Nobody ever worries about me getting attacked by women whilst out on a run. Until I saw the recent posts neither did I 😟5

Trigger warning: no one is safe anywhere.
I think I've typed this out and then deleted it, every time the topic has been brought up here.I was actually assaulted while running (by indecent exposure - fortunately the jerk never touched me). Except I wasn't running when it happened. I was standing at a light, waiting to cross the street, in broad daylight, with people around (just none close enough to see what happened), wearing inconspicuous long running tights and a baggy long-sleeved shirt. He knew what he was doing - saw his opportunity, and timed it perfectly so that he could get away before my shock at what he had just done to me turned into "I need to get his plate #s". It was too late. Average-looking car, average looking middle-aged man whose face I didn't get that good of a look at, and would prefer to forget what I did see anyway. It was a few years ago. I saw a counselor about it and am okay. I'm a bit mad thinking about it now, but really, I was doing everything right. We have no guarantees that our precautions are going to prevent things from happening to us. I run where I want, and take the precautions I feel are appropriate, but if I live in fear, *kittens* like that win. Not this time.9 -
@polskagirl01 Sorry to hear that! I don’t understand people. Which reminded me of what I saw on today’s run. There is a part of the greenway that goes under a bridge which connects to a local park where A lot of people go to run walk bike whatever. It’s usually where I run too as I know a few people now (we wave etc) and there is always someone around. Which makes me feel safer. Anyway, as I was heading down the bridge there was a couple actually in the middle of having sex against the cement wall. They stopped when they saw me running through, and another lady running right behind me. Omg. There are families that go through there all the time, and what did they think no one would come by? I’m still shaking my head at the sight.5
-
@eleanorhawkins Glad you were able to talk to your dad. I know that was a relief. Hope you get good news from the surgeons. Sorry the Screaming Bridge was crowded. I agree. That shouldn't be allowed.
@Scott6255 That run sounds brutal. You did great just getting it done!
@Camaramandy648 AMAZING pace and time on the 172K. I can't even imagine. And congrats on being in 5th place!!! It's good that the other toe nail is growing underneath the bad one. It won't hurt as much when the old one comes off - at least that was my experience when I dropped something heavy on mine and it came off.
You are doing great @WandaVaughn !
2 -
@kristinajeang The trail looks like a nice place to run. Maybe you can try again once the ankle completely heals. You are doing great!
@hamsterwheel6 I'd wait until Sunday and see if at some point during the week I felt like trying to better that time or not. If not, I think your time today for 10K today is great.
@polskagirl01 So sorry that happened to you. People can be such jerks.
@hamsterwheel6 OMGosh! That just makes me shake my head. What were they thinking?!
I played tennis this morning, so taking today as a cross training day.
I decided over the weekend to go ahead and get the surgery done rather than wait. I called the doctor's office this morning and got an appointment for 8 Oct to go in and get it scheduled. Until then, I'll probably just take it easy with the running - short, easy pace. So, not sure I'll make my goal for the month, but that is fine with me. My health is much more important than an arbitrary goal.11 -
@Camaramandy648 The base is 100 miles in October but there was another option (Jero's Journey I think?) that you could pick higher mileage. One was 500. 500.2

Met a friend at 5 pm for 5k, then added a little bit more as warm up right before my strength training session. Strength training was tough today, my kettlebell seemed super heavy - probably that extra gravity that's been going around. My arms are going to be sore tomorrow.
The super nice weather is going to come to an end overnight, sadly. I'm unsure what I'll do about running tomorrow morning before yoga as it looks like rain. I don't really want to be soaking wet and have to change, but I also don't want to run on the treadmill with a mask on. I haven't been on the treadmill since March.

