September 2020 Monthly Running Challenge

Okay confession time. I have really struggled for a while with motivation, not just weight loss and running but, for pretty much the first time, generally why be arsed? This makes me normal - everyone has their issues, some are more troubled than others, I am lucky in my environment, my family and my friends. I know many of us are still having this struggle. If you want to PM me and get a few things off your chest I am here. There will be no miracle cures, no "there, there now, it will be alright", some things are tough and we need to be - and we can be and will be - tougher.
P.S. No hugs please - this is a statement of victory!12 -
I did it!! I really did it!! Who knew that the old rolly-polly Wanda of a few years back would be looking at her September miles (she didn't run!) and see 100+ miles covered! WOW!
Ok. Coming down from the clouds.... This morning almost didn't happen because We went to bed an hour later than usual. Then there were a couple of phone calls after that. Deputy Hubby was keeping up with his colleagues -- there was a female subject lost in the woods on our mountain and there was a search party out looking for her. He was getting phone info from civilians and passing it along to the sergeant on duty. The good news is that they found her a little after midnight last night. She was high on meth and didn't even know where she was!
Getting out of bed this morning should have counted as a workout! I need a nap.

I didn't sleep well last night. I was stressed before I went to bed. I was feeling bad about my dad, and also worried about one of my kids. Then I had bad dreams. But I got up ok this morning and the weather was perfect. I ended up having a really lovely 6 mile run. It was actually one of those runs where I felt like I could run forever. But of course I had to get home and get ready for work. I'm hoping today will be a better day and the run was just what I needed to get it started. It should be nice again tomorrow too so I am looking forward to that.
@Teresa502 I love your hiking photos!
@quilteryoyo I'm glad you made your decision and will be praying for you.
@Tramboman Thanks! I think we were a really evenly matched team and I'm really proud of us!
@WandaVaughn Congrats on hitting your goal! I know what you mean too. The me from a few years ago never ran anywhere!

Like many others, my weather changed overnight also. I woke to the sound of rain and it was a chilly 53F and windy. I waited until I caught a break in the rain and headed out. I got about 2 miles in before it started raining again but thankfully, the thunder held off until I was finished.
@camaramandy648 – Amazing mileage lady! Congratulations!
Way to go Pavement Pounders -- @Tramboman and @kgirlhart!
Wahoo @WandaVaughn for making your goal! Stay up there in those clouds as long as you want. I hear the air is so much better! I’m glad the lost person was found safely and hopefully this will be the wake-up call that she needs.
Keep it up @Mari33a! You’ve almost made your PastorVincent challenge mileage!
@polskagirl01 – I’m blaming you for my nightmares about frogs last night!
Insightful conversation about running safely. I’ve been blessed so far to not have any run-ins with any unsavory or questionable characters and I’m sorry for those of you who have had that experience. I think it’s a good reminder when we “talk” about it like this to remember not to let our guards down whether we be male or female.

@kgirlhart We ARE a well matched team!! You're younger, faster, and run farther; I'm old, slow, and don't run very far at all. BUT WE DID IT!!!!5

Finishing off September strong! Did an *easy* two mile run today! I would never have called two miles easy at the start of this month so I was really feeling the progress today! Goal is another 5k tomorrow to finish off September and then Oct 1 as a rest day.