On the topic of running in non daylight hours....
as mentioned in an earlier discussion, I now have good enough hi-vis that if a vehicle hits me, they are either completely terrible at what they are doing, or they meant to it.
As far as concerning individuals, the early morning hours have actually been the least concerning to me. In my experience, the folks unfortunate enough to be up at those hours generally have somewhere to be, and could care less about what you are doing. Combined with the fact that if you are up at that hour, others assume the same level of “you must be hella crazy” that you assume of them, generally means you are left alone. And even MORE SO when I have been doing early morning runs on the “wrong” side of town. Then, they KNOW you are nuts, and leave you alone.
Have a day off and so you run at like 9 or 10 am on a weekday? THAT is when I encounter far more sketchy individuals, with trouble to cause and nowhere to be.
otherwise, not much to share, work is nuts, got done late, days are shorter.... so had all of my mentioned light up gear on. Should have put on long sleeves and gloves, because the world cooled off quickly.
2.1 miles = 16.7? / why am I starting over again.9 -
@hanlosk true, most people I see at like 5 am are also running or walking. I've also found around dusk to have some unsavory characters. The ones that watch a little too long or try to follow.
Mostly I see teenagers trying to hide the weed 🤣3 -
Phew just caught up on 80 odd posts! So busy yesterday I didn’t get a chance to jump on but I did 5 miles before work. That’s three runs in a row, which I don’t normally manage but I’m on track to hit my 100 miles now. Strength training today, so will finish the month tomorrow.
Great running from everyone - wish I could all send you some cake! Re the safety aspect, I always run first thing in the morning so that will mean running in the dark from now until spring. I do sometimes see some people wandering around who look drunk or like they may be on drugs. But mostly it’s other runners or cyclists. I do need to be careful though, and not get too complacent. Sorry you experienced what you did @polskagirl01
@quilteryoyo - well done on making the decision. I’m sure you’ve done the right thing and I have every faith that you will recovery and be back to running in no time at all.
@Teresa502 - amazing hiking pics
@TheMrWobbly - yay for carbs!!!
@skippygirlsmom - that’s great for your daughter to have running support away from home
@scott6255 - Well done; I’ll be with you getting over the line for 100 miles tomorrow...
@Camaramandy648 - amazing as usual. And @eleanorhawkins I completely agree about life priorities. My kids come first, but I know that running and exercise is vital for my emotional as well as physical health.
Hugs and high fives to anyone I’ve missed.
Have a great day everyone x

Re the safety question, I've always been pretty comfortable running on my own in daylight - my theory is I'm fairly fast, have great hearing and the odds are in my favour.
However, I had an eye opening experience when I went out with my two friends on Sunday: At the start of the run, one (a very, very good kickboxer) stopped to use the loo. There was a guy there, who I hadn't even spotted, and she asked us to watch to make sure he didn't follow her in.
This was 7:30am on a wet morning (first day of daylight saving so felt like 6:30am, and my theory falls in line with others regarding early morning attacks - ie, the dodgy peeps are still asleep. The guy himself, while big - tall and very overweight - struck me as a perfectly regular guy. Also, his truck was a company vehicle so he'd be easy to trace. It never occurred to me to consider him a threat.
The same woman later commented that she needed to do some serious solo trail miles (she has a brutal off-road marathon coming up and needs to be mentally and physically prepared) but was afraid to be out alone. The third woman with us concurred. Once again, it never occurred to me to be afraid - the only people you meet on trails in the back of beyond are other runners and hikers.
My husband doesn't like me walking home in the dark after yoga - my reasoning, it's about 500 metres and a busy, well lit street. I refuse to live in fear. That being said, aside from catcalling, and once, a rather drunk young man trying to strike up a conversation with me by running alongside me up a very steep hill (so for about 10 seconds), I've never had a bad experience running. As a result, I happily head out when I please.
I am sensible, and don't do lonely trails in the dark (also, my night vision is *kitten* and I'd probably trip and crack my head open) or run in dodgy neighbourhoods. But I refuse to live in fear of something so unlikely to happen. Clubbing is waaaaay more dangerous.
When running am much, much more afraid of the following (in order): tripping up (has happened more than once), being hit by a car (not yet), stray dogs (never bitten, just barked at), sunburn (happens quicker than you think!).4 -

.All of this! My list is very similar to yours. Dogs are a bit higher, and depending on the location there may be other wildlife added on, but otherwise yes, this is what I worry about while running.2 -
Firstly I think it needs to be recognised that these are OUR trails, roads, and pathways and other people are only allowed on them when we agree to it. I have actually said this a little too often and now my daughter now uses the phrase "my road" when she meets someone in the oppposite direction, Oops!
Secondly @Camaramandy648 wow!!!!!! Just WOW!6 -
@katharmonic Great running. We need to figure out how to get rid of that extra gravity. It's tough when it is in your neighborhood. LOL It weather here is awful today too. Rain and a high of only 58°F. Last year it was 92! Crazy weather. I wouldn't want to have to try to run on a treadmill with a mask either. Don't think that would go well.