CONGRATS @TRAMBOMAN AND @kgirlhart !!!!! YOU ARE BADASS!
@Faebert @quilteryoyo thank you! @TheMrWobbly Thank you! Also - proud of you! I appreciate that there will be no "there, there, now." I hate that and I hate when people come to me for it. Sunday, my kids' dad was complaining to me that he got a new job (which he really needed) and had to get up early the next day.... then apologized for complaining to me because I had just finished running 31 miles that day. I told him.... it's fine. Running and being nervous about a new job are not the same thing but COME ON! Stop being a baby! Of course, I know, there is a time and place for being compassionate and empathetic. But lord.
@RunsOnEspresso yes! Jero's Journey. That's the one! I probably am not doing 500 miles - but I do plan to see how many times I can complete each loop of the 100. I am not sure how it will go - my right ankle seems to not be super happy with me at the moment.
@quilteryoyo good to know about the toenail. I am just trying to not mess with them. I don't want to go to the dr for it. That seems silly.
No running yesterday and probably not tonight either. First of all, I promised I'd watch tv with my son and play with his dinosaurs with him. We spent SO LONG looking for them last night! Definitely no running tomorrow - it's dinner with Nick and Sophie and family night.
So Thursday, maybe.
I'm also okay with just like maybe sleeping. I think I will feel more normal by tomorrow. That is my hope, anyway.4 -
@kgirlhart Thanks for the prayers. You and your family are in mine as well. Glad you had a nice run to help clear your head this morning.
You are doing great @kristinajeang !

Fantastic @WandaVaughn
Apparently PMs don't always get through if you are not friends so if somebody doesn't get a reply drop me a friend request.0 -
Hi All - meant to post this yesterday but the day got away from me. Too many things going on and by the end of the day the last thing I wanted to do was sit at the computer!
@WandaVaughn - That feeling is absolutely the best! I think you will continue to be amazed at what you can do!
@kgirlhart - I hate when we start worrying about our kids even when they are grown! Sometimes though I just have this terrible feeling and if I haven't heard from her I will text just to make sure everything is ok. I hope the run helped and you had a better day.
Also congratulations to you and @Tramboman for your Pavement Pounders success!!
@Camaramandy648 - hope you get some rest. Sounds like your body could use it after all the work and miles you are putting it through!
I got a run in yesterday. It wasn't great. I feel like after the PM adjustment it is starting all over again but I am confident it will improve over time again. My head phones also died a mile into my run and I just didn't feel like turning back to charge or get different ones. So as a result I listened to the birds, and my huffing and puffing and my feet hitting the ground. It made me hyper aware of every little niggle. I do have a very sore/stiff glute, I guess. It is hard to figure exactly where it hurts. Could be hamstring and maybe groin... just strange and it is worse outside of running so when doing my HIIT class today, lunges and squats were OMG, standing and sitting is tough but foam rolling is helping so I will keep that up.
Agility class was super tough and super fun and Hobbes and I came home exhausted. He was sound asleep and snoring in the car on the way home (only a 15min drive). It is interesting to see how a challenging course can really wipe him out even if it isn't the most physically difficult. I am also realizing that he is getting older and probably can't do too many more 'doubles', running and agility on the same day or back to back runs two days in a row, any longer. ☹️
Yesterday when I was running I got to see one of the ospreys that lives along our river. It was up in a dead tree and while I was taking pictures it started vocalizing. I have never heard one before (or didn't realize that was what I was hearing so I turned on video on my phone. Of course then it stopped so I waited and just before I was going to give up it started again. I was pretty excited!

I didn't see an October Challenge so I started it here
https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10811403/october-2020-monthly-running-challange/p1?new=1
2 -
@shanaber I missed that they adjusted your PM again. I hope it does better this time, once it has had a chance to "learn" your needs. Glad you and Hobbes enjoyed the agility class. How old is he? Love the Osprey. I don't think I have ever heard them vocalize either. Pretty cool.
Thanks for starting the Oct challenge @skippygirlsmom !
I took dad to the VA this morning. They surgically removed a skin cancer from his nose. He has stitches, but not sure how many. I didn't ask and it is bandaged. The doctor did say, when he came back in the room after the removal, "just a couple more stitches and he'll be ready to go." Anyway, he is pretty sure he was able to get it all and it shouldn't grow back. Dad is starting to have a lot of these small cancers pop up. I guess it's all those years of farming and fishing, not worrying about the sun, finally catching up with him. Just has to leave the Band-Aids on a couple of days and we get the stitches out on the 8th. I am so thankful that he has the VA.
I thought about doing a treadmill run when I got home, but it is a rainy, cool day. One of those days that just begs you to lay down on the couch, cover up, watch tv, and take a nap. Who am I to say no to that?4 -
@TheMrWobbly what a nice offer of mutual support. Definitely can relate to the "why bother" feeling every now and then. It seems especially tough right now not really knowing when things are going to potentially get better in general. No hugs, but I hear you.
Great job @WandaVaughn! Always amazing to think of what your "old self" would think of your "new self" and what you've accomplished. Well done.
@kgirlhart hope you had a better day after your good run! And congrats to you and @Tramboman on your run the year goal!
@shanaber sorry about your bad run. Cool pics and video of the osprey though!
@skippygirlsmom thanks for starting October for us - that one snuck up on me.
@quilteryoyo hope your dad is doing well. And hope you enjoyed a rainy day snuggled on the couch. That sounds perfect.

I caught a lucky break this morning and managed a short run with only light sprinkles before yoga. It wasn't much but I avoided the treadmill and didn't get soaked.
Garmin tells me my run was "slow" - do you guys use the Connect app where it now color codes from blue to red for fast to slow on your route? It seems pretty random sometimes when the pace is the same from one run to the next but the color is completely different? I don't understand it's methods and frankly I don't care for it's judgement.

I noticed the colors and looked at them but haven't really paid close attention. I think it may he based off your average pace?
1 -
@katharmonic I do use Gamin Connect and noticed the colors. Didn't really pay close attention to it - just thought it was pretty. LOL1
-
@quilteryoyo - I saw the cardiologist last Monday. Hobbes is a bit over 8 yo. When he runs with me and at agility he seems fine until afterwards. Last night as we were packing up to head home he just leaned against me, when typically he would be trying to visit with everyone.
So glad to hear that the VA is on top of things with your dad and taking care of those little skin cancers!
I am wondering if I can turn the air conditioner up really high and pretend it is cozy fall weather and get under a blanket! It hit at least 99F here today and is expected to be well over 100F tomorrow. The worst part is it isn't cooling down much overnight, so no cool morning running temps.
Thanks @skippygirlsmom for setting us up for October (still can't believe it is October already!)! I thought about it earlier then had to run out to an appointment so you beat me to it!
@katharmonic - I don't have a Garmin but one of the apps that reads my activities from Strava or from my watch, not sure which one it is (maybe the Withings scale?), never thinks I have run. All of my runs are logged as runs and show up that way in Strava and on my watch, so I am guessing it just thinks I am so slow I must be walking 😂
Also I forgot to comment about the personal safety discussion. I feel pretty safe on my trail when I run especially when I have Hobbes with me. He is big enough to look protective and I have had him react a few times to shady characters on the trail. I was also followed by a guy on a bike once in broad daylight and found the nearest people I could and told them there was an issue. The guy turned around and took off. I found out later he assaulted another woman and they caught and arrested him. Now I am mostly afraid of cyclists zooming down the trail and coyotes when we are out on the dirt near the river. Hobbes freaks me out looking behind us there and at the bushes as if there is something there. I also don't like the off leash dogs having been bitten twice.2 -
@katharmonic I laugh at the Garmin color. I ran a 13 and change pace and it said I was fast in the orange and red.
I can’t believe it’s October either. Glad to set it up.3 -
Well, September is done here. I missed my run today as hubby was away from 6am and won't be back until after dinner and it's school holidays so I had small children with me alllllll day. Tried to compensate a little with over three hours in the garden (didn't really come close).
Thanks to taper and recovery, September's mileage is the lowest I've had this year since signing with my coach. October, however, looks like it'll be making up for it!

Today was interval training in the woods. It's been raining for days. A nearby pond is overflowing and turned part of the trail into a stream. I had a weird thing when I was passing the abandoned military base, where I had a strong feeling I needed to go look in one of the buildings. I did, but it was empty and creepy as far in as I went, and after I looked in the first couple rooms it kinda felt like one of those horror movies where something is waiting around the corner and some expendable character stupidly walks right in. So I left. I didn't feel a need to check the rest of the rooms. No idea what was up with that. Maybe there was nothing there and my headache and the rain were messing with my brain. Moving on to some delicious Fall soup
Also - Met the distance goal!
September goal 100K (not miles, due to RACES)

The Garmin heat map shows you your pace, changing from blue to red based on your speed. It is all relative to THAT specific run. So usually mine is blue when starting, then ends red as I finish. I think it is interesting and useful.
@polskagirl01 you are a brave sole for exploring an abandoned military base. Sounds cool though, but I think I would be a little terrified.
6.2 miles for me this morning. It was an absolutely spectacular morning to run...55F, low humidity, light wind. We probably only get a handful of these a year, so I really enjoyed it. Only negative was my earbuds died after mile 1 (phone told me battery was a 60% when I started). But it was a blessing in disguise, because when I took them out I could hear my breathing was quite heavy, so I concentrated on slowing it down and quieting it down (I hate to hear myself breath, hence the earbuds). And it worked! After about another mile I calmed down and barely heard myself breathing. And don't you know it, I was faster on the last 4 miles. It's all about staying relaxed and calm. Let the chanting begin Oooooommmm So I broke past my 100 mile goal for the month.
Thanks @skippygirlsmom for setting up October! See you all there.

Meh, my three month old decided to have a slumber party with me and talk to me from 2am-4am, so I am beat today. Coupled that with the fact that I have meetings scheduled from 11-12 and 1-2 (so a narrower window for a run and lunch), I'm using today as my rest day and will do the 5k tomorrow to kick off October.
21 miles for September and I'm not even upset about it! I'm proud of myself for sticking to it even after getting injured, seeing this month to the end/making the best of it, and can't wait to see what October has in store.11 -

Morning!
Last night was rest day number two. it was actually good timing because THE TEENAGER broke her glasses a month ago, got contacts, insisted on glasses, and the replacements arrived yesterday. The eye dr is open til 7pm so at least I didn't have to miss work to go pick them up with her and get them adjusted. As well, AT LEAST the insurance covers one replacement. God help me. She got in the car this morning to go, no glasses, and then when she ran back in to get them then back to the car, THEY WERE NOT IN THE CASE.
Then she said she wants a whole new wardrobe. That's cute. I'd still like her room to be clean. And for there to be no missing assignments.
After all that, my son DESPERATELY wanted to go look at dinosaurs at the store. I was uneasy because covid, but we wore masks. We were like the only people there. I realized we used to go out all the time. He LOVES just going to look at the toys and tell me, "okay, for Christmas, if you and dad have any money and can work it out...." He hasn't been able to do this in like seven months! Seven months of being stuck at home and so worried about the state of the world. I don't think it's the worst that we have had to stay home. I believe safety is priority. I'm just saddened that his childhood in 2020 has gotten so messed up. Anyway, going out with him to a public place to just let him be a kid and have fun was so nice. When we got home, we sat in the living room and I just watched him play with his dinosaurs. We didn't buy any yesterday because Christmas is coming, but we did manage to absolutely destroy his bedroom looking for every dinosaur he owns.
So today will be rest day #3. Family time and dinner. Cod, carrots, cauliflower. Red bell pepper and pepperoni slices for the teenager and probably some rice. She's very selective of what she is willing to eat. Healthy, at least. The doctor said her bone density is great, lmao.
Anyway. Maybe run tomorrow. Or maybe not. Maybe just let the legs and ankle rest until Saturday. it's been a good week to just let my body do what it does and normalize. Today is the first day I've felt more normal and my digestive system isn't being a total freak.
@polskagirl01 I LOVE THAT! I wish I could have gone with you!8
